THE BIG CREW CHANGE
The Deepwater Horizon oil rig burns in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010. The rig's crew were new to their positions just before the explosion.
71% of O&G personnel are 50 or older
Oil & Gas relies on Baby Boomers to fill most positions
50% — will retire within the next decade
2 Shell Exploration & Production Co. Elliott Masie's Learning 2015 Conference
At upstream integrated companies, we’ve found over 80% of personnel are retiring or can retire within five years
The staffing challenge comes even as crews venture into places where drilling is more difficult, like the Arctic and below the world's oceans.
Even before the Deepwater Horizon accident, companies had voluntary guidelines to make sure all their workers were adequately trained. Now federal regulators have made some of those voluntary guidelines mandatory
Thirty years ago…there was little or no training. It was literally, 'Here's your hard hat, some safety equipment, and go to work’. No longer - companies are going to be required to prove the individual has been trained
“Every 4 years, I turned over a whole crew. I had to train a new group of 18-19 year olds to be able to sail a fleet of aircraft carriers, submarines, destroyers, and other ships in the fleet, and to be prepared to go into battle around the globe.”
