Features Chapter 3
The following features are available with the system.
Account Code Entry
FEATURE DESCRIPTION
The Account Code Entry feature allows the entry of an account codes of up to 16 digits during a trunk call. An access code must be dialed to initiate the Account Code Entry during the call.
Account Codes are incorporated in the call records generated by the Station Message Detail Recording (SMDR) option and provides a reference for billing. The SMDR feature provides a choice as to whether or not incoming calls generate call records. Adding an account code causes a call record to be generated for incoming calls regardless of this SMDR setting. This eliminates reports on non-cost calls and provides billing references on calls generated by clients or customers.
Add-On Conference
Add-On Conference allows a conference call with a total of three parties with various combinations of outside lines and stations. This increases efficiency by allowing multiple parties to enter a conversation. The conference path is built into each IP multiline telephone using Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology and software control or by software only for the IPK Soft Phone.
3 - 2 Features

All Call Page
Paging allows persons who are away from their desk but within hearing distance of the telephone to receive a message. The page is heard over the built-in speaker on each IP telephone (except the IPK Soft Phone).
All Call Page allows simultaneous paging of all Multiline Telephones assigned to receive a page. A receiver can answer the page by dialling a specified number.
Alphanumeric Display
IP terminals have a 24-character by 3-line Liquid Crystal Display (LCD). These displays provide information such as: date/time, elapsed call time on outside calls, digits dialed, internal calling party number, Customized Message, Speed Dial entries or softkeys.
Answer Hold
Answer Hold allows an IP telephone user to press the flashing Answer key to answer an incoming ringing call. The the IP telephone user answers the first call, that call is automatically placed on Non-Exclusive Hold when a second call is answered. This feature speeds call handing and prevents accidental call dropping. This feature is especially useful at Attendant Positions or other central answering positions.
Answer Key
IP telephones have an Answer key with an LED that flashes when the telephone user receives an incoming CO/PBX call ringing. When multiple calls are received, the Answer key is used to pick up calls. The Answer key continues flashing until the last unanswered call is answered. Press the Answer key during a call to put the current call on hold allowing the next call to be answered.
Attendant Positions
Any station IP telephone can be designated as an Attendant Position. These stations have access to distinctive attendant-type features.

The Caller Identification (Caller ID) feature allows the user to see the calling party’s name and phone number (if provided by the Telco) in their telephone display.
When caller identification information is provided, the user can browse through their last 20 numbers by pressing a programmed Feature Access key. The user can dial the displayed Caller ID number by pressing the Speaker key or by lifting the handset.
The manner in which incoming Caller ID is displayed depends on system programming assignment.
Clock/Calendar Display
On multiline telephones equipped with an LCD, the time (hours, minutes, am/pm) and the date (day, day of week, month) are displayed while the telephone is idle. Telephones, assigned as attendants, can change the time and date. The clock can be set to automatically take into account Daylight Savings time, if desired.
Code Restriction
This feature allows outgoing calls to be restricted for individual telephones. Code Restriction for outgoing calls is based on the first eight digits dialed and denies outgoing calls based on numbers dialed over a trunk group. This eliminates unauthorized calls and configures system calling functions to provide cost control.
Dial 0 for Attendant
Stations can access a system Attendant Position by dialing 0 (zero). Legacy telephones can also be assigned as Attendant Positions.

Station Transfer allows any station user in the system to transfer a call to any other station. To initiate a Call Transfer, the user presses the Transfer Key. The transfer is completed when the user goes on-hook.
Stored Hookflash
Stored Hookflash allows any IP telephone user to store a hookflash in a speed dial buffer. This allows one-step access to some Centrex or PBX features.
System software allows users to input stored characters using the dial pad (use of the Character Code table is not allowed however).
System Data Up/Down Load
This feature is included with the NEC Electra Elite IPK Web Programming (WebPro) software. Up/Down Load allows system speed dial data and all system data to be transferred from/to a Pentium-compatible PC. System Data Up/Down Load can be performed from a remote location.

Two-Color LEDs
Multiline Terminals have Two-Color (green or red) LEDs for Flexible Line keys and the Large LED indications. The color indicates station status (red) or message status (green). Green indicates I-Hold (Exclusive and Non-Exclusive), I-Use, and recall conditions. Other functions are indicated with a red LED.
Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP)
The IPC CPU [IPCA( )-U( ) ETU] is an IP communication system that integrates voice terminals with peer-to-peer connections over a Data Communication IP Network (intranet). When the MG(8)-U10 ETU (Media Gateway) is installed, the IPCA( )-U( ) ETU can communicate with the CPUI( )-U( ) ETU (Legacy system) to accommodate both IP multiline telephones (Dterm IPK telephones) or IPK Video Soft Phones and Legacy system telephones (Electra Elite IPK telephones). The IP multiline telephones and/or IP Soft Phones are controlled by the IPCA( )-U( ) ETU. The Legacy telephones are controlled by the CPUI( )-U( ) ETU. The MG(8)-U10 ETU provides the actual speech paths between the two CPU ETUs.
The IPCA( )-U( ) ETU (with version 2.00) also provides 12 SIP tie lines for communicating with another IPK with an IPCA( )-U( ) ETU. With the MG(8)-U( ) ETU, both IP and legacy terminals can utilize these IP trunks.
The IPK Video Soft Phones support video on station calls or over the SIP trunks.
Zone Management
This feature is used to assign IP telephones to a zone on an MG trunk. This is used to program the best Voice Over IP parameters for conversations between zones. The IPCA( )-U( ) ETU supports a maximum of eight zones and each IP telephone can assign one to eight zones. Zone 1 is fixed to locate the KSU and the MG trunks.
Zone Management only sets codec type for connections between the IP terminal and the IPCA/MG on the local KSU. SIP Trunk calls are fixed to use the G.729A codec with RTP packet size of 40ms.

Multiline Terminal Programming Chapter 4
SECTION 1 GENERAL INFORMATION
When the system is initially installed, it if fully operational with the preset default settings. Users can customize the system by changing system programming values using either telephone programming or PC programming. This chapter provides detailed instructions for programming from a multiline telephone.
Telephone programming is designed for experienced users. If you are a first time user, use PC programming instead of telephone programming.
Only ITH telephones that are equipped with an LCD and assigned as attendant telephones can access multiline terminal programming. Only one attendant telephone in the system can be in telephone programming mode at the same time. If another user attempts to access programing mode, access is blocked and “BUSY” is displayed in their telephone LCD.
SECTION 2 ENTERING PROGRAMMING MODE
Once you have entered into programing mode you can access the various programming functions by using the softkeys. The memory block number provides access to the area you want to program.
To enter programming mode, press TULK J.

Glossary Chapter 10
Terms listed in the following table are used in this manual as well as terms and definitions that may be helpful in understanding the IPC system.
Term Definition
Bandwidth Bandwidth typically indicates how much information can be carried in a given time period (usually a second) over a wired or wireless communications link. For example, a link with a broad bandwidth - that is, a broadband link - is one that may be able to carry enough information to sustain the succession of images in a video presentation.
CODEC CODer/DECoder or COpression/DECompresson. A microprocessor chip is used to convert voice signals from analog to digital signals. The digital signals are then converted back to analog signals so they can be heard and understood by the human ear.
DHCP Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol provides a framework for passing configuration information to hosts on a TCP/IP network.
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
See DHCP.
File Transfer Protocol See FTP.
FTP File Transfer Protocol is a standard Internet protocol. It is the simplest way to exchange files between computers on the Internet. Like the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), which transfers displayable Web pages and related files, and the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), which transfers e-mail, FTP is an application protocol that uses the Internet's TCP/IP protocols. FTP is commonly used to transfer Web page files from their creator to the computer that acts as their server for everyone on the Internet. It's also commonly used to download programs and other files to your computer from other servers.

Gateway A gateway provides entrance and exit into a communications network. In technical terms, a gateway is an electronic repeater device that intercepts and steers electrical signals from one network to another. A gateway includes a signal conditioner which filters out unwanted noise and controls characters. In data networks, a gateway normally has a node on both networks to connect two otherwise incompatible networks. As an example, PC LAN users may need a gateway to gain access to a mainframe computer since the mainframe does not speak the same language (protocols) as the PCs on the LAN. In this case, a gateway on a data network performs code and protocol conversions.
See also LAN, Media Gateway and Network.
Internet The Internet is a collection of networks whose users communicate with each other. Each communication carries the address of the source and destination networks and the particular machine within the network associated with the user or host computer at each end. This address is called the IP address.
See also Network and IP Address.
Internet Protocol The Internet Protocol (IP) is the method or protocol by which data is sent from one computer to another on the Internet. Each computer (known as a host) on the Internet has at least one IP address that uniquely identifies it from all other computers on the Internet. When data is sent or received (e.g., an e-mail or a Web page), the message is divided into little chunks called packets. Each of these packets contains both the sender's Internet address and the receiver's address. Any packet is sent first to a gateway computer that understands a small part of the Internet. The gateway computer reads the destination address and forwards the packet to an adjacent gateway that in turn reads the destination address and so forth across the Internet until one gateway recognizes the packet as belonging to a computer within its immediate neighborhood or domain. That gateway then forwards the packet directly to the computer whose address is specified.
See also Gateway, Internet, IP Address and Packet.
IP Address Internet Protocol Address is typically a 32-bit number that identifies each sender or receiver of information that is sent in packets across the Internet. When an HTML page is requested or an e-mail is sent, the Internet Protocol part of TCP/IP includes the sender’s IP address in the message (actually, in each of the packets if more than one is required) and sends it to the IP address that is obtained by looking up the domain name in the Uniform Resource Locator that was requested or in the destination e-mail address. At the other end, the recipient can see the IP address of the Web page requestor or the e-mail sender and can respond by sending another message using the IP address it received.
An IP address has two parts: the identifier of a particular network on the Internet and an identifier of the particular device (which can be a server or a workstation) within that network. On the Internet itself - that is, between the router that move packets from one point to another along the route - only the network part of the address is looked at.

Jitter Buffer A jitter buffer is a shared data area where voice packets can be collected, stored, and sent to the voice processor in evenly spaced intervals. Variations in packet arrival time, called jitter, can occur because of network congestion, timing drift, or route changes. The jitter buffer, which is located at the receiving end of the voice connection, intentionally delays the arriving packets so that the end user experiences a clear connection with very little sound distortion. There are two kinds of jitter buffers, static and dynamic. A static jitter buffer is hardware-based and is configured by the manufacturer. A dynamic jitter buffer is software-based and can be configured by the network administrator to adapt to changes in the network's delay.
See also Network and Packet.
LAN Local Area Network is a short distance data communications network . LANs are used to link computers and peripheral devices (such as printers) together under standard control.
See also Network.
Local Area Network See LAN.
Media Gateway A media gateway is any device, such as a circuit switch, IP gateway, or channel bank that converts data from the format required for one type of network to the format required for another.
See also Gateway.
Network In information technology, a network is a series of points or nodes interconnected by communication paths. Networks can interconnect with other networks and contain subnetworks.
Packet A packet is the unit of data that is routed between an origin and a destination on the Internet or any other packet-switched network.
QoS Quality of Service is the idea that transmission rates, error rates, and other characteristics can be measured, improved, and, to some extent, guaranteed in advance on the internet and in other networks. QoS is particularly important to ensure continuous transmission of high-bandwidth video and multimedia information.
Quality of Service See QoS.
Real Time Control Protocol See RTCP.
Real Time Protocol Packet See RTP Packet.
Router When used on the Internet, a router is a device or computer software that determines the next network point to which a packet should be forwarded toward its destination. A router is connected to at least two networks and decides which direction to send each information packet based on the state of the networks to which it is connected. A router is located at any gateway (where one network meets another), including each Internet point-of-presence. A router is often included as part of a network switch.

RTCP Real Time Control Protocol is the companion protocol to RTP and allows monitoring of the data delivery in a manner scalable to large multicast networks, and provides minimal control and identification functionality.
See also RTP Protocol.
RTP Packet Real Time Protocol packets include relative time-stamping information that may differ both in time base and time increment for different source streams coming even from several applications running on one client computer.
See also RTP Protocol.
RTP Protocol Real Time Protocol supports transporting real-time data like interactive voice and video over packet switched networks.
The various services offered by RTP include payload type identification, sequence numbering, time stamping and delivery monitoring. RTP can sequence those packets, which arrive out of order at the receiving end. The sequence number can also be used to identify the lost packets. Time stamping is used for the proper play out of the media. The data arriving is continuously monitored by RTCP, which informs the RTP layer to adjust it’s coding and transmission parameters for the proper delivery of the data. For example if the RTCP layer detects severe packet loss, it may inform the RTP layer to slow down the rate of transmission.
See also TCP and RTCP.
SMDR Station Message Detail Recording, also called telephone call accounting. In the Electra Elite IPK system and MIFM-U( ) ETU is used to provide detailed outside call records of the system telephone usage. This provides cost control by identifying telephone users, trunk usage and digits dialed.
Station Message Detail Recording
See SMDR.
Subnet A subnetwork (subnet) is an identifiably separate part of an organization's network. Usually, a subnet represents all the machines at one geographic location, in one building, or on the same local area network. When an organization's network is divided into subnets it allows the network to be connected to the Internet with a single shared network address. Without subnets, an organization could get multiple connections to the Internet, one for each of its physically separate subnetworks, but this would require an unnecessary use of the limited number of network numbers the Internet has to assign. It would also require that Internet routing tables on gateways outside the organization would need to know about and have to manage routing that could and should be handled within an organization.
See also LAN, Network and Subnet Mask.

Subnet Mask A mask is simply a screen of numbers that tells the network which numbers to look at underneath. In a binary mask, a "1" over a number says "Look at the number underneath"; a "0" says "Don't look." Using a mask saves the router having to handle the entire 32-bit address; it can simply look at the bits selected by the mask.
Once a packet arrives at an organization's gateway or connection point with its unique network number, it can be routed within the organization's internal gateways using the subnet number. The router knows which bits to look at (and which not to look at) by looking at a subnet mask.
See also Network, Packet and Subnet.
Subnetwork See Subnet.
TCP Transport Control Protocol (TCP) is a set of rules (called protocols) that are used along with the Internet Protocol (IP) to send data in the form of message units between computers over the Internet. While IP takes care of handling the actual delivery of the data, TCP takes care of keeping track of the individual units of data (called packets) that a message is divided into for efficient routing through the Internet.
TCP cannot support the real time services such as interactive video and conferencing because TCP is rather a slow protocol, requiring three-way hand shaking.
See also Internet Protocol and Packet.
TDM Time-Division Multiplexing is a method of putting multiple data streams in a single signal by separating the signal into many segments, each having a very short duration. Each individual data stream is reassembled at the receiving end based on the timing.
The circuit that combines signals at the source (transmitting) end of a communications link is known as a multiplexer. A multiplexer accepts the input from each individual end user, breaks each signal into segments, and assigns the segments to the composite signal in a rotating, repeating sequence. The resulting composite signal contains data from multiple senders. At the other end of the long-distance cable individual signals are separated by means of a circuit called a demultiplexer, and routed to the proper end users. A two-way communications circuit requires a multiplexer/demultiplexer at each end of the long-distance, high-bandwidth cable.
Sometimes many signals are sent along a single long-distance line. In this case the TDM provides flexibility. TDM allows for the variation in the number of signals being sent along the line, and constantly adjusts the time intervals to make optimum use of the available bandwidth. The internet is an example of a communications network in which the volume of traffic can change drastically from hour-to-hour.

Transport Control Protocol See TCP.
Trivial File Transfer Protocol See TFTP.
UDP User Datagram Protocol is a communications protocol that offers a limited amount of service when messages are exchanged between computers in a network that use Internet Protocol (IP). UDP is an alternative to the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP).
See also TCP.
Uniform Resource Locator See URL.
URL A Uniform Resource Locator is the address or a file or a resource that is accessible on the Internet. The file type or resource depends on the Internet application protocol. The World Wide Web’s protocol uses Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). The resource for the protocol can included and HTML page, an image file, a common gateway interface type application, Java applet or any other file that is supported by HTTP. The URL includes the name of the protocol that is required to access the resource, a domain name that identifies a specific computer to the Internet and a path name (hierarchical description of a file location) on the computer.
User Datagram Protocol See UDP.
Vocoder A voice coder, consisting of a speech analyzer and a speech synthesizer. The analyzer converts analog speech waveforms into digital signals. The synthesizer converts the digital signals into artificial speech sounds.
