Introduction Emergence - Art on the Move is an exhibition that showcases emerging and prof essional artists

whose work deals with the themes of the Black Saturday bushfires and the truth of the recovery

process.

Many artists lived within the fire-aff ected communities and they quickly took on leadership roles,

organising projects, exhibitions and enabling the community to connect. Due to the high calibre of

work produced by many of the emerging and prof essional artists in response to the February 2009

bushfires, the Arts Centre, Federation Square and other partners in the cultural precinct, with

Regional Arts Victoria, have committed to assist the presentation of an event which includes visual

arts exhibitions, writing / poetry, music and performance in Melbourne to commemorate the

second anniversary of Black Saturday.

Kinglake Ranges Visual and Performing Arts Alliance are driving this project with the assistance of

Regional Arts Victorias Arts Recovery Project Officer, Marilyn Gourley. A shared objective is to

include artists and artworks f rom other fire-aff ected communities that examine the range of artistic

responses f rom the fire aff ected regions. The exhibition and associated events are scheduled to

take place f rom the 1st

to 10th February 2011 at Federation Square and the Arts Centre. This

project will coincide with the second anniversary of Black Saturday and is a unique opportunity to

refocus the anniversary in a metropolitan context. This project also promotes the contribution of

the arts to the recovery process so f ar.

The event will have four major components:

Performance

y Performances that may take place at the Arts Centre and/or Federation Square Main StageA curated exhibition

y Featured at the Federation Square Atrium containing writings, poetry, visual arts and sculptural

work

Screen

y A presentation of photography, still and moving images on the Federation big screen

Talks

y Artist talks that f acilitate the collaboration between metropolitan and regional artists and

school students, working with themes of fire.

Objectives

y To mark the second anniversary with a focus on creative recovery processes

y To unite the various bushfire-aff ected communities through art

y To promote the role of the arts and local artists in the recovery process

y To create a space for artists across generations, towns, urban and rural to explore and share

creative responses to disaster and adversity

y To refocus the Bushfire recovery process with local, state and national audience in mind

y To produce a publication/catalogue as a means to represent a range of work

Intended outcomes

y Various bushfire-aff ected artists will connect and collaborate through this event and will, inturn, present the works in their own towns

y This may include opportunities for Year 9 students f rom regional Victoria (some f rom fire-

aff ected areas) to engage with the work f rom this event and engage in dialogue around the

role of arts, resilience and practice

y To provide a focus on positive and creative outcomes following Black Saturday for the people of

Melbourne

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST

Criteria for selection

The project will be directed by a curatorial committee made up of artists, project partners and

representatives of the involved venues. In order to maintain a high standard of quality the

curatorial committee will ensure that the following criteria are met in the selection process.

Works must:

y Be f rom a prof essional, emerging or first time artist f rom the 2009 bushfire-aff ected

communities

y Ref lect the truth of the recovery process f rom the artists perspective

y Collectively represent a range of recovery themes and responses over time

y Represent diversity of art form

y Be easily transportable and delivered to designated local pick up venues 4 days before

exhibition on Thursday 28th

January 2011

y Be ready to exhibit by 1st

February 2011

This event encourages participation f rom a diverse range of artists and groups. Despite this, it will

not be an open access exhibition but will be carefully managed according to the curatorial overlay

established by the participating venues.

The curatorial committee reserves the right to limit the number of works.

Not all works submitted will be selected. However, this does not ref lect on the artists

prof essionalism or practice but how the work fits alongside other stories and works submitted.

This event intends to pay respect to the events of Black Saturday.

There will be a gathering at Federation Square on the 7th

February. Please indicate in your artists

statement if you would be interested in attending or participating.

project and the artist agrees to KRVPAA using these artworks and any media created relating to the finished

made in the public realm in a publishable form.
