About YSDA

Youth for Sustainable Development Assembly (YSDA) is a youth-serving NGO based in the Philippines. Aspiring for greater youth involvement in sustainable development through volunteerism and youth leadership, YSDA builds global leaders who are equipped with an impressive knowledge and understanding of community empowerment, environmental advocacies and grassroots-led sustainable development.

YSDA provides young people a conducive environment to holistically practice sustainable development, implement community projects, engage decision-makers on issues that young people feel strongly the most, and learn more about themselves and the world around them.

We mainstream youth participation in key development themes such as social enterprise, sustainable agriculture, water security, environmental sustainability and decent work.

What we believe in

YSDA adheres to the principles of global leadership and community empowerment to support our advocacy of mainstreaming youth participation in sustainable development.

3

1. Global Leadership – YSDA believes in “thinking Globally and acting Locally”. We believe youth leaders should be able to understand that their local initiatives play a significant role in creating a better world for all of us, and that global decisions affect our work in local communities. We encourage interactions with different cultures and race, as it will help local youth leaders understand the value of cooperation and partnership, and eventually see the world as one community of actors working on the same cause but each with different roles to play.

2. Community Empowerment – The community is the heart of sustainable development. Communities can directly solve the problems, if they are given the capacity to do so. With this realization, YSDA gets involved in direct community actions and implement projects that address specific problems in the communities we partner with. YSDA has had projects on: ecological waste management, eco-tourism, forest management, coastal and marine resources management, education for sustainable development, sustainable water, sanitation and health, peace education and conflict resolution, off-grid renewable energy, green transport, organic food and sustainable agriculture, ICT, education and decent employment, social entrepreneurship, cultural heritage preservation, species and habitat conservation, community health nutrition.

What We Do

Our programs aim to promote intercultural and intergenerational understanding, civic engagement and global leadership among the youth leaders we work with. Primarily through volunteerism, we make sure to inculcate a sense of leadership and responsibility among communities, and provide valuable learning experiences for young people.

International Volunteerism

1. STV projects

2. LMTV projects

3. EVS & AVS projects – youth mobility projects that increase youth employability and

promote ICL, social entrepreneurship and global citizenship

4. Special work camps – thematic projects that focus specific needs of communities and

volunteers; example: World Heritage Volunteers projects

5. Bilateral/group projects – volunteer projects agreed upon by YSDA and partner

organizations

A child who is hungry cannot focus in class, performs less than adequately, loses motivation and stops going to school.

The Food for Thought focuses on uplifting public school students’ state of mind and health to motivate them to stay in school. It is held in partnership with selected public schools and project communities in Metro Manila and the Ateneo Center for Educational Development (ACED). The project provides volunteers an insight into the highs and lows of the Philippine education system, and the factors that keep (or exclude) Filipino students in school.

The poor state of many sanitation infrastructure and educational campaigns on sanitation hygiene are an oft-established fact. Even so, learning the basic sanitation and hygiene practices is of utmost importance as it is a child’s first foray into a healthy life.

The Community WASH Campaign focuses on inculcating Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) principles in the daily lifestyle of children for better appreciation of healthy living. Volunteers have the opportunity to explore different ways of educating children on basic WASH practices and relate these to bigger issues such as water security, quality education and human development.

In 1995, the Rice Terraces of the Cordilleras were inscribed into the list of World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre. It was a testimony to the Ifugao’s ingenuity and dedication to culture, which had led to the millennia-long maintenance of the rice terrace cluster system. When the Rice Terraces were declared as a World Heritage in danger in 1998, several efforts were made to combat its degradation. The terraces were later removed from the list, but even in 2014, the site still faces several challenges.

It continues to be vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and natural disasters. Local studies identify erratic rainfall, low temperatures, typhoons, severe weather patterns and fog/cloudiness as climate hazards that negatively affect pollination of native flora during the flowering stage, increase pest population, delay panicle initiation and grain formation, and cause plant stunting, among others. Furthermore, climate change has increased flooding depths, exacerbated soil loosening, caused more frequent landslides and collapse of dikes and terrace walls.

11Short-term Volunteer Projects

This project intends to explore how youth volunteerism could complement the implementation of terrace management plans, and address the vulnerability of the rice terraces to natural disasters. It also aims to engage decision-makers on involving volunteerism in integrated management plans and mechanisms for the rice terraces.
