Trussville Daybreak Rotary Club Reads with Students to celebrate Dr. Seuss Day

On Wednesday, March 9, 2016, Trussville Daybreak Rotary Club "Readers" visited with students from seven classrooms at Paine Elementary School. The Rotary Readers presented each student with a Dr. Seuss book to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday. Each teacher received a Dr. Seuss book for their classroom library. The Rotary Readers were dressed for the day in Dr. Seuss character aprons and hats. Each teacher received a special Dr. Seuss apron made by Rotary Reader David Cork's wife.

Trussville City Schools would also like to thank Trussville Daybreak Rotary Readers for visiting each Wednesday during the school year to read with our young students.

HTMS 6th grader Sara Kate Potter in Montgomery

HTMS student Sarah Kate had a wonderful learning experience as a Senate Page for Senator Quinton Ross of Montgomery. She sat in on committee meetings (she was in the meeting with Del Marsh on Tuesday and got to hear all of the teachers speak against the proposed PREP Act), paged in the chamber during session, toured the capitol, met several Senators, saw Governor Bentley, and met Lt. Governor Kay Ivey. They taught the pages the processes of a bill and how it gets passed. Although she was in the Senate, they announced when the teacher pay raise was approved in the House of Representatives.



UAB Science and Engineering Fair Results for Hewitt-Trussville High School

Congratulations to the following HTHS Engineering Academy students who competed at the UAB Science and Engineering Fair on Saturday, March 5th.

• The team of Bin Tran and Christian Golding had an honorable mention in Environmental Engineering for their project to monitor the nests of sea turtles.

• The Abby Knight placed third in Environmental Engineering for the removal of arsenic from ground drinking water in third world countries.

• The team of Amanda Green, Kaitlin Silverwood, and Emma Burford finished 1st in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering for their project of adaptive technology for individuals who lack fine motor skills.

• The team of Travis Gunn and Eli Greene not only finished 1st in Energy and Transporation for designing a trekking pole that produces electrical power when hiking.

• Travis and Eli were also an overall winner at the fair. They beat out over 300 projects for top honors and they will be traveling to Phoenix, Ariziona to compete at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. In Phoenix, they will compete against 2,000 teams from over 75 countries on a worldwide stage. This Science fair is commonly known as the ‘super bowl’ of science fairs.

• These teams will also compete at the State of Alabama Science and Engineering Fair at the University of Huntsville on April 2nd and 3rd. This competition will involve the top overall winners from each regional fair.

HTHS Culinary Team are Finalist for National Culinary Competition

Congratulations to the HTHS Culinary Team!

The Team was selected as a finalist in the NASA HUNCH National Culinary Competition to be held in Houston, TX at the Johnson Space Center. Their recipe is Butternut Squash Puree.

Paine Elementary Learns Paine Elementary teachers Jaimye Waits, Allie Aldrich, Beth McKinley and Kelly McGough attend

the Lester Laminack Conference at the UAB Spring Symposium. The focus was on his book, Writers are Readers: Flipping Reading Instruction into Writing Opportunities.

Simply stated: reading supports writing, and writing supports reading, though teachers often separate the two. Lester Laminack shared how any reading strategy can be flipped for writing

instruction.



Paine Elementary Marketplace Did you see the crowds at Paine Elementary after school last week?

It was Paine Elementary Marketplace!Students planned, prepared, and ran their own businesses as part of the GaTE Program.

It was a great success with lots of creative and ingenious ideas! The students of today are our leaders of tomorrow.

The Paine Elementary Addition is underway! If you have been to Paine Elementary in the last month, you have noticed the new addition is well underway. As Trussville City Schools moves to three K-5 elementary schools, the Paine Campus is undergoing construction to connect the two buildings. The new addition will include an area for administrative wing and front office as well as a new library that will serve as the hardened area for the new tornado shelter. The new addition is expected for completion by July 15.

Cahaba Elementary Renovation is coming right along! The renovation and new construction at the historic school building is coming right along. New windows are being installed across the front of the historic project. As the builder moved further into the project, more damage than originally anticipated was found in the roof of the old front porch area. The front porch has been removed but you will begin to see the new front porch, that will look exactly like the roof removed, returning in the next few weeks.



Great weekend for HTMS Baseball with a sweep 12-2 over Homewood. The Huskies are now 16-2 on the season! GO HUSKIES!

Magnolia Elementary construction making great progress! Rain, rain stay away at least for just another few days. The majority of the building is under roof and progress should begin to move much quicker. The paved drives look great leading to the front of the school. The new brick sign, although no school name is installed yet, looks great!
