Mr. Rodolfo Laroya Iglesias is a 72 years old person who is living in Parang 1, Ibaba,

Samal, Bataan. He was born on March 5, 1943 in Bautista, Pangasinan. He is a married person

with 8 children and with 25 grandchildren. He studied and finished his elementary school

because his parents cannot send him to high school because of poverty. Mr. Rodolfo is wearing a

polo shirt and an ordinary short. He has grayish hair and mustache. He also has dark colored skin

and he walks slowly. His motto in life is “Life is too short, so be wise enough to spend your life

in things that are enjoyable”.

This is the content of the interview in a Question and Answer format:

1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of being older?

“For me the advantage of being old is that I can have discount on jeepneys or even

tricycle when I am travelling and when I am sick I also have discount on hospital fee.

And another thing is I don’t need to do choirs in the house because I am not that strong

enough to work. My children do the choirs in our house. The disadvantage of being old is

that I can’t do the things that I used to do when I was young”.

2. What are the difficulties which a senior citizen generally faces in a day to day basis?

“We easily get sick and we don’t have enough strength and ability to do the things that

we want to do.”

3. What was the single most important thing that has enabled you to enjoy being

older? Please say anything that comes to mind.

“Free of problems. When I was young I had so many problems in life like financial

problem, family problems and so many more. But now, my mind is relax and peaceful. I

don’t need to work because my children are working and they are giving me money every

day. I’m just enjoying my life and I’m just waiting for my time to come.”

4. You have come at an age after witnessing many phases of your life. Which phase do

you think was the best? Tell something about this phase.

“The best part of my life was when I met my wife and have 8 children. For me that was

the happiest thing that I received in my life. Without them my life will not be meaningful.

I love my family more than I love myself”.

5. According to you, what are the things which a senior citizen should bear in mind?

“Enjoy your life to the fullest. Always bear in mind that being a senior citizen is not a

burden phase. It is one of the enjoyable phase in life”.

6. Cite one suggestion which you would like to give to a person who is on the verge of

attaining senior citizen status.

“Accept that you are going to be a senior citizen and enjoy!”

7. What words of wisdom do you have to give to us?

“Focus on your study and don’t get married at an early age. Help your parents.”

Mr. Rodolfo is an attentive person. He had eye to eye contact with me while I am asking

him a question and he knows what I am saying and he can easily answer my questions. He

focused on enjoying his life being a senior citizen and he was a cheerful person with full of

wisdom. He knows the benefits of being a senior citizen and he did not regret that he came to

that phase. For me, senior citizens are easily to talk with because they can give wisdom that can

help us in our daily life. They are full of knowledge and we need to respect them. Even though

they can’t do the things that we can do, still they are striving to help their family by doing little

things in the society. Love from the family is one of the happiness of senior citizens. Caring and

acceptance is also one of the greatest thing that a senior citizen needs to have.
