Introduction of BatteryAn electric battery is a device consisting of two or more electrochemical cells that convert stored chemical energy into electrical energy. Each cell has a positive terminal, or cathode, and a negative terminal, or anode. The terminal marked positive is at a higher electrical potential energy than is the terminal marked negative. The terminal marked positive is the source of electrons that when connected to an external circuit will flow and deliver energy to an external device. The usage of "battery" to describe a group of electrical devices dates to Benjamin Franklin, who in 1748 described multiple Leyden jars by analogy to a battery of cannon.(Benjamin Franklin borrowed the term "battery" from the military, which refers to weapons functioning together). Alessandro Volta built and described the first electrochemical battery, the voltaic pile, in 1800. This was a stack of copper and zinc plates, separated by brine-soaked paper disks.

Principle of operation
Batteries convert chemical energy directly to electrical energy. A battery consists of some number of voltaic cells. Each cell consists of two half-cells connected in series by a conductive electrolyte containing anions and cations. One half-cell includes electrolyte and the negative electrode, the electrode to which anions (negatively charged ions) migrate; the other half-cell includes electrolyte and the positive electrode to which cations (positively charged ions) migrate. Redox reactions power the battery. Cations are reduced (electrons are added) at the cathode during charging, while anions are oxidized (electrons are removed) at the anode during charging. During discharge, the process is reversed.

Battery selectionThere are some types of batteries for EV such as Lead-Acid, Lithium-Ion, Nickel-Cadmium and Nickel-Metal-Hydride. To model battery, selection of battery is one of the most crucial factors that have to be considered. However the first priority considering EV is how long EV can drive with the battery. Therefore, weight and energy density of the battery should be considered first. Hence, the battery which has high energy density and low weight should be contemplated to use for EV. In this respect, Li-Ion batteries are getting the limelight because of its high energy density and relatively low weight. Therefore, Li-Ion battery is used for EV.

ConclusionThis research demonstrates that the matlab simulation battery model allows for an adequate representation of a battery’s real behavior. In battery simulation model it has been found that less internal resistance gives more efficient output. Energy density and weight of the battery is the main factor to choose a battery. In this respect, Li-ion batteries are getting the limelight because of its high energy density and relatively low weight. Therefore, we used Li-ion battery.
