Volume 25 Number 1 (No. 121) Spring 2009 Page 2 German Newspapers in Baltimore

On February 22, 2009 Baltimore County Genealogy Society speaker was Dr. Gary Ruppert, MD. He is a native Baltimorean. His family settled here about 200 years ago. He has been on their trail since 1971 and during that time he has learned much about the German-American community in 19th-century Baltimore City. He is author of a number of papers published in the Maryland Genealogical Society Bulletin as well as the 1995 winner of the NGS Family History Writing Contest. His association with MdGenSoc began in 1972. He became webmaster of that organization in 2001, vice president in 2003, president in 2005. Currently he is co-editor of the Maryland Genealogical Society Journal. Dr. Ruppert recently published a book in two volumes, “The German Correspondent, Baltimore Maryland 1879-1883”.

Dr Ruppert did a PowerPoint presentation but provided no handouts. The editor took notes and did some additional research on the subject matter. Permission was granted from Dr. Ruppert

The average size of the German newspapers was 4 pages plus the pages were much larger then the normal Sun newspaper printed today. What can you find in a newspaper? Advertisements of family business Death Registers Local Matters Letters Marriage

Society News Death Notices Obituaries

Gary showed some case studies on information that can be discovered in the newspaper 1. Native Village was listed in the Obituary Notice 2. Date of Marriage was listed in the Obituary notice and marriage announcement 3. Political Boss 4. Scots Irish Florist Advertisement

To read the newspaper you will need to study the German Script, learn to recognize surnames, use a German English Dictionary to translate words. May need to hire a professional, friends & students or use transcribe@ yahoogroup.com. The German Studies Center at Maryland Historical Society has a digitalization project for the newspaper Der Deutsche Correspondent. Dr. Ruppert mentioned the following newspaper in his speech. Bayerisches Wochenblatt 1848 (Bavarian Weekly Paper) Die Biene von Baltimore 1873-1882 (The Baltimore Bee) Der Neue Correspondent 1869-1869 (The New Correspondent) Die Katholische Volkszeitung 1864-1919 (The Catholic People's Paper) Marylandische Deutsche Zeitung 1820s (Maryland German Newspaper) German Baltimore Herald 1850s Baltimore Volks Freund 1879 (Baltimore People's Friend) Der Demokrat 1843-1845 (The Democrat) Der Wecker 1851-1880s (The Alarm or Waker-Upper!) Der Deutsche Correspondent 1848-1918 (The German Correspondent) Das Baltimore Journal 1882-1913 (The Baltimore Journal The Lutheran Observer 1831- 19?? (Minister & Spouse information, Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg) Microfilm sources for reading German newspapers is the Enoch Pratt Central Library in Baltimore City, Maryland Historical Society and Library of Congress.

End of notes from Dr. Gary Ruppert topic.

Volume 25 Number 1 (No. 121) Spring 2009 Page 3

“The general principles just enunciated are strikingly illustrated by the earliest German newspapers of Baltimore. For more than a century after the founding of the city in the year 1729 no German newspaper was able to establish itself firmly, and the various attempt that were made from time to time to found such a periodical publication always soon ended in complete failure-sometimes after printing of only a few issues.

1. Die Baltimore Post , 1788-1799 The earliest date that anyone is known to have hitherto claimed for a German newspaper published in Baltimore appears to be the year 1780.

2. Henry Dulheuer’s German Newspaper, 1786 3. Der Baltimore Bote, 1795”

“All in all, we know the titles of twenty-five German newspapers that appeared in Baltimore during the fours decades between 1820 and 1860; of all of these, only the Correspondent and the Wecker enjoyed a deep or listing influence.” Refer to page 265 “His newspaper the, Correspondent, was the paper with the greatest influence on the Germans in Baltimore; it lasted longer than any of the other German newspapers in Maryland. Only a few numbers of the Correspondent from the time before the Civil War are in existence. The earliest available number is that of September 7, 1942. The Society for the History of the Germans in Maryland owns eight numbers for the years 1842-1843, and two of the weekly editions of the Correspondent for 1851. (The weekly edition was introduced in 1848.) The Maryland Historical Society has one number from 1846, the Enoch Pratt library has one odd number from the years 1856 to 1859 and the Maryland Historical Society has a complete set from January to June 1858.” Refer to258 The index under newspaper is a list of many Maryland German newspapers, which is a great source for additional reference material.

Genealogical Tip of the Quarter Organization for Genealogists Reduce your genealogy clutter. Learn how to get those mounds of papers, books and scraps organized and keep them that way with these organization systems and tips for using files, folders, binders and your computer to keep your family tree organized. Piles of copies of old records, printouts from genealogy Web sites, and letters from fellow genealogy researchers are sitting in piles on the desk, in boxes, and even on the floor. Some are even mixed in with bills and with children's school papers. Does this sound familiar? Are you as engulfed in papers as I am? Believe it or not, the solution is as simple as finding an organizational system that suits your needs and research habits, and then making it work. It's not exactly as simple as it sounds, but it is doable and will ultimately help to keep you from spinning your wheels and duplicating research. Which Filing System Is Best? Ask a group of genealogists how they organize their files, and you're likely to get as many different answers as genealogists. There are a number of popular genealogy organization systems, including binders, notebooks, files, etc., but there truly is no individual system which is "best" or "correct." Ultimately the most important consideration in setting up your filing system is that it must fit your personal style. The best organization system is always the one that you will use. The trick is to develop a filing system that will enable to easily lay your fingers on any of these documents at any time. Commonly used genealogical filing systems include: By Surname - All papers for an individual surname are filed together. By Couple or Family - All papers related to a husband and wife or family unit are filed together. By Family Line - All papers related to a specific family line are filed together. Many genealogists begin by starting with four such ancestral lines - one for each of their grandparents. By Event - All papers related to a specific event type (i.e. birth, marriage, census, etc.) are filed together.

Volume 25 Number 1 (No. 122/123 Summer/Fall 2009 Page 2 City Archives: Quest For Historic Answers By Don Torres The Archives of Baltimore City, long a bane of the history-minded visiting its ram-shackle site down the slope from Druid Hill Park, has moved into new digs. This step-child of City government is now in the former Southern Steel Shelving Co. building at 27th and Mathews Streets, a block east of Greenmount Avenue. City Archivist Rebecca Gunby said the site is a major improvement, with more storage capacity and a search room for patrons. But the 40,000 square feet of leased space has neither climate control nor on-site visitor parking, and the safety of surrounding streets is an issue. Gunby noted that the earliest City archives date to 1797; a year after Baltimore was incorporated. Her Office of Archives and Records Management is part of the Department of Legislative Reference and is responsible for categorizing and preserving the City’s records— maps, laws and ordinances, education, public works, transportation, fire and public safety, recreation and parks, properties bought and sold, port development, industry. They carry the story of the city, but much of that history is hidden within a maze.. While records management of the dusty boxes requires stronger financial support and commitment from the mayor and City Council than have been forthcoming, prospects are brightening. Archivist Gunby has forged a partnership with the Maryland State Archives, under the leadership of State Archivist Dr. Edward C. Papenfuse. Although the State has no official role in the City Archives, Papenfuse was instrumental in creating a website to serve as a prototype for complete access to City records. The site, http://baltimorecity-history.net/, already makes accessible to researchers a number of records and guides to maps, block plat books, and research on the public records. Papenfuse includes this cautionary: “Until recently, and for over nearly twenty years, the permanent public records of Baltimore City were permitted to lapse into a horrendous state of decay and disarray, even undoing in some measure, the initial careful work undertaken by the first two City Archivists, Richard Cox and William LeFurgy, with National Historical Publications and Records grants in the 1980s.” Gunby’s goal is that all City records be properly preserved, categorized, scanned, and available to researchers on line, with on-site computers to assist researchers. To start, if funding permits, a consultant would be hired to assess current records management, and needs. Papenfuse said volunteers could also do much to make the records more accessible, especially if the City and State together are able to provide a Web presence. Gunby urged those interested in volunteering or donating to the cause to contact the State Archives since the City has no means of accepting contributions. The State Archives can be reached through its website www.msa.md.gov or through Papenfuse’s office by phone, 410-260-6400, or e-mail [email protected]. Donations can be made to Friends of the Maryland State Archives, 350 Rowe Blvd., Annapolis MD 21401. Donations are tax exempt and should state “for the benefit of sustaining the web presence, and improving access to, and care of, Baltimore City Although Papenfuse praises the new physical site, his dream is one day to see the City Archives as a component in the majestic former Scottish Rite Masonic Temple at Charles and 39th Streets. For now, they are at 2615 Mathews Street, 21218. Phone 410.396.3884-5 for visits by appointment only: Tues-Friday, 9AM-3PM. Should funds go to Archives in hard times? The answer may be found in a quote from the Spanish-born American author, philosopher, and poet George Santayana, 1863-1952: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Above Article: “Baltimore Gaslight – Newsletter of the Baltimore Historical Society” Volume 8 Number 1 Spring 2009 page 1 column 2 and continued on page 3 column 1and 2.

Volume 25 Number 1 (No. 122/123 Summer/Fall 2009 Page 3 About the Baltimore City Historical Society BCHSBHCS Mission The goal of the Baltimore City Historical Society is to cultivate and promote the history and diversity of Baltimore City. The Society works with Baltimore historians to sponsor programs on City history and with museums and universities to support their collesctions of historical materials. The Website http://www.historicbaltimore.org/We intend for this website to be a home - a gathering place - for everyone interested in the City's history, as well as an inclusive source of information about City historical activities and resources. The site is still under development, and we welcome additions, suggestions, and alterations. Please email us to let us know what you think! They hope you will want to become involved in the many activities and plans in store for the new and dynamic Baltimore City Historical Society. It's easy to become a member. And, there are many volunteer opportunities, as well as internship possibilities. Just print the membership brochure and mail the membership form to The Baltimore City Historical Society c/o Maryland Historical Society 201 West Monument Street Baltimore, Maryland 21201 Please phone us 410 685-3750, extension 379, email us at [email protected]. The Tickner-Mears Transcription Project The project of transcribing these funeral home records is much larger than any of us thought. The Maryland Genealogical Society has decided that we will concentrate on producing the high-quality information that our members and other genealogists have come to depend upon, rather than rushing some materials into production without proper proofreading. As a result, we will be able to produce a transcription of only a subset of the large, multi-volume set this year. The hope is that we can finish this first phase in time to have it available at the time of the Society's 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner. Many thanks to the following individuals who have worked on the transcription process: Gary B. Ruppert, MD; Patty Shawker; John Siemon; Pat Orr; Ann Smith; Isabelle Board-Obert; Ron Leach; Judith Hallfrisch; and Linda Greenwell. We have several new volunteers: Ann Marsiglia, Deb Hoffman, and Dolores Soul. From the editor: I know Dru mentioned this in her President's Message and it is discussed in the minutes, but volunteers are still needed for the transcription of the Tickner and Mears Funeral Homes records. If you would like to volunteer, please send E-mail to me at [email protected]. Article from the “The Newsletter of the Maryland Genealogical Society” Volume XXXVII No. 3 July 2009. Pratt Library Databases The Enoch Pratt Free Library has developed a collection Internet-based databases that could be very helpful for your genealogical research. Many of these databases are available from your home computer; simply use the number on the back of your library card to gain access. The databases include Heritage Quest, through which you can find censuses, Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Applications, Freedman's Bank records, the Periodical Source Index, books, and the U.S. Serial Set. You can also access a Historical Newspaper database

Baltimore Sun Newspaper The Historical Baltimore Sun is now online for free on the Baltimore County Library website, under newspapers. Listed as a new feature with years 1837 to 1985 included, I found that it only goes from 1837 to 1945. Death notices are included, and it is searchable. For those who do not have a Baltimore County Library card, and who live in Maryland and have a library card from another county, they merely have to visit any Baltimore County library and register to use the online services at home. The last time I looked, the historical Baltimore Sun online at the Pratt Library website included the years 1837 to 1901. Submitted by Ross Smith a member of BCGS Records of the Post Office Department, 1773-1971 Baltimore County Genealogical Society on March 22, 2008 had Patricia O'Brien Shawker, CG as our speaker. Patricia O’Brien Shawker's primary genealogical interests are in Maryland records and federal records at the National Archives. Patty was born in Washington, D.C. and has been able to spend much time developing her expertise in federal records. She is a member of the APG, BCG, NEHGS, NGS, the Maryland Genealogical Society, and the NSDAR. She serves as Treasurer of the National Genealogical Society and the Assistant Director of the National Institute on Genealogical Research. Millions of our ancestors worked for the Post Office Department. This lecture will discuss the records, the indexes, and the genealogical information. Many are textual; however, the more useful ones are on microfilm. Patricia O'Brien Shawker has given permission to reprint her handouts. Post Office Records on National Archives Web site http://www.archives.gov/research/post-offices/ has the following topics that maybe of interest. Records of Postmaster Appointments Records of Post Office Locations Other Microfilmed Records Post Office Names Where to Find these Records For More Information Post office records may deliver interesting information to the genealogical researcher seeking more information about an ancestor or an ancestor's community. Microfilmed records include postmaster appointment records and records showing the location of post offices.

Volume 25 Number 4 (No. 123) P.O. Box 10085 – Towson, MD 21285-0085 Winter 2009

EDITORS NOTES Kenneth E. Zimmerman, Editor

This Notebook has seven major articles

1. New and Free Daughters of American Revolution (DAR) Online Databases. The DAR has added its Genealogical Research System to its public website. Article was from Eastman‘s Online Genealogy Newsletter.

2. Article on “Still More About Backups” from Eastman‘s Online Genealogy Newsletter. When was the last time you backed up your database or files plus tested the back-up?

3. Need someone to Find a Grave? What is Find A Grave? Find A Grave is a resource for finding the final resting place of family, friends, and 'famous' individuals. With millions of names and photos, it is an invaluable tool for the genealogist and family history buff. Find A Grave memorials can contain rich content including photos, biographies and dates. Visitors can leave 'virtual flowers' on the memorials they visit, completing the online cemetery experience.

4. Angela McGhie was the speaker at BCGS on 27 September 2009. The topic was “Finding Original Records on the Internet. She has granted permission to reprint her handout. On The Internet. Records are being digitized and put online at an ever increasing pace. Come discover which original records are now available and where to find them on the Internet. We will look at census, vital, land, military and immigration records, along with maps and newspapers

5. Baltimore County Administration Accounts Index 1883-1885, Liber T.P. No. 10 beginning 20 Jun 1883 and ending 01 Jul 1885.. This is the ninth of a series for the Notebook. Our member Carol Porter compiled the index. We greatly appreciate Carol’s work and look forward for her to continue this project.

Genealogical Tip of the Quarter The Maryland State Archives has the following original records: Baltimore City Court of Common Pleas (Marriage Record) 1865-1885 C214. Marriage records are in a log book and not in date sequence. They are entered by the date the marriage was filed. Some records were filed one year later. This is a prime example to continue researching for a period of times past the event date. You must understand the filing sequence or listing pattern. Records may not be in the same year as the event. Sometimes we complain we find no research after going to the Archives or Library. Have an attitude that negative research can be positive research when it gives you new a new or another resource to search.

The following article is from Eastman’s Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 2009 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. Information about the newsletter is available at http://www.eogn.com. New and Free DAR Online Databases The following announcement was written by the Daughters of the American Revolution: After nearly a decade of scanning, indexing, and other behind-the-scenes work by DAR members and employees, the Daughters of the American Revolution is pleased to announce the availability of the DAR Genealogical Research System (GRS) on our public website. Here are the direct links: http://www.dar.org/library/online_research.cfm or www.dar.org (and click on the Library button at the top, then the second tab in the left-hand column). The GRS is a growing collection of databases that provide access to many materials collected by the DAR over the past 119 years. Included in this collection of databases is the GRC National Index which has been available to researchers for the past few years. There are still some kinks we’re working out here and there. When you go to the link above, you will find several tabs that will enable searching in the various databases: Ancestor – established DAR Revolutionary War Ancestors and basic information about them with listings of the applications submitted by descendants who joined the DAR [updated daily] Member – limited access to information on deceased/former DARmembers – not current members. Descendants – index of generations in applications between the DAR member and the Revolutionary War ancestor. There is much eighteenth and nineteenth-century information here. [ongoing indexing project] GRC (Genealogical Records Committee National Index) – every name index to 20,000 typescript volumes (some still being indexed) of genealogical records such as cemeteries, Bibles, etc. This index is not limited to the period of the American Revolution at all. Resources: In particular, the digitized DAR Library Revolutionary Pension Extract Card Index and the Analytical Index Cards. Other information sources will be coming in the near future, mostly relating to Revolutionary War service, bibliographies, Forgotten Patriots (updates), etc. Read the introductions to these to learn why these are both important genealogical indexes. For example, the Rev. War pension index includes the names of people mentioned in those pensions that were abstracted (not just the pensioner or widow)!!!!] Library Catalog – our book, periodical, and manuscript holdings Each of these has interrelated content, and a description of each is given more fully on the website. You will notice restricted information in many search results. This is the result of a concerted effort to protect the identity of our members while providing historical genealogical information to researchers. The national numbers of members (without the names of living members) given in the search

results are needed to order copies of applications and supplemental applications. They do not lead online researchers to any other information about the member. Do you have comments, questions, or corrections to this article? If so, please post your words at http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2009/11/new-and-free-dar-online-databases.html and you may see comments from other newsletter readers at the same address. The following article is from Eastman’s Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 2009 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re- published here with the permission of the author. Information about the newsletter is available at http://www.eogn.com. Note: The DAR takes requested for photocopies b fax, post mail (not email, see the Search Services page for more information. Still More About Backups In a comment on the end of the recent “(+) Life Expectancy of Audio Tapes and VHS Video Tapes versus CD and DVD Disks” Plus Edition article. Aa newsletter reader asked, “Do you suggest that I copy all my old 3 and 1/2 inch floppies that I have backed up from my earlier research from my hard drive. Do you know of life expectancies for these?” I thought I would share my answer here. Floppy disks have a RELIABLE life expectancy of a year or two. My experience has been that they usually last longer but you can’t depend on that. If you store dozens of floppy disks, at least some of them will lose data within 2 or 3 years. The only reliable way to store digital data is to do two things simultaneously: 1. Make MULTIPLE copies to different kinds of media and then store those copies in different locations 2. Copy all your backups to new media frequently, such as every few weeks Luckily, that is easy to do. For instance, I make most of my backups to hard disks that are kept spinning and in use in different computers. Some of those hard disks are here in my home and others are in remote data centers in other parts of the country. Most of my backups are less than 2 hours old. Some are 24 hours old. It’s all done by software whether I am at the computer or not. Many of the backups are made while I am sleeping although the 2-hour backups are made whether I am at home or not. (I leave my primary computer powered on and running 24 hours a day.) In addition, I do keep some additional backups on CD and DVD disks but I don’t depend on those alone. I consider them to be secondary backups; I only use CD and DVD disks to store

secondary copies of information that is already backed up elsewhere. The CD and DVD disks are always thrown away after 30 days and are replaced with new backups. In my (admittedly biased) opinion, any backup that is more than 30 days old is potentially worthless. Next, I also TEST my backups. I don’t trust anything that is stored on a computer. Once a month, I restore a file or two from some of my backups just to make sure that the backups are still being made regularly and are capable of being restored. I always do this on the first day of the month, as that is an easy date to remember. Many times I have heard or read the comment of “Well, I thought it was making regular backups!” That statement is usually made in the middle of some disastrous situation. Have you tested your backups? FIND A GRAVE A man was in here today looking for a grave for one of his fellow members of Find A Grave. Members contribute and also help each other all over the country (and the world) to find graves in locations where they can not visit personally. http://www.findagrave.com/ I thought you would find it interesting.
