Recently I moved to Greoabelt because I wu attracted to the fiicndly ea~ and the prop118ive and toleroot lllitudea ~ the commumty. I am the proud owner of a wonderful Doberman Pinacher mix whom I ''leacucd" from the Wuhington D.C. animal shoelter. She is an "illlide" doa, meaning shoe is kept iD the -while I am 11 work. In the evenings we 10 for walks arouad the neishborhood or play iD the yud.
When I sumined a n:quest for a 4' fence to Greenbelt Homoes, lncorpontcd, I hod no idea that I would be vilifoed by memben of the Architecture· & Environment Committee and the GHI Boord· of Direcun. By means of oollusioo and prejudice. many of these "members" of the GHI community concluded that a ")ouna llirl" such as myself could not be ttusted to raponoibly care for my pet. Some memben of the two BJOUps questioned my motives for requesting a slightly taller fence, lilaling that they "cannot be ...,. that she (myself) is beinc honest with us when she uys that the dog is not viciout and that the dog will be kept i~U~e durinc the day." Others attacked my choice of dog breed; one porson 11 the meetina even stood up and uid that the next dog I get should be a Poodle. These typea of comments are extremely offensive and counterproducuve to the judicious nature of a Board Meeting. 1 did not come to the Board fur them to sanct1on my ~hotL'C of dog breeds. neither did I ask them to pass judsement on my ability to care for an ;~mmal based on my age or &ende-r. In fact. I came to the Boonl as a result of my desire to be rc~ponsible~ if il were not for lhe .:· variance requcsc I woukl alreaJy have my fence in the ground and none of this ridiculouJ "pr1h.:edure .. woukf have taken ploct!!
Arter more than a monch of i~ appmpnatc and urnrtarnnced subJCCIIVt~m and deliberation, the Board of Di=tDrs YOitld to jp'llll my reque.1 for an CIOCqJiion; bowev~. 1t was a very '"ticht" YDie. I am very diuppoiraed tlw some members of these 10 called "Boards" are very quick to make categorically and praumptuously drawn conclusions bucd upon their own penona1 intolerana: of compamon animals.
Funhermore, u 1 socially and politically active )'OUI18 penon, I am happy to terVe u 1 member of a Board or commiaee when I feel that somoe poductivity will come out of my uperiencc. If
