1 EDUCATIONAL EQUITY IN ACTION CONVENING SUMMARIES FROM THE PRO-ACTION CAFÉ HARVEST REPORTS University of Minnesota June 20-21, 2016 COLLEGE GUIDANCE AND READINESS Project Idea: What are the qualities of effective college pipeline programs? Caller: Shakeer Abdullah Conversation Summary: Multicultural Excellence Program- middle school mentoring and discussion of the barriers. Professional mentors talked to students about the process, support once at the U. Developing an identity as a college bound student- not so much, cultural. Small advising group- four years only. Financial planning. Explanation of the entire cost of attendance. Use MEP as a benchmark and comparison for CORE2025 Grad school focus to help students think even longer term. Professional advisor. Longitudinal focus - can we measure this against others cohorts. Partner with UY. Summer Bridge before freshmen year enrollment. Have input from students in the program- have older students mentor younger students. Identify why this is working- Jerrell and Calita to be interviewed. Professional mentors? Will they have consistent mentors? Families involved in the program from financial literacy and college awareness. Develop help seeking and resource seeking skills, breaking down the myths and imposter syndrome. Asking for opportunities, internships, study abroad, activate your networks- who do you call? Key Insights: What's missing- discuss the pros and cons of student loans and loan forgiveness. Program connection with the schools; keep the cohort connected through college; Look at the Posse program; Support for mentors- training; relationship development- be continuous- put the program above the individual; Parent piece is critical. Parents and cultural liaisons. Social development- use equity teams to help. Consortium of community and corporate partners. Summer components? Right Track internship- support and expose students to jobs and careers. Tutors for students. Leadership development- can the students create a program. School fairs to highlight the CORE 2025 program and get students signed up. Student motivation fluctuates- interested at the start- keep them engaged and remind them why they started Partner with housing LLC's- Summer Bridge Next Steps: Communicate with Principals to identify 2-3 teacher contacts. Coordinate all the college preparedness programs. Mentoring- one consistent and caring relationship with a stable adult. Group mentoring with UY to change college going process. Student initiated mentoring- students identify who they want to mentor them. Team visits kids, then mentors put profiles on line for them to determine who they want. Mentor kickoff - Speed mentoring/networking. Choose and be chosen mentors. Student option to bring in mentor. Connect students to community orgs and school orgs to promote leadership. Advisors should know what the other resources are available to make sure students can persist- homelessness, food shelters, clothing, transportation, DV shelters, sexual health, counseling , financial resources. System navigation is critical to success and retention- they don't know what they don't know. Life happens, how can we help. Deal with the trauma. Keep our mentors mentally healthy. Make the on-boarding and orientation process frank and clear No sugarcoating- let students tell it. Undocumented students- not outing students- internships and challenges to DACA.
