Join Barb for a Journey through 33 feet of GI Tract covering A & P, pathology, and pharmacology of various GI structures and disorders. Barb begins with the mouth and oropharynx, continues through the esophagus, stomach, small and large bowel, and rectum. Functions and disorders of the liver, spleen, and pancreas are reviewed. Clinical entities discussed include: tonsils and adenoids, esophageal varices, Barrett’s esophagus, GERD, peptic ulcer disease, NSAID gastropathy, E.Coli 0157:H7, celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, appendicitis, ulcerative colitis, colon cancer, the rectum as a portal of entry for various and sundry STIs. Barb will discuss the treatment including drugs for GERD such as the PPI’s and H2 blockers, palliative treatment for esophageal varices, Barrett’s esophagus, antibiotics for peptic ulcer disease, celiac diet, various drugs used for Crohn’s disease and UC, and the treatment of colon cancer.

The most important part of any physical exam is taking the patient HISTORY. Learn how to characterize the chief complaint by asking the right questions—the PQRST + AAA way. Barb provides examples of how to use this mnemonic to get the most information in the least amount of time. Barb will then guide you through assessment basics—where to “listen” if you only have a minute, where to “look” if you only have a minute, where to “feel” if you only have a minute. Barb correlates anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology for each major system discussed—the heart, the lungs, the abdomen, and the nervous system. You will also be amazed at the information you can glean from basic vital sign evaluation. Last, but not least, Barb discusses various drug classes and the side effects that can confound a physical exam.
