Pen Portrait:I am currently working in an orthopaedic rehabilitation centre where I am also doing my research. I mainly work with amputees, but also with psy-chosomatic patients and patients with general needs in terms of psycho-logical counselling. The health of patients is not only impaired in terms of physical well-being but also psychological well-being as symptoms such as chronic pain or chronic diseases in many cases can lead to severe psy-chological problems which can also turn out to be chronic. All disciplines at the rehabilitation centre are working closely together, therefore I am often confronted with topics like health care management, health care provision or ageing. My PhD research is focusing on mental health and quality of life of patients during rehabilitation.

Pen Portrait: My interest lies in the effect that modern diets, food supply and food environments have on our health, in particular on obesity and non-com-municable diseases. Working for an NGO, a lot of my time is spent ad-vocating for better policies to improve food and challenge food industry practices which promote consumption of unhealthy diets. Specifically I work on issues around food marketing to children, formulation and pro-motion of processed foods, fiscal measures and trade agreements. Of particular concern are the policies and actions that promote market in-terests at the expense of public health. As such, my PhD is exploring the effectiveness of NGO advocacy and the opportunities that exist for challenging market power in favour of health through monitoring, bench-marking and accountability mechanisms. The organisation that I work for is in official relations with UN/WHO and we are regularly consulted and invited to provide expert advice on obesity, nutrition and food issues.

Relevant memberships: N/A

Relevant professional activities and past achievements: With a special interest in Human rights, I started my professional experi-ence with two internships within Brussels-based NGOs as Assistant Policy Officer: EUROCHILD and the EUROPEAN PATIENTS’ FORUM. My work at EMSP focusses on managing projects and programmes that involve:• Exchanging and disseminating information relating to MS considering

all issues relevant for people affected by MS.• Encouraging research of all kinds that is appropriate to MS through

recognised medical and other organisations.• Acting as a focal point for liaison with the institutions of the European

Relevant professional activities and past achievements: My role at IDF is focused on a number of epidemiology projects, the most relevant one for now being the IDF Diabetes Atlas. For the 6th Edition, re-leased on World Diabetes Day 2013, I was responsible for generating the Methodology to estimate the prevalence of Hyperglycaemia in pregnan-cy. Moreover I was involved in generating the estimates of the global bur-den of Diabetes in adults as well as in pregnancy. These estimates were also published in a peer reviewed journal (Diabetes Research and Clinical practice). Besides this work I am responsible for presenting Atlas data at international congresses such as ADA, EASD and EUPHA. In February 2014 I was elected as the head of the working group on demography of the Young Lions Health Care Parliament. The YL-Parliament was initiat-ed by Janssen to gather together young professionals that provide new ideas to enhance the performance of the German health care system.

Pen Portrait: Having a background in European Public health I have specialised in re-search on NCDs, with a particular focus on diabetes. Even though more high-quality studies than ever before are available on the burden of NCDs, more studies are needed to describe the burden of NCDs in order contribute to an evidence base that is fundamental in driving powerful advocacy for people with NCDs.

Relevant memberships: Public Health Research Group at Central European University

Relevant professional activities and past achievements: N/A

Key words: HTA, priority-setting, rationing, health care governance, health care re-form

Pen Portrait: I am a PhD candidate at the Central European University in Budapest, in the Department of Public Policy. I am interested in the politics of health-care priority-setting. My doctoral project focuses on the (non) diffusion of health technology assessment (HTA) agencies in Central and Eastern Europe, comparing in-depth the history and evolution of HTA in Poland and the Czech Republic. I hold an MA degree in Political Science from Sciences Po Paris (2009), where I wrote my master’s thesis on Slovak pension and healthcare reforms, and an MA degree in European Inter-disciplinary Studies from the College of Europe in Natolin (2010). During 2011-2012 I worked as a health policy analyst at Edelman in Brussels and did an internship in the EU public affairs division of Novartis. I have taught political science related classes at the Central European Univer-sity and Sciences Po Paris, University College in Dijon. I read and write in Czech, English, French and also speak German, Polish and some Hun-garian. My geographical area of interest is Central and Eastern Europe. I am interested in the politics of health care governance. Specifically I am interested in the politics of priority-setting/rationing and the use of health technology assessment for priority-setting purposes. I focus on HTA in Central and Eastern Europe, looking primarily at the advisory or regulato-ry agencies that carry out value for money assessments. At the moment I am keenly observing the EU influence on national HTA, including the role of EUnetHTA and member state responses to the article 15 HTA network. I am also interested in the role of patient organisations in pricing and reimbursement decision-making in Central and Eastern Europe.

Pen Portrait: The work of a basic researcher in virology consists in elucidating how such a small particle as a virus hijacks the cellular machinery of such a complicate organism as the human being in order to suggest new thera-peutic strategies. Daily work requires plenty of enthusiasm and patience. It includes finding novel ideas, searching for funding, developing the funded projects and publishing results in high impact journals so that other researchers can take advantage of the new findings. Because the calls for funding are very competitive, only the best researchers success-fully manage to finance their projects. Key words: Public health, obesity, epidemiology, equity, environmental lifestyle de-terminants

Pen Portrait: At the moment I am involved in the European SPOTLIGHT project, which aims to identify determinants of adult obesity and describe effective pre-ventive obesity interventions. The focus lies on both macro and micro physical, social, economic and political determinants of obesity. One of my special interests is the interaction between individual and environ-mental factors, given the complexity of human adiposity. Since exper-imental studies with environmental factors are often unethical or not feasible, it remains a challenge to translate findings from observational studies to input for public policy. One of these challenges is the fact that individuals are not randomly distributed among for example neighbour-hoods; people have specific interests that make them live where they live. Any associations found in observational research that does not take into account this residential self-selection may generate erratic results. Lastly, the inequitable distribution of obesity across different groups de-serves both research and policy attention.

Although the diseases are one by one rare, based on the calculation of the European Commission there are more than 29 million people in the European Union who are suffering from a rare disease. Nowadays, this area is a public health priority across the developed world. The European Union assigned the second three year programme (EUROPLAN II.) that is responsible for the coordination of common actions across the member countries. My research topic is on evidence based decisions in the field of rare diseases. There is an existing desire for a new evaluation process which can handle these sometimes extremely expensive technologies. Over the last decade, I was involved in European projects focusing on benchmarking emergency care delivery and system design in cross-country comparisons. These analyses were based on routinely collected data on the emergency patient, the treat-ment and logistics. Such routine information from patient records, but also medication sales or Twitter messages are a novel source of sur-veillance information for rapidly assessing the health impact of various threats, from the influenza pandemic or a heat wave to the influx of Af-rican migrants or the financial crisis. This approach, called syndromic sur-veillance, is the topic of recent European research projects I was involved in and of my PhD. In my current position as policy advisor for cross-border emergency care between Germany and the Netherlands, I can tap into expertise gained on emergency care and European collaboration.
