My country is Yemen. The population is 24,699,818. The main languages are Arabic and English. It is in the continent of Asia. The capitol is Sana’a. I want to know about the culture and products they produce.

Introduction

Yemen is a country in the Middle East. It is surrounded by Saudi Arabia to the north, Oman to the east, the Red Sea to the west and the Gulf of Aden to the south. The wadis of Yemen include Wadi Ahwar and Wadi Bana. Volcanos of Yemen include Jabal Zubair and Harra es-Sawad. Yemen is divided into 21 governorates. The largest one is Hadramawt. Major cites of Yemen are Sana’a, Aden Taizz and Al Hudayda. The tallest mountain is Jabal an-Nabi Shu’ayb located in Sana’a. The elevation is 3,666 meters high. One of the mountains of Yemen is Jabal Bura west of Sana’a. It has many endangered species. A major plant is qat. It is chewed and used to make tea.

Geography

Yemen’s climate is less dry than most of the Arabian Peninsula. It has more mountains than any desert country. There is good rainfall in the green valleys. The two rain seasons of Yemen are March to April and July to August. The temperature in the winter is 70 F and 30 F at night in Sana’a. Summer temperature is 85 F and 60 F at night in Sana’a. Some areas can go for 5 years without rain. Rainfall in desert areas have about 13 cm of rain every year. Lower highlands have 40-50 cm of rain every year.

Climate

The language of Yemen is Arabic. The national dish is saltah, a mixture of meat, rice and beans. Sports that are played are soccer, basketball, volleyball and others. The religion is Islam. Muslims at least 12 years old observe Ramadan. People don’t eat from eat from sunup till sundown . National holidays are New Year’s Day, Mouloud (Birth of the prophet), National Day, and Independence Day. Independence Day is on November 30. One of the famous poets is Abdullah al-Baradouni(1929-1999).He was blinded by a disease as a child, but became one of Yemen’s famous poets.

Culture

Oil is Yemen’s main product. The oil has come fast. Yemen is dependent on oil and experts fear that all of the oil will be used up in 2017. Yemen has the 4th largest growing population in the world. The currency is the Yemeni Rial. It is subdivided into 100 fils. The Gross Domestic Product is $63,400,000,000 U. S. Dollars. The unemployment rate is 35%.Yemen exports crude oil, coffee, and dried fish. It imports food, machinery, and chemicals.

Economy

In 1101 Queen Arwa became the queen of Saba. In 1507 the Ottomans occupied and invaded Yemen and took control of it for 100 years. In the 1830s the Ottomans went to North Yemen. In 1839 the British forces took control of Aden. In 1918 the Ottomans left Yemen. In 1962 military turned North Yemen into the Yemen Arab Republic. In 1967 the British forces gave back Aden and it became the capital of the People’s Democratic Republic of South Yemen. In 1990 Yemen was unified into the Republic of Yemen.

History

Interesting Facts

Yemen is a country with a big history. Over the years we know what happen for example the division of North and South Yemen and the occupation by the Ottoman Empire. We see the landforms and the wadis and mountains. Of course we have more questions to ask about the government of who occupied it other than Ottomans. All in all Yemen is a great country.
