o Conference Presentation – Carmen Huser

Carmen Huser, a HDR candidate from the School of Education, currently under examination, presented results from her thesis at the 27th EECERA (European Early Childhood Education Research Association) conference in Bologna, Italy, themed: "ECE beyond the crisis: social justice, solidarity and children’s rights". The University of Bologna was founded in 1088, and thereby was the first and is the oldest continuously-operating university in the Western world.

Carmen's presentation was titled "Let's close the computer now. Children's dissenting as acts of agency and privacy", and focused how the 4-5 year old children in her research project chose to participate, in particular which strategies they developed and used to dissent from participation. Her research

interest includes ethical, rights-based practices for research involving young children. Her supervisors Prof Sue Dockett and Emeritus Prof Bob Perry showed support with their presence during Carmen's presentation.

Page 3: Education’s Bulletin, where too much research and graduate lus … · 2017. 9. 22. · Carmen's presentation was titled "Let's close the computer now. Children's dissenting as acts

A wonderful coincidence was that Sara Ólafsdóttir, a HDR candidate from the University of Iceland, who visited CSU Albury campus last year in relation with the International research group POET under Sue and Bob's, as well as Sara's supervisor Jóhanna Einarsdóttir's leadership, presented in the same symposium. Sara and Carmen celebrated their successful presentations with their supervisors (pictured right).

o HDR Symposium – Keynote and Workshops Announced

Professor Ron Adams is Professorial Research Fellow in Victoria University’s Graduate Research Centre and Adjunct Professor in the Graduate Research School at Edith Cowan University. Widely published in the history of cross-cultural encounters in the Pacific and post-conflict reconciliation in Bosnia Herzegovina, he is perhaps best-known for his contributions to doctoral research training. As well as having supervised scores of HDR students to successful completion, he has influenced thousands of other research students and supervisors in Australia and globally through his Demystifying the Thesis program, which was awarded the Australian Learning and

Teaching Council 2010 Award for Programs that Enhance Learning: Postgraduate Educati on. Other learning and teaching awards include Victoria University Vice-Chancellor’s Medal for Excellence in Research Training, City of Essendon Prize and the Ann Hilda Sainsbury Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the Maltese Manoel De Vilhena Award.

In this specially-designed series for Charles Sturt University, Professor Adams draws from Demystifying the Thesis to elaborate a strategic framework for HDR students to develop as creative researchers and published writers.

The keynote address, Creativity and Research, dares you to be different—to have confidence in your own creative potential. It sets the scene for the following four workshops by exploring three critical questions: (1) What is creativity? (2) What is research? and (3) What is the relation ship between creativity and research?

Workshop 1, Strategies for Research, covers managing your supervisor, working with theory, developing a manageable research question, and reviewing the literature to position your research vis -à-vis existing knowledge.

Workshop 2, Strategies for Writing, covers designing and writing effective chapters for your thesis, linking paragraphs to produce continuity and flow, writing with intrigue, and a dot point summary technique for exercising control over your own writing.

Workshop 3, Getting Published, covers publishing while completing your higher degree, having something worthwhile to say, developing a publication plan, what journals want, decoding journal quality and impact, authorship issues, and concluding a journal article.

Workshop 4, Abstracts as a Tool for Success, covers how to use abstracts as a planning tool for writing an article, rather than something you do after you have already written the text. The workshop will give you an opportunity to draft your own abstract using the Pomodoro technique of writing.

o Are you travelling as part of your Higher Degree by Research studies? Make sure you are covered

If you are travelling as part of your Higher Degree by Research project, it is critical that a CSU travel plan be approved prior to your travel. This will allow CSU’s Protections/ insurances to respond (subject to the terms, conditions and exclusions of the policies) should there be an adverse event. For further details on this please see the information provided by CSU’s Division of Finance here.

o Hard Bound Thesis Copies no longer required!

We recently advised about the changes to the new HDR Policy. As part of the changes there is no requirement to submit soft or hard bound copies of your thesis. This also applies to those who are currently under examination! If you have already submitted your soft bound copies or have recently been approved to graduate there is no need for you to organise hard bound copies of your thesis and only a digital copy will be required. You can access the new policy here on the CSU Policy Library website. The single policy is now accompanied by 3 schedules, which can be accessed here. If you have any questions please contact Leanne

o Call for Research Commercialisation EOIs: Discovery Translation Fund at CSU

CSU recently joined the Discovery Translation Fund (DTF 2.0) with the Australian National University (ANU) and the University of Canberra (UC). The DTF assists the commercialisation of new technologies and innovations from each university by providing a peer review and evaluation process prior to investment. The goal of DTF 2.0 is to help bridge the critical funding gap between discovery research and the commercial development of new technologies or the establishment of new ventures. The DTF provides opportunity for any project with commercial potential across all disciplines and research areas.

Each university is responsible for funding the next step towards commercialisation for re search originating within its own institution. All appropriate Intellectual Property (IP) arrangements must be in place with the relevant university. There is no cross-funding of projects. CSU has committed investment of up to $350,000 per annum to advance the commercialisation of our own research.

Grants can be awarded up to $50,000 per project, with funding above $50,000 considered for projects of exceptional commercial potential. Funding above $50,000 on any one project can only be awarded conditionally and will be accessible only on the demonstration of a significant commercial milestone.

CSU is now calling for Expressions of Interest for consideration by the Evaluation Committee at the October meeting. Interested researchers and research teams will need to submit a completed EOI form to the CSU DTF Team at [email protected] no later than 28 September.

The EOI Form is available as indicated below. Researchers are strongly recommended to read the DTF 2.0 Guidelines before proceeding. Please direct all enquiries to the CSU DTF Team at [email protected].

Further information and documentation on DTF 2.0 is available at http://www.anuconnectventures.com.au/investment/discovery-translation-fund-2-0/

o Researcher speed dating without pain

Many of you will have seen the researcher slide show at the recent Research Office Roadshow, or at the FoAE Research Forum last year.

Page 8: Education’s Bulletin, where too much research and graduate lus … · 2017. 9. 22. · Carmen's presentation was titled "Let's close the computer now. Children's dissenting as acts

The full slideshow, comprising of over 150 slides can be found at : 90 day folder S:\Common\ Temp Folder Less Than 90 Days\RESEARCH SLIDESHOW

The slides have already been effective in starting conversations between researchers in different schools. It is also worth taking a look at the slides to get an idea of the breadth of research being undertaken at CSU.

The slides will be used at other events, so if you would like to contribute a slide/or modify your existing one please send it to: [email protected]

Good luck to Lisa – presenting at ARMS National Conference

All the best to Lisa McLean, Faculty Research Liaison Officer who is off to New Zealand to attend and present at the Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS) National Conference. The title of her presentation, More than just forms and processes: Bringing together acrobats, theologians, teachers, and communicators, and living to tell the tale, discusses practical ways research administrators can make a positive contribution to research cultures in their universities. This is something that is often overlooked in the literature which usually focuses on research administrators understanding the research culture, ignoring the impact they can and do make.

Lisa ran through a practice presentation this morning for the Liaison Team and Research Office.
