Principal’s Reflections
Classes for 2017 At this point in time it is expected we will have 22 classes with approximately 560 students (a rise of one class from 2016). As a result, it is expected that all classes will be single grade. Of note, we will have four single grade Kindergarten classes
Android Phones, Mobile Phones and iPhones etc School Protocol Whilst we discourage the bringing of mobile phones to our school, we understand that in some cases this may provide a sense of safety and security for students (and parents) while travelling to and from school. However, we need to remind parents that all children bringing phones to school must check them in with the office at the beginning of each school day. They will be returned of an afternoon. Phones will be kept in a locked space / drawer in the office for security.
Please ensure their name is cello taped to the back of the phone for ease of return. Students and parents are reminded that students bring mobile phones to school at their
own risk. Inappropriate use of a mobile device falls under the School Discipline Policy, and
the Wellbeing Code. The use of mobile devices at school or on school sanctioned excursions to film / video /
text / call / photograph / record etc, without the prior knowledge and permission of the teacher is not permitted.
Let’s keep them all safe!
Lock Down Drill Last Tuesday 15th of November, the school held a successful Lockdown Drill which involved everyone on our school site. This is part of our regular Work Health and Safety (WHS) policy and procedures. Emergency Evacuation drills are also held as part of WHS at our school. https://www.det.nsw.edu.au/policies/staff/WorkHealthSafety/PD20130454.shtml
Newcastle Inner City Bypass Update The below information was sent to the school this week and and maybe of interest to many of you. I have included the hyperlink to the site for ease of reference.
Subject: Newcastle Inner City Bypass, Rankin Park to Jesmond – Environmental impact
statement display Roads and Maritime Services has developed an environmental impact statement (EIS)
which outlines the key features of the project and assesses its potential environmental,
social and economic impact during construction and operation. We have also prepared an EIS overview booklet which summarises the assessment of key
issues, design features, project benefits and how to make a submission during the EIS
display. The booklet is available to view on our project webpage. The Department of Planning and Environment has placed the EIS on display for comment.
For detailed information, please refer to the EIS in full which is available to view
electronically or in hard copy locally at: Roads and Maritime regional office in Newcastle
Department of Planning and Environment in Newcastle
Newcastle City Council
Newcastle City Library, New Lambton Library, Wallsend District Library and Lambton
Library. All submissions must be received by the Department of Planning and Environment by Friday
16 December 2016. Stakeholders and the community are also invited to attend drop-in information sessions at
Silver Ridge Community Cottage, 13 Iranda Grove, Wallsend on: Saturday 26 November between 9am and 2pm Thursday 1 December between 3pm and 6pm. To learn more about the project, to view the EIS overview booklet or view a 3D visualisation

Police Cyber Safety Talk Held Last Thursday, our Yr 4 to Yr 6 students had a Cyber Safety talk given by NSW police. The key message is that parents must be diligent, take control and be responsible for their children’s access and usage when on-line or using digital communication technologies. With holidays approaching and Santa bringing many digital devices to the “good girls and boys”, this message is well worth considering.
We will be arranging a parent Cyber Safety talk in the near future with NSW Police.
Cyber Safety (Reminder) In an increasingly digital age, as parents, we cannot be too vigilant in keeping our children safe from the “dark side” of the web and other digital communication devices.
The below hyperlink is directed to Life Education (Empowering our children and young people to make safer and healthier choices through education).
http://www.lifeeducation.org.au/parents/cyber-safety?gclid=CK3sg8bJrtACFYKXvAod4zYHdQ Please consider.
Handball Rules (Reminder) We have had a number of issues with handball recently and children not playing by the rules agreed upon and developed with them through the SRC. For parent information the rules are written below. A family discussion about these rules may come in handy.
The rules are: Handball is played with one flat hand
One bounce - your square / their square
No chances
No fulls – must bounce in your square first
No pick upas
No ganging up
No minding spots / squares
No poison / practice
No play on.
Outstanding Term 4 Money Now Due (Reminder) An invoice will be coming home this week for any outstanding money due to the school. The breakdown of costs is shown on the invoice with many relating to: Reading Eggs (approx.$5)

Other. These costs are for the provision of additional resources for the children and are not school fees.

POSITION VACANT - Our P&C is looking for a new Auditor
We would like to thank our current Auditor, a dad at our school, for his time and effort in completing our P &C Associations audit for the last two financial years. As his children are currently in Year 6 and will be leaving for High School at the end of the year, we are now seeking the services of a new Auditor to review our records and financial statements for the financial year ending 30 June 2017. When - Although we do not require any services to be rendered until late in 2017 we need to appoint the new Auditor at our AGM on 7 December 2016. We are therefore seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified parents, grandparents or friends of our school interested in filling this open position. Remuneration - Historically the position of auditor is an unpaid position and we are hoping that this will continue so that our fundraising is not spent on administration and can be donated to Wallsend South Public School for purchase of resources. Qualifications - The auditor does not need to be a qualified professional. The auditor must possess appropriate skills and experience in auditing and financial record management together with an appreciation of the issues of probity as they relate to the role of association auditor. The auditor must not have or appear to have any conflict of interest arising, for example, from a personal or business relationship with an Officer of the Association and must be prepared to swear that the records are a true and correct statement of the information provided by the Treasurer.
If you are interested in assisting our P&C Association fill this position or would like further
information on the scope of the engagement, please do not hesitate to contact our P&C
Treasurer - Tracey Mahoney at [email protected] or phone 0430 789 28
Celebration Night
It is not long until Celebration Night December 7. Just some reminders that may be useful:
Location : The West City - cnr of King and Union Street Newcastle West. (This is the only venue large enough for our school)
When: December 7 Rehearsal : A final rehearsal for students only, will take place at Wests City Newcastle on Wednesday 7th December during the school day. Permission notes for this event are included with this week’s Tallong. There is no cost for the bus as this cost was built into the fees paid earlier this term. All children need to return the permission note for bus travel by Friday 2 December. Please return notes to your child’s class teacher.
Night Performance:
Time : Band starts at 5.40, other children need to be at the venue by 6.10 but not before 6.00 (except for Choir / Band). Years K,1,2 to Auditorium 2 and Yrs 3-6 to Auditorium 1. Year 2 will join 3-6 in the main auditorium after their item.
Prior to the Show, and after the Band has performed, the Choir will be singing inside Auditorium 1 from 6.05pm. so please feel free to make your way to your seats during this
time. The Show starts at 6.30 and doors will be closed. The Show should conclude around 8.40pm.
Entry: This is by ticket only, purchased from P & C, but as this is a licensed club you will need to sign in and show driver’s license / ID. Any toddlers are expected to sit on their parents lap. Please allow time for this as lines can get very long and you may miss the opening audio visual.
Program: All children from every grade from K-6 will be on stage at some time starting with Kindergarten and moving in order through to Year 6. Each grade will perform and then remain on stage for the class awards to be presented. They will then return to their seats / Kinder and Year 1 to the auditorium.
Children in Kinder and Year 1 may be collected early from Auditorium 2 following the presentation of the new school leaders – at the end of Year 1 awards - but due to seating restrictions they cannot be brought back into Auditorium 1 where the show is being held.
Awards: On the night, a number of children from each class in K - 6 will be recognised for outstanding achievement. The number of awards will vary according to class enrolments. We will also announce School Leaders, House Captains, Sporting Blues (those children who have represented Hunter Region at State Carnivals), and Major Awards (generally Year 6).
Conclusion: At the end of the night Mr Lord will announce collection spots for each grade. Please pick your child up from this spot and notify their teacher that you have collected them - generally around 8.40pm.
The map for seating will be sent home in Week 9.
Security will not allow FOOD or ALCOHOL IN THE AUDITORIUM or allow people to stand at the rear of the auditorium, with or without strollers.
2017 Swimming Carnival for Zone Selection.
A note has gone home today for the 2017 swimming Carnival. If your child is a confident
swimmer and is able to swim 50m, fill out the note and return it to your class teacher. (not
the office)
All swimming carnival notes must be returned by Thursday, 8 December, 2016. After this
return date your child will be placed on a waiting list. The Carnival is for competitive
swimmers ONLY who are able to confidently swim 50m.
Cambodian Challenge Update.
Our Cambodian Challenge is going well, and we have now managed to sponsor another 31
children, bringing our total to 68 of our 209 children! That is a massive financial contribution
of $3400 from our school community! Each sponsorship provides one child in our Romdoul
school with a hot meal each day, a pair of shoes and a school uniform.
Thank you so much to the following families who have sponsored children in the past two
weeks:
The Walter Family & Century 21 Edgeworth
The Lovat Family
The Campbell Family
The Peck Family for Mrs Smart & Mrs Pike
The Dymoke-Bradshaw Family
Adana Greentree
The McPhail Family
The Pinchen Family
Meredith Collins
Mia & Ayla Higgins
The Murphy Family (Mrs Murphy 5M)
Blake Gordon
Remember that if your family, friends or workmates would like to sponsor a child this Christmas, this can be
done by sending $50 cash, or cheque made out to 'Jan Holbert', in an envelope outlining who the
sponsorship is from, a contact number and email address to which a photo of your sponsored child can
be sent. Please indicate the number of children you wish to sponsor and the amount of money
enclosed. If you would like to include a photo with your donation that would be great, or you can email one
to me at [email protected] . If you’d prefer to make a smaller donation to your child’s class
challenge, all classes are collecting small change donations in our Cambodian Piggy Banks. Some classes
are on to their second and third child! Thank you so much for your support with this drive.

Name Label Fundraiser
Labelling your children’s items is a great way of making sure that whatever your child/ren
takes to school, will come home! The P&C has an easy name label fundraiser happening
that can help you.
Bright Star Kids name tags, labels & other accessories is an easy way to tag your child’s
things. The labels are good quality, they’re reasonably priced, look good, prompt mail out
plus your child can design their own labels.
All you need to do is go to the website www.brightstarkids.com.au, choose what you’d like,
design your labels then once you have added the items to your cart and enter the checkout,
please type the fundraiser name (Wallsend South Public School) in the “Review &Pay”
section, under “Nominate a Fundraiser” at the bottom left.
Please allow a few moments for the website to search the database then simply click on the
school’s name and this will give the commission to our school.
Thanks for helping us raise funds for our school. Carmel Stormer.
