Emanuel’s Word March 2019
March comes in like a lion, and goes out like a lamb. ~Proverb
“Aslan is a lion- the Lion, the great Lion." "Ooh" said Susan. "I'd thought he was a man. Is he--quite safe? I shall feel rather nervous about meeting a lion"..."Safe?" said Mr. Beaver … "Who said anything about safe? 'Course he isn't safe. But he's good.” ~ C.S. Lewis, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Lamb of God, have mercy on us. ~ Liturgy
Surprised that my calendar was so near to March, I found myself reminded of the proverb often associated with the month. As I reflected, I was struck by how both animals immediately pointed my thoughts toward God. In the Chronicles of Narnia, C.S. Lewis imagined Christ as the Lion Aslan, and does a masterful job capturing the heart of Jesus. Lamb of God, in a number of beautiful melo-dies, is sung each Sunday before communion. And one of my most favorite images of faith is the lion lying down with the lamb, regularly seen during the seasons of Advent and Christmas. This im-age leans on Isaiah 11:6, which does refer to the lion and lamb both lying down… just not together. This prompted me to think about how I have experienced God in Christ in my life. I have known God as a lion… roaring, protecting; allowing me to feel safe in times of difficulty or fear. I have experienced God as a lamb… comforting, joyful… in times of sadness or celebrating new beginnings.
The season of Lent begins in March this year… how is the season itself in like a lion and out like a lamb… or maybe just the opposite? Before Lent begins we will be having a ‘roaring’ good time at the ecumenical Jazz Sunday service on March 3rd; we worship with our brothers and sisters in faith at Christ Episcopal. (Same bat time, different bat channel.) Ecumenical Shrove Tuesday pancakes will happen at Emanuel the following Tuesday, March 5th from 4:30-7p. Ash Wednesday service brings us fully into the season the following night, March 6th at 7 pm.
How have you experienced God in Christ in your life? Have there been time when you have experienced God as a lion? As a lamb? As some of both? Maybe you have experienced God in a different way altogether… know I’d love to hear what you’re thinking. Maybe over coffee? Peace,
Pastor Jennifer

Council Vice President’s Report
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
We bid a fond a’dieu to February’s ice and snow
and below freezing temperatures. We so very
much welcome the first signs of spring! My daf-
fodils and tulips are up an inch – and holding. We
also look back with gratitude for some February
happenings. Our church furnace kept us warm
through a very cold month! WELCA had another
successful Winter Rummage and Soup Sale,
thanks to many dedicated hearts and hands. The
Sisters in Heart Tea was lovely! Thank you Mary
Ellen and Julie. Council members worked on both
a Child Protection Policy, and a Prevention of
Sexual Harassment Policy. Thank you for your
dedication and diligence.
We look forward to many opportunities in March!
Jazz Sunday will be at Christ Episcopal Church on
March 3. Men in Mission will provide an ecu-
menical Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner 4:30-
7:00 on March 5. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday,
March 6, with an ecumenical Service here at ELC
at 7:00 pm. Daylight Savings Time begins on
March 10. The Installation of Council members is
scheduled for Sunday, March 17. And, Emanuel
will host the Lenten dinners this year catered by
Fran’s Landing. The dinners happen on five suc-
cessive Thursdays in Lent beginning March 14,
food at 6:00, program at 6:30, ending by 8:00.
(And, I pray that my spring bulbs are brave
enough to grow another inch this month!) Thanks
be to God for the hope and joy of this early spring
season! God is Great! All the Time!
Peace,
Carol Witt

Despite the very cold weather, our Winterfest Sale was very successful bringing in more than
$2,500 to be divided between The Corning Community Food Pantry and Emanuel’s Kitchen
Fund. IT WAS SOUP WEATHER and we made and sold over 300 quarts of soup. Many,
many thanks to all those who helped in any way – contributing items, giving time, stirring
soup, pricing, etc., etc.
At present, there is a Blanket Making Project going on. Please come and help us on the desig-
nated days. No need to sew – it’s just cutting fleece and knotting…
The Little Dresses project is continuing as is the Prayer Shawl project. Stay tuned for the date
of our next Community Sew. With all the cold weather, it seems like a good time to Sew or
Knit…
Our next meeting will be Thursday afternoon, March 7, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. – Come join us.
WELCA NEWS
BOOK CLUB……. will return.

18 Things Everyone Should Start Making Time For Again By Brianna Wiest
Brianna Wiest is a professional list-maker, unwarranted advice giver and admirer
of all things beautiful, natural and ...
1. Writing things by hand. Letters to friends, lists for the store, goals for the week,
notes for lovers, thank you cards and memos to coworkers. Digital communication
is easy and convenient but ask anybody: there’s a huge difference between texting
someone to say that you love them and hope they have a great day and
writing it on a note and leaving it next to their bed.
2. Savoring time to do nothing. Taking a cue from pre-industrialized society and
cultures that enjoy siestas and long, drawn-out, sit-down teas that serve no other
purpose than to spend time enjoying the time you have.
3. Thinking before responding. We’ve become too conditioned to require things
immediately. Someone asks a question, and we have to respond that second. Such
was not the case before instant messaging and comment threads. A sign of true
intelligence and confidence, I think, is someone who takes time to consider the
question at hand in a little more depth, and then offers a response.

Bible Study
There will be no Bible Study in March. Our next
meeting is Tuesday, April 16th. We will have a guest
speaker who will talk to us about Islam, how it start-
ed and how it’s so much like Christianity. We return
to our regular study format in May.
A Time for Quiet Meditation
When we read the bulletin each Sunday, we notice that just before the greeting there’s a time of meditation while the organist plays the Prelude. That means we should end our conversations and quietly prepare ourselves for worship. We can resume our chats after worship.
Carpet in the narthex: Some of you may have noticed the carpet
is starting to ripple in certain places. This presents a potential
trip hazard. Our insurance representative was recently in and
did a visual inspection and called this out. We now have 45 days
to respond. I have contacted Cutler’s Carpet and they will come
and stretch the carpet. We will be looking for volunteers with
strong arms and good backs to help move the pews. All of the
pews will need to be taken up and set either near the alter, in the
foyer or over in the hall while the work is being done and then of
course moved back. Hopefully our young graduates will be
available. As soon as we have a date I will ask Mike to send out
a separate email as well as put it in the bulletin. Yours in faith,
Carrie Smith (Pres.)

February 2019 Council Report Minutes
We discussed the April 7th Sunday service and whether it would be youth lead. Pastor had somebody scheduled but it has traditionally been youth Sunday. Caren to talk with the youth about April 7th being the date for this year’s youth lead service.
We discussed setting a date to install new council members. We decided to
set a date of 3/17 for installation of officers’. We discussed the death of Betty
Spitzer and Father Troy covered the funeral in Elkland for the funeral. Reflecting on
Scout Sunday Pastor told us her experience with her husband and his involvement
with scouting.
We will be getting a revised Treasurers report from Phyllis. January is still un-
der the 2018 budget for net vs gross and updates needed to be completed for 2019.
Past snow removal for 2018 was paid in 2019. Jim moved to accept and Carol se-
conded for approval.
Jim gave an update on the thermostat for the education building. We dis-cussed having a smart thermostat that can be controlled from multiple phones. This spending amount would not require congressional approval.
We discussed the Child Protection Policy e-mail sent by John and Sue. Our in-surance policy did go up to $937 and coverage down for liability concerning child protection. We are going to work toward a child protection policy for 2019. A written policy to Prevent Sexual Harassment in the work place was dis-cussed. Jim updated the template from NY state and recommended few changes to make future versions easier to maintain. We will have further discussion next month. Pastor was going to ask Dean Laura if they have a cover sheet with signatures.
In calendar planning, we added stewardship Sunday on November 17th. Pastor added the installation of offices for 3/17/19 and the pancake supper for 3/5/19 with help to begin showing up at 3:00 PM.
Our next Council Meeting will be held on Thursday, March 20th at 6 PM

18 Things….Continued from page 4…….
4. Cooking a nice meal just for the sake of doing so. It really trains you to defy your need for
instant gratification and of course puts you in touch with something that’s very human and
can be lovely if done right.
5. Getting really dressed up for no other reason than just wanting to.
6. Books. Actual hard copy books that you can scribble notes in and mark off sections of and
smell ink through and hear the sound of turning pages and bending spines while you read.
7. Making phone calls to relatives for no other reason than to just say hi, and to ask how
they’re doing.
8. Disconnecting from technology frequently enough that we won’t be anxious and feeling
like we’re missing something when we try to do so for an extended period of time.
9. Celebrating things with long, multiple course dinners that we hold for people as opposed to
just drinking ourselves into an oblivion and being belligerent (that has it’s time and place, of
course, but having thoughtful, celebratory dinners is a dying art).
Check out “The Truth About Everything”
10. Cleaning because it’s satisfying and doing things like painting walls or getting fresh flow-
ers just because it’s therapeutic.
11. Spending time with kids, and doing kid things with them. They just know what’s up.
12. Answering things in a timely fashion, not putting off invitations and requests just because
we can.
13. Making sure relationships are actually based on time spent with one another. People seem
to be sustaining them through only digital means with increasing frequency and I can under-
stand how that’s important if it’s temporarily long distance but in general, physically being
with people is the only thing that will give you that sense of human connectedness.
14. Just sitting and listening to music. We’ve made music background noise in our everyday
lives, but now and again we should just sit and enjoy it like people used to.
15. Traveling by train, or if that’s not possible, at least exploring places that you pass every-
day. Especially if you live in a big city, there are always little hidden gems around that you
won’t believe you lived without seeing while they were a block away from you all along.
16. Putting personal health and well-being first, as it often falls to the wayside in importance.
This means, aside from the obvious, taking those personal days and using them to just relax.
We’ve made such a quirky commodity out of enjoying napping and relaxing, as though doing
so makes us boring and old. It doesn’t, it’s healthy.
17. Planning something, especially with someone else, as simple as dinner or as grandiose as
a long vacation next year. You always need something to look forward to.
18. Stopping to talk to people throughout the day. Connecting with them genuinely, as such
interaction is really important but is becoming increasingly less common. Turning our phones
off when out to dinner (who even turns them off anymore?) and learning to not spend all of
our time documenting whatever we’re doing for social media. It often takes away from the
experience itself.
