Dear Parishioners,
“God so loved the world!” After reading the Scriptures for this Sunday, an old joke came to mind: The Good News: God sent a Messiah to save the world.
The Better News: It isn’t you!
We can breathe a sign of relief that ultimately the salvation of the world does not depend on one of us. It is, always has been, and always will be God’s initiative - “from start to finish”. Phew! Today, just sit with the certainty that in His immense mercy and incredible love, Jesus has come to shower us with God’s grace and kindness. God loves us, and there’s absolutely nothing we can do about it. Pass it on!
Peace, Sister Alice

March 11, 2018 Dear Parishioners, My thanks once again to all our parishioners for your good prayers on my behalf. The Mass card and get well cards, the notes and food sent to the rectory are all very appreciated. I pray for our parishioners every morn-ing; please continue praying for me. Special recognition to our parish staff - all of them. Aren’t we blessed. And especially acknowledge Father J.J., Fr. Tom Blind, Fr. Jose and Msgr. Kelly. We must also thank the priests from the Kelley Residence for their willing help. Yeoman service! Thank you. Wednesday, March 14th, marks the 5th anniversary of Pope Francis’ election to the papacy. Just before his election, he told his fellow cardinals: “The Church is called to come out of herself and to go to the peripheries, not only geographically but also the existential peripheries: the mys-tery of sin, of pain and injustice, of ignorance and indiffer-ence to religion, of intellectual currents and much misery”. He has visited 32 nations in these five years. Pope Francis has also challenged the “Throwaway Culture” -one that sees money and power as the ultimate values and anyone who doesn't advance money or power is disposable. He wrote: “Human life, the human person, is no longer seen by many as the primary values to be respect-ed and protected, especially if they are poor or disabled, or if they are not yet useful, like an unborn child, or no longer useful, like an elderly person.” His papacy has been marked by Mercy and by the power of the sacraments to spur conversion and nourish Catholics. Ad multos annos, Pope Francis. We need Lent, don’t we. To be a Catholic, a Christian in an increasingly secular society, wherein low-life values rule the day and have a strong influence on the young - Lent strengthens us for the challenge of living in the world without letting the world own us and squeeze us into the shape of fallen values and assumptions. Prayer, fasting and almsgiving. A good prescription for what ails our world. Have you made your pledge yet for the Cardinal’s annual appeal, Sharing God’s Blessings? If everyone gave something, according to one’s means, we can reach our parish goal and assist God’s neediest children in our area. Sincerely in Christ, Msgr. Michael Desmond

LENT AT SAINT ALOYSIUS PARISH
As we enter the season of Lent, we once again strive to live the Gospel message of feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and loving those who feel un-loved. Each week-end special items will be accepted and distributed to different agencies in the area and for those in need. Please bring the following items to church during the season of Lent.
March 10th & 11th
“Good Nutrition Begins with Breakfast” This drive is a good way to help families, the elderly, homebound and soup kitchens provide nu-tritious food. Please bring hot/cold cereal, canned fruit and fruit juices, breakfast bars, pancake mix, peanut butter and jelly.
March 17th & 18th
“Household Goods Drive” This collection will provide cleaning supplies to fami-lies, shelters and soup kitchens. Please bring laun-dry detergent, paper towels and napkins, cleaning supplies and toilet tissues.
March 11, 2018
We are once again preparing the annual tradition of honoring those couples in our Archdiocese who will be celebrating five, twenty-five and fifty years of Christian marriage in the year 2018. These anniversary liturgies will be celebrated by Cardinal Joseph Tobin in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark as follows:
April 29, 2018 3:00 PM 5th & 25th Anniversary years
May 6, 2018, 3:00 PM 50th Anniversary (All counties)
It is our desire that every couple in the Archdio-cese deserving of such recognition be present at the appropriate liturgy. The presence of a large number of couples will give favorable witness to the strength and stability of Christian marriage in today's society. Please register in person at the
rectory or by calling 973-226-0221.
