Childs Junior MasterChef win overshadowed by his
sexist remark
Victor Beltrans stuffed pepperoni pizza has received less media
coverage than his remark about cleaning and genetics.
Felicidad Beltrn, the mother of 12-year-old Victor, tuned in to last weeks episode of Spains
edition of Junior MasterChef expecting to see her son show off his cooking skills. Instead she
watched horrified as her son expressed the opinion that women instinctively know how to
clean, thanks to genetics. My mouth dropped open when I heard it, she said. Its not at all
what we live in our house. My husband and I share the chores 100% and weve always
stressed equality to our children.
Victor made the remarks after one of the shows judges, Pepe Rodrguez, advised contestants
to begin cleaning their stoves after the team challenges. As the only boy on his team, Victor
exclaimed: My goodness, Im surrounded by girls, and girls already know how to clean
because of genetics. He was quickly reprimanded by Roco, a 12-year old. Eh, eh, eh, watch
what you say, she told him. Rodrguez then stepped in, ordering him to clean the whole
kitchen on his own.
Speaking to the camera afterwards, Victor explained that he hadnt meant what he had said. I
wanted to say that girls know better how to clean than boys, he said. In my point of view,
thats just how it is.
The comments made many people on social media (such as Facebook and Twitter) wonder if
Victors opinions are a reflection of sexist attitudes in society or simply the musings of a child.
I would like to know what hes learning at home, wrote one user on Twitter, while another
indicated that while Victor was being scolded for making the comments on national television
his behaviour is normal among children. More education in equality, please.
Others defended Victor. Keep in mind that hes just a child, tweeted one. Lets not condemn
a 12-year-old boy who became a spokesperson for an ingrained stereotype and a reflection
of inequality, wrote another.
Beltrn sat down with her son to talk about the remarks. It was a complete anomaly. Ive
never heard Victor make a sexist comment. She pointed to the high-pressure atmosphere of
the reality show. The comments are unfortunate, but hes a 12-year-old child who was in the
middle of a challenge, under a lot of pressure and not aware of what he was saying.

1.-You are going to read an opinion article written by a teenager, on gender stereotypes.
Why do we write opinion essays?
An opinion essay has an opening, a body and a conclusion. Match these three parts with their
explanation. What this video and check to see if your answers were correct.

Opening (Introduction) In this part we sum up our reasons and restate our opinion using
different words.
Body
In this part we write a presentation of the topic and state our opinion.
The reader should be informed about our attitude towards the topic. This
part should be brief.
Conclusion
In this part we try to convince the reader giving specific reasons (a
reason each paragraph) and facts to support our opinion. This part
should have at least 2 paragraphs.

Do you think that there are gender stereotypes in the media?

A large number of people say that the media has an enormous impact on the way we think
and act. Even though our society has experienced great changes throughout the last
decades, I find it to be increasingly alarming that both females and males face gender
stereotypes. Despite leaps in legislation, which have broken social barriers, gender
stereotypes are omnipresent in our media, especially in commercials.
First of all, I firmly believe that gender stereotypes are not limited to a specific group of
people. They affect us all, men and women because society gives us certain roles we
need to follow. These roles are clearly seen in commercials. For instance, I have seen
commercials for household cleaning products where a woman is the protagonist. She is
sometimes saved by a man who brings the product and saves her, like Mr. Muscle.
Nevertheless, as I said before, stereotypes not only affect women. In the type of
commercial I mentioned before, sometimes the protagonist is a man who is surprised by
the process of cleaning. Men are portrayed as being dumb and unable to last one day
without their mothers or wives. Commercials such as the one I described perpetuate the
stereotype that women are meant to clean because men are too stupid to even assist with
basic household chores. Despite the fact that nowadays it is increasingly common for the
wife to be the bread-winner while the husband stays at home and takes care of the
children, this is not reflected in the media.
To conclude, I must say that gender stereotypes are indeed present in the media.
Undoubtedly, they influence the way younger generations look at the other gender. As a
mater of fact, gender assumptions limit our potential to be the type of person we wish to
be. In my opinion, the new generation is increasingly aware of discrimination and unfair
prejudices and should focus their attention to eradicate unjust labels.

DIY is in decline because today's men are too soft
As traditional roles have changed, today's men are more like their
mothers than their fathers. No wonder DIY is dying out, says
Martin Daubney.
A few days ago, the owners of Homebase announced they are to
close a quarter of UK stores. The company said that this is due
to the fact that this generation is less skilled in DIY projects.
Some argue that the demise of DIY is the result of the decline in
home ownership. Most people cannot afford a house and are forced to rent. Yet, undeniably,
todays 20- and 30-somethings dont seem to possess your traditional dad skills. Surveys
have shown that only 5% of 18-24s would attempt to unblock a sink. The UK DIY sector is in
decline and at the current rate there will be no DIY sector at all by 2040.
Some people have begun to ask themselves whether the decline in DIY is actually proof of a
deeper malaise in masculinity. DIY used to make us feel manly. The trouble is, being a man
in the old-fashioned sense is deeply unfashionable these days. At some point this century,
many men decided it was time to stop being men and embrace their inner sister.
However, as we lost our rough edges and took on more of what had traditionally been
regarded as female roles, no one really stopped to question whether equality for women came
with a cost for masculinity. In an age where were expected to Hoover, iron, change nappies,
and cook like Jamie Oliver, old-fashioned pursuits like DIY have become old-fashioned and
almost shameful. Its unfashionable to admit, but some men are better at being men when
they have traditional roles that they understand.

women. However, it can be avoided. Lets see some examples:

4-. Lets talk about it! Answer the following questions. Give reasons.
Is it common for men to cook in your country? If so, when do they do it?
Is it OK for men to cry in your country? If they do, in which circumstances do they cry?
What is the best thing about being a woman?
What is the best thing about being a man?
For the last two questions, ask girls to form a group and explain each other the best things
about being a woman. Tell boys to do the same. Then, tell boys and girls to find someone of the
opposite sex and explain them which are from their point of view the best things about being a
woman/man.

Explain to your students that gender stereotypes are promoted in the media, as they
had already seen. Nevertheless, nowadays some stereotypes are exposed through films and TV
series.

8-. Now its your turn!
Do you think Ross is right and there are certain jobs that men should
not do? What about the picture on the right: have you ever seen it
anywhere? What does it represent? Tell us your opinion.
When youre finished give your answer to a classmate to correct.
Let our student know that next session will be dedicated to writing the opinion essay. Show
them the rubric used to asses it. Read it with them and explain aspects which could be unclear
to them. Pass around a paper for them to write down the topic/question of their essay.

Session 9
Opinion Essay
Let students know from the beginning of the unit that they have to write an opinion
essay. After finishing Session 4 tell them to start thinking about their topic and look for
information. They will do the essay in class.
Students will have to give the teacher the question they want to give their opinion on, 1
session before they will have to write it. This is also when the teacher should show them
the rubric used to assess their essay. Read it in class with your students and clarify any
doubts.
Early finishers can respond to the following questionnaire. Students can assess their
teacher and the learning unit.
