The last 4 weeks has been crazy in Oklahoma where the weather is concerned. When this happens, and apparently now not just every 100 years, it knocks everybody’s schedules off, from business & networking to fitness/diet schedules.

The one schedule some of us live by (at least 40,000 + of us) is our kids school schedules. Unlike our business to working out or eating right, our kids can’t continue on with their classwork when there are snow days. This stokes out the kids, well, most of them. For teacher’s and parents it just adds concern of just how late into June school will continue. We are on our 2nd blizzard & 3rd storm of the year and so far, the kids have missed a total of 8 days of school. This equals just short of two full weeks of instruction.

We took a poll at Twitter & our official Facebook Fanpage at EdmondActive, and after an amazing amount of feedback 98% of you would not be willing to sacrifice spring break week to make up the missed days, and we just lost Presidents Day on Feb. 21st. One teacher stated on our Facebook wall that adding minutes to each school day doesn’t really help the teachers or the students when it comes to the lost instruction time.

Why didn’t we all just hard core it and get the kid’s back into school? The Edmond Public School Superintendent sent out a release outlining how they call a snow day after a snow storm. They aren’t being wimpy or overly cautious and have a great criterion in place to make their call. Basically, they take three buses along with SUV’s out and run them in the

snow to see how far out or if they will get stuck. Unfortunately, there were many parents who didn’t understand why we had 3 more snow days; however, 2 of the 3 buses on Thursday got stuck. The last thing any of us wants is for our kids to be stuck on a bus in the snow! Great job EPS!

In this month’s issue, we have some fun stories, one about an amazing couple who do a great job creating a really romantic atmosphere for those of us here and around Edmond. Read about Martha & Gary Hall’s amazing journey in creating Romantic Edmond with the Arcadian Inn Bed & Breakfast and Aaron’s Gate Country Cottages in Guthrie. As well, we have a cautionary tale about social media and the legal ramifications it can have, some great deals with Shop Local Edmond. Jennifer Hicks CID of Designing Diva Interiors LLC talks about how to purchase a couch in this month’s My Home section, which is actually a MUST read. Leann Richardson gives us more great advice about the corralation between happiness & working out with her column Happiness Vol. 3. Jason Boag, owner of Crossfit OKC talks about consistency in this months Body & Mind fitness section and Chris Hultner writes about some regional BMX fun as he attended a longstanding race in the BMX world, the Sooner Nationals in Guthrie.

We’ve changed up the events calendar and will be doing our best to bring you Edmond events, but also events around the Metro that are fun, as well! Have a great month!

Finely chop or crush 2T chocolate shavings and spread on a saucer. Drizzle a small amount of Chambord on another saucer, just enough to coat the rim of a martini glass. Invert the martini glass in the Chambord, then dip into the chocolate shavings to cover the rim of the glass. Carefully pour the Godiva Vodka in the glass without disturbing the chocolate rim. Sprinkle remaining shavings on top of drink. Use a drink skewer or party frill to spear a chocolate truffle and place over glass. Enjoy!

This month we dissect the “Rule #2”! The primary focus for the month of February is heart health and I am encouraging you to look at your heart health as both physical and emotional health.

Rule #2: Exercise regularly. Regular exercise is an effective cure for mild depression and anxiety. It also stimulates more energy, and is good for the mind and body.

I know a lot of you made a New Year’s resolution to exercise regularly and are already struggling with fulfilling that resolution since many of you have been housebound due to Snowmaggedon or possibly mentally bound with Seasonal Affective Disorder. Regardless of what your reason is for not exercising, know that you can do something about it.

Most of us have cognitive dissonance when it comes to exercising. We know if we work out we will feel better by having more energy physically but right now we don’t have the energy to get moving! If you can’t get out of the house getting

moving can be as simple as putting on that favorite song that you can’t help but dance to. Put that iPod on repeat and dance around the house for 10 minutes, as good exercise only requires that the heart rate be elevated for 5 minutes. The upbeat music can do wonders for the psyche also!

If you are suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder you can easily combat it with 30 minutes of light per day. This can be achieved with light therapy using a special lamp with a very bright fluorescent light (10,000 lux) to mimic light from the sun on the days when the sun is minimal. On days when getting real sunlight is an option long walks outdoors will provide exercise while getting that much needed sunlight. Call for an appointment with your health care provider if you experience symptoms of seasonal affective disorder as talk therapy and antidepressant medication may also be effective.

Happiness is a choice that we make just as exercising is a choice and they go hand in hand. Choose happiness by exercising regularly!

HAPPINESS VOLUME 3By Leann Richardson, M.Ed., LPC

I’m going to share one the biggest secrets I have learned while working in the health and fitness industry for the last 5 years. You ready? Here it is: Nothing replaces hard work and consistency. You almost can’t go wrong if you get these two things right.

Our lives here in America move at a very fast pace. There are literally hundreds of different things we do each day. Most of our dealings give us instant gratification. We get closure everywhere we turn. You want that new car? Go get it. You want a bigger TV? Go get it. You want a new hairstyle? Sit down in this chair. You want a beach ready body for summer? Um...yeah..., you’re gonna have to put in a lot of work and it could take 6 months to a year!! There is no, “Just got a new set of abs at the store!“ or “How do you like my sleek and toned upper arms? Just picked them up at the mall.” Getting what you want physically can, and does, take a whole lot of hard work and time.

So knowing that reaching your fitness goals takes a lot of hard work and consistency, I’m going to suggest that you think of it like this: saving for something you really want. Yes, just like a piggy bank. Since we cannot finance fitness, it’s literally something that we have to save for. And by save, I mean putting something in your fitness piggy bank every day, week after week, month after month, until you get what you want.

This is what it takes. You have to make up your mind that you are going to save until you can afford what you would like to get. You have to be willing to put in as much hard work as it takes and be as consistent as you can. I cannot understate the importance of having the right mental attitude when it comes to health and fitness goals. The hardest thing about starting a diet and exercise routine is to keep doing it, especially when you are not seeing the results that you want to see. For most of us this means we’re not seeing results FAST enough. This is the problem that I see us run into with respect to reaching our fitness goals, we don’t get to see immediate changes in our bodies the way we would like. So many other things work this way, our bodies though, especially as we get older, do not. So toughen up folks, and strap in for the ride, you’re gonna be here for a while.

I recommend giving any new diet or exercise routine a 6-8 week test run before making any decisions on its merits. 2-3 weeks is not appropriate. If you have honestly put in the hard work and consistency for these 6-8 weeks and you have not seen any results, consider trying something different. There are a lot of fitness programs and diets out there to follow, find one that interests you and take it for a spin. Just be sure to go in with the right mental attitude, one of hard work and consistency. You will like your new body.

Guide to Simple Sofa Shopping

Two things happen in homes across America about this time every year. 1) We start thinking about how to spend that tax return. 2) We realize how worn out our sofa is after spending more time with it over recent chilly months. A natural solution presents itself: Invest a portion of your tax return on a quality sofa that will last. That sounded easy, didn’t it?

If you’re like a large number of my clients, you’re at a stand-still when it comes to agreeing on the most-used piece of furniture in the room. “We can’t find one that is comfortable for all of us”. “I don’t know what shape to buy for my room.” “I can’t decide between all the styles and fabrics.” Have you ever said any of these? These frustrations usually result in either settling for something so-so or in no purchase at all (looks like the caved-in cushions extended their stay through

2010). No longer! Its time to get some clarity on shopping for sofas!KNOW YOUR LIMITS

Measure your floor space, staircase and doorways before you begin shopping- know the measurements of any obstacles that will be between getting the sofa from the store to its new location. Its painful watching that sofa you fell in love with in some catalog get loaded back into the truck because it won’t fit. Many people love the look of massive, Old World seating but live in homes with narrow doorways. While the sofa may fit beautifully in your living room, it may not fit past your front door. True, the legs of some pieces will come off for easier transportation, but this is not something to bet on. If the sofa will be moved upstairs measure all angles to make sure there is room to maneuver without damaging railings or drywall.KNOW YOUR BUDGET

These days you can purchase good looking sofas starting at $300 but beware. This is definitely one of those times when you get what you pay

for. A quality sofa with good bones, cushion filler and durable covering may start at around $700. As with all home furnishings, the sky is the limit so its best to set fourth a budget before you shop so you don’t end up with a stunning $5000 Italian designer sofa but no groceries for the spring!KNOW YOUR OPTIONS

The settee is making a comeback and more and more people come to appreciate the elegance and comfort of these classic pieces. Available in upholstery fabrics or leather although I highly recommend a posh, uber-lush fabric that begs you to come sit a spell and dive into your favorite book. The settee has only one arm and it is usually set high, with an exposed wood frame. Ideal solution for eclectic or Victorian decorating styles. Also known as “fainting couch”. Some newer versions, like the over sized leather one in my living room, easily seats two-- if I feel like sharing!

The wedge sofa is a compromise between a sectional and a sofa. Slightly rounded towards the middle, this

My Home

edmondactive.com 11

My Homestyle is can be found in traditional or modern fabrics but is not often found in leather. The wedge fits nicely in corners where floor space is limited or paired up with two chairs and floated in the middle of a larger room that needs to be “sectioned off” for easy traffic flow.

The modular sectional is typically available in modern fabrics and leather. This option allows you to customize the shape that suits your needs best whether that be an “L”-shape with a chaise lounge on the left side or an 83” straight sofa with a chaise lounge on both ends for bigger families. I.O. Metro in Edmond carries my favorite, pictured here. Available in several durable family and pet-friendly fabrics.

The leather sofa appeals to many design styles these days. Prefer an Old World, gentleman’s study atmosphere? Consider a caramel-colored leather with large nail head trim. Into the straight, clean lines of minimalist design? Check out sofas in whites, blues or blacks with low backs, low arms and tufted cushions. Bomber leather is still popular with the guys and the best part about this option is that it wears wonderfully. Scratches,

fading and 400 pounds of football fans during Super Bowl Sunday don’t bother this sofa any, in fact, it all adds to the charm.

The Lawson sofa can be spotted by its high back and low arms. Ideal for families and is comfortable for people of all heights (usually). This is a traditional style that works with just about any decor scheme.

The Slipper sofa is an entertainer’s best friend. Perfect for those cocktail parties because it has no arms; it forces people to mingle a little here, a little there. No one will be lounging for long periods in this classic set up. Recommended for smaller rooms and can be ordered in just about any type of fabric.

The Chesterfield sofa is nothing if not elegant. High arms and back, tufting and elegant “bones” pay tribute to the 19th century. Not recommended for households with little ones as this style is at its best in luxurious fabrics like velvet. No removable cushions. With every inch perfectly tailored, this is certainly style-specific and will not likely come cheap if its well-made.KNOW YOUR FAMILY’S NEEDS

This may sound like a no-brainer but I see countless shoppers wander into a

showroom, plop down on something that looks appealing and just hop right back up. This is hardly a way to test drive a sofa! The sales staff won’t mind if you get comfortable (just keep the shoes on, please). If you’re looking for something you can take a Saturday afternoon nap on, by all means, lie down! See if the cushions support your neck and back for more than just a few seconds. If you need a sofa that your three year old can climb up onto to sit and read with you, skip the sofas that sit high off the ground and have twelve pillows across the back. If everyone in your family is quite tall, a modern sofa with a low back is never going to feel comfortable- you will always feel like you’re in a waiting room.

So now that you’ve done your prep work, time to check out the selections! Many manufacturers have great options online and in catalogs but I suggest trying the local fare first. Designing Diva Interiors recommends these fine establishments for their selections, customer service, pricing and courtesy: Brecheen Brothers, Oklahoma City, Galleria Furniture, Oklahoma City, I.O. Metro, Edmond and Traditions, Edmond.

Legal Media

14 edmondactive.com

When you log in to your favorite social media site, most people do so to interact with friends, acquaintances, and others who share your interests. Not a single person I know logs in with the fear or even inkling that anything they say or do may be held against them in a court of law. Really, people are just thinking about sharing & acquiring information.

According to legal experts, the internet is not a free for all when it comes to posting your thoughts. Courts, according to case laws around the country, are allowing content from sites like Twitter and Facebook, and are including it in “E Discovery”, which really isn’t a surprise, as more and more people are becoming social media savvy.

The reason for this article brought up a good question. Does an attorney need to have evidence of an actual personal or physical connection before involving strangers in a lawsuit, before he is able to subpoena fans of a Facebook business Fanpage?

After weeks of research, and asking this question of area attorneys, the answer is no. Any attorney at any time may issue a subpoena to anyone for anything. However, the catch is this. Most attorneys’ normally will have a good reason or will have made a direct connection, at this point, as a subpoena is a legally binding request. If you don’t answer it you could find yourself with a warrant out for your arrest. A good attorney won’t just throw a subpoena out there to see what sticks, which is what I was told directly from the attorney who served me in January.

In our case, we received a subpoena from an attorney regarding a business and people we had never heard of before. After several phone calls and emails, the serving attorney finally got back to me stating he

linked me to these people/businesses via a Facebook Fanpage. Then he stated that out of 331 fans, I was the only one who was subpoenaed because I had put a “thumbs up” or “Liked” a picture with the caption, “Mobile Transcription iPhone Apps Now Available”. This was this attorney’s only connection between me and the plaintiff or the defendant’s.

After much research, I found that this attorney is definitely in the age group that should be very familiar with social media and its workings. To my surprise, he stated directly that he had no idea how Facebook worked and that I had to know this plaintiff personally to have “Liked” the same photo. He did not research or do his “due diligence” and had we not learned that not answering a subpoena would have landed me with an arrest warrant, this would have put me in legal harms way.

I had to explain to this young attorney, that I clicked “like” because of my love of advanced technology and for no other reason. I also had to let this attorney know that I was not currently a fan of the page, and was invited via a networking acquaintance that was trying to help the marketing firm build the page’s following. He stated that this didn’t matter.

After explaining to him how Facebook works and that Facebook content runs through the newsfeeds of every member, that most people don’t actually spend time at business fanpages, and that Facebook runs off the premise of “six degrees of separation”, he finally agreed to excuse me from my subpoena and any responsibility that may arise from being served.

What we learned and hope to get the word out about is this: your actions on social media sites should be no different than those you have at work, a social or networking function.

Directly afterwards, I felt a little nervous about whom I associated with or pages that I had liked, as I receive hundreds of page requests a week. It also made me feel like my freedom of expression had been a tad violated, as a “thumbs up” is really a symbolic expression of opinion. After researching case laws involving social media nationally, from district courts up to the Supreme Court, I could not find one single instance of an attorney creating a direct connection via the “Like” feature on Facebook. I think that this may be the first time, and the precedent set really sets the tone for what social media will bring with it in the next few years.

Here are some great pieces of advice from 3 local attorneys’ that will help keep you out of trouble online:

Jeffrey Taylor of Absolute Legal Services LLC

Use social media sites, like Twitter and Facebook, in the same manner you’d use hydrochloric acid: handle with care, use protection, and keep a safe distance.

Social media can be enlightening, entertaining, and connecting, when used in the proper context and state of mind. Anyone who engages in social media must be conscious of the public nature of anything posted or discussed. Be aware that anything you say about anything and anyone, can and will get repeated, liked, “retweeted,” and eventually, back to the individual or organization you’re discussing.

Be cautious about what information you’re sharing, and with whom you’re sharing it. Be aware that anything you say can and will be used against you in someplace, and at some time.

Every once in awhile, we get lucky enough to run across

people that are highly creative and just genuinely friendly. This

was the case for Chris and I as we stopped by the Arcadian Inn

Bed & Breakfast last week to shoot photos and take a tour.

As you walk in the front door and Martha Hall, owner/inn-

keeper gives you the tour, it is amazing to see and hear about all

that she and her husband Gary have done. And, implementing

their ideas with their own hands over the 20 years they have

owned and run the inn. The amazing story of how they pur-

chased the inn, even though it was completely gutted, and how

they rebuilt the inn that we all know to its current state as a bed

and breakfast is a really fascinating and inspiring story.

According to Martha, the little yellow house on 1st Street and

University was the home of Dr. Arthur Masters Ruhl, M.D. and

his wife, Edith, built in 1908. Their only child, Floranna, was

born in 1911. In 1928, Dr. Ruhl enlarged his home by having it

jacked up 12 feet and then building a new first floor underneath

the jacked up house! When that was completed, they sat the

original house down on the new first floor, creating a three story

home. The doctor added the sunrooms on the first and second

floors on the south and east at that time.

The doctor died in 1936 and Mrs. Ruhl lived by herself in the

big yellow house until 1977. At that time, her grandson, John,

moved in with his family. After they moved out, the house fell

into disrepair and it went on the market.

After watching an oilman come in, in 1984, and gut the house

to make an office building, the plans fell through and the home

went back to Herman and Floranna in 1989, to which they

placed it back on the market. This is where Martha and Gary

Hall’s family dream started and what you see now is 20 years

of heart and soul poured into this gem of a business we all call

the Arcadian Inn Bed and Breakfast. If you get a chance, stop

in to say hi, browse the gift shop or ask for a tour, you won’t be

sorry!

Aaron’s Gate: The French HenOne of the cottages at Aaron’s Gate is the French Hen. It

gets its name from the wonderful French inspired colors & decor used to decorate it.

This amazing cottage is the newest of the properties cottages, and has an outdoor jacuzzi along with a wonderful jetted

tub for two.

Along with the amazingly romantic and relaxing atmosphere that comes with the French Hen, you also have the option of enjoying the beautiful wooded property!

The dining area which is connected to the kitchen is well decorated & very cozy for a dinner for two.

Our favorite item is the French Hen lamp, so fun!

The canopy on this bed is amazing. It’s constructed out of copper, just the same as the canopy for the breakfast bar canopy!

This cottage is warm, inviting and has all of the elements needed for a relaxing weekend, anniversary, honeymooners or an engagement set up!

ABA BMX Sooner NationalsAction Now!By Chris Hultner

Each year the American Bicyclist Association (ABA) rolls into the Lazy E Arena and constructs a monster of a course consisting of huge berms, giant rolling jumps and long mogul sections. The course is purpose-built to test the skills the country’s top BMX athletes. More than a thousand racers from as far away as Los Angeles and New York converged on the Lazy E in late January to participate in the Annual ABA BMX Sooner Nationals.

Bicycle Motocross (BMX) was invented in the early ‘70s in Southern California by kids living in the shadow of a massive Dirt Bike boom. Every kid in that era emulated their favorite Dirt bike racer, but lacked the machinery to do so properly. Naturally they gravitated towards the next best thing—their bicycles—and in empty dirt lots and on hillsides all over the region they constructed makeshift race tracks. Almost over night the sport of BMX was born. Now the sport is big business with races all over the country, and the world, and the top stars enjoy a very comfortable salary.

The coolest attribute about BMX is that it’s an all-inclusive sport. There are competition classes for all ages and skill levels.

At the Lazy E there were racers on the track as young as 4 years old and ones as seasoned as 50. Both boys and girls race and there’s even a Pro Girls class. The sport has come so far in the last 35 years that it’s now part of the Olympic Games.

Our geographical location makes Oklahoma the perfect place for national caliber sporting events. In fact, throughout the year we get everything from World Championship Horse Shows and World

Championship Softball to Amateur National Championship Motocross and National Championship Bull Riding. Economically our state benefits a great deal from these events. Even Edmond gets a leg up from these National events when they are held at venues like the Lazy E, in Guthrie.

During the year the Lazy E plays host to a varied range of sporting events. While Bull Riding and Equine events dominate their schedule, the venue also features Arenacross, Endurocross, Monster Trucks and BMX Racing. Each time the Lazy E hosts one of these National events Edmond’s hotels and restaurants get a boost in sales. It’s a win-win for the city and the state.
