FROM FATHER CHUCK’S DESK We hear the story of the Transfiguration today, as we do every second Sunday of Lent. Jesus takes Peter,

James and John with Him up on the mountain top and they have a vision of Moses and Elijah there with Jesus, and Jesus is transfigured into a shining white light. In a few weeks we will tell the story of Jesus in the garden at Geth-semane praying desperately before his own arrest. Once again, he will take Peter, James and John with him and he will be transfigured in a different way, surrendering completely into the will of His Father. Peter, James and John can’t really handle either encounter. In both places they fall asleep. Perhaps on the mountain they were tired from the journey; perhaps in the garden they were drowsy after a meal and some wine. Fear plays a part too. On the mountain they fear the full presence of God in the cloud; in the garden they fear what might come next. A long jour-ney occurs in the gospel telling between Mount Tabor and Gethsemane. Joys and tribulations will accompany the apostles as they walk with Jesus. In the end, they shall see the risen Lord. We can identify with them.

This journey of Lent is a remembering of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus and how his life and the lives of his disciples connect to and challenge our lives to make us better disciples and witnesses to our faith. Prayer and reflection are an integral part of that remembering. I encourage you to consider some spiritual reading as a part of your Lenten journey. Visit our Bookstore to see what might jump out at you. We have a number of good books by Megan McKenna who was in Reno in the late fall to present a day of reflection. Megan is a theologian and excellent storyteller. The titles of some of her books: Parables, the Arrows of God, We Live Inside a Story, Holy Families, The art and spirituality of listening, Shadows of the Trinity and Listen Here! These and many other books are available in our Bookstore located under the church. Check it out.

I noticed that many of the boxes from Operation Rice Bowl have been picked up. If you missed it last week, they are available in the baskets near the doors of the church. What I find particularly helpful in this Lenten observance is the thoughts for each day and the connection to those who struggle in poverty. The Catholic Services Appeal also continues. This is the effort in every parish of our diocese to support the minis-tries of our diocese throughout northern Nevada. This is not like our weekly collection. This appeal seeks pledges from each household to be paid either in one large sum or, for most of us, in contributions made throughout the year. Thank you to all who have pledged and are giving! We are currently at $65,949 in pledges and $33,884 received in actual contributions. If you have not yet made a pledge, please pray about doing so today.

I was very pleased with the number of people who came to pray the Stations of the Cross on our first Friday, and the soups we shared afterward were delicious. Fr. Lucio even made a yummy lentil soup. There is a beautiful spirit present among us on these evenings. Special thanks to all who helped make the Stations prayerful and the sharing plentiful! This will happen every Friday during Lent and all are welcome.

Next weekend our Confirmation students will be on retreat at the Marello Youth Retreat Center in Loomis, CA from Friday evening until Sunday. Please remember to keep them in prayer, along with Deacon Joe, Tammie and those helping with the retreat. The students will be receiving their Confirmation on May 25th. Also remember to pray for our adults in the RCIA. Last Sunday we prayed over them in the Rite of Sending at the 11:30 AM Mass and they celebrated the Rite of Election by Bishop Calvo at Saint Rose of Lima that afternoon. This year we have 8 adults in the process and they joined over 200 others from parishes in our diocese who will be celebrating the initiation sacraments at the Easter Vigil.

Finally, a couple notes of thanks. Many of you have commented on the simple beauty of the environment of our church for Lent. Oscar, Gonzalo and Cu are largely responsible for it, thank you for all you do! You may have no-ticed a little extra light on the ambo and on our music ministers, that’s thanks to Cu and his helpers as well. I also want to thank those who are on our parish Homeless Outreach Team who have consistently staffed the homeless overflow tent one night each week. From among the many congregations and communities in Reno, I am proud that the Cathedral has stepped up to take this on and I am grateful to all of the team! This outreach will conclude at the end of March.

Blessings to you all this Second Week of Lent!

Algunos de sus libros: Parables, the Arrows of God, We Live Inside a Story, Holy Families, The art and spirituality of listening, Shadows of the Trinity and Listen Here!

Contra Ti, contra Ti, he pecado. Cometí lo que aborreces.

2. Dijiste, Señor, que al más pequeño tratemos sabiendo que eres Tú. Que el pobre, el desnudo y el hambriento son seres en los que vives Tú. Sabemos, Señor, que te ofendimos negándole al hermano nuestro amor;
