THE PROGRAM

Second Wind's Teacher-Training is a contemporary model that integrates current scientific research, while simultaneously preserving the essence of the original Pilates Method as it has become known to professionals worldwide. Second Wind’s approach is a unique blend of classical Pilates and up-to-date functional, expressive, and therapeutic movement training. This combination addresses not only what we do but how and why we do what we do. Fundamental movement principles, theory, functional anatomy, experiential exploration, and small class sizes of four to nine students ensure that each movement is consciously executed according to correct biomechanics, clear intention and personal understanding. Anything less is movement through repetition and imitation, which means the nervous system does not respond and our souls stay disengaged. Prioritizing the individual spirit and learning styles of each person who walks through our door, we ensure mastery of movement practice, teaching skill, and service to others.

INTEGRATED MOVEMENT THERAPIES (IMT) ® - OUR UNIQUE ABILITY

The uniqueness of Second Wind’s Certification training lays in our intention, as well the content and design. We combine the study of Pilates with Integrated Movement Therapies (IMT)® so that students develop a broad knowledge base about their own bodies and selves: the anatomical body-in-motion and interface of the body-mind-spirit inherent in conscious and skillful movement practice.

Integrated Movement Therapies (IMT)® combines complementary approaches to exercise, movement re-patterning, postural re-education, pain management, and psycho-spiritual integration. Designed to deepen the performance and teaching of any movement practice, IMT is a personal synthesis created by Danielle Bélec-van Zeyl from over 20 years of experience as a dance artist, academic, practitioner, and studio owner. As an in-depth study of the how of movement with roots in age-old traditions, IMT is influenced by the work of Rudolf Laban (Laban Movement Analysis) and Irmgard Bartenieff (Bartenieff Fundamentals), as well as by modern dance, Pilates, tai chi, yoga, Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy, myofascial bodywork, and on-going scientific research in biomechanics, anatomy, and functional training. As the basis for self-knowledge, movement mastery, and intentional living, the IMT experience transforms understanding of how our bodies move, think, sense, feel, and communicate, propelling theory and practice to a new level of understanding.

LEARNING SKILLS ACQUIRED

1. PRINCIPLES AND THEORY OF MOVEMENT Movement is an art, not just a technique. Movement occurs in time and space, requiring timing, efficiency, accuracy and conscious awareness, regardless of how fast or slow it might unfold. Muscular timing, initiation, relationships, and degree and duration of effort are guided by principles that support understanding and mastery.

2. PURPOSE AND ESSENCE OF EACH EXERCISE

Each exercise in the syllabus is designed to have a particular effect, whether singular or multi-fold. Learning to define the essence of each exercise allows students to fully experience the benefit of the work. With deeper understanding, teachers use the system with accuracy and effectiveness.

3. TECHNIQUE, PHRASING, MOVEMENT QUALITY

Every movement has a beginning, middle and end. All movement can be broken down into step-by- step neuromuscular phases that can be consciously guided, rather than occurring randomly. Mastery of functional and graceful movement requires economy of effort, efficient pathways in space, and timing. Quality is never an accident; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

4. FUNCTIONAL ANATOMY AND MUSCULAR EMPHASIS

Anatomy of the human body is guided by internally coherent systems of reference and function. Students learn how to deconstruct exercises from an anatomical perspective, advancing understanding and knowledge.

5. ART OF TEACHING

Becoming a great teacher requires first being an informed and inquisitive student. Students learn to apply their growing knowledge by developing skills in movement analysis, clear intention and communication, listening and seeing, directing and verbally cueing, and through hands-on adjustments. The art of teaching also includes learning and effectively communicating exercise modifications according to postural type, limitations, injury or age. With this abundance comes giving!

6. MOVEMENT REHABILITATION & EXERCISE MODIFICATIONS

Combined training in Pilates and Integrated Movement Therapies (IMT)® offers copious choices for addressing diverse population types and physical conditions. Movement rehabilitation requires understanding the essence of each exercise and how to creatively modify full forms such that a particular student can successfully master its simplicity rather than bumbling along, hoping to ‘do it right’. With each step of understanding and successful application, the student learns to progress from simple to complex forms until their newly found alignment, neuromuscular intelligence and functional understanding become the norm. Effective rehabilitation is the art of healing.

PRE-REQUISITE

FUNDAMENTALS OF ANATOMY: CONNECT THE DOTS TO RELEASE THE KNOTS

For students with no or minimal anatomy background, the pre-requisite is The Fundamentals of Anatomy: Connecting the Dots to Release the Knots. Fundamentals of Anatomy is the pre-requisite course for Second Wind’s Certification programming. The goal of Fundamentals of Anatomy is to learn the basic “language” and methodology of human anatomy in order to be able to successfully demystify the vastness of the material. In Part One, The Skeletal System, we review the skeletal structure and bony landmarks of the body, as well as anatomical terms, definitions and actions as our learning foundation. In Part Two, The Muscular System, the major muscles of the body and their muscular attachments are reviewed. We explore the basic biomechanics of the spine, head-neck, hips and shoulder joints to understand the interrelationship of muscles, joints and anatomical actions.

• 10 hours (Friday 6-9:30 pm; Sunday 9 am-5 pm) • Course Manuals: Second Wind’s “The Skeletal System” and “The

Muscular System” • Course Fee: $250 • Manuals & Handouts: $120.00 • Total: $370 + HST

REFORMERREFORMER CERTIFICATIONCERTIFICATION

Joseph Pilates was an inventor as well as an athlete. The creation of his self-designed equipment began when he was a prisoner in a POW camp in England during WWI, where he served as both nurse and caretaker. Using the springs of the infirmary beds and various ingenious solutions to help internees recover from sickness and injury, he later devised a series of exercise machines or Pilates equipment to rehabilitate his “patients”. The Pilates equipment available today is designed similarly to those originally created by Joseph Pilates, with the Pilates Reformer being his most popular. The Reformer is a spring-loaded resistance platform that moves with the body via spring-tension, pulleys, and strategically located ropes and straps that support the feet and/or hands depending on the exercises performed. The Reformer challenges core stability, spinal articulation, movement isolation, stability and coordination, adding hundreds of exercises to the Pilates syllabus. Certain exercises demand that the core is stabilized against the movement and resistance of the limbs. In other exercises, the limbs are stabile while the core is mobile. Sometimes the upper body serves as the center of gravity and support as the lower body and limbs move, or vice versa.

CADILLAC & CHAIR CERTIFICATIONCADILLAC & CHAIR CERTIFICATION

CADILLAC The Cadillac, unlike the Reformer, does not move. It is a large piece of equipment - a six-foot long stationary platform framed by metal upright and horizontal poles and bars to which springs attach. Like the Reformer, the Cadillac challenges core stability, spinal articulation, strength, and movement coordination. It features the Roll-Down and Push-Thru Bars, Trapeze, and Leg and Arm Springs. Like all Pilates exercises, movements on the Cadillac emphasise correct biomechanics and whole-body alignment. Many exercises mirror those on the reformer, only stepping up requirements for control and precision. Although a large piece of equipment, the Cadillac is nevertheless very versatile. Also known as the Trapeze, the Cadillac is designed for rehabilitative modifications, as well as strengthening exercises, thereby serving the functional needs of all clients, from beginner to advanced.

CHAIR The Chair is small relative to the Reformer or Cadillac. Its size versatility is supported by the fact that many of the Reformer and Cadillac exercises are also performed on the Pilates Chair. As a complement to the Pilates Mat work and for those with limited home or studio space, the Chair is often the piece of choice. An interesting aspect of the Pilates Chair is that many of the exercises are performed either sitting or standing, facilitating the efficient transfer of the material to our upright stance and daily activities. The Chair, like the other Pilates equipment, also uses spring resistance to align and strengthen the body. The syllabus incorporates exercise modifications and progressions for all levels.

COURSE DETAILS Second Wind's CADILLAC & CHAIR training consists of three modules and a total of 45 in-studio hours. Each weekend is supported by a detailed Second Wind® manual, and modules are taken together and in order. Module A, B, and C occur over three weekends with each weekend consisting of 15 hours of in-studio training, plus lunch and breaks. Summer intensives are also available. The Pilates Ladder Barrel is a rounded barrel surface with ladder-like rungs at one end, used to stretch and strengthen our spine, core, and limbs. Exercises on the Barrel challenge core muscles in all planes of movement. Designed to explore neuromuscular coordination, strength, and control, the syllabus combines stretching and strengthening movements to release tension while building deep support and skill.

INTERNSHIP AND MENTORINGINTERNSHIP AND MENTORING

THE THREE COMPONENTS TO SECOND WIND’S INTERNSHIP AND MENTORING PROGRAM ARE:

1) Self-Practice 2) Observation 3) Practice Teaching

1) SELF-PRACTICE There are two components to Self-Practice. One is studying alone, in the studio or at home, and one is studying with a small group, or in partners. Some students prefer or find it more convenient to study alone, rather than in a group. Conversely, for many, studying in a group or with a partner can be essential to a student's success. Our internship and mentoring program encourages and facilitates the uniqueness of each individual by offering choice and support in all cases. A. Group Study Labs (aka ‘Cert Babies’) or Solo Study

Studio time is provided weekly to facilitate regular group meetings. Study groups are supervised by teachers-in-training like yourselves, who are a few steps ahead of you, as well as by studio instructors. Mentorship meetings are facilitated between students and teachers to help you stay on track in terms of the scheduling, commitment, and results of your self-practice.

Some of the areas of focus explored in group labs are:

a) Focus on Practice

Two thirds of weekly meeting time is spent on the physical practice of movements and exercises, in conjunction with reading and analyzing the support texts that describe each movement in detail.

b) Focus on Teaching

One third of the meeting time takes place in pairs to co-practice teaching, facilitating constructive feedback for each partner. This feedback is exceptionally useful because it offers insight into your present-time progress and guidance, but it also teaches you how to offer feedback, direction, and corrections to your clients in the future.

2) OBSERVATION

Observation of experienced teachers ‘in action’, in both class and private formats, is an essential growth component for successful learning. As one ingredient in our mentorship program, students are required to sit in on classes and/or private sessions with advanced permission in order to witness and develop: a keen sense of awareness of lesson plan progression and logic; movement and learning styles of students; teaching styles; problem solving techniques; and, effective cueing and correcting by

Page 18: EDUCATION INSPIRATION TRANSFORMATION2 THE PROGRAM Second Wind's Teacher-Training is a contemporary model that integrates current scientific research, while simultaneously preserving

18

instructors, all geared towards ensuring that each participant understands the material from the inside out.

Teachers in training are required to document their observations, which are shared and discussed with the instructor at predetermined times throughout the observation term. Although it is useful to observe several classes and instructions for variety, students are also encouraged to attend the same class for a full term in order to witness the teaching and learning progression of one instructor and the class participants. Both observation approaches are facilitated.

3) PRACTICE TEACHING

Practice Teaching carries includes two required components, and one voluntary component.

A. First Things First - Teaching Case Study Case Studies are part of Second Wind’s certification programming, designed to enhance self-practice, teaching plan design, and creative trial and error. Students can practice their teaching skills and knowledge on fellow students, friends and/or family first, where they can experiment, make mistakes, and mess around without fear of reprisal. Books, notes, etc are expected! The contents of the practice teaching phase are documented in a systematic manner and feedback is given. The length of a case study differs for each certification course, with an average of 6-10 hours of teaching.

B. Teaching Assistant

As the skill base and confidence of a teacher-in-training increases, he/she can act as a teaching assistant in a regular studio class, workshop or an already-completed certification course. Often, the teacher-in-training will have the opportunity to teach select section(s) of a particular class while under supervision of the regular class instructor.

We encouraged assistant teaching in the same class that the student has been regularly observing, as he/she will be familiar to the class participants, and the postures and movement profiles of each participant will in turn be familiar to the teacher-in-training. This familiarity supports successful apprenticeship. Assistant teaching is scheduled with the instructor of the class together with the certification coordinator. The teaching case study must be complete and reviewed before undertaking any segment of supervised class teaching. Here are the parameters of the teaching assistant role while a teacher-in-training:

a) Five (5) classes must have been observed prior to beginning to assist the class instructor.

b) After the eighth (8th) class of observing and acting as a teaching assistant, the teacher-in-training can then teach a portion of the class beginning with the warm-up. The date and content taught is decided upon in advance with the instructor. Constructive feedback by the class instructor will be given following the class.

c) At the 11th week of observation/assistant teaching, the teacher-in-training may be given the opportunity to teach a half or full class; this decision is made by the instructor. The instructor will also offer feedback at a mutually convenient time,

*Select teachers-in-training are sometimes invited to start teaching in our Second Wind studio as part of their teaching hours and the first step towards becoming a regular SW instructor.

Second Wind® Pilates Plus® does not just teach you how to do the work of Joseph Pilates but makes sure you understand the concepts within your own body. This work has helped me on both a personal and professional level. I highly recommend this Certification Program to anyone who has an interest in Pilates and IMT®.”

Kim Jelly, Registered Physiotherapist, Athletic Edge Sports Medicine, Toronto, Ontario “The Pilates and Integrated Movement Therapies (IMT)® training at Second Wind Pilates Plus has been ‘jam packed full’ of information. I thought I knew my body but Danielle has opened a whole new world of mind-body connection to me. As a current certification student, what I love most about this teaching studio is how wonderfully accommodating and flexible the instructors are making it easy for me to continue working as I study at my own pace. IMT® has given me strength, mobility and pain management after I was injured in a car accident. After experiencing the success of this incredible work first hand I felt the need to share Danielle’s work with others. I want to make people more comfortable and happier to be in their own bodies thereby making their lives more enjoyable!”

Kim Woolridge, Second Wind® Pilates Plus® Pilates and Certification Student “Danielle Bélec is an outstanding instructor who brings with her a wealth of knowledge and experience which she delivers with a passion that is compelling.”

“Second Wind® Pilates Plus® offers truly comprehensive and well-rounded training for the aspiring Pilates teacher. I found I was quickly and easily learning an abundance of fascinating information on anatomy and movement that has served me well and will continue to do so in my teaching career. What I loved the most about training here though, were the people. All of our instructors were kind, loving teachers who really put us, the students, first and showed genuine caring for our success. We were pushed and challenged to be the best we could be in an encouraging and empowering way, which I am quite certain gave me the courage and confidence I needed to really come into my own as a teacher. I have a ways to go and a lot of learning still to do, but the path is exciting and filled with fun and wonder due to the fact that I have such wonderful, open and generous teachers at Second Wind® Pilates Plus® whom, I have no doubt, will always be present to lend a loving, knowledgeable and supporting hand.”

Cristina Chaparro, Second Wind® Pilates Plus®, Mississauga, Ontario, Studio Instructor “The Second Wind® Integrated Movement Therapies (IMT)® Certification Course has improved my teaching and practice skills in Yoga dramatically. This course has helped me deepen and expand my knowledge of the movement of the human body. When teaching a class, it is crucial to have the ability to analyze the student’s body type and understand their needs to give proper adjustments. The staff members at Second Wind® were very supportive of all of the students who took the IMT® course. They are passionate to teach us with detailed information and hands-on adjustments, until we understand the movement within our own body. I am so grateful for having this great opportunity to study with Danielle Bélec. It is an experience that I will never forget. By taking this course, Danielle has taught me to remind myself that we teach the students the awareness of their mind, body and deep breathing, instead of the pose or physical exercise.”
