Using MIDI MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Inter-face) is a world-standard digital com-municat ions interface/ language thatallows multiple electronic instruments, computers, and other relates device tocommunicate with each other within aconnected.

The MIDI IN port receives MIDI data froman external MIDI device. The MIDI OUTport transmits MIDI data to an externalMIDI device. The instruments communi-ca te w i th each o ther by send ing

'messages' or MIDI data. The sendinginstrument usual ly assigns the data to oneof the sixteen MIDI channels, thentransmits i t over the MIDI cable. The cableitself, however, is not divided up intosixteen channels, just as with a televisionset that receives programs on differentchannels, it is up to the receiving instru-

ment to 'tune into' the proper MIDI channel .If the sending and receiving channels onthe respect ive instruments do not match, the receiving instrument may not un-derstand or respond to the one sending.
