Pasadena City Hall was built in 1927 to inspire a city with beauty, boldness and

vision. It is an important part of this community’s rich architectural heritage. It is one

of the finest examples of the California Mediterranean style. Designed by Bakewell

and Brown in San Francisco, the 80 year old Pasadena City Hall is one of the mostdistinctive public buildings in the United States and is listed on the

National Register of Historic Places. One of the primary reasons for the seismic

retrofit of Pasadena City Hall was that studies in the 1990s indicated that major

earthquakes in the future could destroy several parts of the building completely

and result in loss of life. In 2003, the City Council approved a plan for the seismicretrofit and historic restoration. Seismic retrofit of the building included the

installation of structural base isolators that now allow the

building to withstand future earthquake activity. Restoration

activities were undertaken to preserve many of the historic

architectural elements of City Hall.

C/S @ de Young MuseumA major consideration of the de Young project was that theexpansion joint covers must be “virtually invisible” within the museum’s weathered copper skin. Architects Fong & Chan,SF; and Herzog & de Meuron specified CS’ XLS cover system knowing it could be seamlessly incorporated into the facade’scopper panel frame. The 24" XLS covers are designed to release from the wall to provide full seismic movement.

How the Gyrometric Cover Works

Full Closed (During Compression) During an event in the contraction or compression mode the cab slides fully into the adjoining structure.

Lateral Shear The cab is attached to the fixed structure by means of a friction-freesliding track assembly to allow full lateral shear between buildings.

Full Open (During Tension) During an event in the expansionor tension mode the cab slides fully out.

This system allows full access between base isolated and

fixed structures. It is perfect for where egress is necessary

during an earthquake. Because base isolated structures are

free to move in any horizontal direction, they create

distinct challenges for the design of the seismic joint covers.

The C/S solution for base isolated structures is an integrated

assembly approach with floor, wall and ceiling covers connected

and moving in unison. This Gyrometric System, or “cab

assembly,” provides full movement of up to 100% in

any horizontal direction. The floor cover may be used

independently of the wall and ceiling covers for lineal

applications where lateral shear is a problem

(specify model XYZ).

When an expansion or seismic joint passes through afire-rated structure it is necessary to maintain the fire

integrity of that structure. Maintaining the integrity of a

2" wide joint is quite simple; however, a joint designed

for seismic movement up to 24 inches becomes a more

difficult proposition. In general, the wider the joint, the more complex the fire barrier. Most

manufacturers use the same barrier design for all joint

sizes. C/S has simplified our fire barrier for small joint

sizes for easy installation and to maximize cost

effectiveness (see Reflex). Floor applications are relatively simple configurations regardless of joint size

unless lateral shear is required. Walls, on the other hand,

can be more complex. All C/S fire barriers require only

one barrier in the wall and require that the studs be

wrapped with drywall to maintain full integrity.

(Includes shaft walls) Variations in wall configurationsand finishes, as well as transitions between adjacent fire barriers, make it critical to consult the manufacturer

concerning typical applications. C/S has a technical

expert available to assist you in detailing these

applications. Since 1996 building codes require firebarriers to limit the passing of heat and flame for 2, 3

and sometimes 4 hours, as well as accommodating the

dynamic movement for which the joint was designed.

ASTM E 1966 and UL 2079 specify criteria for “cycling”

a fire barrier 500 times prior to fire testing. C/S tests

all of its fire barriers at Underwriters Laboratories

(UL) because they represent the most stringent

and universally accepted testing authority.

“LS” designation indicates a special adaptation of the floor fire barrier to accommodate Lateral Shear movement.FB-97 wall fire barriers naturally provide lateral shear movement.

Reflex® 1"- 4" Stainless steel foil drape with block insulation affords maximum economy in materialand installation. Wall barriers limited to 1” - 4” joints and require no stainless foil.
