    Summer 2013

    POSITION: ELI Residence Don

    The Renison Residence and English Language Institute are looking for Dons for two programs: English for Academic

    Success (EFAS) and English for Success (EFS). EFAS is a six week program focusing on academic skills generally

    leading to study at the University of Waterloo in September. The EFS program is an experiential learning program

    to develop English skills. Successful candidates will be offered a contract based on suitability of candidate and

    program needs.

    RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

    Helping to prepare for students arrivals and assisting students when they arrive and depart Familiarizing students with Renison, the university campus and surroundings Helping facilitate student orientation sessions Providing support and resources for students at all hours throughout the program duration Coordinating and participating in extracurricular activities, preparing for and participating in some class

    programming (ie. Skit Night)

    Facilitating printing in the library and writing times during scheduled times Communicate with other dons, Residence and ELI staff to ensure someone is always available to the

    students

    Taking duty shifts, including lock-up and rounds Assisting students with homework and language skills as requested Respond to emergency situations (ie. Fire alarm, student crisis, injury or illness) and report to supervisors Work with staff and the other Dons to promote the spirit of Renison: a home-like atmosphere, a place

    of holistic personal growth, a study environment, and a caring supportive presence.

    Know and observe the standards, rules, and regulations of Renison University College and the residence,as well as effectively communicating such to other residents.

    Work with the students in residence to establish and maintain an atmosphere of order and quiet,conducive to studies and community living; and to promote the residence as an integral part of the

    educational environment. Monitor situations of group living that may develop into problems and to work closely with the other

    Dons, and staff to resolve problem situations.

    Hold floor meetings on a regular basis and keep the students informed of all residence and campus eventsand issues.

    EXPECTATIONS:

    The don position is considered your primary activity. All additional activities, employment, volunteerwork must be approved by your coordinator.

    Required to meet weekly as a don team and weekly on an individual basis with your coordinator. Responsible for planning and implementing floor and college wide social events. Required to attend Don Training prior to program start dates. Responsible for the residence during the week from 4:30 pm to 7:30 am and weekend 24 hours beginning

    4:30 pm on Friday until 7:30 am on Monday.

    Duties with various committees will be assigned by the Director of Residence and Student Life. Dons are expected to be on the floors as much as possible in the evening during the week with specific

    scheduled times during Duty Shifts and other evenings as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Creative, leadership skills, communication skills, can work under pressure, strong ethics and values,listening skills, conflict resolution skills, compromise, problem solving skills, sense of humor, maturity, role

    modeling attributes, honesty, and balance.

    Experience working with international students is an asset. Knowledge of Renison University College, the University of Waterloo and the City of Waterloo is an asset.

    COMPENSATION:

    ROOM AND BOARD in the Renison University College residence, and

    SALARY:

    $300/week

    START DATE:

    There are multiple start dates for the program. Individual candidates start dates will be evaluated after

    interviews are completed.

    Program 2: July 17, 2013 September 1, 2013

    Program 3: July 29, 2013 September 1, 2013
