i was in new york City this spring, and couldn’t help but notice how many of the artists performing in the clubs were also going to play here at this summer’s stanford Jazz Festival. While our goal isn’t necessarily to recreate the new york jazz scene here on campus, we are always looking and listening for the most compelling and creative voices in jazz.

at the stanford Jazz Festival, we bring you more than just a selection of great jazz that covers a variety of genres. We search for artists who collectively represent as many viewpoints as possible, including living legends, young lions, and strong visionary men and women who are leading musical projects that bring a multicultural perspective to this american art form.

additionally, every summer, our renowned stanford Jazz Workshop education programs are the magnet that brings artists into residence in our community. having these artists come together to teach and perform enables us to offer you something unique: exciting concerts by combinations of musicians whom no one anywhere has ever heard play together. the results can be magical, and represent one of the ways stanford Jazz Workshop has for decades nurtured the creativity of the art form.

When i return to new york next year, i won’t be surprised to find musicians playing together who deepened their creative connections here at sJW. thank you for being part of this supportive and enthusiastic community of artists, students and listeners who are helping to move the music forward. Welcome to the 2015 stanford Jazz Festival!

TheStanfordJazzFestival(SJF)attracts over 15,000 jazz fans every summer with artistic programming that represents the rich history of jazz, as well as the diversity and creative fertility of the contemporary jazz scene. over the years, many of the greatest jazz artists have performed at sJF: in addition to the artists listed above, DaveBrubeck,HerbieHancock,JoeHenderson,DaveHolland,LouisBellson,HankJones,ClarkTerry,JoeWilliams,RoyHaynes,ChristianMcBride, and many dozens of other legendary artists have appeared at the Festival.

though sJW and the stanford Jazz Festival have grown tremendously since the days of the jazz jams, the core values remain: to provide an informal environment in which fans,

students, artists, and educators can come together as a community each year to celebrate their love of jazz. We invite you to experience the many facets of this year’s Festival by attending several sJF events. the best way to do so is by becoming an sJW member, with substantial benefits — including early access to the best seats and other exclusive perks, such as our members listening Party with Eliane Elias on June 19. Please explore the advantages of membership on pages 8 – 9.

Uniting Jazz Education and Performance TheStanfordJazzWorkshop(SJW)started in 1972 as an informal jam session for musicians who wanted to learn more about jazz. since then, it’s grown into one of the premier jazz education organizations in the world, attracting top jazz musicians and educators to come and mentor talented students from around the world at its summer programs. Paired with exposure to additional jazz headliners in concert through the concurrent stanford Jazz Festival (sJF), this powerful experience has had a lasting impact on over 20,000 students, from middle school ages through adults.

some of the world’s best known jazz musicians have taught at sJW, from StanGetzandDizzyGillespietoMcCoyTyner,RayBrown,BranfordMarsalis,JimmyHeath,GeriAllen,PhilWoods,MulgrewMiller,SheilaJordan,ChickCorea,KennyBarron,GeorgeCables, andmanyothers.many former sJW students have emerged as the jazz stars of today, including JoshuaRedman,RaviColtrane,TaylorEigsti,AmbroseAkinmusire,EthanIverson,JennyScheinman,JulianLage,DaynaStephens,LarryGrenadier,BillStewart, andmore. thanks to generous supporters such as you, sJW’s new year-round activities are now serving dozens of middle school instrumentalists and vocalists in the giant steps big band and giant steps Jazz singers after-school programs. learn more about how you can help sJW serve even more deserving students on the following page, and at stanfordjazz.org.

AttheStanfordJazzWorkshop,we know that jazz makes the world a better place. it’s an art form rooted in self-expression, cooperation, active listening, and mutual respect for everyone’s voice. it teaches one to embrace the unexpected, to find beauty in spontaneity, and to champion teamwork. the benefits of exposure to jazz are even more pronounced among young people. Kids who play jazz early in life develop improved social and cognitive skills, and find a lifelong love of music. they benefit from contact with the positive role models they encounter as members of the extended sJW community.

the core mission of sJW is to provide the benefits of jazz immersion programs to all musicians who have an interest in jazz. Equally important is our goal of delivering world-class jazz performances for over 15,000 Festival attendees each year. your support, at any level, helps us achieve these key objectives in many ways:

> Allows us to provide financial aid and scholarships to students who might otherwise be unable to attend our programs. Every year, over 100 of our students benefit from financial aid and scholarship support.

> Enables us to expand our programming to bring high quality jazz education to a variety of communities year-round.

> Helpsus bring artists of the highest caliber to perform at the Festival and teach in our summer and year-round programs.
