The two activities included in this session contain information regarding the digestive system. They give clear indication of what the digestive organs look like and what their functions are. The first activity provides the pupils with an understanding of the positioning of the digestive organs in the body in relation to each other. These activities can be used as part of a specific digestion lesson or independently. The “Top Trump” cards can be used recreationally at break times.

• The lesson lasted approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes. The topic of digestion was introduced using a powerpoint presentation. Included in the presentation is a video lasting approximately 3 minutes. This also included information about how the lesson was going to run and instructions for the following activities.

• The first activity required the pupils to use the information from the presentation to place the digestive organs in their right position on the human body model. The pupils were then required to label each of the organs correctly.

• The second activity required the pupils to play a game of “Top Trump” cards. These cards were all based on digestion.

Activity oneBuilding a human digestive system

Approximately 15 mins

This activity involves the pupils working in groups of 5 or 6. They are provided with a poster of a blank human body. They are also provided with card cut outs of the main digestive organs including: gall bladder, small intestine, large intestine, stomach, liver and esophagus. The pupils are required to position the organs in the correct place on the human body. They are then required to place the correct labels on the organs. The pupils should be able to complete this activity successfully if they retain the information provided in the powerpoint presentation at the beginning of the lesson. If they struggle it may be useful to guide them through the problem using the following book Food and Digestion. Your body inside-and out (Solaway, 2007).

The following image is the finished product. The pupils should aim to have their human body looking exactly like this image. The teachers will have to provide the pupils with similar images to work with. The outline of the human body can be found on wikipedia and is free for the public to use. The labels and the organ images will have to be hand drawn and painted.

Activity TwoTop Trumps game

Approximately 25 minutes

This activity involves getting into groups of 5 or 6. One person in the group is selected to start the game, this person shuffles the pack of cards and hands an equal number of cards to each member of the group. The first person reads the description on their card to the rest of the group and picks an item from the list. The rest of the group read out their number for the same item. The person with the largest number wins that round. The game then continues. There are 29 cards in each set including an instructions card.
