Pastor’s Article:

Some of you have heard me tell this story. It took place a couple of weeks before Easter this year. Our group of volunteers from Emanuel’s and I were conducting one of

the monthly Communion services at a local nursing home. In my message I was talking about Easter morning, and how the women went to the tomb at dawn to anoint what they thought would be Jesus’ dead body. “But what,” I asked the group, “did the women find

when they got to the tomb?” And one little old lady yelled out in her thick Louisiana accent: “The body twern’t there! It twern’t there!”

“It twern’t there!” That lady was right. The body “twern’t there because Christ is

risen! He is risen, indeed. Alleluia! (I will probably tell this “twern’t there!” story in every

Easter sermon from now on!).

May our ongoing life in the resurrection bring us life, new vision and hope in the midst of all things.

Now, speaking of new life, vision and hope, I hope all take strong note of “Emanuel’s 2020 – Envisioning the Future.” This is the title of our visioning and planning

process that we as a congregation are embarking on for these next six months or so. You’ve hopefully seen the news items on Emanuel’s 2020 in the weekly bulletin, through church mailings, and elsewhere in this newsletter.

A key point I’d like to emphasize is that Emanuel’s 2020 is for each and every

member of the congregation. As we are all gifted by God’s Spirit through our baptism into Christ, let us all join together as we discover God’s vision for our congregation through Emanuel’s 2020.

In resurrection hope,

Pastor Paul Cannon

Interim Pastor

Congregational Potluck Come join us Sunday May 22nd for a congregational potluck right after

church. Bring a dish to share that can feed 8 or more. Let’s have a good time together and celebrate the end of the school year with the children.

Pastor’s New Member/Refresher Class. “What Lutherans Believe” is a class Pastor

Cannon will be offering during Sunday School on five consecutive Sundays, May 8th through June 5th. New members will then be received on June 5th. This class is intended for adults 18

and over who were not confirmed in the Lutheran church and who now seek to join the Lutheran church. It is also a good refresher class for all. To get in on the class, contact Pastor Cannon after church, via email at [email protected], or by phoning

the church office at 379-5046. (Location of the class will be announced before the first session and will depend on the number of persons who register).

Emanuel’s Lutheran Church gave over $2,800 to ELCA World Hunger to buy

medicines for overseas health clinics. Persons attending our Lenten services in February and March gave over $2,800 in offerings which are being given through the ELCA World

Hunger program. All of these offerings are given at the annual Synod Assembly for the Southwestern Texas Synod Sunday worship service and will go to support medical health clinics overseas through the ELCA world hunger program. It costs $75 per week to provide

medicines to a clinic, meaning that Emanuel’s members provided 33 weeks for a clinic!

102 different ministry activities at Emanuel’s Lutheran: as the staff was collecting the names of the various congregational ministries and activities for use in our Emanuel’s 2020 meeting, we counted 102 ministry activities (and we know we missed some)!

Council News – from Marsha Schroeder, Council Secretary

This information is provided based on the unapproved minutes from the meeting on March 23. Once the minutes are approved we plan to post them in strategic spots. This synopsis is just to give you a snapshot of what is happening.

It has already been announced to the Congregation the Dennis Sagebiel is temporarily stepping aside as Council President due to continuing health issues. He and his family are in our prayers. Karen Weinstein will serve as Acting President, and Steve Tschoepe will be Acting Vice President in the interim.

The Synod Assembly is being held April 29 – May 2 in San Marcos and Emanuel’s will be represented by Karen Weinstein, Susan Yeatts, and Levi Stalsworth.

Those couples who have been married for 50 years or longer will be celebrated on June 26 – save the date and watch the newsletter and bulletin for more information.

Provisions have been made in the budget for Alex Norden to be able to work full time in the summer to accompany your children to camp and coordinate VBS.

The Wedding Policy has been amended to allow for an officiant other than the pastor of Emanuel’s with approval. We discussed the benevolence allocations for 2016, and along those same lines, we are proud to say that we are able to make an offering of $2900 at the Synod Assembly from the Lenten Offerings this year.

You may be seeing some new faces in the office as we transition some of Bonnie’s duties, freeing her up to resume working on the newsletter and bulletin. This, in turn lets Tom do visitation and more of the nursing home services.

Ladies Aid Report

by Judy Stollewerk

Nineteen members and Pastor Cannon were present at the April 6 meeting of the

Ladies Aid. The members made 50 visits to homebound and shut-ins.

Vice President, Beulah Reiley opened the meeting with a prayer. After a hymn,

Pastor Cannon gave a Bible study based on Philippians 4:4-7. His message reminded us to

have an attitude of gratitude and give thanks in all things.

Beulah Reiley read the names of the April birthday ladies and anniversary couples.

The hymn I Know That My Redeemer Lives was sung to honor them.

Secretary Judy Stollewerk read the minutes of the March meeting and read

correspondence. Treasurer Judy Campbell gave her report. Standing Committee reports

were then made.

Items of business: Ladies Aid will sponsor a bingo party at Nesbit Living &

Recovery Center on April 12 at 2 pm. The ladies voted to contribute $100 toward the

Emanuel's youth & family event at You're So Crafty on April 8. A request to replace

the microwave at the Day School was approved. A donation in the amount of $600 to the

Christian Cupboard was approved. The beautiful podium in the Women's Ministry Room

funded through memorials now has a plaque recognizing the names of God's servants.

Karen Weinstein reminded the ladies of the Strategic Planning Meeting on April

24. The Vice President announced that May 4 will be a Mother's Day Recognition

Meeting. Each member was encouraged to bring to the meeting a special item to display

that belonged to her mother or grandmother or special lady in her life. There being no

further business, the meeting adjourned with the Lord's Prayer and the singing of God Be with You.

Emanuel’s Lutheran Grief and Loss Support Ministry

Grief is the normal reaction to the loss of a loved one or to a major change in one’s lifestyle. Grief is natural and necessary as we continue to learn to adapt with the changes in our life; it is a process of adjustment, reconciliation, and healing. There is no one way to grieve or a particular time frame in which we accomplish this task. But we can benefit when we come together to share our experiences.

Emanuel’s Lutheran Grief and Loss Support Ministry is available to anyone who has lost a loved one to death or who has gone through a major change in their lifestyle. We want to provide emotional and/or spiritual support for anyone who needs our help.

Please contact Donna Simmons, the Grief and Loss Support Coordinator at 830-379-5046 for more information.

VOLUME 15 NO. 5 MAY 2016 P.7

Day School News

May, 2016

May and December are perhaps the two busiest months here at the Day School….well….there’s

September….and October…oops, forgot about Easter and Thanksgiving! Well May is very busy!

On Friday, May 6, Ms. Valdez’s and Ms. Janz’s classes will offer a Mother’s Day program for their

Moms to celebrate their mothers and showcase what the children have learned throughout the year.

There will be a brief program for each class beginning at 9:30 and 10:00 followed by a reception in each

classroom. Everyone is invited to attend for the programs and receptions – the children do a beautiful

job and you are welcome to join us.

On Wednesday, May 25th

, Ms. Janz’s Pre-K4 class will graduate at 7pm in the Fellowship Hall. A

reception follows and we would love to have members of our congregation join us for this joyous, often

humorous, occasion also.

Registration is currently open for the Seguin community and surrounding areas for enrollment in the

toddler through Pre-K4 classes for the summer and 2016-2017 school year. We want to begin our year

with waiting lists in all three classes. Our fall semester begins on Monday, August 22nd

, to coincide with

the calendar for Seguin ISD. Please help us spread the word about the faith-based, educational and

nurturing, safe environment offered here at your Day School ministry.

We continue to have several inquiries each week regarding enrollment for children under the age of

eighteen months – infants. There remains a great need for quality infant care in Seguin for mothers who

must return to work when their child is as young as six weeks old. We hope to be able to accommodate

those families in our community by expanding and upgrading our facility in the very near future. This is

a critical outreach ministry not only in Guadalupe County, but throughout the State of Texas. Please

speak up to the Transitional Team, which is currently in the process of assessing our future goals and

mission, and express your support for the expansion and improvement of this ministry which has been in

existence since 1949.

Improvements and upgrades to the interior of the building are planned for late spring and summer

including paint, carpet and additional cabinetry for the classrooms. We owe a very special thank you to

the Property Stewards for their help at the Day School, in particular, Joe Kane, who has spent his

Sunday afternoons and several other days replacing lighting fixtures so that we are light and bright again.

Thank you, also, to our ever-present Ladies Aid, for providing the Pre-K4 classroom with a microwave

when ours retired itself last month. We have also been blessed with donations from our members of the

Thrivent Choice program. What would we do without our loyal cadre of supporters and volunteers?

May the Peace of the Lord be with you All,

Deb Haug, Director

Emanuel’s Women of the ELCA (WELCA) By Jeanne Palmer, President

We would like to invite all the women of the Church to come join us in our monthly Bible study. If you are working, we have Faith Circle in the evenings. Joy Circle meets in the mornings for those that need an earlier time to meet.

May 4 – Ladies Aid 2:00 pm Women’s Ministry Room, Officers are Hostesses May 12 – Joy Circle 9:30 am Women’s Ministry Room, Annabelle Koehler, hostess May 17 – Faith Circle meets 7:00 pm Women’s Ministry, Room Cindy Pique, hostess; Beulah Reiley, Bible Study Leader

The Quilter’s for Lutheran World Relief meet every Monday 9:00 – 12:00. This is a very rewarding ministry. You don’t have to sew. All are welcome to join this ministry.

WELCA represents all the women of the church. We gather in fellowship twice a year. We send representatives to church conferences. Our projects are all the projects of the Circles, Altar Guild, Ladies Aide, Mission Action, Mission Community and Quilters of Lutheran World Relief. We invite all women to come join one or more of our organizations. We have great fellowship and service to others. Come join the fun.

VOLUME 15 NO. 5 MAY 2016 P.8

HELP US, PLEASE! Our Emanuel’s Lutheran World Relief Quick Quilters have made lots and lots of blankets of

donated fabrics: sheets, curtains, bedspreads, mattress pads, blankets, and any fabric that you just don’t want anymore. Every blanket is three layers, sized 60” x 80”, and the dimensions of a queen-size mattress. That’s 14,000 square inches of fabric!

We are always pleased to discover that any kind of fabric has been left for us here at church. Stained fabrics are hidden as middle layers. Right now we are especially in need of old blankets, mattress pads, or fleece that would provide the warm layer to the blanket. Fabrics can be left in the church office or taken to our workrooms at the south end of the third floor.

The Day School is in need of gently worn clothing such as shorts, long pants, long- and short- sleeved t-shirts,

hoodies, jackets, socks and shoes for children 18 months to 4 years old. There are times when the children get

dirty in the garden or experience the inevitable accident in potty training and need a change of clothing. We

are not asking for new clothing (with the exception of underwear); all clothing will be labeled “Emanuel’s Day

School” and parents will wash and return this clothing for use another day. If your children or grandchildren

have outgrown some of these items and you would like to donate them, we would appreciate it so that we make

begin to build a storage shelf of “emergency clothing”. For further information, see or call Deb at 372-0332 or

drop off the clothing at the Day School. Thank you!

However, we are in danger of closing the Garden if we are not able to gain volunteers who can assist with weeding, watering and planting on a limited number of hours during the day, evenings or weekends throughout the year. Ms. Janz’s class at the Day School and Ann Theiss do their best every Tuesday and Thursday to keep it running, but with spring upon us, and summer around the corner, we need assistance planting, weeding and watering….it’s getting away from us. Won’t you please consider joining this important ministry? See Mike or Deb Haug or call one of us at (830)832-1944 or the Day School office at 372-0332. Thank you so much for your support!
