2. Safety Features

The instructor station and surrounding areas are provided with the following safetyequipment and systems.

2.1 Emergency Cutoff SwitchesThe Emergency Off buttons on the IOS Control Panel shut down the motion andcontrol loading systems in the event of an emergency.

Refer to section 3 for further information.

2.2 Crew AccessWhen the simulator flight compartment comes to the rest position, the accesswayautomatically swings into position against the exit platform at the rear of the flightcompartment.

2.2.1 Emergency Operation of Accessway

In the event of an emergency condition, the accessway has been designed to ensurethat the simulator can be evacuated regardless of mechanical or electrical failures.Emergency power to the crew accessway is provided by a battery pack. In the eventof a complete power failure, the flight compartment returns to the rest position andthe accessway automatically lowers. If the battery pack or actuator fails, theaccessway can be operated as follows:

(1) Remove the quick release pin on the base of the motor actuator and allow theactuator to swing into a vertical position (the stored energy within the springloaded counterweight will support the weight of the drawbridge when therelease pin is removed).

(2) Manually lower the drawbridge by applying pressure against the drawbridgehandrails. Moderate pressure is all that is required to overcome the resistanceof the counterweight and move the drawbridge to the lowered position.

NOTE: All six motion jacks must be in the rest position (confirmed bya magnetic switch on top of the individual motion jacks)before the crew accessway can be lowered.

2.2.2 Emergency Escape Ladder

If the accessway does not function properly, a rope or metal telescopic escape ladder is provided for exiting the simulator. The rope escape ladder is located under the floor, while the telescopic ladder is mounted at the rear of the simulator.

To use the rope escape ladder, open the access door and unroll the escape ladder over the middle railing rung or lower panel on the back of the flight compartment.

To deploy the telescopic ladder proceed with the following steps:

(1) Pull out the safety release pins from the top of the railing.

(2) Lift and rotate the retainer brackets to unlock the railing.

(3) Push to open the security railing.

(4) Slightly turn the release lever to unlock and pull upwards to deploy the escapeladder.

NOTE: If there is no immediate danger, wait for the maintenance crew to provide a solid ladder.

2.3 Smoke Detection System A Very Early Smoke Detection Apparatus (VESDA®) system detects the early indications of combustion within the protected zones. It uses a series of sampling collection tubes running from the cabinets and the flight compartment to the detector unit. Any smoke above a specified limit results in the sounding of the P1 cabinet warning horn. A total power shutdown (with the exception of the P1 cabinet) will be executed. The VESDA® smoke detector is equipped with a battery backup system.

NOTE: Smoke detection in the flight compartment is disabled by the fire protection panel (if equipped) when the smoke generator (if equipped) is activated.

2.4 Emergency Lighting In case either a mains power failure or an emergency power off situation occurs, emergency lighting is provided by battery backup to selected areas in the flight compartment. For more information, refer to the Safety Maintenance Manual (115-9).

2.5 Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) In case of a mains power failure the UPS will provide enough power so that the operator can power down the computers in an orderly fashion. For more information, refer to the Electrical Power Maintenance Manual (115-1).

3. Instructor Station Configuration

The instructor station (see Figure 3-1) is designed to assist the instructor inmonitoring all aspects of crew performance in the simulator. The instructor stationutilizes the dark concept, where a control is illuminated only when its function isavailable. The instructor benefits from the dark concept since there are fewer controlsto read when searching for a particular function.

The instructor station includes two mounted LCD touch screens that display the IOSpages (refer to section 5 for further information on IOS pages) and an IOS Controlpanel that provides access to emergency shutdown buttons, motion and controlloading switches, lighting controls, a digital clock, a temperature control panel andmiscellaneous switches to control and monitor various aircraft systems. A third LCDscreen is located above the control panel (not shown).

The instructor station also contains an LCD and keyboard normally used formaintenance purposes, an overhead bookshelf, and an observer headset panel withvolume control and headset jack that allows the observer to monitor radiocommunications of the crew.

The instructor and observer seats are equipped with armrests and a lap belt. The seatsare mounted on tracks to allow forward and backward movement, and are capable ofheight adjustment and rotation.

IOS pages are lists of information grouped logically by function or system, each uniquely identified by a number. Each IOS page is a collection of items. Typically, an item is composed of a comment field and a volatile field. The comment field describes the parameter or function and does not change (although it may change color), and the volatile field displays the parameter value or state and follows changes in the value or state.

In addition to displaying information, the instructor can change information on an IOS page. Items whose state or value the instructor can change have a box or touch area around them. Items are selected by touching the area within the box.

5.1 IOS Page Input/Output Types Variables on an IOS page are displayed using different formats depending on the type of the variable. The types of variables that may be found on an IOS page are described as follows:

(1) DECIMAL: A decimal type function displays and accepts input in a decimalformat. This includes the latitude/longitude, angle, time, and alphanumericformats.

(2) SET VALUE: A set value type function sets a predetermined value for up to 60decimal or Boolean type variables when selected. A set value may also be pre-programmed to activate when certain criteria are met.

(3) MULTIPLE: A multiple type function is a single display which may display upto 10 decimal functions.

(4) BAR CHART/BAR SCROLL: Decimal values also may be displayed andaccept input in the form of a bar chart/bar scroll graphic representation.

(5) POPUP MENU: A popup menu function displays a window that containsadditional controls relating to the selection made.

TOTAL Displays status and selection activates/deactivates total FREEZE freeze. When total freeze is active, the following

occurs:

• All flight parameters (i.e., pitch, bank, heading, airspeed) freeze.

• Altitude and position freeze.• Flight controls freeze irrespective of whether the

autopilot is on or off (control loading is not frozen).• Motion freezes except for washout as predicted by

the flight conditions at the moment of freeze.• All aircraft systems freeze. Crew selections are no

longer reflected in changing indications exceptwhere a selector directly drives an indicator (e.g.,frequency selectors). The communication systemcontinues to function.

• Sound level decreases to zero.

Releasing of total freeze does not cause violent control or motion movements, irrespective of whether the autopilot is on or off and independent of the control positions at the moment of freeze release.

HELP Displays status and selection activates/deactivates help mode. Selecting an item on the page while help mode is active displays a popup containing a description of the selected item. If no selection is made within 2-3 seconds after help mode is activated, a popup describing the functionality of the current page appears.
