Con el tema “Una Comunidad. Una Visión. Una acción”, la Heartland Latino Leadership Conference (HLLC) se llevará a cabo este

jueves 14 y viernes 15 de noviembre en el Hotel Hilton del downtown de Omaha.

Desde su creación en 1999, HLLC ofrece valio-sas oportunidades de crecimiento personal y profesional a los latinos, impulsándolos a con-quistar cambios sustanciales en sus comunidades. Este 2013 el Consejo Ejecutivo de la HLLC 2013 está formado por la Presidenta Rosenda Ovalle (Gerente de Sucursal del First National Bank of Omaha), el Vice-Presidente Marcos Rodríguez (Gerente de Sucursal de Pinnacle Bank), la Secretaria María Mauricio-Dosseh (Gerente de Servicio Técnico de Streck Inc.), y el Tes-orero Daniel Padilla (First National Bank of Omaha).

Además de regirse por un Consejo Asesor Empre-sarial, en la organización de la HLLC también par-ticipan como Directores, Sylvia Almanza (State Farm), Lisa Fisher (Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska), Mi-chael Fierro (TD Ameritrade), Lili Hughes (Mutual of Omaha), Orlando Pineda (First National Bank), Pa-tricia Rodríguez Beer (ConAgra Foods, Inc.), Valerie Thompson (University of Nebraska-Omaha), María Valentín (ConAgra), José Villegas (Methodist College) y Brandon Will (Aerotek).

María Mauricio-Dosseh quien además colabora como Co-presidente del Comité de Mercadeo explicó que a diferencia de años anteriores, la HLLC 2013 iniciará su programa de actividades con un evento es-pecialmente diseñado para los jóvenes: “El jueves 14 tendremos el Youth Empowerment Summit (Cumbre de Empoderamiento Juvenil, YES por sus siglas en in-glés), dirigido específicamente a estudiantes de nivel secundaria. Por lo que hemos invitado a las escuelas locales y estatales para que manden a sus estudiantes quienes tendrán la oportunidad de escuchar a los pan-elistas y saldrán inspirados y motivados a alcanzar cual-quiera que sean sus metas futuras”.

YES iniciará a las 8:30am y terminará a las 2pm, ofreciendo dos talleres por la mañana y dos al me-diodía enfocados en compartir información sobre la ayuda financiera disponible para asistir a la universi-dad y las herramientas de liderazgo para tener éxito en los estudios superiores. Durante el desayuno y el alm-uerzo, los estudiantes escucharán a los oradores Pearl Arredondo, una de las maestras fundadoras del San Fernando Institute for Applied Media; y a Jimmy Ca-brera de la National Speakers Association.

Al finalizar YES, todos los participantes están in-vitados a tomar parte en la Recepción de Bienvenida de 5:30 a 8pm. Y al día siguiente, el viernes 15, las actividades empezarán a las 7:30am con el registro de los asistentes y la apertura de la exhibición de las empresas participantes.

“Una modificación que hicimos este año - aclaró María Mauricio-Dosseh -, es que les pedimos a las or-ganizaciones que además de mostrar sus productos, también trajeran a su mesa a una persona de Recursos

El desayuno de la HLLC iniciará a las 8am present-ación del Dr. Juan Andrade, Presidente del United States Hispanic Leadership Institute; continuando con una pre-sentación de los niños de Marrs Middle School.

A lo largo de la Conferencia se brindarán 3 ciclos de 4 diferentes talleres cada uno, que incluirán la par-ticipación de personalidades como Pearl Arredondo, Jon Pearson, Shayla Rivera, Carlos Ojeda Jr., Dr. Bev-erly Kracher, Joaquín Zihuatanejo, Dr. Sue Schlich-temeier-Nutzman, April Hernandez-Castillo, Lamarr Womble y Erika Ramírez.

Concluyendo la primer sesión de talleres, se dará paso al Almuerzo para Becarios, en el que se otor-garán16 becas con valor de $1,000 cada una. Este

año los estudiantes de secundaria ganadores de este importante apoyo económico son: Noemí Arias, Icel Davila, Yahaira González, Dayana López, Misael López, Stacy Márquez, Michael Peña, Jonathan Párez-Ramírez, Selena Stack, Melanie Vélez, y Verónica Villalobos. Por su parte, los universitarios becados son: Mitzi Infante Magaña, Freddy Orellana, Víctor Romero, Valerie Tufano y Selma De Anda.

“Desde el 2012 la Conferencia ha otorgado un to-tal de 16 becas - comentó Rosenda Ovalle, Presidenta de la HLLC -, y este 2013 estamos muy agradecidos con el apoyo que nos dió MYLPA (Metro Young La-tinos Professional Association) para continuar con nuestra meta”.

Mientras los jóvenes disfrutan del reconocimiento a su esfuerzo y dedicación, subirá al podio el orador Richard Montañez, exitoso ejecutivo de la empresa PepsiCo en Norteamérica.

“La historia de este señor es muy interesante - dijo Rosenda Ovalle durante su participación en el pro-grama de televisión Sabor a Omaha, patrocinado por El Perico -, porque él es de origen mexicano y se inició en la compañía limpiando pero logró llegar muy alto porque inventó los Cheetos que todos hemos comido, con picante (refiriéndose a la popular línea de produc-tos Flamin’ Hot de Frito-Lay)”.

Otra de las diferencias en la HLLC este 2013, es que no habrá la cena de gala y el baile con lo que se clausuraba en evento en años anteriores: “Siempre nos basamos en los comentarios y sugerencias de los asistentes, y en las encuestas nos dimos cuenta que muchas personas nos indicaban que el programa se les hacía un poco largo y que al final estaban tan cansados que por ejemplo, ya no tenían por energía para ir a cambiarse y asistir a la cena formal”.

Por ello, inmediatamente después del último ciclo de talleres, HLLC terminará su programa con la Re-cepción de Premios al Liderazgo que esta vez otor-gará el reconocimiento en Artes y Humanidades al coreógrafo mexicano Héctor Moreno, mientras que en el área de Salud será para el Dr. Jorge Sotolongo. Fiorella Vitolo recibirá el mismo premio en Educación y el de Liderazgo Juvenil se lo llevará María Reyes. El galardón al Patrocinio Latino del Año se le entregará a Dick Schenck, Gerente de Desarrollo Comunitario de Wells Fargo; y Diva Mejías de Liberty Taxes será distinguida en Negocios. Por último, el de la categoría de Gobierno lo obtendrá Justice for Our Neighbors.

HLLC 2013 culminará con la participación de Víc-tor Antonio de Sellinger Group, orador motivacional que compartirá sus experiencias desde su infancia en un barrio pobre en Chicago, hasta su triunfo en el mundo de las ventas.

“Básicamente la Conferencia continuará con su misión de fomentar la educación - añadió María Mauricio-Dosseh -, porque estamos convencidos de que ésa es la única manera de llegar más alto. No im-porta si lo tuyo es abrir un pequeño negocio, debes comenzar por prepararte para ello. Este evento nos permite ver a otros líderes exitosos y aprender sobre cómo han llegado al lugar donde están. De ahí que nuestros talleres fueron pensados para tocar temas como el desarrollo corporativo, personal, financiero y hasta de ética en los negocios”.

HLLC tiene el Patrocinio de Diamante de Cox, Mutual of Omaha, Wells Fargo y ConAgra, “pero igualmente le hemos dado la oportunidad a micro-empresas de adquirir nuestros paquetes como patro-cinadores, a costos más bajos”.

With a theme of “One Community, One Vi-sion, One Action,” the Heartland Latino Leadership Conference (HLLC) will take

place on the 14th and 15h of November at the Hilton Hotel in downtown Omaha.

Ever since it was created in 1999, the HLLC offers valuable opportunities for the personal and professional growth of Latinos, encouraging them to contribute to substantial changes in their communities.

This year, the Executive Board for HLLC 2013 consists of President Rosenda Ovalle (Branch Manager for First National Bank of Omaha), Vice president Marcos Rodri-guez (Branch Manager of Pinnacle Bank), Secretary Ma-ria Mauricio-Dosseh (Manager of Technical Services at Streck Inc.), and Treasurer Daniel Padilla (First National Bank of Omaha). There’s also a Business Advisory Coun-cil, and HLLC also has the participation of Sylvia Alman-za (State Farm), Lisa Fisher (Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska), Michael Fierro (TD Ameritrade), Lili Hughes (Mutual of Omaha), Orlando Pineda (First National Bank), Patricia Rodriguez Beer (ConAgra Foods, Inc.), Valerie Thompson (University of Nebraska-Omaha), Maria Valentin (Con Agra), Jose Villegas (Methodist College) and Brandon Will (Aerotek).

Maria Mauricio-Dosseh, who is also Co-chair of the Marketing Committee, explained that, unlike previous years, HLLC 2013 will start its activities with a special event designed for young people: “On Thursday, No-vember 14, we will have the Youth Empowerment Sum-mit (YES), aimed specifically at high school students. Because of this, we’ve invited Local and State schools so they can send their students, because that way they can have the opportunity to listen to our panelist and be in-spired and motivated to reach their goals.”

YES will start at 8:30 a.m. and run until 2 p.m., of-fering two workshops in the morning and two more at noon focused on sharing information about financial aid available for young people to go to College, as well as on the leadership tools to succeed in higher educa-tion. During breakfast and lunch, students will get to hear Pearl Arredondo, one of the founding teachers of the San Fernando Institute for Applied Media, and Jimmy Cabrera of the National Speakers Association. Once YES is over, all participants are invited to the Welcome Reception from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

On November 15, activities will start at 7:30am so that those in attendance can register and visit the exhibits from participating businesses.

“A change we made for this year – said Maria Mauri-cio-Dosseh – is that we asked the companies to not only showcase their products but to also bring someone from the Human Resources department for their company, in order to recruit potential candidates. That way those in attendance will not only get to know more about these companies, they will have the opportunity of learning about their career and employment options.” The break-fast at the HLLC will start at 8 a.m. with a presentation by Dr. Juan Andrade, President of the United States His-panic Leadership Institute; afterwards, there will be a presentation from the children of Marrs Middle School.

During the conference, there will be 3 cycles with 4 different workshops each, which will include the partici-pation of Pearl Arredondo, Jon Pearson, Shayla Rivera, Carlos Ojeda Jr., Dr. Beverly Kracher, Joaquin Zihuatane-jo, Dr. Sue Schlichtemeier-Nutzman, April Hernandez-Castillo, Lamarr Womble and Erika Ramirez.

After the first session for the workshops, the Schol-arships Luncheon will be in full swing, and 16 scholar-ships will be granted for $1,000 each. This year the high

school students that will receive this support are Noemi Arias, Icel Davila, Yahaira Gonzalez, Dayana Lopez, Misael Lopez, Stacy Marquez, Michael Peña, Jonathan Perez-Ramirez, Selena Stack, Melanie Velez, y Veronica Villalobos. The College students that will receive a schol-arship are Mitzi Infante Magaña, Freddy Orellana, Victor Romero, Valerie Tufano and Selma De Anda.

“Since 2012, the Conference has granted a total of 16 scholarships – said Rosenda Ovalle, President of the HLLC – and in 2013 we are thankful for the support of the MYLPA (Metro Young Latinos Professional Associa-tion) to continue working on this.”

Once the young enjoy being recognized for their ef-fort and dedication, Richard Montañez, successful execu-tive at PepsiCo, will take the stage.

“His story is very important - said Rosenda Ovalle during her participation in TV show Sabor a Omaha, sponsored by El Perico – because he is of Mexican ori-gin and started working in the company as part of the cleaning crew, but he managed to get to a high position because he invented spicy Cheetos (that is, the popular Flamin’ Hot product line from Frito-Lay).”

Another difference for the HLLC in 2013 is that there will not be a gala dinner and ball as was the case for previ-ous years: “We always take into consideration the sugges-tion and comments of those in attendance, and the polls made us realize that a lot of people were saying that the programme was a bit long and that by the end everyone was tired and, therefore, didn’t have the energy to go and change for the formal dinner.”

Because of this, and right after the last cycle of work-shops, the HLLC will complete its programme with the Leadership Award Reception that will present the Arts and Humanities award to Mexican choreographer Hec-tor Moreno while, in the Health sector, the award will

go to Dr. Jorge Sotolongo. Fiorella Vitolo will receive the award for Education, and the Youth Award will be be-stowed upon Maria Reyes. The Latino Partner of the Year Award will be presented to Dick Schenck, Community Development Manager for Wells Fargo; and Diva Mejias, from Liberty Taxes, will receive the Business Award. The last category is Government, and it will go to Justice for Our Neighbors.

HLLC 2013 will end with the participation of Victor Antonio from the Sellinger Group, a motivational speaker who will share his experiences from growing up in a poor neighborhood in Chicago to finding success in sales.

“The Conference will carry on with its mission to pro-mote education – said Maria Mauricio-Dosseh – because we are convinced it is the only way to aim higher in life. It doesn’t matter if you want to start a small business, you must prepare for it. This event allows us to see other suc-cessful leaders and learn how they got there. From there, our workshops have been created to target topics such as corporate, personal and financial development, as well as ethics in business.”

HLLC is supported by Cox, Mutual of Omaha, Wells Fargo and ConAgra as Diamond Level Sponsors, “but we also give an opportunity to micro-businesses so they can get one of our sponsor packages at a lower cost.”

“We expand our horizons to lure people from Ne-braska, Kansas and Iowa, and it is interesting to learn that there are now more Latinas involved, since every day more and more of them are becoming business owners,” said Maria Mauricio-Dosseh who added, “do not miss this Conference because we have gathered local leaders and employers to talk about the challenges and opportu-nities at hand so that in the end we can find a way to help each other, and it doesn’t matter if you are or aren’t Latino because this event is for everyone.”

Madre e hija se encuentran en la cocina. Sobre la mesa un café con leche espera a la niña antes de salir a la escuela. El

tiempo se detiene mientras la chiquilla se sienta en el regazo de su madre quien amorosamente le dice: “Cuéntame tus sueños”.

“Mi madre no se refería a mis ambiciones, sino a lo que había soñado la noche anterior. Ella siempre me pedía estar alerta, porque lo que había pasando en mi sueño se podía reflejar en mi vida”, comentó la Dra. Theresa Barron-McKeagney.

Muchos de los sueños de la Dra. Barron-McKeagney han sido bellas metáforas que ella ha sabido interpretar y aplicar tanto en su vida personal como profesional: “Basándome en ésa intuición que mi madre me pedía que siguiera y también en ésa espiritualidad que ella me inculcó, en tener confianza en lo que es intangible”.

Desde el 14 de octubre, la Dra. Barron-McKeagney ocupa oficialmente el puesto de Decana Asociada de la Facultad de Asuntos Públicos y Servicio a la Comunidad (CPACS, por sus siglas en inglés), de la Universidad de Nebraska en Omaha (UNO).

“Humildemente me siento muy honrada de haber sido seleccionada para esta posición porque creo que en el futuro muchas personas podrán darse cuenta de qué tan lejos podemos llegar con nuestras ambicio-nes. Aunque para ser honesta, las mías nunca fueron llegar hasta este lugar”.

Desde el 2004, la Dra. Barron-McKeagney laboró como Directora de la Facultad de Trabajo Social de UNO (Grace Abbott School of Social Work): “Estuve diez años en ése empleo donde me sentía muy feliz, pero debo reconocer que mi primera pasión es la enseñanza y por eso siento que es un poco difícil el hecho de que ahora estaré ocupando un puesto administrativo”.

Hija de padres inmigrantes mexicanos, Barron-McK-eagney es la más joven de 11 hermanos: “Tuve la fortuna de recibir mucho amor de mis padres y de escuchar a mi madre hablar todo el tiempo del valor de la educación. Para ella lo más importante era siempre mostrar respeto a los maestros. Yo crecí sintiendo que la escuela estaba ahí para mi, para que yo tomara ventaja de ella en todos sentidos. Así que estaba en música, en drama y deportes.

Todo me representaba una gran oportunidad, gracias al inmenso apoyo de mi familia con el que cuento hasta el día de hoy. Me formé como una persona muy optimista, aunque no me cuesta trabajo levantar la voz cuando con-sidero que algo es incorrecto o injusto”.

La Dra. Barron-McKeagney anhelaba con estudiar Pisquiatría cuando cursaba el séptimo grado, pero final-mente ingresó a la Universidad de Iowa para estudiar Psi-cología: “Pero no me sentía del todo satisfecha. Veía a esta disciplina un poco menos participativa, alejada. Así que cuando uno de mis consejeros me habló de la Licencia-tura en Trabajo Social, me encantó la idea de cambiar mis estudios para estar más cerca de mi comunidad”.

La oportunidad de colaborar con el Chicano Aware-ness Center (hoy conocido como Latino Center of the Midlands) la impulsó a continuar su preparación, graduándose de UNO en 1986 con una Maestría en Tra-bajo Social. Años después en 1989, Barron-McKeagney se inició en UNO como instructora adjunta, al tiempo que compaginó sus estudios de doctorado.

“En mis inicios, cuando comencé a dar instrucción en Trabajo Social y Bienestar Social, yo no tenía idea de cómo dar clases. Recuerdo que entré al salón y vi a los estudiantes sentados en el piso porque no teníamos su-ficientes sillas y eso me emocionó muchísimo. El estar enfrente de la clase y simplemente ser yo misma con los estudiantes, me permitió ganarme su respeto. Yo siem-pre les dije que como latina, en mi cultura el respeto a los demás era primordial. En esos años yo fuí aprendiendo de la mano de mis alumnos y lo más hermoso para mi fue cuando veía esa luz en el rostro de mis estudiantes después de que aprendían algo, ¡era como ver nacer a uno de tus hijos!. Hablarles de temas como racismo y opresión es vital en nuestra disciplina porque como tra-bajadores sociales ellos saldrán a la calle a dar lo mejor de sí para eliminar todo eso en nuestra sociedad, y es necesario que los estudiantes comprendan significados como el de la opresión, porque si no, corren el riesgo de convertirse ellos mismos en los opresores”.

Con una biografía impresionante, la Dra. Barron-McKeagney conserva con mucho cariño los momentos que vivió gracias al proyecto Aguante: “Como coordi-nadora de este programa me identifiqué mucho con los chicos de las escuelas Liberty y Field Club, en donde les prestamos apoyo como mentores para darles un con-sejo académico, pero sobre todo, para hacerles saber que tenían a alguien que se preocupaba por ellos. Eran

niños de bajos recursos, de 10 y 11 años que ya sufrían de depresión y ataques de ansiedad y pánico. Algo muy triste. A mi los niños siempre me hacen sonreír con su inocencia, porque a pesar de encontrarse en situaciones de riesgo, te reciben cálidamente porque te ven como la persona que puede darles amor y protección. El haber ll-evado el Trabajo Social a las Escuelas Públicas de Omaha realmente hizo la diferencia en sus vidas y en el sistema, así que mi esperanza es llegar a ver a estos chicos cur-sando alguna carrera en la universidad. Por actividades como esta es que me siento muy conectada con mi comu-nidad latina y reconozco que hay muchas personas que me observan en el lugar en donde ahora me encuentro y que de la misma manera hay muchas más que me han ayudado a ser lo que soy”.

Otro momento imborrable es el resultado de haber sido profesora en Our Lady of the Lake University (Wor-den School of Social Service) en San Antonio: “Recuerdo que los estudiantes se asombraron de verme detrás del podio porque me decían que no estaban acostumbrados a ver a una persona latina en ese nivel. Eso me dió la pauta para conducir investigaciones sobre la forma en la que los estudiantes te perciben cuando eres latina”.

Actualmente como Decana Asociada de CPACS su prioridad será: “Que los estudiantes se sientan bien-venidos y que en la facultad los profesores se preparen para atender a una comunidad estudiantil diversa con nuevas necesidades”.

Barron-McKeagney ha entrado en contacto con otras casas de estudios en países europeos para conocer la realidad de los inmigrantes en ese continente: “La gran ventaja de tener este empleo es que me siento como en familia, porque trabajar al lado de John (Dr. John Bartle, decano de CPACS) es maravilloso porque puedes com-partir tus ideas, decir lo que piensas, ser propositiva en medio de un ambiente cordial y respetuoso”.

A su vez el Dr. Bartle añadió: “Hace dos años cuando se abrió el puesto de Decano, mi primer pensamiento fue para Theresa como la persona ideal para ocuparlo. Yo estaba como Director de la Facultad de Administración Pública y ella en la de Servicio Social, donde se encon-traba muy contenta. Aunque ella no se postuló, le deje saber que contaba con mi voto, por eso ahora que se abrió el puesto de Decana Asociada, ella desde el principio fue la opción obvia para ocupar el lugar. Juntos podremos se-guir construyendo lo que hace a esta facultad algo único y distintivo a nivel nacional”.

Mother and daughter are in the kitchen. A coffee with milk sits at the table for the little one before she leaves to school. Time

stops while the girl sits in her mother’s lap, and she says to her daughter “tell me about your dreams.”

“My mother was not asking me about my goals for life, but about what I had dreamt the previous night. She always said I should be alert because what hap-pened in my dream could be reflected in my life,” said Dr. Theresa Barron-McKeagney.

Many of Dr. Barron-McKeagney’s dreams have been beautiful metaphors she has been able to inter-pret and apply to her personal and professional life: “Based on that intuition from my mother, asking me to go on, and also because of the spirituality she passed on to me, to trust the intangible.”

From October 14 and on, Dr. Barron-McKeagney has been the Associate Dean for the College of Public Affairs and Community Service (CPACS), of the Uni-versity of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO).

“I am humbly honored for being selected for this be-cause I believe that soon people will be able to realize how far we can take our goals and ambitions. Although, to be honest, mine were never aiming to secure this job.”

Since 2004, Dr. Barron-McKeagney worked as Direc-tor for the Grace Abbott School of Social Work at UNO: “I was there for ten years in a job where I was happy, but I have to recognize that my first love has always been

teaching and that’s why I feel it will be a little hard on me to be in an administrative role.”

Dr. Barron-McKeagney’s parents are Mexican Im-migrants, and she’s the youngest of 11 siblings: “I was lucky to receive a lot of love from my parents and to lis-ten to my mother about the value of education. For her, one of the most important things to do was to respect teachers. I grew-up feeling that school was there for me to take advantage of everything it offered. I was in Mu-sic classes, in the Drama club and in Sports. Everything was a great opportunity for me thanks to the huge sup-port from my family, which still goes on up to this day. I’ve always been a very optimistic person, although I don’t have any trouble raising my voice when I think something is unfair or incorrect.”

Dr. Barron-McKeagney wanted to study Psychology when she was in 7th grade, and she eventually enrolled in the University of Iowa to study Psychology: “But I wasn’t feeling fulfilled. I saw this profession as something where you don’t participate much and are distant from it all. When one of my counselors mentioned the availability of a Bachelor of Social Work degree, I loved the idea of switching to a new career, to be closer to my community.” The opportunity of working together with the Chicano Awareness Center (now known as the Latino Center of the Midlands) motivated her to continue working hard on her studies, and she graduated UNO in 1986 with a Degree - Master of Social Work. In 1989, Barron-McK-eagney started to work at UNO as an assistant teacher while she carried on working on her PhD.

“When I first started teaching Social Work and Wel-fare, I had no idea of how I would proceed. I remember entering the classroom and seeing students sitting on

the floor because there weren’t enough chairs for them and that thrilled me. Being in front of the class and just being myself around my students allowed me to earn their respect. I always told them that as a Latina, in my culture respect is essential. All of those years helped me learn along with my students, and the most beautiful thing for me was seeing their faces light-up when they learned something. It was like experiencing one of your kids being born! I talked to them about racism and op-pression because as social workers, they will go out to the streets trying to give it their best to try and eradicate these from our society, and students must understand what oppression really is because if they don’t, they run the risk of becoming oppressors.”

With an amazing life story, Dr. Barron-McKeagney remembers the moments she experienced thanks to the Aguante Project: “As coordinator for this program, I definitely related to the kids at Liberty and at Field Club, where we supported them as mentors with advice about their education and, above all, to let them know there was someone that cared for them. They were low income kids, between 10 and 11 years of age, who suf-fered from depression, and from anxiety and panic at-tacks. A very sad situation. The kids did make me smile with their innocence because, even though they found themselves in high-risk situations, they warmly wel-comed us because they saw us as the person who can provide them with love and protection. Bringing Social Work to the Public Schools of Omaha truly made a dif-ference in their lives and in the system, so I hope to see these kids one day working their way through college. Because of activities such as this, I feel very connected to the Latino community, and I acknowledge there are

a lot of people watching me at this point in my life, and I know there are many people who have shaped me and helped me be the person I am.”

Another unforgettable moment comes from having been a teacher at Our Lady of the Lake University (Wor-den School of Social Service) in San Antonio: “I remem-ber that the students were amazed to see me behind the podium because they were not used to seeing a Latina at that level. That lead the way for me to conduct some research about how students perceive Latinos.”

As Associate Dean for CPACS, her priority will be: “That students feel welcomed and that the teachers are ready to look after a diverse student community with new needs.”

Barron-McKeagney has contacted other schools in European countries to be able to know the reality of immigrants in the continent: “The biggest advantage of having his job is that I feel at home because work-ing side-by-side with John (Dr. John Bartle, Dean of CPACS) is wonderful since I am able to share my ideas and what is on my mind, working in a respectful and friendly environment.”

Dr. Bartle said: “Two years ago when the spot for Dean was available I first thought of Theresa as the ideal person to take the job. Back then I was the Director for the Fac-ulty of Public Management, and she was at Social Work, where she was very happy. Even though she didn’t run for the open position, I let her know she had my vote which is why, when there was an opening for Associate Dean, she was the obvious choice for the job. Together, we will continue to work on everything that distinguishes this faculty as a unique entity in the US.”

Con gracia y soltura, Alicia Sancho Scherich re-aliza una posición de Tai Chi mientras respira profundamente y habla sobre la importancia de

tomar conciencia de nuestro propio cuerpo. Estamos en uno de los salones de la Facultad

de Artes Plásticas de la Universidad de Creighton, donde Scherich trabaja en su última pintura: “Es una obra basada en la medicina china y la figura principal es una mujer que refleja toda la concen-tración y fuerza de la que es capaz. Con un enorme sentido de disciplina y los pies bien plantados, está lista para sobrevivir y sobresalir en un mundo lleno de ruido y contaminación”.

Nacida en Madrid, España, la artista llegó con su familia a Estados Unidos en los años sesentas, tray-endo consigo una formación en Diseño de Moda y Diseño de Muñecas y Juguetes: “Al llegar primero tuve que aprender bien inglés y luego me matriculé en diferentes lugares para tomar todo tipo de clases como diseño gráfico, grabado, cerámica y princi-palmente pintura”.

Recordando las enseñanzas de su padre el de-stacado pintor español Mariano Sancho (quién se casó con la cantante de ópera Asunción Medina, madre de la entrevistada), Scherich explica: “Papá era profesor de pintura y un artista muy reconocido

en su época que pensaba que para poder pintar, ¡lo primero es saber dibujar!”.

Una día visitando una galería, Scherich descu-brió el trabajo del pintor John Thein, “y me quedé maravillada porque nunca había visto una acuarelas tan hermosas de donde salieran tanto figuras realis-tas como abstractas”. Así que se acercó a Creighton para convertirse en discípula del reconocido mae-stro desde finales de los años ochentas.

Bajo su tutela, Scherich pintó un mural llamado “Paz en la Tierra”, formado por 16 paneles (73 X 48 pulgadas cada uno), una tarea que le llevó más de 10 años completar y que finalmente se exhibió en el año 2000 en el Centro para las Artes de Creighton: “Deseaba crear una pieza que pudiera llevarse por todo el mundo mostrándole al hombre el por qué de tanta barbarie. Las pinturas hechas al óleo, es-tán agrupadas de cuatro en cuatro; los primeros 4 paneles reflejan las causas de la guerra y el segundo grupo expone la terrible devastación causada por el hombre en la naturaleza y los animales. Lejos de la destrucción, el tercer y cuarto grupo nos hablan de la creación y vemos al hombre sacando lo mejor de sí mediante el arte, la ciencia y la tecnología”.

Uno de los paneles titulado “Amor Universal” e inspirado en la Madre Teresa de Calcuta, conmueve

hasta las lágrimas a la artista: “Me eduqué con mon-jas, y jamás he visto un amor tan grande como el que ella sentía por las criaturitas”.

La Asociación Nacional para Latinos Constructores de la Comunidad (NALCAB) le otorgó a la organización no lucrativa una beca completa que permitirá que el personal MLCDC asista al entrenamiento Uso-Mixto Finanzas Bienes Raíces en San Antonio, Texas. El entrenamiento, que tendrá lugar a finales de octubre, se centrará en la revitalización de bienes raíces comerciales, el proceso de financiamiento de bienes raíces y la rehabilitación histórica, entre otros temas.

Discurso del PresidenteDurante un discurso semanal emitido el 19 de

The National Association for Latino Community Asset Builders (NALCAB) awarded the nonprofit a full scholarship that will allow MLCDC staff to attend the Mixed-Use Real Estate Finance training in San Antonio, Texas. The training, which will take part in late October, will focus on commercial real estate revitalization, the real estate financing process and historic rehabilitation among other topics.

Presidential Address

During a weekly address delivered on October 19, President Obama focused on the end of the government shutdown and what the United States needs to do in order to move forward. “Democrats and responsible Republicans came together, the government was reopened, and the threat of default was removed from our economy,” explained Obama. The President added that since the fiscal crisis was averted, it is time for Washington to focus on growing the economy, create jobs and prepare for the long haul. According to Obama, there are three areas where he believes Democrats and Republicans can work together right away. “First, we should sit down and pursue a balanced approach to a responsible budget,” said Obama. “Second, we should finish the job of fixing our broken immigration system,” and “third, we should pass a farm bill.” Obama concluded that there is no good reasons why the U.S government can’t govern responsibly and hopes both Democrats and Republicans will work together to avoid another crisis. “Those of us who have the privilege to serve this country have an obligation to do our job the best we can,” affirmed a hopeful Obama.

Faculty of the University of Creighton where Sche-rich is working on her latest piece: “It is a painting based on Chinese medicine and the main figure is a woman that reflects all the concentration and strength she is capable of. With a huge sense of discipline and her feet firmly set on the ground, she is ready to survive and stand out in a world full of noise and pollution.”

Born in Madrid, Spain, the artist arrived in the United States with her family during the 70s, with an education on Fashion Design and Dolls and Toys Design: “When I first got here I had to learn English and then I enrolled in all sorts of classes, such as graphic design, engraving, ceramic work and, of course, painting.”

Remembering the lessons learned from her fa-ther, the renowned Spanish painter Mariano San-cho (who married opera singer Asuncion Medica, mother of the interviewee), Scherich explains: “Dad taught painting and was a renowned artist during

his time and he thought that in order to be able to paint, you first needed to know how to draw!”

One day while visiting a gallery, Scherich dis-covered the work of painter John Thein, “and I was in awe because I had never seen such beauti-ful watercolors from which realistic and abstract figures could emerge.” At the end of the 80s, she approached Creighton to become an understudy for the famous master.

Under his watch, Scherich painted a mural called “Paz en la Tierra” (Peace on Earth), made from 16 boards (of 73 X 48 in each), a work that took over 10 years to complete and which was finally placed in an exhibition in the year 2000 at the Center for the Arts in Creighton: “I wanted to create a piece that could be taken around the world, to show peo-ple the ‘why?’ of so much brutality. Oil paintings are grouped four at a time; the first 4 boards reflect the causes for war and the second group exposes the terrible devastation caused by man over nature and its animals. Far from destruction, the third and fourth groups tell us about creation, and we see man presenting the best it has to offer with art, sci-ence and technology.”

One of the pieces, titled “Amor Universal” (Uni-versal Love) and inspired by Mother Teresa of Cal-

cutta, moves the artists to tears: “I was educated by nuns and I have never seen a love bigger than the one they have for all children.”

Another magnificent piece is dedicated to Pro-fessor Thein, her mentor, and can be admired at the Office of Multicultural Affairs in Creighton, where we first discovered Scherich’s talent thanks to the kindness of Ricardo Ariza, its Director.

Next to it is another piece from Scherich that honors China, showing her admiration for char-acters such as Buda and Confucius: “I’m in love with that country and its greatness which is tied to their intellect.”

Scherich has showcased her talent at the Hillm-ers Gallery at the College of Saint Mary, at Mutual of Omaha, at the Air Force and at Gallery 76.

This charismatic woman can use oil and pastel paints, pencil, carbon or chalk to develop her elab-orate creations, and many of them are now portraits that are part of private collections.
