THE CURTISS-WRIGHT ADVANTAGECurtiss-Wright is a technological leader in providing COTS products and open architecture solutions for mission computing, signal processing, graphics, communication fabrics, system and sensing I/O and chassis products.

The “building block” approach to providing solutions gives our customers great benefits with respect to cost, lead time and supportability. While providing these non-developmental items, the technology developed and the intellectual property also becomes a benefit for our customers in the ability to provide custom or point-design products when necessary.

Curtiss-Wright has products on hundreds of defense programs and continues to provide support throughout their life cycle. This experience has taught us that long term support, obsolescence management, and security are key aspects of every defense program, and sometimes raises concerns of risk when applying COTS technology. In order to eliminate this concern, Curtiss-Wright provides product families for a volume production period of five to seven plus years. During this period, products undergo continuous improvement through software revisions, reliability enhancements and component upgrades. We realize our defense customers require knowledge, and often control, of these improvements. Application stability and predictability is essential for deployed mission-critical systems, which have an in-service life long past the volume production period. To meet these marketplace demands, Curtiss-Wright provides a suite of Continuum Lifecycle Services that safeguard your programs and mitigate the challenges associated with leveraging COTS technology for

long-term mission-critical systems.

Curtiss-Wright delivers complete system of systems integration and support services that reduce interoperability risks,

lowers program costs and accelerates time to market. Each system of systems project is provided with a single

Curtiss-Wright program manager and single technical point of contact.

Our single point of contact approach eliminates the supply chain overhead created by multiple purchase orders, separately negotiated terms and conditions, and different repair and warranty support sites. This frees up valuable resources to focus on your unique integrated solution.

Curtiss-Wright performs complete on-site field testing, integration support and training for all systems

to ensure the platform integration process goes smoothly. Our engineers address any on-site integration

challenges, leveraging decades of experience developing rugged embedded components and systems for defense and

aerospace customers worldwide. Full life-cycle and obsolescence ensures support is extended beyond integration.

Curtiss-Wright has been designing and manufacturing Air Data Computer (ADC) products since 1976 and has an installed base of over ten thousand units. The highly configurable and reliable air data units are TSO-C106 and RTCA DO-178/254 DAL A certified on 30 aircraft platforms. They store up to 15 configurations in a single unit allowing the same physical unit to be used across different aircraft platforms regardless of aircraft size. This reduces the cost of ownership through reduced spares requirements and simplified, flexible fleet management.

The Curtiss-Wright ADCs calculate critical air data parameters such as altitude, height deviation, air temperature, airspeed, Mach, max allowable airspeed and signal validities. They produce high accuracy height readings for RVSM applications and a highly reliable IVSI output. Low airspeed accuracy required for helicopter applications is achieved using electronic filtering to negate the effects of rotor-wash from the display screens. Compared to traditional mechanical solutions, this method reduces the cost of ownership by reducing weight and removing maintenance issues for the operators.

• High accuracy altitude parameter output

• Lightweight and compact

• Pin-link configurations supporting up to 15 different aircraft configurations

ADC - Air Data ComputerThe ADC is designed using the latest high stability, low drift vibrating cylinder pressure transducer technologies and safety

targeted electronics. It weighs less than 1.54 lb (0.7 kg), is simple to install, operate, maintain and provides low ownership costs.

ADCM - Air Data Computer Module

The ADCM is a slot-in module for integration into host equipment that weighs less than 0.9 lb yet contains the pneumatic sensors, processing electronics and high accuracy vibrating cylinders to generate the complete ICAO air data parameter set.

Tri-Port ADC The Curtiss-Wright Tri-Port Air Data System provides a solution to meet future requirements for aircraft operating in NextGEN/SESAR airspace. The systems comprises of a latest technology lightweight combined Pitot/Static/Angle of Attack probe and Air Data Computer that outputs the complete ARINC 575 set of air data parameters to drive EFIS displays, flight directors and stall warning computers. Tri-Port meets Design Assurance Level (DAL) A requirements for hardware (DO-254) and software (DO-178C) and is certified to EASA/FAA TSOs C16a and c106 and is available for new aircraft programs as well an upgrade kit for in-service aircraft with an EASA Part 21J/FAA STC package.

Cost of ownership is minimized by using vibrating cylinder technology sensors which are drift-free and require no calibration or routine maintenance. Built-In static source error correction allow the same part number to be used across different aircraft type or “fleets within fleets” in order to minimize spare pools and logistics costs.

Air Data AccessoriesCurtiss-Wright supplies single operator, fully functional tests systems to enable fast fault finding, calibration and turnaround of aircraft. They simulate aircraft flying characteristics to visually calibrate cockpit instruments in-situ, without the need to remove them from the aircraft, reducing ground time and calibration costs.

Curtiss-Wright’s multi-function controller products are developed using reliability orientated processes to reduce schedule and certification risks. They are designed and manufactured in accordance with DO-254 and DO-178B/C DAL A. Using these principles we have developed an extensive range of Data Concentrator Units (DCU), Remote Data Concentrators (RDC), Remote Interface Units (RIU), Utility Management Systems (UMS), Vehicle Management Systems (VMS) and dedicated controllers.

Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) standardsCurtiss-Wright’s next generation multi-function controller technologies adhere to TSO-C153 Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) standards, enabling a fast-track approach to certification. The adaptable modular architecture facilitates rapid availability of pre-defined interfaces that are designed to support a wide range of I/O needs in a compact, lightweight and low power package.

The ARINC 653 Avionics Application Standard Software Interface provides support for custom development COTS real-time operating systems such as Wind River’s VxWorks or Green Hills’ Integrity-178B. A wide range of solutions can be developed rapidly using this technology, including upgradable UMS, DCU and controller products.

Remote Data Concentrators and Remote Interface UnitsCurtiss-Wright’s Remote Data Concentrators (RDC) and Remote Interface Units (RIU) are built using the technology developed for the DCUs, enabling rapid development of custom solutions. These are increasingly popular for their ability to reduce weight by reducing wire length and weight to simplify aircraft systems design. They provide a two-way gateway and support line replaceable units (LRU) in next generation aircraft.

Vehicle Management Systems (VMS)The VMS products provide electronic system control and monitoring to support flight management. They collect, package and transmit local discrete, analog and digital data inputs, and control local functions based on received data. The VMS can perform several functions including engine control, electrical power distribution, flap control and monitoring, fuel system monitoring and crew alerting systems in a single package with system/subsystem BIT functions.

Utility Management Systems (UMS)Curtiss-Wright’s UMS products receive diverse discrete, digital and analog inputs to effectively communicate with a large number of aircraft systems via its communication network and monitor and control aircraft subsystems. They scale and format the inputs, perform fault detection and isolation, and provide information regarding the inputs to other subsystems. The UMS also outputs discrete commands to various devices for on/off control. The UMS is intended to be located in an area which requires monitoring and/or control functions to reduce the quantity and weight of aircraft wiring.

ControllersCurtiss-Wright manufactures dedicated controllers designed for specific applications such as fire or ice protection, turbine overspeed, thrust reverser and various electric or hydraulic motor controllers. These feature a rugged construction, an assortment of control inputs/outputs with high configuration flexibility via data tables.

Ice Protection ControllerCurtiss-Wright’s Ice Protection Controller (IPC) efficiently keeps surfaces such as engine inlets and windshields free from icing. Using onboard electrical power eliminates bleed air demand on engines and helps to improve propulsion efficiency. Zero-crossing AC power switching is used to minimize switch stresses and lower EMI. Circuits ensure that a “soft-start” load current is used so power systems and target surfaces are not suddenly strained. The IPC monitors faults such as load current and voltage, temperature sensors and internal faults. The IPC is available with heater mats that feature a low thermal mass for rapid heating/cooling to efficiently remove ice - thick to very thin. This also helps to minimize runback/refreeze ice that forms beyond protected zones and minimize the size of shed ice particles.

Rotor Ice Protection Systems (RIPS)The Rotor Ice Protection System (RIPS) is an electro thermal de-icing device for the main rotor blades and anti-icing device for the tail rotor blades. It extends operational capacity in mixed or unpredictable weather without risking safety, mission or equipment. Its operation based on outside air temperature and highly accurate ice severity detection for more efficient power usage and less stress on rotor blades.

The system continually self-tests and monitors. When icing conditions are detected, it automatically delivers controlled de-icing power to the helicopter’s rotor blade heating elements on helicopter rotors. The power is regulated so that small sections of the rotor blades are de-iced alternately thus reducing the amount of electrical power required at any given time. Opposite main rotor blades are de-iced symmetrically in order to prevent rotor imbalance.

• Automatic or manual operation

• Power sequencing algorithms lower power consumption and vibration

• High shock and vibration resistance

• Dual control via cockpit panel or ARINC 429

• Discrete and serial digital data outputs

• Dual redundant RIPS controllers, certified to DO-178B, DAL B

Features

Icing Severity Detection SystemCurtiss-Wright’s Icing Severity Detection System (ISDS) facilitates safety in the hover and can reduce rotor blade damage, airframe stress, fatigue checks/inspections and prevent a complete transmission overhaul. The ISDS continuously measures build up from liquid water, providing a rapid warning of changing conditions. A rapid response time of less than 20 seconds for 1.0 gm/m3 liquid water content provides the pilot with invaluable advanced notice of changing conditions – even in the hover. Curtiss-Wright’s achievements enable you to push your flight envelope and reduce your ground time.

Smoke DetectorsWith more than 100,000 open air and ducted smoke detectors delivered to date, our industry leading next-generation smoke detectors use highly reliable components and the multiple criteria particle discrimination principle to help eliminate more than 99 percent of the false alarms that are commonly encountered in the aircraft environment.

This improves profit for airlines due to fewer delayed flights and fewer flight diversions. Additionally these detectors dynamically compensate for dirt build-up to drastically reduce the frequency of required maintenance activities. They are also designed to be electrically and mechanically backward and forward compatible to enable simple upgrades to existing fire systems.

Features• Superior immunity to false smoke stimuli

• Fast installed response time to real fire

• TSO-C1d approved

• Significantly reduces maintenance cost due to higher tolerance of dirt build-up (auto-bias compensation)

• Backward & forward compatibility

Lavatory Smoke Detector SystemsSmoke detectors utilize proven next generation smoke detector technology to accurately indicate when smoke is present. These can be used with an optional remote indicator that provides a flashing light indicator and a flight attendant panel that provides aural warnings, flashing light indicator and system test functions.
