IV. Reports

A. District Superintendent

Pastors, Delegates and friends of the Assembly: Our Lord’s Grace and peace..

It is my preveledge to present my fifth annual report as District Superintendent of the Church of

the Nazarene here in Sao Tome e Principe.

We are a district in formation. This Assembly will have the opportunity to approve our first

pastors to be ordained Elders here in our Church. We have four pastors who are qualified this

year for consideration and one more who will qualify next year. We also have three new local

ministers who are starting their ministries under the leadership of their local pastors. Two are in

the Porto Alegre Church (Yurgue and Humberto, please stand up) and one is in the Sao Tome

Central church (Isaias, please stand up). They represent the beginnings of our next generation of

pastors in our district. We need more pastoral students.

My personal goal for the next year is to see one of our then five ordained Elders appointed as our

next District Superintendent. I believe this is your goal as as well.

For this to take place, we need to grow through each of our churches with more new brothers and

sisters in Christ. We need to also plant four more congregations, especially in the Capital City.

We need more persons who will respond to God by saying “Yes Lord, I want to serve you” and

be trained as pastors and other workers for our Lord.

God is calling all of us to talk with others about Jesus, to hear what they have in their hearts and

to show them that our Lord wants them to turn to Him for help.

Our families, friends and neighbors should know about God’s love and forgiveness through all of

us.

Our district has made some progress this past year in some areas and in others we are behind

where we should be. The important thng here is that we are working with God.

God will speak to us when we are ready to listen and do His will.

Our retreats

We have good pastors who are want to serve God. Our Pastors and Wives Retreat took plave this

year in Porto Alegre (16-18 July) with Rev Jose Delgado whjo was visiting us form the United

States. Our pastors re-committed themselves to follow God’ scalling and returned to their

churches with more of God’s grace

9

Page 12: Eighth Annual Assembly Journal of the Sao Tome & …nazarene.org/sites/default/files/doclib/dj2014/Sao Tome and... · Eighth Annual Assembly Journal of the Sao Tome & Príncipe District

We also had more movement among the women of our churches. They continued with their

annual retreat which took plave in Ribeira Peixe from the 9th through 11th of August. My wife ,

Rev. Martha Patalano, was their speaker and their theme was “Making a difference”. I was very

pleased to discover htat we have two congregatinos that have women ministgry meetings twice a

week.

The NYI continued with their seminars as well as their annual retreat which was held in Porto

Alegre on 23-26 August. Their speakers were Eduardo Ramos and my wife, Martha Patalano.

God blessed this special time.

Our Churches

The Neves Church (Organized)

Our Neves Congregation lost the School room where they have been worshipping over the

years. The roof and walls caved in after a storm. We are grateful for God’s help that no one was

hurt. They are now meeting in another building where they have more room to grow. This

congregation is making good progress. We now have fifteen members and the church was

organized officially on 3 November. Today’s report states 11 members only because the statistics

reported go up to the end of September. The other four members were received afterwards.

We are very happy with the members of this new Church Board – the pastor has a good team to

work with. This local church made good progress this year.

The Sao Tome Central Church (organized) The Sao Tome Central Church is continuing to make progrress in her ministeries. They have a

new local minister. God is helping them to continue the construction of their sanctuary: the walls

and the roof are in place. Please pray that theyt will be able to complete their sanctuary with

success. God is good.

The Saton Church (non-organized) The Sao Tome Saton Church is continuing to grow with more community participation. They

needto expamnd their temporary sanctuary. Please pray that God will help this congregaton by

increasing their membership so that they can be organized and for a permanent location for theri

sanctuary.

The Ribeira Peixe Church (organized) Rebeira Peixe continues to do her part in the community. This year was a difficult one but they

are continuing by faith inour Lord Jersus.

The Malanza Church (non-organized) We want to plant more congregations this next year. I talked with pastor Jorge and asked him

and his wife to consider planting a new work in another part fo the country. They are praying

(please pray for them as well). I asked Humberto Vitória, one of our new local ministers to

consider being the new pastor when Pastor Jorge and his wife leave to start a new congregation. 10

Page 13: Eighth Annual Assembly Journal of the Sao Tome & …nazarene.org/sites/default/files/doclib/dj2014/Sao Tome and... · Eighth Annual Assembly Journal of the Sao Tome & Príncipe District

The Porto Alegre Church (organized) The Porto Alegre Church is continuing to grow in her ministry. They have two new local

ministers – the first ever authorized by a local church board on our district. God is blessing this

church because because of the prayer time they have together in the mornings (six days each

week).

C. NYI District President

May the grace and peace of our Lord jesus Christ be with you all. I started this year within the leadership of the Young People without experience but with help I was able to hold some activities such as: I held two seminars in Ribeira Peixe with a lot of young people participating. I also held two seminars in Porto Alegre with a lot of young people participating. The themes of the seminars were “Our Biblical Responsibilities as Leaders” and “Our Biblical Responsibilities as Young People”. Unfortunately, I was not able to hold these seminares in the North Zone. We held all the meetings. Speaking of the NYI Retreat, I would like to thank the Missionaries, Pastors, the NYI Counsel, the Praise Team and the the young people who helped make thihs happen. We had 54 participants in our retreta. Our theme was “Dating as Young people” Thank you all the confidence you had in me this past year. 13 November 2013 in São Tome Humberto Vitória NYI President

D. District SDMI Chairman

Dear brothers and sisters, Pastors of the North and the South, missionaries Phil and Marta Patalano, and all our congregations, I wish you an everlasting peace. I want to thank our congregations, especially our pastors and missionaries for the help I received to develope the Sunday School ministry in all our churches and with their help, improve each church’s growth. We are able to do God’s work with pastors and missionaries with good trained men with capacity to serve Christ. We must not forget that it is the character of the Sunday School that alerts us to the fact each student needs to be a saved believer who needs training to be an active dynamic worker for Christ. I held differente seminars in the South and North: in the South, on January 19th in Porto Alegre with three participants, on February 1 in Ribeira Peixe with five participants as well as on 26-27 October with eight participants including the pastors; in the North, on 27 January in Neves, 27 January with one participant from Satom, eight from Neves including the pastor and two from

the central church.

I want to call each chuch to remember it’s responsibilities to have a method to support it’sw own ministry. The Sunday School is dynamic when it has spiritual men living sanctified lives. The teaching of the Sunday School within the Church is biblical. It evangelizes, fulfilling Jesus Commission to the Church in Matthew 28:20 and Mark 16:15. The Sunday School is not just a ministry to part of the church, it is for the whole church to help chijldrenm young people and adults to grow – not just individuallyu but also as families. I am happy that we accomplished eighty-five percent of our plans this year. I appreciate all our churches for the confidence they had in me and your help in this ministry. Thank you. On August 31st at 9 am, I held a MNI Seminar in Porto Alegre and in Malanza with some

participants. We talked about their difficulties. Thanks be to God that it went well. Please

forgive me for the other Seminars that did not take place. I hope that the next person who has

this position will do better. Thak you for all of your helpful support of the NMI department.

F. Evangelism Director

Dear Pastors, delegates and friends of the Assembly, I give thanks to God who has helped me with this ministry. It is urgent that we bring the lost to salvation through the Gospel in this country. I started my work in the middle of August with a seminar held (five participants from the South and two from the North). My objective was to train them how to function as a Jesus Film Team, teaching them how to use the equiptment and what each worker’s resposibilities were within the team when the Jesus Film is used to reach the lost for Christ. Testimony: WE were able to teach the team in a short time and give them practical experience. We worked with the São Tome Central Church NYI presenting evangelical films. This team greatly benefitted from the seminar and pu tinto practice what they learned. We presented an evangelical film on August 24th during the Annual District NYI Retreat in the Porto Alegre church with 130 participants. No decisions were made. Testimony: God blessed this time but while we prayed taht God would work in the hearts of those presente, no one accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior. We presented an evangelical film on 21 September 21, again in Neves. We had 210 attendees with 56 decisions made. I held a seminar training before this presentation, training a team in the Neves Church on how to use the equiptment and what each person’s individual responsibilities are for each minute of the presentation.

I certify that the Neves Church has a trained Jesus Film Team (including the Pastor) ready to work with the District Evangelism Director. I thank God for the Pastor and these brothers and sisters who welcomed us this time. Testimony: There were a large number of attendees, children, many young people and adults present – a good camp to work in. The results were hindered with the conclusion on Sunday morning in our Neves Church. Brothers and Sisters, Neves is a small congregation and our Church is not yet recognized by all in the community because we do not have a permanent place for our Church. Let’s pray that God will give us good land and a built sanctuary in Neves so we can gain all the people we can, that our Lord’s name and our church will be recognized throughout this community. The Neves Church has good potential for growth once there is a permanent location for our Nazarene house of prayer. I testify that it was a blessing to work with Pastor Hilton and brother Adjoy who were with us.It was definitely a valuable experience. Let usa all pray that that land will be purchased for this congregation. We also presented na evangelical film in Satom on 12 – 13 October ação em Saton in the Praia Nazare community with a total of 129 persons presente (59 one day and 70 onthe other) with 10 new converts.

Let us always remember the commandment of the Lord Jesus: "... Go into the entire

world and preach the gospel to all people” Mark 16:15.

Submitted respectfully,

Adelásio Carvalho

J. Comité das Finanças

Dear Pastors, other delegates and friends of the Assembly,

Our Lord’s grace and peace be with you all.

The tithes and offerings which we receive in our churches belong to the Lord and are designated

for His work in our Nazarene churches.

We are following the system where 80% of all the funds we receive in the local church are used

by the local church to pay for the Pastor´s salary and other expenses of the congregation. The

remaining 20% is sent to the District and Regional Offices (to help the work of our district and

the rest of the International Church of the Nazarene).

This 20 % is divided into three seperate funds:

11 % - the District Fund

3 % - the Education fund (general fund)

6 % - the World Evangelisation Fund (general fund)

20 %

The local church treasurer is required to send this 20% to the District Treasurer each month.

Our Church of the Nazarene Manual states:

136. Church Treasurer. The duties of the treasurer of the church board are:

136.1. To receive all moneys not otherwise provided for,and disburse the same only on

order of the church board.(129.21)

136.2. To make monthly remittances of all district funds to the district treasurer,

and of all general funds to the general treasurer through the appropriate office,

except as otherwise provided. (414.9)

We follow the “except as otherwise provided” clause in our district. We instruct our local

treasurers to: 1. separate 20% of all the funds received

2. deposit this 20% directly into the district bank account

3. make a photocoy of the bank´s deposit receipt

4. keep the photocopy of the bank deposit receipt in the local treasurer´s records

The Pastor has to submit the original bank deposit receipt with the monthly report to the District.

The District Treasurer is responsible to seperate and send the Education & the World

Evangelisation Funds to our Regional Office in South Africa.

We recommend and encourage each Nazarene congregation within our district to continue with

this system in order to be faithful to the rest of our Church of the Nazarene.

Respectfully submitted,

Rev. Phil Patalano e Rev. Martha Patalano, Missionaries
