Welcome to season 2012/13, the year of the nationals... The South Australian Sharpie Association would like to officially welcome you all to the 2012/13 Sharpie sailing season. This year is going to be a very busy one, for one big obvious reason; the 70th Australian Sharpie Championships, to be held at Brighton & Seacliff Yacht Club this summer. A lot of preparation has already gone in to making sure that this Nationals is bigger and better than anything before and we hope that you are all excited for it. The committee has also planned a very exciting lead up to the nationals with 15 total elimination heats (6 of which will be state heats) at three separate state championship weekends to prepare us all for the regatta. The season will run similar to previous years with the inclusion of Victor Harbor and Pt Vincent weekends still on the program. The only difference however, is that the Largs Bay and Adelaide Weekends have swapped, meaning we will sail at Adelaide before the nationals and finish our season at Largs. The Sharpie Association will be very active on Social Media this season as well, so make sure you “like” our Facebook page and “follow” us on Twitter for all the immediate news and information as it happens. With the nationals on the horizon and a big few months ahead, we urge everyone to get involved with the Sharpies for this year, tell your friends and help out in any way possible, because it’s all the little things together that make the big things happen! Sharpie Frostbite Regatta 2012By Harry Fisher

15 Boats from all over the country arrived at the Port Lincoln Yacht Club on the June Long Weekend for what was to be yet another cold, but enjoyable Frostbite Regatta.

Historically, Frostbite has always been a sharpie weekend, however over time we have seen it grow in to a regatta for any class. Over the years we have seen International Cadets, Herons, 420’s, Fireballs, Lasers and even a Cherub, and this year was no exception w i t h m a n y s a i l o r s o f a l l a g e s participating in the regatta.

It all began on the Friday night at the yacht club as it always does, boozy as usual. And it was really great to see some of our old sharpie fossils soaking up the atmosphere and making it out on to the water for the regatta. Blokes like Geoff Kohler, Paul Giadresco and Michael “Jimbob” Cronin just to name a few.

Shout outs also go to our interstate Frostbite regulars, The Vita Brevis boys

from WA, David, Brendan and Chris as well as Marc Ablett who has made it over from Canberra for the third consecutive year, a great effort.

A total of 3 races back to back were sailed on each day. The Saturday gave us some fluctuating winds, and cold weather, which in conjunction with the after affects of a few welcoming beers the night before made it a little difficult to keep a high level of concentration. At the conclusion of day 1, there was one boat that really shone through, sharpie legend Robbie Deussen in Rage Factor along with faithful forwardhand Andy Dyer and sheethand Mark Ingerson won all three races and took a comfortable lead ahead of the rest of the fleet. Jacko, James Davis and James Hughes in Bread Run sailed in to some good form gaining two seconds and a seventh, while Snoady, Kymbo and Gus Bruce in the fresh-out-o f - t h e - m o u l d B e e r N u t s s a i l e d consistently with a second, fourth and a fif th to be in th i rd p lace. Some commendable efforts to the Vita Brevis boys with a 3rd in Race 1, Kirky with a

3rd in Race 2 and Bronte Flint with a 3rd in Race 3.

Sunday morning there were a few hungover faces, but nothing a spot of bacon and eggs and a sail couldn’t fix. The second day of sailing was underway, with some slightly stronger breeze and three more races to cap off the series.

Fritz, Dipper and Ingo continued their dominance and won the regatta with two more firsts and a third, Jacko and the boys continued their good form in to day 2 winning heat 5 and two seconds in the other races and the Beer Nuts clinched third overall with a third, a second and a fifth on the final day.

Special mention must go out to the lads on Nightmare, ACT import Marc “Gary” Ablett, Brad “Curro” Luders and Kym Flint who were leading race 5 all day until they got pipped at the post by the top three finishers of the regatta.

3rd place on handicap went to sharpie legend Geoff Kohler on board Hot & Dusty with Shannon Doble and Zac Willis, 2nd on handicap went to the boys on Nightmare who sailed an excellent regatta and well done again to Marc for

making the trip over and 1st on handicap went to local junior Mark Barwick sailing Dozenmatter with Harry Fisher and Luke Stephens. It’s really great to see more young guys getting in to sharpies and we hope that they continue to sail them in the future.

The club put on another fantastic presentation evening, with delicious food, great service and plenty of drinks to go round. The night continued in to the local pubs and clubs, with the sharpie sailors partying the night away as only sharpie sailors can do. An honorable mention must go to Brad Luders who dropped the dacks during Eagle Rock at the Tasman, only to realise he wasn’t wearing jocks.

Overall, an excellent regatta once again with another seamless effort from Phil Kelly and his team. The Port Lincoln Yacht Club never cease to amaze with their delicious food, competitive sailing and lovely people, I’m sure we will continue to see the Frostbite Regatta grow even more in years to come. Thanks again Lincoln!

FROSTBITE!

A SHARPIE LEGEND: ROLLY TASKERIn this month’s edition of “On The Fly!”, we pay tribute to one of The true Sharpie legends who sadly

passed away aged 86 on June 22nd, 2012. Our thoughts go out to the Tasker Family.

An excerpt From WA Sharpies Blog; Wednesday 27 June 2012...“One of the great members and contributors to sailing has died aged 86, Rolly

Tasker passed away on Friday June 22nd in his Mandurah home. Rolly was a legend in the local sailing community and a silver medalist in the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games in the 12m2 Sharpie Class.

Rolly was inducted into WA's Hall of Champions in 1986 and the Sport Australian Hall of Fame in 1996. In 1956 he won a silver medal sailing a Sharpie at the Melbourne Games, soon after he won the first world championship in the Flying Dutchman class. Rolly went on to win many championships in his dinghy career before moving to ocean racing. Between 1969 and 1985 his yachts, all called Siska, dominated the competition on the west coast. Rolly became a Member of the Order of Australia in 2006 for his services to sailing.

Rolly established the successful Tasker sailmaking business in North Fremantle before operating a large operation in Phuket, Thailand. In 2008 the Australian Sailing Museum was opened in Mandurah by the Tasker's, the museum has since become a local tourist attraction.”

The SA Sharpie Association passes on their sincere condolences to the Tasker family and we thank Rolly for the strong influence he has had on our class.
