What an amazing group of Jaguars
we have! Now we are also known
as GOLD RIBBON Jaguars! The
State Superintendent has proudly
announced this special award as a
result of the tremendous transfor-
mation taking place at our school.
Together our students, teachers,
staff, parents, and community have
rallied around our International
Baccalaureate school to make a
great space and place for learning.
This award acknowledges our
school as a place where students
can and will succeed in the new
Common Core environment. As a
reflective IB learner we hope that
you will take some time to consider
all the wonderful accomplishments
you have had this 2014-15 school
year, and prepare for the many
accomplishments in your future.
Congratulations to all!

In Major League Baseball, spring training is aseries of practices and exhibition gamesproceeding the start of the regular season.Spring training has always attracted fanattention, drawing crowds who travel to thewarmer climates to enjoy the weather andwatch their teams play. Spring training usual-ly coincides with spring break for many UScollege students. In some years, teams notscheduled to play on Opening Day will playspring training games on that day.Pitchers and catchers report to spring training
first because pitchers benefit from a longer training period. Team membersnormally wear their batting practice uniforms for the duration of spring train-ing and only wear their normal jerseys beginning on Opening Day.
Spring training in sites other than regular season sites first becamepopular in 1890s and by 1910 was in wide use. The Detroit Tigers were one ofthe first teams to conduct spring training camp in Arizona. The PhiladelphiaPhillies were the first of the current major league teams to train in Florida, when they spent two weeks in Jacksonville, Florida in 1889. And the ChicagoCubs used to train on Catalina Island (too bad it hasn’t helped them win)! To-day the dodgers train in Glendale, AZ. (source: Wikipedia)
Now you know a little bit about the history of baseball spring training.
Since the regular the season is open; come out and support the boys in blue.
GO DODGERS!!!!

Dear Dr. Jeff,I am having trouble balancing my friendsand my school work. I try to keep up withmy homework. But my friends are alwaystexting me; and I text them back so I won’tseem mean. Now I want to join a sport; butI’m not sure if I should. What should I do?Sincerely, Confused
Dear Confused,I think you should tell your friends that youare busy at the moment; so you won’t havetime to text them. Since they are yourfriends; they will understand. You couldalso put your phone in another room; orturn it off during homework time. If youwant to join a sport; then you should do so.Sincerely, Dr. Jeff
Dear Dr. Jeff,It’s almost summer time and I’m very excit-ed. Although I’m happy about it; I know it isgoing to be boring. I need help coming upwith things to do. Can you please help me?Sincerely, Already Bored
Dear Already Bored,
During the break you should try new things.
Maybe you can get a job helping out a
neighbor with chores or babysitting. Check
out local cities for a list of free or inexpen-
sive activities. For example, you could learn
a new sport, or visit a local pool. Also, some
libraries have summer reading programs
for teens. (Remember libraries are air con-
ditioned!) Many museums have days with
free admission, too. Finally, spend time
with your family at a restaurant or a movie.
Sincerely, Dr. Jeff
What’s Your Favorite Sport?Student Survey by Diego Albaand Bryant MoralesFor the month of April we surveyed El
Sereno Middle School students and asked
them, “What is your favorite sport?” The
number one choice is soccer because it is
easy to play; and it is competitive. Fol-
lowed in second place is basketball. The fans said that they liked it be-
cause, "Ball is life!” The third choice is foot ball because it lets you exer-
cise your muscles and improves your running skills. Also mentioned were
softball, tennis, baseball, volleyball, and none. We personally like bas-
ketball because it’s a competitive sport and it’s challenging. What do you
do to get in shape?

Cesario Estrada Chavez (Cesar Chavez) was born on March 31, 1927near Yuma, Arizona. Chavez dedicated his life to improving the treat-ment, pay and working conditions for farm workers. He knew all toowell the hardships farm workers faced. When he was young, Chavezand his family toiled in the fields as migrant farmers.
Chavez founded the National Farm Workers Association in 1962. Thisunion joined with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee inits first strike against grape growers in California in 1965. A year later, the two unions merged, and the resulting union was renamed the UnitedFarm Workers in 1972.In early 1968, Chavez called for a national boy-cott of California table grape growers. Chavez's battle with the grapegrowers for improved compensation and labor conditions would last foryears.
At the end, Chavez and his union won several victories for the workerswhen many growers signed contracts with the union. He faced morechallenges through the years from other growers and the TeamstersUnion. All the while, he continued to oversee the union and work toadvance his cause.
As a labor leader, Chavez employed nonviolent means to bring atten-
tion to the plight of farm workers. He led marches, called for boycotts
and went on several hunger strikes. He also brought the national aware-
ness to the dangers of pesticides to workers' health. His dedication to
his work earned him numerous friends and supporters, including Robert
Kennedy and Jesse Jackson. It is believed that Chavez's hunger strikes
contributed to his death: He died on April 23, 1993, in San Luis,
Arizona.

Fabergé Eggsby Ginelly Buezo & Jackie Guzman
April is the month when many people celebrate Easter.
Easter is usually associated with eggs because of egg
hunts but there are fancier eggs than the plastic ones.
Some examples are the Fabergé Eggs. Fabergé Eggs
are eggs made completely out of jewelry. The first egg
was made out of gold and it was called the "Hen Egg."
The Hen Egg was crafted by Peter Carl Fabergé for
Tsar Alexander's wife, Maria Feodoravna, a Danish prin-
cess to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their engage-
ment. There are many different types of Fabergé Eggs
created with beautiful jewels. Check out some images
On February 12th, in Culver City, El Sereno students
had a chance to see a live theatre production called
“Chavez Ravine”. The play lasted about 2 hours with 15
minutes of intermission. Mrs. Salinas’s husband, Ricardo
Salinas, was one of the stars of the show! In all, there were
4 actors who played over 50 characters. The name of their
troop is Culture Clash. It was great; and the actors were
really hilarious! The play told stories about what people
went through in the past during the construction of Dodger
Stadium. The stories were historical, sad, and hilarious.
The characters were immersed in their parts; and they had
the audience glued to the stage. I think anyone who didn’t
see this show; should definitely see it; because they would
really enjoy it. After the show, it was also a pleasure to see
Mr. Salinas, the actor. We even took a picture with him.
This play is one of a kind!
