Innovation is More than Invention (2)

Innovation isn’t the same as invention. Innovation is a societal, not a technological,

phenomenon, one that arises from the intersection of invention and insight.”

Nine Dots Problem

Draw nine spots, as in figure. Nowwithout lifting your pen from the paper, draw four straight lines whichgo through all the dots.

The reason why you may not have been able to solve the problem is that unconsciously your mind imposed a framework around the nine circles. You have to go beyond that invisible box. From this problem, which John Adair introduced in 1969, comesthe phrase ‘Think outside the box!’

Barriers to Creativity

Why don’t we think creatively more often? What are the barriers that get in our way?Barrier that get in our way• Time• Why change?• Usually don’t need to be creative• Habit• Routine• Haven’t been taught to be creativeWhat are some other barriers that get in ourway?

Ford Model ‘T’ Car: the mindset of Henry Ford

Henry Ford’s model ‘T’ remained unchanged for years while GeneralMotors (Chevrolet) was making changes – often using new technology.Henry Ford said: We’ll give the customer any color he wants as long asit is black. It was a statement by a man who had been on top so long hethought nothing could dislodge him from that position. He did notperceive the effects that the changing environment would have oncustomer’s wants and needs, and in particular on their requirements interms of the motor car. Increasing consumer affluence, whichdeveloped as the American economy grew in the early part of thetwentieth century, meant that people had more disposable income andhence more capacity to exercise choice. General Motors recognizedthis, but Ford did not. In the late 1920s Ford nearly went out ofbusiness as a result of this myopic approach. General Motors(Chevrolet) took over as number one in the USA, and Ford did notcatch up until the late 1980s.Identify the blocks to creative thinking in this case? What action do you think Mr. Ford should take?

Lion Air Mendobrak Pakem Industri PenerbanganLion Air, meskapai penerbangan milik Rusdi Kirana yang mengandalkan konsep low cost carrier (LCC) berhasil mendobrak pakem industri penerbangan nasional.

Tiket murah menjadi tren baru. Maskapai domestik diajak berlomba adu irit.

Being the firstyou get so many privileges and

advantages.

Mellisa Poe - Kids FACE

In the summer of 1989, an episode of the television show "Highway to Heaven" disturbed Melissa Poe in Nashville, Tenn. The 9-year-old saw an angel played by Michael Landon take the viewer 25 years into the future and show what the earth would look like if no solutions to environmental problems were found. The earth was dead, there were no trees, children were dying of cancer.

Landon spoke at the end of the television show, saying it was not too late to change this bleak future. "It showed the world that was my future, and it was a world I couldn't survive in," said Poe. Trish Poe could see that her daughter was upset and encouraged her to deal with those feelings by taking action.

After watching the "Highway to Heaven" episode, Poewrote a letter to then-President George Bush, telling himhow concerned she was and asking him to help. Thepresident seemed an ideal choice to spread the word aboutsaving the environment.

The president eventually did reply, Poe said. Several months later, the White House sent a form letter that toldher to stay in school and not do drugs. There was nomention of the environment. "At first it made me angry, butthen it just made me want to do something more," she said.

Poe was recycling, planting trees, talking to friends and writing letters to newspapers and politicians -- "just anything to get involved," she said. She recruited six friends to form Kids F.A.C.E. at Percy Priest Elementary School.

She called billboard companies and convinced them to donate advertising space. By April of 1990, she had 250billboards with her letter to Bush posted across the UnitedStates. With the billboards, local news coverage of her activities and an appearance on the "Today Show," Poebegan to receive letters from other children asking whatthey could do.

Poe suggested to them that they start their own KidsF.A.C.E. club at school. The result is that Poe's club hasgrown from her six friends to 300,000 members in 20countries. The organization's newsletter, Kids F.A.C.E.Illustrated, goes out to over 3 million people.

Poe herself will continue to be on the board, but in October 1997, she stepped down as president, handing the reinsover to Rachel Jones and Ashley Craw, both 15. Poe saidshe is too old to lead the organization. "There's a lot ofclubs out there that say they're run by kids, but that's notexactly true," she said.

"Sometimes people think they can't do much, because they're only one person," Poe said. "But we need that

one person. When you think in terms of total worldpopulation, one in a million becomes a big number.

One in a million can make a difference.“- Mellisa Poe

Pemikiran Di Luar Batasan Konvensional

Seorang guru besar pemasaran dari Amerika dalamsuatu konferensi tahunan di New Orland mengatakan,”Price has nothing to do with cost.”

Golden Rulesof Creative Thinking

1. Start small trying to discover new ways to be creative, but start.

2. Give yourself permission to abandon the old, obsolete ways of doing things and explore new ways.

3. It is not possible to change the way we think about everything. Target specific areas in which to try creative thinking techniques.

4. Understand that creative thinking requires time, but it is worth it!

5. Remember that creative thinking is both hard work and fun.

Page 31: Elidjen Innovate or Die

Golden Rulesof Creative Thinking (2)

6. Focus on what you can reasonably do. Trying to do too many things at once compromises the effort and may take away from the results.

7. Practice creative thinking for today as well as tomorrow.8. Include other people in the creative thinking process

with you. Collaboration fosters creative thinking.9. Include “new and different” in your creative thinking

process as well as “better and more.”10. Keep innovating.

The Six Myths of Creativity

In an interview with Fast Company , Teresa Amabile bustedsix cherished myths about creativity.1. Creativity Comes From Creative Types2. Money Is a Creativity Motivator3. Time Pressure Fuels Creativity4. Fear Forces Breakthroughs5. Competition Beats Collaboration6. A Streamlined Organization Is a Creative Organization

Very creative people are often thought to be highly intelligent. While this is occasionally true, evidence shows that the connection between intelligence and creativity is not straightforward. Sternberg and O’Hara (1999) found people with low IQs are not likely to be exceptionally creative but above 120, there is no correlation between traditional intelligence and creativity. They even suggest that individuals with very high IQs may be rewarded so much for their analytical thinking that they do not reach their creative potential. Sternberg, R. J. and O’Hara, L. (1999). Creativity and intelligence (251-272). In R. J. Sternberg, Creativity handbook, (pp. 251-272). New York: Cambridge University Press.

Prioritas

Sebaliknya, tanpa agenda kegiatan, rumusan visi-misi yangagung mulia hanya menjadi khayalan semata.
