After suffering from continuous back and

shoulder pains for many years I decided

to visit Dr Martin Fruin at Peacehaven

Chiropractic. Martin immediately put me at

ease and took great care in understanding the

history of my problems and what I wanted to

achieve. Martin took time in explaining that

by incorporating chiropractic treatments into

my regular routine could bring me significant

benefits in the shortest possible time frames.

After just 5 visits to Martin I was pain free -

something that I though was impossible after

living with back pain for so many years.

Rapid Fat Loss in 6-Weeks!

Brighton Bootcamp has been a revelation to me. I am

in my mid-fifties and have always been a member of

one or another of the Brighton and Hove gyms for over twenty years now. None of them have provided

the motivation which Brighton Bootcamp has to attend

classes regularly and challenge myself to improve my

level of fitness.I approached my first session with some trepidation,

anticipating military -style trainers barking instructions

as I have witnessed in the local park. This was not the

case. Rick and Paul somehow manage to plan and lead

sessions which ensure that we work very hard, usually

leaving us feeling physically tired but mentally satisfied

at the end of each session. Classes are always friendly

and the camaraderie is good.I feel fitter, stronger and more toned. I have cancelled

my gym membership. Brighton Bootcamp works for me

and I intend to stick with it for as long as possible. Through a difficult period at work and coping with various family problems, it has proved to be a very positive experience.Thank you Rick, Paul and Diana . Please keep up the good work.Wendy R

* * * EdITOR’S NOTE * * *

Well we’ve done it. This is our one year Anniversary issue of Brighton Active and we could not be happier! Firstly, allow us to say a huge thank you to all our partners who we have worked with over the course of the year. We hope that you have found Brighton Active to be the perfect gateway to help promote your business to the whole of Brighton and Hove. And to our avid readers we would like to express our sincere thanks also. Your kind words since our launch has made our job far more rewarding and we’re looking forward to continuing to provide you with an informative and motivational read throughout the whole of 2012.

Before we say goodbye to 2011 though I would like to ask you a question: what has been your greatest health / fitness achievement of the last year? Have a think... Mine has been twofold: conquering my 100KG bench press plateau (now benching 110KG) and increasing my weight by eating clean and training right from 78KG to 85KG. These two achievements were extremely difficult to overcome and will stay in my mind for years to come.

Have you thought of yours yet? If you have I want you to store it. This coming year it pains me to say it but there will be new challenges to overcome, some more difficult than anything 2011 threw at you. When they present themselves, whether they are on the sporting field, in the gym, in the work place or even in your personal life I want you to remember how you dealt with them last year. I’m sure at one

point or another things must have seemed like they weren’t going your way. I know I did. But in the face of adversity you were able to stay motivated and power on. It was tough I’m sure and perhaps you had to dig deeper than you ever thought possible, but you did it.

When these new challenges present themselves this year and you take that moment to think about how you dealt with last year’s hurdles I have no doubt that you will overcome these also, with many of them rewarding you with some fantastic memories.

Whatever your plans then for 2012, or for the next couple of months, you don’t just have our backing but the entire town’s! For Brighton is widely known to be one of the most active towns in the United Kingdom with plenty of activities happening every single day.

In your hands you have everything you need to hit the ground running with some fantastic special offers and discounts helping you along the way. And if you’d like to catch up on any issues from 2011 you may have missed be sure to visit www.brightonactive.com for this and much more...

Enjoy the issue,

Ash

ACTIVE NEwS FOR ACTIVE PEOPlE

We need you! 2012 will see a continued rise in the popularity of CrossFit thanks to its recent partnership deal with Reebok. Olympic lifting, gymnastics and interval training are combined to produce one of the most brutally effective training programmes around. Add fun, friendship and a real sense of community into the mix and you can begin to understand why more and more people are joining CrossFit gyms. This popularity is bringing with it more events for UK CrossFitters to take part in and people are now

PERFORMANCE FOODS

seeing it as a genuine ‘sport’ in which to compete.

As well as catering for beginners at the box, we are also looking to get advanced athletes prepared for next year’s competitions. The Open for the main Reebok CrossFit Games starts in March and a UK London competition is being held in February. If you have been training for a while, have experience of lifting and are looking to push your training forwards then come on down. We now have two ‘Firebreather’ classes to cater for those advanced athletes who we think have the potential to be great competitors.

14 ISSUE #6 JANUARY 2012

I hope you all are well and suitably rested from your Christmas breaks from work, and that you enjoyed the extra family time. I thought I’d start the year but giving you all an update to what’s happening within the world of MP PT. I’m doing this to show that all new years start with a positive step, it just depends on how you want to take it.

If you recall my last editorial I was referring to my company, Forever Fit and the training of the older generation. Since writing that piece I have been fortunate enough to have been recognised for the work I do in this area and was asked to attend various events to promote or advise.

I felt it was a huge honour to have been one of only six people from around the country invited to the FIA (Fitness Industry Association) HQ in London to take part in a focus group meeting to discuss how to specifically approach the training of the older generation and ways in which we can market this training more effectively.

The biggest and most relevant news to our area is the opportunity for myself to work with Brighton and

Hove Albion’s community group via a project called Extra Time. Extra Time is a premier football club and FIA initiative designed to help the older generation of the clubs surrounding communities. Brighton and Hove Albion’s focus is on fall prevention and self confidence building. As it stands if someone is having rehabilitation treatment for a joint replacement or they are classed as a high risk of having a fall, they would receive eight weeks of help from the NHS. The Extra Time initiative extends this help to 12 weeks. It's at this 12 week cut off that my Forever Fit group has been suggested (by the FIA!) as the continuation. Trial training sessions for their current group are being planned for early this year, which will hopefully lead to future work together with them. So watch this space and keep updated with further news on the Brighton Active Facebook page!

In other news, MP PT is going from strength to strength with multiple locations for training hopefully set to be obtained by April. We’ll also be running our successful outdoor ladies training group once again suitable for beginners and

intermediate fitness levels. We all had a great time last year and are looking forward to seeing new and familiar faces alike very soon. With the 5k Race for life being the target, the cost for each group session is still just £5 per head (regardless of age of the participant) with 50% of the takings going to Cancer Research UK via the Race for life event. Start times and dates are yet to be confirmed, but a training group is also planned to be launched for the Worthing R4L event runners.

If you’d like any information on the above please do get in contact with me and I’ll be happy to help. Call 07717 455 144, email [email protected] or visit www.martinpetriepersonaltraining.co.ukYou can also now find me on Twitter at @MartinPetriePT

I for one am planning on using my first steps in 2012 in the very best way possible: lifted with positive hopes and aspirations... I hope you do to.

FINd YOUR FITNESS wITH FREEDOM LITEFreedom Leisure are helping you to tackle new Year weight loss and motivational issues head on with their new Freedom Lite weight management programme

Every year we are faced with the same New Year fitness dilemma - how to get motivated and back in shape after the Christmas party season. Freedom Leisure has thought of a new way to help you get back on track with a holistic approach to weight loss, fitness and healthy living.

Freedom Lite is a 90 minute weekly session held at Freedom Leisure centres in and around Brighton and Hove that tackles all aspects of healthy weight loss and fitness. What sets this programme apart is the 50/50 split between nutritional, lifestyle and motivational advice together with group exercise.

The eight week programme has been developed by weight loss guru Pete Cohen, in association with the fitness experts from Freedom Leisure, to offer a complete approach to getting fit and healthy in 2012. The secret to the course’s success is tackling all the potential factors that could contribute to carrying extra weight. Whether

the problem has grown from a childhood trauma, day-to-day stress, lack of motivation or simply not getting the right physical activity, the course is designed to give you the tools you need to make a change

from within. Not only will you lose the unwanted weight but you’ll keep it off as well!

In the second half of each session you will get the chance to try at least five

different types of group exercise classes over the duration of the course including Aqua Fit, spinning, aerobics, circuit training and kettlebell classes. Once you have all the knowledge and inspiration from completing the initial eight week course you can just drop in to the group exercise classes to join in on the fitness fun and see your new friends.

The eight week Freedom Lite course costs just £80 for members or £100 for non-members. To find your nearest Freedom Leisure centre go to www.freedom-leisure.co.uk or turn to page 28 to find contact information for local sites now.

‘Not only do our customers achieve results,’ says Debbie Reed, Group Customer Service Manager at Freedom Leisure, ‘they also get to know others and the social interaction and support they gain really motivates them to keep going. So far the average weight loss for the first eight weeks has been 12lbs per person! Well done everyone!!’

Sarah Wilson lost three stone with the help of Freedom Lite - ‘After having my second child I was horrified at how my weight and my eating habits had spiralled out of control. I was the biggest comfort eater! Since doing the course I no longer have this relationship with food. The course made me realise that I can find comfort in other things and that I don’t always need to focus on food. I now enjoy the way I feel and look.

TOP gUYAfter such a successful

2011 Guy Sica, founder

of Boxercise Bootcamp,

is going from strength to

strength and has some

big plans for 2012

Since we last spoke to Guy back in August, where we attended one of his very impressive 60 person bootcamps (read this Fitness feature in Issue 04 on our website) Guy has been tinkering to make things bigger and better. We’ll let him take over and tell you all you need to know:

guy Sica: Things are certainly going to get bigger and better in 2012! It’s amazing to think that at the start of last year I myself was running just two boxercise classes per week. Now four extra trainers are on board and we’re hosting a dozen plus weekly classes in several different locations. It’s a great testament to how far Boxercise Bootcamp has come.

Now into 2012 some things have changed: We’re no longer running the large 60 person bootcamps, instead opting to run more classes throughout each day. Now people who previously were working can attend our classes at lunch time or later in the evening. We now run up to three classes each day where we train around 30 people each class. This change has allowed us to help train more people than we were before and make things more convenient for our clients!

This year we’ll continue to run our popular Boxercise, Boxercise Kick and Kettlebell classes, as well as implementing even more variety into our training regimes by introducing some exciting new

classes that as of yet have not been attempted by any bootcamp in Brighton or Hove. We’re really excited about this and recommend you keep your eye on our website at www.boxercisebootcamp.com for more information.

We really do believe we’re taking our bootcamps to the next level compared to some other bootcamps around town. From the little things such as preparing a hand picked music compilation to keep everyone motivated throughout each class, right up to regular home visits to prepare detailed nutrition plans for those who opt for our special fitness packages (ask us more about these!). We really enjoy going that extra step and helping take care of our clients.

It doesn’t stop there though. Having recently merged with another local fitness company, this year we’ll also be launching our new Fitness Weekend’s where we’ll offer people a full weekend of fitness and sport.

Page 17: Brighton Active Issue 06

This year we’ll continue to run our popular Boxercise,

Boxercise Kick and Kettlebell

classes, as well as implementing

even more variety into our

training regimes by introducing some exciting

new classes that as of yet have not

been attempted by any bootcamp in Brighton or Hove

Our new £10 for ten days offer

allows people to come along to as many classes as they want for ten

whole days

There will be cycling, rowing, swimming, cross country runs, functional training and of course plenty of boxercise. We’ll also be providing people with all of their meals throughout the weekend. For anyone looking to really kick start their training and meet some great training partners, this is for them!

2012 will also see an increase in our outdoor bootcamps which we’ll be running in Hove and other secondary locations. These will include kettlebells, tyres, ropes and more, all run by our expert outdoor bootcamp trainers. It’s going to be really fun!

One thing already up and running though (literally) is our new running club taking place every Monday along Hove Seafront. It’s just £2 and includes a warm up, 45 minute run and cool down. We’re currently targeting this run at beginner / intermediate runners but are looking to start a longer weekend run for more advanced runners. The running clubs are great for people who want to run in a group and perhaps get ready for one of

2012’s marathon’s.

Finally, our new £10 for ten days offer allows people to come along to as many classes as they want for ten whole days. This will give people the chance to really see the large variety of exciting classes we have to offer, as well as the different trainers helping you reach your goals.

2012 really is all about taking Boxercise Bootcamp to that next stage of progression. We’ll be

doing things that are going to be extremely effective which our clients are really going to enjoy, and aim to continue breaking away from the norm of other bootcamps by introducing new and exciting training techniques, methods and classes. We can’t wait!

MYZONE is the only way to accurately track and measure your workouts in and out of the gym. All you have to do is wear your own unique MYZONE belt each time you train either in the gym or outside and the belt will record how hard you have trained. Every time you come in to ZT it will wirelessly upload your workouts and award you with MYZONE earned points (MEP's) which are higher if the workout intensity is higher. It also will count how many calories you have burned and what your average heart rate was throughout the session.

MYZONE EFFORT POINTS accumulate for every minute of physical activity you do in the following intensity zones:50-60% = 0.5 MEP per min60-70% = 1 MEP per min70-80% = 1.5 MEPs per min80-90% = 2 MEPs per min90-100% = 2 MEPs per min

MYZONE will benefit everyone who straps up! The ZT gym members have had a huge success with the recent challenge we held, some losing 4/5kg and 5% in body-fat! The competition saw 50 of our members compete to earn the most MEP's in 4 weeks to earn some great prizes! Nadja Sennhenn was the top woman to earn the most

ONE MORE MEPKatie Price has also been hard at work with Sol Gilbert and the SGUT Trainers: "I needed to get back to ZT because I have tried other trainers and no one else pushes me as hard as Sol Gilbert and the SGUT Trainers. Sol introduced me to the MYZONE belt and it has seriously made me up my game. Now every time I train I want to beat my last score.“

All Personal Trainers & outdoor training camps: Your clients can

wear a MYZONE belt while you train them and

when they train on their own. You can then log in to

their account and see how many MEP’s they

earned, calories they burned and what their maximum

heart rate was! All they have to do is walk in to ZT Fitness wearing their belt to wirelessly upload their data.

Members of other gyms can still train at your chosen facility and just come to ZT to upload your data between workouts. Your belt will hold approximately 16 hours of data at any time.

points: “Training with MYZONE brings out your competitive nature, making you push yourself that extra bit further. Plus having people chasing you for MEPS motivates you that little bit more.”

Sol gilbert Ultimate Training (SgUT):Elliott Abboudi and

Jack Abboudi have been training at ZT with SGUT Ultimate Trainers, Sol Gilbert and Jack Laing. Since training with the SGUT Trainers they have lost a combined weight of 30KG’s and to really up their game Sol Gilbert and Jack Laing decided to set a challenge to really put the MYZONE belts to the test! Out of the two brothers, who ever earned the least MEPs in four weeks would lose the competition and their trainer would have to complete a forfeit. Jack Abboudi and SGUT trainer Jack Laing ended up victorious with Abboudi saying, “I have been pushed to the max by Jack Laing from SGUT. Wearing my MYZONE belt has helped to motivate me as I can see how many MEP's I'm earning as I train. We set targets for each session and I pushed myself to the limit.”

As the only fitness facility on the Southcoast to house the MYZOnE state of the art fitness technology, ZT Fitness are changing the way you’ll train forever

NO STR NgS ATTACHEd

Local Freedom Leisure sites are now offering pay & play badminton sessions that guarantee you a partner to play with each and every time

Badminton is a fun sport that anyone can play, and is also a great way to keep fit and healthy. Getting back into your fitness routine after the Christmas holidays can be a challenge, so taking up a new sport can be just what is needed for you to kick start your New Year health drive! Competitive sports are great at providing motivation, so two Brighton & Hove City Council Leisure Centres, managed by Freedom Leisure, are offering weekly badminton sessions that guarantees you a partner to play with!

The King Alfred Leisure Centre and Moulsecoomb Community Leisure Centre are both running the No Strings Badminton pay & play sessions every week. All the essential equipment is supplied or available for hire, as well as there being a guaranteed partner to play with who’ll have some useful hints and tips if you want them. This is not organised coaching, just a fun and social environment for you to enjoy yourselves in and work up a sweat. There are also no joining fees or commitments, you can just turn up and be sure of a game!

‘Everyone loves the pay & play approach,’ says Richard Bagwell, Group Sports Development Manager at Freedom Leisure. ‘The sessions are fun and everyone has a good laugh - it has become a real social event for some of our regulars. Come and join us to knock a shuttle around one evening - we guarantee you a good game!’

Playing badminton will help you tone your upper body, lower body and core. It’s a fantastic cardiovascular workout and can also help improve balance, agility and explosive speed. On top of the physical benefits, badminton is a real mental challenge - tactical awareness and technique are essential if you want to win.

Players of all abilities are welcome, so whether you’re a dab hand but need some new competition or simply fancy trying out a new and exciting sport, head down to King Alfred or Moulsecoomb Community leisure centres and get involved.

No Strings Badminton costs from just £3 per session. Find out more at www.nostringsbadminton.co.uk or go to www.freedom-leisure.co.uk to find your nearest Freedom Leisure centre. You can also turn to page 28 to find contact information for local sites now.

When did FlickFit first launch?FlickFit launched in 2008, working out of a gym in Portsmouth where I mainly trained ladies looking to lose weight or shape up. I also successfully trained men to increase their strength and size through resistance training. Men don’t always initially think about working with a female trainer, but it’s my job to adapt my approach. I then spent a year working as a Manager for a community weight-loss programme commissioned by the NHS. This was group-based exercise with 1-1 dietary advice. After this I returned to my roots here in Brighton and began personal training and running outdoor circuit classes.

Tell me more about FlickFit’s specialities...FlickFit specialises in weight-loss programmes for men and women. When I first entered the fitness industry there was virtually no nutritional training available so I’ve had to undergo a lot of further study in order to offer professional advice. I have a REPS Level 4 Obesity and Diabetes Management qualification and my experience

working within the NHS has helped me massively. It’s my goal to help my clients to add up all the small changes they make and to make a lifetime commitment to their health - not just some quick fix.

Do you just offer weight-loss programmes? No not at all! I do have some diet-only clients, some who just exercise, I also do programme writing for those with more experience. What I do with each client differs depending on their needs. In spring and summer I run Outdoor Circuits on Hove Lawns in the evening to encourage those who want a drop-in approach.

Where do you work out of?I train at a private gym in Hove, or outdoors. I’m even happy to train people in their own homes - whatever works for you! I have a variety of kit that I bring along

meaning that you can get a different workout every time!

What is your personal approach to a healthy life?I believe in a balance between resistance training and CV training - you need to strengthen your heart AND your muscles! Adequate nutrition for anyone undertaking exercise is essential - you feel so much better too! My own motto is ‘Play hard, train harder’ - I really do believe in life balance. Everyone can find a bit of time to be fit and healthy.

FEATURE

30 ISSUE #6 JANUARY 2012

A CAll TO ARMSHappy New Year to one and all and I hope you enjoyed the first issue of Brighton Active for 2012.

I’d like to finish off this issue by returning to what I had said in my earlier editorial feature in this issue on page 14, about taking steps into the New Year.

I’m looking at taking the first steps in 2012 in the most positive way possible, but this hasn’t always been the case. For years I felt that linking a new year with a new start was a complete waste of time and energy. If we are always pushing for the best of ourselves all the time then what is there exactly that we should have to change? Last year though I decided to take a huge step forward and broke my normal safety pattern. In doing so, I have had one of the most rewarding years of my life. Not only in my work, but in my family and my relationship too, finding the woman I see my future with. I couldn’t be happier at this single point in time.

I put this down to two main reasons: The first being my previous lack of confidence in myself. Being broken from these chains has made me take more positive risks and in doing so has helped me move my life forward. The second and biggest reason is the people I have around me. With their support (which I have always had, just never really realised) I have felt strong enough to take these risks, knowing that they are there to back me up with all the help I’ll need. They may not have all the answers, but I’ve learnt that life really is about finding the answers yourself.

What I’m getting at here is that we all have something we want to do, somewhere that we see ourselves being, but for some reason we hold ourselves back from even trying. Some of you are go getters and this wouldn’t even be relevant, but to the majority of us it is.

What I have planned for MP Personal Training this year is relevant to all, even the go getters. I’m planning on enlightening my client’s minds and bodies with regards to how to get to their hidden goals, breaking their chains and helping to boost their self belief and confidence in the hope that they will then be more confident taking risks and moving forward. All by taking them out of their current comfort zone and supporting the changes every single step of the way. Just like I did, with the support I had at the start of 2011.

We all make our own futures. All of our futures will be great but just think about who actually makes your future happen. It is you. In 2012 be a more positive version of yourself. Your family, friends and peers are all there to support you. Take that step this year and make it count.

Good luck to all,

Martin

Martin Petrie is the owner of MP Personal Training. To learn more about how he can help you in 2012 call 07717 455 144, email [email protected] or visit www.martinpetriepersonaltraining.co.uk. You can also read all of Martin’s previous features online at www.brightonactive.com
