July is here and it just so happens to be National Parks and Recreation month. Edmond has an amazing group of parks & interconnected trails, and this is one of the things that make our great city stand out. In this month’s feature, we have highlighted all 26 parks, yes we have 26, in this issue to help you navigate your way and if you are new to Edmond, will help you find your favorite! Not all parks are the same, and I can attest to the fact that you will find something different at each one! Be sure to stop into the MAC center at Mitch Park too, as they have some fantastic classes that are unbelievably priced, for all age groups and such a great way to have fun & stay cool!

The 4th of July has come and gone, and as usual, Edmond’s LibertyFest was the best! We’ve included a pictorial of the amazing firework’s display at UCO, just in case you were not able to make it out. In our newest feature Field Trip, we took a tour and got the inside scoop on what’s happening down at the Chesapeake Boathouse and the amazing things to come down in the Boathouse district of OKC. Our My Yard feature highlights the Edmond YMCA Community Youth Garden sponsored by the Edmond YMCA and the City of Edmond. These kids are doing a terrific job and are selling their vegetables every Friday in front of the YMCA on Rankin at 11 am until they run out.

Jason Boag, owner of Crossfit OKC here in Edmond, is back this month with fitness tips in Body & Mind, as is Leann Richardson, owner of Senses, with a new Happiness feature!

Lara Veazey, of Lifestyles OKC, has provided us with an amazing Teriyaki Pork Tenderloin grilling recipe for Metro Food & Drink. Vance Gregory, owner of Edmond Wine Shop has provided one of the best Margarita recipes we’ve had to date, and with these two combined, it takes patio time to a completely new, enjoyable level!

Our Products We Love section highlights Jane Wilson’s book for breast cancer survivor’s which is a journal and inspirational guide, as well as a test on the newest trend of crackle nail polish and a test on 2 household cleaners that claim to remove water & calcium build up. If you are interested in what our local retailers have in store, check out the Shop Local Edmond section in the center of the magazine, for sales, specials and more. If you are looking for local events, be sure to take a look at the July Events Calendar!

Be sure to follow our Facebook page & Twitter accounts at EdmondActive, where we pass along local info & specials, product and more from our advertisers to over 5,000 local residents. And follow EdmondActive.com for photos, video, interviews with local people & businesses, our weekly column Around Edmond that has been highlighting local shopping with Shop Local Edmond, events and more since July of 2009!

Thank you Edmond for reading for the last 2 years, we cannot wait to see what year 3 brings!

Lake season is just around the corner, ladies. Are you ready to put that swimsuit on yet? Ready to rock those short shorts? Time to start thinking about it. This month I’d like to dispel some common myths about women and weight training and also share some tips on adding this potent stimulus into your workout regimen -if you haven’t already.

Myth #1 - I don’t lift weights because I’m afraid of getting “bulky”

The hormone most responsible for muscle size and growth is testosterone. Both women and men have some level of this hormone circulating through their body. The kicker is, women have been shown to have 10 - 20 times lower resting testosterone levels than men. What does this mean? It means, ladies, that you may gain a little muscle size after starting a weight training program but good luck getting any more than that. Weight training helps increase lean body mass, which in turn helps reduce body fat.

Myth #2 - Women should train differently than men (hence, little to

no weights)A lot of women are afraid of lifting

weights because they do not want to hurt themselves. This is a very valid concern, and not just women but men too, should take care to learn how to properly lift weights to avoid injury. Most injuries from weight training stem from two things - improper lifting technique and the lack of gradual progression in weight. Going too heavy too soon is a recipe for disaster, so is using poor technique. No evidence suggests that this is more likely to happen to women than men. All weight training participants should follow a program that allows for gradual increases in intensity and load.

Myth #3 - Women should stay away from high-intensity or high-load training

We hear this one all the time - women should use light weights and go for more reps. Again, you don’t want to get all bulky, so don’t go heavy or super hard. The trouble with this line of thinking is that these light training loads can be substantially below what is necessary to drive adaptations. Women

actually need to train at volumes and intensities that are high enough to drive the favorable adaptations in bone, cartilage, ligaments, and tendons that weight training can provide.

So ladies, if you do not include weight training as part of your current program, consider the following benefits:

Increased bone density provided by weight training reduces the risk of osteoporosis.

Stronger connective tissues increase joint stability and help prevent injury.

Increased functional strength for sports and/or daily activities.

More lean body mass leads to less body fat.

Higher metabolic rate due to increase in muscle.

Improved self esteem and confidence.

If you make the decision to add weight training into your workout program make sure to consult with a certified personal trainer or strength and conditioning specialist. They can design a plan for you that keeps you safe and continues to give you the results you desire.

Happiness:Volume 6By Leann Richardson, M.Ed., LPC

Happily we will next be assessing “Rule #5” out of the “10 Rules For Happiness” in this edition! “If you realized how powerful your thoughts are, you

would never think a negative thought.” – Peace PilgrimRULE #5: Pause for reflection; meditate on the good

things in life. Focusing on the good aspects of life helps to prevent hedonic adaptation.

Take some time to reflect on the fact that we were optimistic as children. We hoped good things would happen, we could get into arguments with our friends but didn’t let angry feelings stay with us and quickly got over it. Bad things were temporary and we tended not to blame ourselves for bad events. They just happened and we bounced back easily from them. To an extent being optimistic as an adult is simply remembering what we originally knew. But sometimes we need more than to just remember how we were as children. We need simple and easy activities we can do to bring back that childlike optimism.

Keeping a diary is a tool you can use to learn to be more optimistic:

Keep a diary in which you write about both good and bad events in your life. Write about the reasons why the good events will last, will spread and are as a result of your own actions. Write about the reasons why bad events will pass quickly, are limited in their effect on you and why you are not completely to blame.

Write in your diary descriptions of your preferred future.

Savor your positive experiences by writing about them in detail.

Keep a gratitude diary.Reframing ALL unpleasant events in your diary will

help you find hidden gifts. For fun I challenge you to take Seligman’s Optimism

test. Go to his website at www.authentichappiness.org and register for free. Write about the results in your diary! For further coaching to learn how to be optimistic in order to gain true happiness call me at 405-315-6330 for an appointment!

Decorating Trend Report: Winter 2011By Jennifer Hicks CID / Designing Diva Interiors, LLCwww.DecorateOKC.net/blog Photos: Sherri Hultner

At least twice a year, designers and retail store buyers flock to the mecca known as Market. Searching for the hottest items, inspiration for their next project or the perfect pièce de résistance for that picky client, this is every manufacturer’s chance to show the world what they’ve been working on for the last year. Since market showrooms work six months in advance I will be sharing with you a few of the biggest decorating trends for the fall/winter of 2011. Pick one, pick a few! The great news is, they can all live together peacefully without too much effort so you can make a big statement with just a few little additions to your humble abode.

1) Slip covered seating. Forget everything you thought you knew about sloppy furniture covers! The slipcovers

of today are 100% designer-inspired with tailored lines, gorgeous fabrics and the courage to go where no slipcover has gone before-- on everything from ottomans to bar stools. The bar stool seen here is covered in a natural linen which fits in almost anywhere and makes a fashion statement all by itself without clashing with your other focal points in a room!

2) Simple fabrics and textures. I couldn’t help but notice that everything seemed to be going back to a simpler time with homage being paid to the farmhouse/cottage look. Table linens, throw pillows, ribbons-even scarves- and other decorative accessories abound in burlap, linen, lace, rustic metal and mesh wire. I’ve always

been a fan of the clean, uncluttered vibe that these materials provided and I’ll admit, I was in designer heaven when I saw an entire wall of these beautiful table clothes and decorative throws. Do I even need to point out how many things they would go with?!

Pin a brooch on one to dress it up for a special occassion or leave bare for everyday dining.

3) Numbers and Initials. While this trend isn’t exactly “new” it sure doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. The classic monogram is hotter than ever, showing up on the expected (pillow shams) to the unexpected (shower curtains). As for the numbers, there doesn’t appear

to be a formula going on here! Just some pure simple fun with numerals printed on pillows, bedding, window panels, chair cushions, even wallpaper is sporting this smart trend!

4) Navigation decoration. Want to dress up a wall in a hurry and be fashionable on the cheap? Hang a large map or compass for instant style. Who would have thought that those dreary maps from geography class would have ever charmed us as adults? Globes, maps and compasses all point to great decorating this fall. For added

My Home

My Home

drama, create your own wallpaper by gathering enough maps to completely cover your space but burn the edges before you install. This look really suits a home office or a boy’s bedroom.

5) Vintage charm. Nearly every showroom had something noticeably in common: vintage

was making its way back in a huge way. From lighting to fashion, there was definitely something to bring back the nostalgia everywhere I looked. Look for Christmas decorations circa 1950’s, lace linens that remind you of your

grandmother and faded, time-worn colors that blend perfectly into today’s modern decor. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be expensive to get this look. Many of us have vintage finds in our own attics and paint suppliers offer an array of kits to help you add antique charm to any piece of furniture. The *great *news

is this isn’t a trend that will be out of style by next year. There’s a reason for the saying “history repeats itself”. Hang on to Aunt Hazel’s handkerchiefs... they’ll look lovely hung on a clothesline in the mud room and better still- you will think good thoughts every time you walk through the room. And isn’t that what great design is all about?

It’s always exciting to hear an idea and then get to see it unfold. Last July, when we interviewed Mayor Douglas on the State of Edmond, she had mentioned with much joy the prospect of a community garden. This July, we are highlighting the fruit of these efforts between the City of Edmond and the Edmond YMCA.

And, not only is this a community garden, the Y kids also sell the vegetables & fruit they grow every Friday starting at 11 am in front of the YMCA on Rankin.

These kids are getting an amazing set of lessons to take through their life about growing, maintaining, and sales, we commend everyone who was involved in this project and hope to see it around for a long time.

GuiltlessSummer GrillingTeriyaki Pork Tenderloin By LaraVeazey,MA,RD/LD,CPTRegisteredDi

Discover the magic of marinade! After you fix and forget it, the marinade flavors and tenderizes.makes:6 servings

Teriyaki Marinade2 tablespoons olive or canola oil1/4 cup soy sauce2 tablespoons ketchup1 tablespoon white vinegar1/4 teaspoon pepper2 cloves garlic, finely choppedPork2 pork tenderloins (about 3/4 pound each)1 pineapple, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch slicesDirections:1. Mix all Teriyaki Marinade ingredients. Fold thin end

of each pork tenderloin under so pork is an even thickness;

secure with toothpicks. Place pork in resealable plastic food-storage bag or shallow glass or plastic dish. Pour marinade over pork; turn pork to coat with marinade. Seal bag or cover dish and refrigerate at least 8 hours but no longer than 24 hours, turning pork occasionally.

2. Brush grill rack with vegetable oil. If using charcoal grill, place drip pan directly under grilling area, and arrange coals around edge of firebox. Heat coals or gas grill for indirect heat.

3. Remove pork from marinade; reserve marinade. Cover and grill pork over drip pan or over unheated side of gas grill and 4 to 5 inches from medium heat 25 to 30 minutes, brushing occasionally with marinade and turning once, until pork is slightly pink in center. Cut pineapple slices in half. Add pineapple to grill for last 2 to 4 minutes of grilling, brushing with marinade and turning once. Discard any remaining marinade.

4. Remove toothpicks from pork. Cut pork across grain into thin slices. Serve with pineapple.

Vance’sAgave MargaritaRecipe By Vance Gregory / Edmond Wine Shop

2 parts mix (I like Pepper Creek Farms, Margaritaville or Jose Cuervo Margarita

Mix)1 part 100% Agave Tequila1/2 part Cointreaujuice of 1/2 lime (more if you want

it less sweet)Salted glass rim (optional)

If you like salt on the rim, rub glass rim with piece of lime, then invert into margarita salt.

Use a shaker or pitcher to mix all ingredients, then shake or stir well with plenty of ice.

Proportions are not set in stone....you can make yours more or less strong, and more or less sweet. Using more Cointreau gives it more orange flavor and sweetens it up a bit. Triple Sec is a substitute for Cointreau, but the original recipe used Cointreau, which has more orange flavor. I don’t recommend Grand Marnier because it has Cognac in it which covers up the flavor of good Tequila.

Always use 100% Agave tequila. That’s all that’s sold in Mexico. If it isn’t 100% agave, it must still be at least 51% agave-based, but it hasn’t the character of real Tequila.

Any questions? Feel free to call or email.

Have fun!

Product Review

New Products We LoveBy Sherri Hultner

Lime A-way vs. CLR Bath & Kitchen Daily

During the summer, who wants to spend more time cleaning? With everyone home during the summertime, especially kids, it’s hard to keep water spots & calcium build up from forming. And then there is calcium build up that is almost impossible to remove. We tested these two newer spray versions of lime & calcium cleaners to see if their claims were founded on our chrome kitchen faucet and our teenage boys toilet.CLR Bath & Kitchen

This product should be in every single home in America. Not only does it do what it claims, it does it on contact. In addition, after the prescribed 3 minutes wait time, our kitchen faucet was spotless, even before rinsing. Here in Edmond the hard water will tend to make grey streaks in the bowls of our toilets and can accumulate calcium buildup. This product cut right through on contact. Amazing product and less toxic than the original, with a fresh scent.Lime A-Way

This is the same Lime A-Way product as the original, and while it did get the water spots & calcium off our kitchen faucet, it left a foggy set of streaks and took longer than the CLR Daily and it had to be reapplied a second time to get the rest of the calcium build up off. This product is pretty toxic and did not have the fresh scent as the CLR Daily. For toilets, it did cut through heavy calcium deposits, but again, it took longer than the CLR Daily.

Crackle Nail PolishIt’s not often there is a change in the world of nail polish,

besides hues, until now. I decided to step out and try this nail treatment, as it only came out 2 months ago. I tried a black undercoat with a plum metallic “crackle” top coat, which you can find at your local Sally Beauty Supply, with a quick drying clear coat. The other crackle finishes are silver, gold, grey, and more depending on the brand.

The cost of these two polishes run at $8 combined. You can find a larger selection of colors at stores like Ulta with brands like OPI at a higher cost, but the lower cost polishes really stand up and look just as good as the higher priced product. Definitely worth a try!

OKC Boathouse District

Field Trip

Field Trip

By all appearances rowing has really taken hold in Oklahoma City. The Boathouse District has been expanding rapidly, with the addition of the Devon Boathouse and the finish line tower, and even more plans are in the works for further expansion. Both OU and UCO are making plans to build their own boathouses in the district.

The Boathouse District has already been recognized as an Olympic-level training site with the state-of-the-art facilities in the Devon Boathouse. They have a rowing flow-pool, an altitude chamber, weight rooms and about a hundred rowing machines.

The whole idea behind the Boathouse District is to get the public out on the river and involved in the sport, and it’s working. You can join the crowd and sign up for classes at the Chesapeake or Devon Boathouses. They even have summer camps for the kids.

July is National Parks and Recreation month and Edmond has an amazing group of parks & interconnected trails, which is one of the things that make our great city stand out. In this month’s feature, we have highlighted all 26 parks, yes we have 26, in this issue to help you navigate your way. If you are new to Edmond, we hope this guide will help you find your favorite! Not all parks are the same, and I can attest to the fact that you will find something different at each one! Also, be sure to stop into the MAC center at Mitch Park too, as they have some fantastic classes that are unbelievably priced, for all age groups and such a great way to have fun & stay cool! You can find out more at http://www.EdmondOK.com/Parks/Rec or by calling 359 – 4630.
