Why did we develop Emerald Backfiles?

• Changes in reader behaviour – content is chiefly accessed online rather than via hard copy journals

• Four of the five most cited papers in Emerald journals were published before 1994 (when we first started to capture content electronically)

• Digitizing the archive has brought this knowledge to new readers and reopened historical scholarship.

How did we do it?

• With great help from the British Library!• We worked with our author network to source articles• Over 68,000 articles were digitized, dating as far back as 1898 • Each of the articles was transformed into fully searchable PDFs• All articles were up-loaded into our Emerald platform and made

searchable in the same way as Emerald Management eJournals

Over 100 years of management research online … • Coverage back to Volume 1 Issue 1 with some articles dating back

as far as 1898• 123 journal titles complete the Emerald Digital Backfiles, providing
