In between Kane’s schoolgirl years in Perth and her star-ring role on the CW’s “Reign” (premiering Thursday at 9 p.m. EDT), there was a teenage stint on the Aussie soap “Neighbours.” Then her ramen-and-odd-jobs struggles in

Los Angeles four years ago as she tried to break into the big time.

The dry spell she encountered there triggered self-doubt and even anxious migraines. “I was so sick of being unhappy,” she recalls. “That’s no way to live.” She came close to going back to Perth and getting back in school.

Then a final Hollywood push bore fruit. Kane was cast in “Power Rangers R.P.M.,” followed by “Teen Wolf.”

Then she got her hands on a script for “Reign.” The role of Mary Stuart seemed perfect to her, all the more so since Kane’s mother is descended from the House of Stuart. Kane wangled an early audition and was signed without anyone else being looked at.

“The hours are long and it’s hard work, but it’s fantastic,” Kane says. “I’ve never been happier than in the past year. I just need to remind myself to breathe!”

As history reminds us (as does “Reign,” whatever its histori-cal indulgences), Mary is a 16th-century teenage monarch who arrives in the French court with her ladies-in-waiting entourage to follow through with her arranged engagement to the king’s son, Prince Francis, which will secure Scotland’s strategic alli-ance with her homeland. Needless to say, complications arise and many challenges face Mary — romantic, political and life-and-death. Kane happily rolls out adjectives to describe her: “ar-rogant, headstrong, vivacious, smart, short-tempered, likable.”

She might also have added that Mary, like nearly everybody else on “Reign,” is gorgeous, an accomplishment she satisfies naturally.

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. — Aretha Franklin says “the side effects were rough” from her treatment for an undis-closed condition.

The 71-year-old singer sat at a piano Wednesday inside a Westin hotel in the

Detroit suburb of Southfield. She sang Etta James’ “At Last” and told reporters she’s “glad to be back in it” — a refer-ence to her music. The Detroit News re-ports she’s starting on a new album with producers Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds and Don Was.

Franklin says she and Edmonds were

supposed to team up in July, but couldn’t because of her medical treatments. She says it was music executive Clive Davis who suggested she collaborate with Was, known for his work with the Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt and Willie Nelson. Franklin canceled several concerts ear-lier this year for health reasons.

After weeks of tumultuous debate, the measure passed late Wednesday with less than two hours to go until October 17, the date from which the Treasury had warned it might not be able to pay its bills.

The last-gasp plan will stave off the most pressing crisis by extending the US Treasury’s bor-rowing authority until February 7.

Lawmakers also reached agreement on funding government through January 15.

Obama signed the bill in the wee hours of Thursday, shortly after the Congressional green light.

In early market reaction, stocks in Asia rose. In Tokyo, the bench-mark Nikkei 225 index was up 169.03 points at 14,636.17 by the lunchtime break. In Hong Kong,

shares were up 0.23 percent. But amid the collective sigh of

relief, there was also a patent sense that bitterly divided Washington -- which has endured several nail-biting spats of budget brinkmanship in recent years -- had simply kicked the can down the road, yet again.

Indeed, both the spending and debt ceiling provisions only last until early next year, setting the stage for more confrontation.

Still, the fix, albeit temporary, was welcomed.

“We’re back from the #shut-down! Smithsonian museums will reopen on Thursday and the @Na-tionalZoo will reopen on Friday,”

the Smithsonian said in a tweet.Hundreds of thousands of fed-

eral workers were instructed to “reopen offices in a prompt and orderly manner,” according to a statement from Office of Manage-ment and Budget Director Sylvia Mathews Burwell.

Even before the acrimonious battle reached its climax with the definitive House of Representatives vote, Obama warned that Washing-ton must stop governing by crisis.

US leaders needed to “earn back” the trust of the American people in the aftermath of the crisis, Obama said.

“We’ll begin reopening our gov-

ernment immediately, and we can begin to lift this cloud of uncertainty and unease from our businesses and from the American people.”

With a bitterly divided Congress locked in stalemate for a month, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid worked behind closed doors with his Republican rival Senator Mitch McConnell to craft the compromise that had eluded Washington.

“The bipartisan Senate rose to the occasion and broke this dead-lock,” number two Senate Demo-crat Dick Durbin said.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

The good cheer continues with Pinktober® Party on Wednesday, 16 October 2013, with special performance by Ms. Shena Malsiana (Top 5 X Factor Indonesia Season 1). Ms. Malsiana will sing her best songs and covers for the first time in Bali after her vocals amazed the Indonesian audience earlier this year.

Also present during the announcement is Ms. Maria Nety Keraf, 52, a breast can-cer survivor. Ms. Keraf never thought she would have breast cancer until she found Bali Pink Ribbon. She performed

Ms. Keraf will be joined by the founders of Bali Pink Ribbon in the Pinktober® Party. Andrew Khoo, General Manager of Hard Rock Hotel Bali, explains, “Pinktober® continues to inspire us every year with encouraging stories. We are touched with the fight

that Ms. Keraf has shown among her family members and friends and I believe this is the true essence of why we are promoting Pinktober® around the world.”

Docking plan ahead of Galun-gan and Kuningan was justified by the Head of Klungkung Transpor-tation, Communications and Infor-matics Agency, Nengah Sukasta, Wednesday (Oct 16). He assured if the winning bidder could have been determined within this week. As consequence, on the Galungan and Kuningan feast the roro vessel would not serve passengers cross-ing to Nusa Penida.

Actually, the number of pas-sengers crossing the route could explode during the Galungan and Kuningan holidays. Even, previ-ously the addition of the number of crossing trips during holidays was intensively put into discourse by Transportation Agency. Unluckily, the roro vessel should be docking ahead of the holiday. “Docking is

mandatory if it would be operated again in the future,” he said. He said there had been alternative crossing services other than roro vessel at the Padangbai Harbor namely by boat as well as through the three traditional crossing harbors such as at Kusamba, Klungkung, taking advantage of boat.

He said the roro vessel had owned a schedule for docking, so he asked the community to understand for the sake of future safety in mak-ing the crossing to Nusa Penida and vice versa. If the roro vessel would not be operating, the crossing of freights and passengers would explode at the Kusamba traditional harbor. The Transportation Agency officer assigned for the traditional crossing harbor at Bias hamlet, Made Sedana Yoga, recently said

that his party would add boat and trip to Nusa Penida.

He said the crossing was not only crowded during Galungan and Kun-ingan feast, but also at the moment related to Ngusaba Desa ritual at Penataran Ped Temple on Saturday (Oct 19). He said there would be two or three additional boats for each harbor. In case of passenger accu-mulation occurred at the harbor, then the number of departure trip would also be increased up to three to four times each day. As previous experi-ence, ceremonial activities at Nusa Penida and holidays like Galungan and Kuningan often kindled a surge of passenger at traditional harbor. Instead, the roro vessel would be docking so that it was estimated to aggravate the crowdedness at tradi-tional crossing. (kmb31)

Denpasar (Bali Post)—The Denpasar Sanitation and Landscaping Agency (DKP) disciplined 90

people caught littering along Jalan Imam Bonjol. As a result of the viola-tion, dozens of those residents should be ready to come before the court for misdemeanor trial to account for their actions. The Head of Denpasar Sanitation and Landscaping Agency, I Ketut Wisada, revealed the matter on Wednesday (Oct 16).

According to Wisada, the amount of people disciplined broke the record as the most violations for several months. He said the 90 residents were ensnared in the operation from Monday (Oct 14) to Wednesday (Oct 16). The offenders were arrested when disposing rubbish at illegal location on Jalan Imam Bonjol Denpasar. “Pursuant to the Mayoral Regulation of Den-pasar, littering schedule has been determined at 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Those ensnared in the operation were mostly disposing rubbish outside the specified hours. They mostly did it during the day,” he said.

In addition, he said, some people were also caught littering at road side during the operation. Obviously, such haphazard behavior triggered the appearance of vile main roads. “The identity card of those ensnared was im-mediately confiscated to put on misdemeanor trial. “The maximal sanction imposed for violators is maximally IDR 5 million. However, the application of sanctions to the offenders so far was IDR 150,000 to IDR 300,000,” he said while adding that similar enforcement would also be implemented on several other roads in Denpasar.

When met separately, Spokesperson of the Denpasar Municipality, IB Rahoela, said the large number of offenders within less than a week showed the low public awareness of disposing rubbish on time and at specified place. To provide a deterrent effect to residents, he hoped the judge should consider the negative effects of littering. “We expect the sanction imposed can be more decisive. For instance, the piling rubbish at the river can lead to flooding and the losses could be greater than the sanction,” he said. (kmb13)

Galungan, roro vessel comes into a dockSemarapura (Bali Post)—

Galungan and Kuningan feast are usually marked with the increase in crossing activ-ity to Nusa Penida Island and vice versa. However, a number of passengers apparently wishing to take advantage of roro vessel ahead of Galungan and Kuningan must be disap-pointed as it will be docking for one month, after the winning bidder can be ascertained this week.

Of course, it will have the slick fashion touch. There will be user-generated content from shoppers, celebrities and activists on 12 of the largest billboards in Times Square; content that will be replicated on the WatchHungerStop.com website. Kors aims to have 10,000 to 20,000 images go up during the event.

Models Lily Aldridge and Chanel Iman will be wearing their Watch Hunger Stop T-shirts, stores will be selling the fundraising watch that Kors designed, and a God’s Love We Deliver gala event will be held to bestow the Michael Kors Award for Outstanding Community Service to former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

It was the year to go big on World Food Day, Kors said, thanks to his

rapidly growing company that en-joyed a successful IPO in 2011 and earnings that nearly tripled in the last fiscal year. He said the company’s philanthropic efforts should grow, too, while focusing on a specific platform, and he couldn’t ask for a better partner than the United Nations World Food Programme.

His connection to World Food Day goes back to the 1980s and God’s Love We Deliver, a New York-based organization that delivers meals to those in need. That’s when AIDS was hitting the fashion industry hard.

“God’s Love had this seemingly simple mission of delivering nutri-tious meals to people too ill to leave their homes. I saw what a difference that small act made, both to those receiving the food and to those who

helped prepare and deliver the meals,” Kors said.

“So when I was looking to expand the scope of our philanthropy, hunger seemed a natural cause to commit to. I was also drawn to the direct nature of fighting hunger — I’m a results-oriented person, and this is a problem we can affect.”

Kors said he knows fighting hunger is one of many causes that compete for compassionate consumers’ atten-tion. October, for example, is known around the world as breast-cancer awareness month.

“So, we thought, ‘How do you make a lot of noise?’ Times Square, of course, and the Internet. So we’re using social media to bring everyone to Times Square, where they can help spread the word,” he said.

LOS ANGELES — Nicki Minaj knows celebrities-turned-designers aren’t always taken seriously in the fashion world, but she doesn’t mind.

At a launch event Tuesday for her Kmart collection, Minaj said skepticism of stars lacking formal design training is “understandable,” but she insists it’s “not about being a designer.”

The “Starships” rapper says her intention is simply to make clothes that she would love to wear.

The line for Kmart and shopyourway.com features midriff-baring tops, patterned leggings and curve-hugging dresses, as well as jew-elry, clutches and bejeweled caps. There’s also a pink velour track suit and a faux fur trapper hat.

Minaj says Chanel, Versace and Herve Leger were among her in-spirations. Prices range from $3.99 for a studded bracelet to $37.99 for a light wash, denim jacket.AP Photo/Michael Kors

NEW YORK — Michael Kors knows a few things about getting his message out. His ads, fashion shows and even his favorite models and socialites pretty much ooze the jet-setter lifestyle he embodies. On Wednesday, however, he embarks on a new campaign: World Food Day.

“To bring in a traveler, we need a fund of USD 10. Meanwhile, the fund allocated for promotion remains insufficient. Therefore, for the promotion we team up with the government and private sector in order to work,” said Chairman of the BPPI, Wiryanti Sukamdani, amid the socializa-tion in Denpasar.

According to her, the BPPI had established partnerships with private sector and the government to make promotion overseas dur-ing 2013. At least, her party had designed 11 programs with the government and 20 programs with private sector.

“This year, our target is at least 8.6 million to 9 million tourists. The market becoming our target is the Asian regional market such as Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore who have contributed greatly to tourist arrival to Indo-nesia,” she said.

She said that Indonesia in 2013 would optimize the campaign to attract tourists from Southeast Asian market for a vacation to Indonesia other than exploring the markets like Australia, India

Tourists flocked at Taman Ayun Temple, Badung, Bali Island. The Indonesian Tourism Promo-tion Board (BPPI) claimed that to bring in a foreign tourist to Indonesia, including Bali, required a budget of USD 10.

USD 10 required to bring in a foreign touristBali Post

DENPASAR - The Indonesian Tourism Promotion Board (BPPI) claimed that to bring in a foreign tourist to Indonesia, including Bali, required a budget of USD 10. Such condition was not consistent with the amount of fund allocated from the state budget for tourism promotion considered to remain inadequate.

and the Middle East. It posed an effort to expand the market, so that more and more tourists would be spending holidays in Indonesia, especially Bali.

“Overseas travel made by Sin-gaporean tourist reaches 12 mil-lion people. When we can draw 1 million tourists of Singapore to Indonesia, especially Bali, the tourism sector will develop significantly. Besides, we are also targeting the Middle East market, one of which is Turkey,” she said.

Sukamdani added that imple-mentation of the APEC 2013 highly supported the tourist arriv-al to Indonesia. APEC delegates attending the APEC convention amounted to 9,500 people. By all means, the implementation of APEC remarkably boosted the foreign tourists visiting Bali.

A member of the BPPI, Mangku Nyoman Kandia, also acknowl-edged if the budget constraint had led to the tourism promotion of Indonesia to be less optimal. Low budget for the Indonesian tourism promotion occurred due to the lack of maximum support

for the development of Indone-sian tourism promotion by the legislative.

“Another weakness of the Indonesian tourism promotion is the absence of a well-planned tourism promotion strategy for

the long term,” he said.Mangku Kandia in the inaugu-

ration of the BPPD Bali revealed that Indonesia ideally needed a fund of IDR 1 trillion for tourism promotion. In reality, the BPPI only received IDR 20 billion

from the state budget this year. Actually, when compared to the budget allocated by Malaysia for tourism promotion, it amounts to 20 times greater than the cost of tourism promotion allocated by Indonesia. (kmb27)

Damages at upstream nature Wells of downstream residents start to dry up

Tri Hita Karana cosmological concept induced by the ancestors of Balinese people actually poses a philosophy of life needing to be implemented until the current glob-al era. It contains quite universal meanings. One of them is preserv-ing the natural environment. How-ever, this philosophy of life seems rarely implemented by the leaders of Bali, so many activities indicat-ing to exploit the environmental massively occur. This condition can be seen clearly from many dam-ages at upstream region (forest) in Bali. Meanwhile, the government’s policy for managing the integrated Bali is increasingly difficult with the reasons of regional autonomy. As a result, the threat of natural disasters leading to drought on the Island of a Thousand Temples is more widely open. Even, the wells owned by a number of residents in Northern Denpasar begin to dry up. Why does it happen?

The difficulty to get clean wa-ter threatening Denpasar posing the downstream region in Bali is now increasingly felt by some residents. Since the past few days, the wells, chiefly the dug wells, owned by Peguyangan villagers have began to dry out. Such con-dition is for the first time experi-enced by Peguyangan residents. “Some of dug wells owned by our residents have dried out,” said hamlet chief of Tek-Tek, Peguy-angan village, Northern Denpasar, Nyoman Bawa Riyasa, in the Bali Post limited discussion featuring Bali Threatened by Water Crisis, Friday (Oct 11).

Other than Bawa Riyasa, the discussion was also attended by some speakers such as the Division Head of Production, the Denpasar Agriculture, Food Crops and Horticulture Agency IB Mayun Surya Wangsa, Direc-tor of Denpasar Municipality

Waterworks (PDAM) I Putu Gede Mahaputra and a member of Commission B of the Denpasar House I Ketut Sugiata.

Bawa Riyasa said that people using dug wells already felt if the water discharge had reduced since a few months ago. How-ever, they were still able to sur-vive and find water in their well although it took them a longer time. However, since the past few days, the dug wells owned by residents had begun to dry up. “They started not to be able to get clean water for the needs of their family,” he said.

Initially, Bawa Riyasa said, at least 8 to 10 dug wells of resi-dents started to dry up. To meet the needs for clean water, they got the help from the PDAM Denpasar. Every day, the PDAM should supply clean water to resi-dents whose wells had dried up. In addition, his party also made

coordination with one of the shop owners having an artesian well to be asked for water for the sake of his residents. Moreover, the shop had not been in operation yet. “We also got help from the artesian well owned by one of the shop owners,” he explained.

Aside from residents of Northern Denpasar facing the clean water crisis, the local government-owned company like the PDAM Denpasar also experienced similar condition. A number of surface water sources taken advantage as raw materials for clean water had decreased as well. Such condition obviously affected the water supply to customers. “We are also subject to the impact when the discharge of river water for the water sources of PDAM decreases. Some areas cannot be served for entirely 24 hours because the wa-ter discharge decreases,” said the Director of PDAM Denpasar, I Putu Gede Mahaputra.

Allegedly, the water crisis expe-rienced by Denpasar residents was inseparable from the environmental destruction at the upstream region of Bali. Impact of the destruction would first be felt by people liv-ing at downstream region such as Denpasar. “Damaged forests and rampant land conversion at the upstream region can be the cause of rapid water crisis in Denpasar,” said Bawa Riyasa and Mahaputra.

To minimize the threat, they expected the provincial govern-ment could better maintain and attempt in order the environ-mental damage in Bali could be suppressed. Without this commit-ment, it was not impossible for Bali in general to experience a water crisis in the future. Hence, it was necessary to fortify the provincial government’s commit-ment to prevent the environmen-tal destruction, especially in the upper regions of Bali. (ara)

This make the warung is crowded with visitors. Not only the locals but also domestic tourists and foreign visitors often come to the warung. The warung which was established in the 60’s has great menus with delicious taste. The best part is the taste is still the same

until now It is not surprising that Warung Lukluk which is established by I Ketut Merta and Ni Wayan Sem-brog has loyal customers including repeater guests form Indonesia and abroad Menu Lawar, be nyatnyat and dendeng are the menus demanded by the customers. The dendeng is one of the most special dish because it fried and then given a special spicy food that is also a bit sweet. It is trully a special menu and it will make you want to eat more.

The sambal in the warung is also very special. It is custom made and added with the soup, it will become a perfect dish for the customers. The lawar served there is also different. It doesn’t use blood. It is made from jackfruit, roasted coconut and meat then mixed with traditional seasoning.

“If there is the customer want to order the lawar which is red,we can make it for them,” said I Wayan As-trajaya accompanied by his wife, Ni Komang Rani as the current owner

of Warung Lukluk. The menus con-sists of two kind of meats, beef and pork. There is also chicken but only for the soup. “We always give choic-es because many of our customers are from the moslem community,” he added. Astrajaya said that the customers coming to his warung is coming from all around Indonesia but the most is coming from Medan, Jakarta and Surabaya.

Chief of Dauhwaru customary village, I Nengah Mendres, said on Wednesday (Oct 16) the opening of such 24-hour modern store had a negative impact on the local rural environment. It also reaped complaints from local residents because the area around the store was indirectly taken advantage by the youth as a place to hang out and get drunk.

In addition, the store attendants also of-ten threw garbage haphazardly in the store courtyard. “Various rubbishes are disposed at the location, including sanitary napkins. We often reminded not to disturb the public order. The store should comply with the existing laws,” said Mendres. Customary village through pecalang or customary

security officer also often performed a discipline in the store and including in a number of boarding houses at Dauhwaru. People were asked not to make a visit later than 10:00 p.m. or early morning so it would not disturb the public order. “Indeed, it has a negative impact. Hopefully, the store could comply with the regional bylaw. Besides, it is also intended to protect the existence of traditional market located nearby the store,” he added.

On the other hand, the Head of Jem-brana Municipal Police (Satpol PP) when contacted separately on Thursday (Oct 17) stated if his party would take action against the modern store. According to him, the Regional Bylaw on the modern store busi-

ness permit (IUTM) mentioned that modern stores opened for 24 hours should submit a regent recommendation.

According to him, the Indomaret store was once reprimanded to submit it. “On the following day, I ordered the civil ser-vant investigator to check it. If it has not owned yet, we will send a reprimand,” he explained. He said such an action was necessary because it had a negative impact especially on young generation and sur-rounding sanitation.

As reported previously, the Indomaret store was alleged to have violated the re-gional bylaw because among some articles in the Regional Bylaw No.08/2010 regard-ing the arrangement and empowerment of traditional markets, the modern store did not comply with the provisions such as store hours and collaboration with the product of local business. Ultimately, the regional bylaw seemed like a paper tiger only. (kmb26)

Denpasar (Bali Post)—

The shemales were proven to steal the mobile phones and credit card in the bag owned by Emeric Beyeler, 34, from France. Previously, the victim came to the scene to enjoy the night entertainment. At that time, the victim placed her bag on the table. When left for a while, in fact her bag was open. Indomaret store at Dauhwaru, Jembrana, violating of the regional bylaw had a negative impact on the surrounding environment. Apart from being a place to hang out and drink until early morning, the rubbish was also strewn around the store.

Five major blazes were burn-ing across the state of New South Wales, fanned by high, erratic winds in unseasonably warm 34 degree Celsius (93 Fahrenheit) weather, as infernos in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney plunged the city into an eerie, ash-flecked darkness.

“We are unclear yet as to how many properties have been lost, but it’s expected by the time we finish counting, it will be at least in the hundreds,” said NSW state Premier Barry O’Farrell.

“It will take some days to see the end of these fires and I suspect if we get through that without the loss of life, we should thank God for miracles.”

NSW Rural Fire Service Com-

missioner Shane Fitzsimmons said it had been a “very difficult and dangerous day” of “extraordi-nary fire behaviour”, with blazes travelling vast distances due to the winds.

“This is as bad as it gets, you’re talking destructive, damaging, and people losing everything they own,” Fitzsimmons told reporters. “I think we will be counting properties in the dozens if not the hundreds.”

No fatalities have been reported so far, while just one firefighter has been injured, but Fitzsimmons said there were “many hours yet still to run” with a forecast thunder-storm and change of wind likely to complicate efforts. “It’s going to be a long, difficult and dangerous

evening ahead,” he said.Springwood man Joe Moore told

Sky News his home had been razed while an estimated 40 other houses had been lost in the village, though that figure could not be confirmed by officials. “It’s about as bad a situ-ation as we could ever have hoped for,” he said.

“It’s one of those things, if you want to live up in the Blue Moun-tains it’s a beautiful place to live, but it has the dangers of nature’s ferocity like we had today.”

The blaze was believed to have started when a power line came down in strong winds, according to media reports.

Sydney health authorities issued a respiratory alert after a blanket of smoke settled over the city, bathing familiar landmarks including the Opera House and Bondi Beach in an otherworldly amber hue and caus-ing ash to rain from the skies. The plume was so thick it showed up on the nation’s weather radar.

JERUSALEM - Turkey delib-erately blew the cover of an Israeli spy ring working inside Iran in early 2012 and dealt a significant blow to Israeli intelligence gathering, according to a report in the Wash-ington Post on Thursday.

There was no immediate com-ment from Israel or Turkey, but Israeli ministers have accused Turk-ish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan of adopting an anti-Israeli stance in recent years to bolster his country’s standing in the Muslim world.

Once-strong relations between Turkey and Israel hit the rocks in 2010 after Israeli commandos killed nine Turkish activists who were seek-ing to break Israel’s long-standing naval blockade of the Gaza Strip.

Washington Post columnist Da-vid Ignatius said Israel apparently used to run part of its Iranian spy network out of Turkey, giving Turk-ish secret services the opportunity to monitor their movements. The paper quoted U.S. officials as saying Israel believed that the Turks would never turn on the Jewish state after years of cooperation.

However, it said that in early 2012 Erdogan disclosed to Tehran the identities of 10 Iranians who had travelled to Turkey to meet Israeli spies.

In April 2012, Iran announced that it had broken up a large Israeli spy network and arrested 15 suspects. It was not clear if this was connected to the alleged Turkish leak.

Iran has long accused Israel of spying inside the Islamic Republic and of killing a string of Iranian nuclear scientists - the last in Janu-ary 2012. Israel and the West accuse Iran of looking to build an atomic bomb. Tehran denies this.

FAILED RECONCILIATIONDeputy Israeli Foreign Minister

Zeev Elkin declined to comment on the Washington Post report, but said relations with Turkey were “very complex”.

“The Turks made a strategic deci-sion ... to seek the leadership of our region, in the Middle East, and they chose the convenient anti-Israeli card in order to build up leadership,” he told Israel Radio.

Energy Minister Silvan Shalom also declined to comment, but told Israel Radio that after unrest shook the Arab world in 2011, Erdogan had sought to win “legitimisation as the undisputed leader of the new revolution”.

The United States tried to bro-ker a reconciliation between its allies Turkey and Israel in March, persuading Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to apologise for the 2010 killings.

However, Israeli officials said subsequent attempts to build bridges by agreeing on a deal to compensate families of those killed in the Israeli naval raid had floundered.

“The only thing that we have achieved since March is to show the Americans that Erdogan is not remotely interested in a reconcilia-tion,” said an Israeli diplomat, who declined to be named given the sen-sitivity surrounding the issue.

Shortly after the 2010 incident off the shores of Gaza, the then-Israeli defence minister Ehud Barak voiced concern that Turkey could share Israeli intelligence secrets with Iran.

“There are quite a few secrets of ours (entrusted to Turkey) and the thought that they could become open to the Iranians over the next several months ... is quite disturb-ing,” Israel’s Army Radio quoted him as saying in August 2010.

NEW DELHI - The World Bank Wednesday cut its growth forecast for India to 4.7 percent this year, but said it should ac-celerate in 2014 as the rupee’s dive translates into an export-led boost for Asia’s third-largest economy.

The rupee’s recent plunge against the dollar has made India’s exchange rate “more competitive than the develop-ing country average”, giving the nation’s exports a chance to out-perform emerging market rivals, said Martin Rama, the Bank’s chief South Asia economist.

“We remain upbeat on growth potential,” he told a news con-ference.

Growth in India’s gross do-mestic product should pick up in the 2014-15 financial year to 6.2 percent, according to the

World Bank.This year’s forecast of 4.7

percent expansion, broadly in line with many private econo-mists, was down from an April forecast of 6.1 percent, with the bank blaming factors including a slowdown in manufacturing and investment and weak business confidence amid high interest rates.

But the projection by the World Bank, whose focus is on poverty eradication through development, was nearly one percentage point above the 3.8 percent growth forecast made by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), its sister organisation, earlier this month.

The IMF, which also cited lacklustre activity in manufac-turing and high interest rates as dampening demand and deterring investment, said stronger exports should raise India’s growth rate

to five percent in 2014.Bank officials declined to

be drawn on the divergence between their growth forecast and the prediction of the IMF, the guardian of global budget orthodoxy.

The IMF forecast had angered India’s Congress-led govern-ment, which is struggling to turn the economy around ahead of polls due by next May.

The government, which has forecast five to 5.5 percent growth for this year, called the IMF’s projections “overly pes-simistic” and demanded a review of its methodology.

Martin said the Bank sees “a positive outlook (for India) growing forward”, citing low core inflation, an expected bum-per farm crop, stronger exports and the government’s stepped-up commitment to economic reforms.

The current account on the balance of payments, which includes imports and exports in both goods and services, plus all other current transfers, is a closely tracked indicator of the ability of a country or area to pay its way in the world.

BEIJING - Foreign invest-ment in China rose 6.2 percent year-on-year in the first nine months of 2013, the government said Thursday.

However, while the commerce ministry said Chinese investment overseas had increased sharply over the first nine months of the year, the amount of cash going to Japan had almost halved.

Beijing said Foreign Direct In-vestment (FDI), which excludes financial sectors, reached $88.6 billion for January-September.

For September alone FDI climbed 4.9 percent to $8.84 billion, well up from the 0.62 percent rise seen in August.

But the figure is a sharp slow-down from 24.13 percent seen in July and 20.12 percent in June.

The amount of money com-ing from the European Union rose 23 percent year-on-year to $5.94 billion, while from the United States it increased 21.3 percent to $2.88 billion.

The vast majority, however, comes from from a group of 10 Asian countries and regions

including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Thailand and Singapore. FDI from the region jumped 7.5 percent to $76.3 billion in January-September.

“Investment from the 10 Asian countries and regions, the EU and the US maintained rather fast growth,” the com-merce ministry said in the statement.

Separately, investment from China rose 17.4 percent year-on-year to $61.64 billion during the nine months, the ministry said.

However, the amount of cash going to Japan slumped 45.5 percent. The plunge comes as the two countries are embroiled in a sovereignty dispute over islands they both claim in the East China Sea -- known as Diaoyu in China and Senkaku in Japan.

The long-simmering ten-sions boiled over in September last year, when Tokyo nationa-lised the islands, sparking a bitter diplomatic stand-off.

Despite the row, Japanese investment in China during the first nine months rose 5.62 percent to $5.94 billion.

THE name Kebo Iwa has long been known by Balinese people. When reading or hearing about the story of his life, as though we are proffered with a fiction mixed with history. As a histori-cal figure, Kebo Iwa is described as a mighty and powerful knight. There is a source mentions if he was a governor of the king Gajah-waktra ruling at Bedahulu (now Bedulu) around 1324 -1343 AD. Kebo Iwa is mentioned as one of the military commanders of Bali during the reign of King Sri Asta Sura Ratna Bumi Banten in the early fourteenth century.

As a fictional character, Kebo Iwa who also has another name like Kebo Taruna and Kebo Wandira is described as a remark-able man. The son of Commander Rakryan Buncing is described as a giant man having a big posture. Range of his feet is very wide, so that he can travel quickly. If he wants to drink, he just needs to stab his finger into the ground and a small well will emit water.

Kebo Iwa can also carve a stone with his nail. Whenever

there is a big hole, people always call it as the footprint of Kebo Iwa. Others also say that a hollow rock on Soka Beach (Tabanan) is the pot of Kebo Iwa. He is described as a strong giant man that eats so much so that to cook rice he needs a large pot.

Though being powerful, Kebo Iwa does not have egoistic or ar-rogant nature. Story on the end of his life is very tragic and even it draws a variety of interpretations and meanings. It can be seen when Gajah Mada intended to conquer Bali for the realization of the unity of the archipelago. This vice regent from Majapahit king-dom considered it impossible to conquer Bali as long as Kebo Iwa was still alive. He then arranged a strategy where Kebo Iwa was picked up to be invited to Ma-japahit. Kebo Iwa requested the help dig a well for the kingdom in East Java experiencing water crisis. As a prize, he would be awarded a beautiful and graceful girl from Lemah Tulis.

Kebo Iwa met the request. When digging a well, the men

of Gajah Mada pelted Kebo Iwa with rock stones in order the strong man from Bali could be buried alive. Kebo Iwa got up and was aware if he was deceived. He then opened the secret of his weakness where to kill him was enough to use whiting and betel leaf.

Such a word-of-mouth story also raises a variety of interpreta-tions. Balinese people call that whiting symbolizes Lord Shiva and betel leaf symbolizes Lord Vishnu. Thus, Kebo Iwa got puri-fication from Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu to attain moksha. In some regions, before people chew betel leaf, the tip of betel leaf is cut first. Why? It is done to commemorate the death of Kebo Iwa.

A variety of interpretations apparently cannot be resisted. For example, why was Kebo Iwa willing to die? There are commentaries saying if the ideal of Gajah Mada was very noble namely to unite the archipelago. Therefore, for the sake of unity, Kebo Iwa was willing to sacri-fice his life.

One of the figures of Songan village, Ardi Negara, said on Wednesday (Oct 16) that ignorance of some people around the Geopark area seemed quite reasonable. So far, the Bangli government strug-gling for the inclusion of the Batur caldera region into a world geopark network, according to him, had not been able to give a detailed explanation to local community related to the geopark masterplan. On that account, it was natural for most people at 15 villages in the geopark area to not understand about the purpose and objectives of the government to struggle for the existence of the geopark.

“All this time, the geopark masterplan had not been explained related to its progressive measures.

If the masterplan related to mos-quito, it would clearly show off a mosquito, if it was related to fly, it would show off a fly. The govern-ment should be able to explain the details as much as possible related to the direction of the geopark itself. So, there is no longer a hidden masterplan, whatever the masterplan is,” he said.

Similar opinion was revealed by Chief of Songan customary vil-lage, Ketut Kinia. He considered the existence of geopark could not provide a significant impact on the welfare of the surrounding community so far. On the contrary, the natural destruction carried out by unscrupulous people around the geopark area was even more uncontrollable. (ina)

Tafsir Nurchamid, former dep-uty rector of the country’s largest university for human resources, finance and general administra-tion, was summoned again on Thursday as a suspect for further investigation in the case.

Tafsir is accused of stealing state money by inflating the cost of the procurement of the installation in the fiscal year of 2010-2011.

Tafsir, who was already in-vestigated earlier on Sept 27 as a suspect refused to answer report-ers’ questions when he arrived at KPK on Thursday morning.

During his first investigation last month , his lawyer Cudri Si-tompul told reporters Tafsir com-mitted no markup saying his client followed only the procedure in the implementation of the project.

Tafsir was responsible for the implementation of a number of projects of the state university worth Rp21 billion including for the procurement of the information technology for the laboratory.

Cudri also said his client re-ceived no order from his superior former rector Gumilar Rusliwa Somantri in the case.

Tafsir is charged with abusing his power causing losses to the state and he is facing a maximum punishment of 20 years in jail and a fine of Rp1 billion.

Gumilar has also been ques-tioned by KPK as part of the investigation of the case.

A Public Fund Management audit for the 2009-2011 budget years by the Supreme Audit Agency published in January 2012, showed that there were potential losses of around Rp45 billion in two projects of the university.

JAKARTA - With elections looming, dozens of young Indone-sians sprawled out on a driveway roar with laughter as a comedian pokes fun at the country’s politicians, many of whom hark back to the days of dictatorship.

Indonesians between 17 and 31 will represent 30 percent of the vote in parliamentary and presidential elections that begin six months from now, and they are demanding fresh faces with new ideas.

“We need a leader who will get things done, but I don’t want to see another president with a military background,” 30-year-old writer Nelvia Effendi told AFP at the event, a discussion on the role of social media in the elections.

Indonesia has long been ruled by militaristic types -- its current president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, is a former general.

And ageing ex-military commanders accused of bloody human rights violations are among current presidential candidates.

“We are looking for someone different. These politicians with military backgrounds, they offer nothing new. Their programmes are abstract with nothing concrete,” Effendi said.

The discussion was held by AyoVote (Let’s Vote), an organisa-tion started by young Indonesians concerned that their peers did not have the tools to make an educated vote.

They invite comedians and bands and deploy young celebrities as their ambassadors, and communicate through YouTube, Twitter and Facebook.

While young Indonesians know they want something different, many are “clueless” about the political process, said 28-year-old AyoVote co-founder Pingkan Irwin.

“A lot can’t even name their local member of parliament,” she said.

Many Indonesian youths say they are simply jaded by the lack of progress since the downfall, with representatives regularly photographed asleep during parliamentary sessions.

They are fed up too of the rampant corruption that oozes from every level of government, with even the president’s party rocked by several corruption scandals.

Whether or not the youth turn out to vote in large numbers, par-ties are taking the gamble and fielding more young candidates.

Faisal Yusuf, 35, is running for a seat with the marginal NasDems Party, selling himself as a green, clean, man of the people.

Like many young leaders, he is emulating the wildly popular Joko Widodo, who won the Jakarta governorship a year ago for his transparency and style of leadership.

Young Indonesians in particular are drawn to Widodo, 52, who has no ties to the military or authoritarian past and is known for his love of heavy metal music.

Millions are pushing for Widodo’s party leader -- 66-year-old Megawati Sukarnoputri, a former president and daughter of the na-tion’s first president -- to step down and let him run for president, hopeful for a real change.

Older candidates eyeing the presidency are scrambling for a slice of the affection Widodo has won, with many turning to social media.

The unpopular presidential hopeful Aburizal Bakrie, 66, tried to shed his image as a ruthless business tycoon by posting a photo of himself donning a feathered hat with indigenous Indonesians on his Twitter account.

Prabowo Subianto, a 62-year-old presidential candidate, has gar-nered more than three million “likes” on his Facebook page, calling social media a “revolution” and an election “game-changer”.

But for Subianto, social media is a double-edged sword that has also exposed his bloody past as commander of an elite military unit accused of kidnapping and killing students during the riots that toppled the dictatorship.

Modi, three times chief minister of the coastal state of Gujarat, was put forward by India’s main opposi-tion party in September, cementing the rise of a leader who many think is capable of turning round the economy but who remains tainted by deadly religious riots that broke out on his watch in 2002.

The ruling Congress party has led a coalition government for nearly a decade but is headed for its worst ever performance in a general election as it battles allega-tions of corruption and a sluggish economy, a survey by pollsters Team Cvoter for two television networks showed.

The survey forecasts the BJP to pick up 162 seats. The last Cvoter survey conducted in August, before

Modi was named, forecast the party would get 130 seats, up from the 116 it now holds.

The Congress tally would drop to 102 seats from the 206 it now holds in the 545-member lower house of parliament if voting in the election were to reflect the poll, conducted for the India TV and Times Now networks and released late on Wednesday.

A coalition led by the BJP is expected to win 186 seats, mean-ing the BJP would have to find new allies among regional parties if it were to form a government. To rule, a party needs the support of 272 members of parliament.

The BJP and Congress are In-dia’s largest national parties but political power has shifted in recent years to smaller regional or state-level parties, making them kingmakers during coalition build-ing and giving them more influence

over policy.Modi is credited with helping

Gujarat’s economy achieve average yearly growth in the double digits in the past decade and he is popular among many wealthy businessmen. But he remains a polarizing figure, even within his own party, and some analysts believe he would struggle to cobble together a coalition.

A federal government beholden to regional parties with their own diverse agendas could be fragile and unwieldy, making it harder to manage Asia’s third-largest economy, whose growth rate has al-ready slowed to a decade low after a period of policy paralysis.

However, another opinion poll, released on Thursday, suggested the BJP could make major gains against regional rivals in India’s northern heartland states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, home to a quarter of the population of 1.2 billion.

CARACAS - In the immigration area of Venezuela’s biggest airport, about a dozen officials in red T-shirts and baseball caps randomly check pas-sengers leaving the country. The officials are not guards or police: they are bureaucrats at state currency board Cadivi investigating whether travelers’ documents match their requests for hard-to-get dollars.

The new checks, launched this month, have contributed to infuriating, hours-long queues at the Simon Bolivar international airport, which serves Caracas, Venezuela’s capital.

“Unfortunately, people are always going to try and beat the system,” said photographer Francisco Blanco, looking irritated in a slow-moving queue before his flight to Paris.

View gallery.”“The problem is that we still have currency controls. So there are a lot of

tricks going on. And with the black market price of the dollar so high, it’s difficult to stop them.” So-called “currency tourism” has become a major problem for President Nicolas Maduro’s socialist government as Venezuelans make profits using a play on the South American country’s tightly regulated foreign exchange system. There are strict limits on the availability of dollars at the official rate of 6.3 bolivars per dollar.

But with an airline ticket, an individual can exchange Venezuelan bo-livars for up to $3,000 at that rate. Many of those greenbacks are diverted for sale on the black market, where each dollar can fetch about seven times the official rate.

The farther away the traveler’s destination, the higher the allocation of dollars, meaning there is also a trade in illegal tickets to fool Cadivi when dollar requests are made.

“We’re very rigorous on the authenticity of tickets,” said Cadivi security manager Rafael Marfisi as a line of travelers hurried to have their details checked in a computerized database.

“Many people tell Cadivi they’re going to destinations such as Costa Rica, Peru and Ecuador. And then they travel to closer places such as Panama, Aruba or Curacao.” A trip within the Caribbean entitles a Venezuelan to buy up to $1,000 from the government at the official rate, while Peru warrants the maximum allocation of $3,000.

NEW DELHI - India’s opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has picked up support since naming Hindu nationalist Narendra Modi as its candidate for prime minister last month, but would need allies to form a government, two new opinion polls show.

Venezuela authorities hunt ‘currency tourists’

The mood from many House Republicans was a begrudging acceptance of a deal many of them felt failed to address their desire to rein in outsized federal spending and roll back the president’s health care law known as “Obamacare.”

House Budget chairman Paul Ryan, who voted against the bill, called it a “missed opportunity.”

The US economy has faced uncharted waters during the more than two-week crisis, with the Treasury saying that from Thursday it would no longer be able to borrow more money and avert a devastating debt default.

Ratings firm Standard & Poor’s said the government shutdown had already taken $24 billion out of the economy and will cut growth in the fourth quarter significantly.

House conservatives have thus far thwarted votes on the debt ceiling and on passing a budget, demanding concessions from Obama.

Democrats have refused to allow Republicans to hold those issues to “ransom” with attempts to slash spending or dismantle Obamacare.

But Wednesday’s deal includes a mechanism that forces lawmakers into entering long-term budget negotiations, with recommendations due by December 13. As a sign of good faith regarding what is bound to be a brutal budget battle, Democratic Senate Budget Committee chair Patty Murray said she would sit down for breakfast Thursday with Ryan to discuss the path forward.

US officials and lawmakers are likely to seek to soothe rattled world markets and re-iterate that the full faith and credit of the United States remains intact. The Fitch ratings agency on Tuesday underlined the seri-ousness of the situation by putting the US government’s AAA credit rating on a downgrade warning.

Major world powers have been left looking on in dismay, unable to do anything to protect their own economic interests, with many deeply invested in US Treasuries -- hitherto seen as a safe haven.

China and Japan, which between them hold $2.4 trillion in US Treasur-ies, have expressed alarm and annoyance at the bitter political partisanship that has caused the weeks-long crisis.

The 32-year-old Pospisil, who usu-ally competes on the lower-ranked Challenger circuit, lost in the final qualifying round Monday but replaced Marinko Matosevic after the Austra-lian withdrew with a shoulder injury.

“This is an amazing feeling,” said Pospisil, who had lost his previous six main-draw matches.

“For sure Monfils wasn’t at his best today,” said Pospisil, who will play Dominic Thiem of Austria in the second round. “He arrived late from his Asia trip and I have been training here since Friday. That was a huge advantage for me.”

In the opening set, Monfils held off four break chances while serving at 5-4 down but failed to score a point in the tiebreaker.

The 31st-ranked Frenchman, a former world No. 7, battled back from a break down to level at 4-4 in the second set but dropped his serve again at 5-5. Pospisil served out the match without conceding a point.

Earlier, fifth-seeded Stepanek out-lasted Lukas Lacko of Slovakia 7-6 (4), 5-7, 7-6 (5) to reach his second

quarterfinal of the season after los-ing in the last eight at Eastbourne in June.

“It’s all about practice and prepara-tion. This is the result,” Stepanek said after the match lasted for more than 2 ½ hours. “It was very close.”

Stepanek saved two set points while serving at 5-4 down in the opening set. After leveling the match, Lacko received treatment for a right thigh injury. Stepanek missed his first match point at 5-4 in the final set before clos-ing out the victory with his 15th ace.

“In the second set, he got physi-cal troubles but I didn’t know how to handle the situation,” said Stepanek with a hoarse voice. “You can hear that I am not 100 percent healthy either.” Eighth-seeded Rosol served 10 aces while beating Mirza Basic of Bosnia-Hercegovina 6-3, 7-5 to reach his third quarterfinal of the year.

In first-round play, Lukasz Kubot of Poland defeated Florian Mayer of Germany 7-6 (1), 6-4. The 74th-ranked Kubot, who came back from 3-0 down in the second set, next plays third-seeded Fabio Fognini of Italy.

MELBOURNE - Jorge Lorenzo has refused to concede his MotoGP crown to rookie sensation Marc Marquez at Sunday’s Aus-tralian Grand Prix. Victory for Marquez at Phillip Island combined with anything worse than second place for fellow Spaniard Lorenzo will hand the 20-year-old the world title with two races to spare.

“I don’t have anything to lose, I have to try and win every race to the end of the season,” Yamaha rider Lorenzo told reporters. “But the title is not over because Marc is still not the world champion, although it is close to impossible because of the points and unless I win this race.

“But I have always been quite fast at Phillip Island although I have never won the MotoGP race there so maybe this can the first time.”

Lorenzo sealed his second world championship last year at the seaside circuit with a watchful runner up finish behind Casey Stoner, who collected a record sixth consecutive win at Phillip Island before retiring at season’s end.

The 26-year-old Mallorcan also has painful memories of the circuit, however, having mangled a finger at morning practice in 2011 and crashed at the first turn in 2009.

Lorenzo was rushed to nearby Melbourne for surgery after losing the tip of his finger in a crash at the circuit’s turn 12, but has lost no love for the curve that sweeps into the final straight.

“It goes up and down and if you have the right line you can slide on throttle in fourth gear for a long way at more than 200 km per hour,” he said.

“This is the best feeling you can have on a MotoGP bike. You have some tension and are not completely relaxed at this point but it is a great feeling.”

Long-time leader Spain, the de-fending World Cup champion, re-mains first in the rankings, followed by Germany and Argentina. Colombia and Belgium are next despite not playing at the 2010 World Cup, which is still a factor in the rankings over a four-year cycle of results.

Uruguay, a semifinalist in 2010, is No. 6 but must still beat 70th-ranked Jordan in a two-leg playoff next month to enter the World Cup draw on Dec. 6 in Salvador. Switzerland is seventh, its highest position since 1995.

The Netherlands is No. 8 and will be seeded if Uruguay is eliminated. Italy is officially tied at No. 8, though

it trails the Dutch by decimal points. Seedings in the European playoffs were also decided by Thursday’s rankings.

Portugal (No. 14), Greece (No. 15), Croatia (No. 18) and Ukraine (No. 20) will be seeded in next Monday’s draw. France (No. 21) missed out by a single ranking point, 871-870. Sweden (No. 25), Romania (No. 29) and Iceland (No. 46) are also involved.

The United States remains at No. 13 despite two victories in qualifiers against Jamaica and Panama. Mexico drops three to No. 24, and will face New Zealand — down 12 to No. 79 — in a playoff next month.

Ivory Coast, which beat Senegal

3-1 in the first leg of a playoff last weekend, is the best of Africa at No. 17.

Japan leads Asia, despite drop-ping two to No. 44. The other Asian teams at the World Cup are Iran (No. 49), South Korea (No. 56) and Australia (No. 57).

Serie A’s leading pair and biggest spenders AS Roma and Napoli clash on Friday evening (1845 GMT) in a match which has the sort of international appeal that Italian domestic football used to dish up on a weekly basis.

The match brings together two teams whose early perfor-mances have given a much-needed lift to a league generally seen as in perennial decline and challenged the dominance of Juventus, champions for the last two seasons.

Hosts and leaders Roma have made a remarkable start under new coach Rudi Garcia, win-ning all seven league games, blasting 20 goals and conceding only one. Their last two games have seen them flatten Bologna 5-0 and beat Inter Milan 3-0 at San Siro.

Napoli, under former Chelsea, Inter and Liverpool coach Rafael Benitez, are only two points be-hind, with only a draw at home

to table-propping Sassuolo cost-ing them a 100 per cent record and 18 goals in the bank

“Millions of people around the world will watch the match,” said Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis, a film producer who said he would watch the game from Los Angeles where he is on a visit.

“Napoli have never been afraid of anyone because we have a great coach and great players. I think the scudetto will be three-horse race, although I hope others such as Inter Milan and Fiorentina can join it.”

“I hope it’s a civilised battle, focused on maximum sporting respect, both on the field and in the stands and I appeal to our fans to be as extraordinary as they always are, whether we win, lose or draw.”

Napoli spent around 86 mil-lion euros ($116.03 million) in the transfer market during the close season, with 37 million go-ing on striker Gonzalo Higuain from Real Madrid.

However, De Lauren t i i s

pointed out that they still made a profit on their dealings thanks the 64 million euros they re-ceived from Paris St Germain for Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani. “We have shown the Napoli can create something positive,” said Di Laurentiis. “We are one of the few clubs who are in the black.”

Roma, led by evergreen 37-year-old forward Francesco Totti, were the second biggest spenders and could not be more different than the erratic, bick-ering outfit who struggled into sixth place last term.

Unfortunately, Serie A was forced to bring the game for-ward to Friday, just three days after the World Cup qualifiers, because of a protest march due to be held in the capital on Sat-urday.

As a result, some of the play-ers involved in matches in South America may only return on the day of the game itself. Juventus, who are level with Napoli on 19 points, are at sixth-placed Fiorentina on Sunday (1300).

FRANKFURT, Germany — The German Football Federation has called a news conference for Friday and is widely expected to announce the exten-

sion of coach Joachim Loew’s contract past next year’s World Cup.Germany has secured a slot at next year’s World Cup and DFB

officials have made it clear since then that Loew will get a contract extension, probably for another two years after the World Cup.

Loew’s current contract runs through the World Cup but DFB officials want an early extension to avoid any distractions during the tournament.

Loew has been charge of the team since 2006, when Jurgen Klinsmann stepped down following a third-place finish at the World Cup at home. Loew will celebrate his 100th match in charge when Germany plays Italy in Milan on Nov. 15.

MADRID - Bernd Schuster was ignominiously dumped as coach of Real Madrid in late 2008 and the plain-speaking German is eager for revenge when his Malaga side visit the Bernabeu in La Liga on Saturday (1400 GMT).

Sacked after he suggested it was impossible for Real to beat arch rivals Barcelona at the Nou Camp, Schuster believes Real’s stuttering start to their domestic campaign under new coach Carlo Ancelotti this season proves they are vulnerable.

Barca and Atletico Madrid have both won all eight of their matches and have a five-point lead over third-placed Real, who have yet to gel as a unit under Italian Ancelotti as he tries to make his mark on the team following the exit of Jose Mourinho.

A calm personality who avoids conflict, Ancelotti has promised the Real fans entertaining, attacking football, while combative and controversial Portuguese Mourinho often used defensive tactics to eke out results but alienated a significant section of the home supporters.

“I won’t deny that it’s an attractive game for me,” Schuster, who is returning to the Bernabeu as coach of a rival team for the first time since his dismissal, said in an interview with Marca sports daily published on Wednesday.

“Madrid is in a strange moment and I am going to go for it,” added the 53-year-old, who was known as “the blond angel” during his career as an attacking midfielder and is one of the few men to have played for Real, Barca and Atletico.

“It’s normal that the team retains much of Mourinho,” he said. “Carlo has arrived with a different philosophy, a different style, a different way of behaving and making the change is a really tough challenge.

“They are lacking in organisation... but I am realistic. To come out of the game with anything we will have to play a great match and they a bad one and even then they can still beat you.”

Qatar-owned Malaga are going through a process of adjustment after last season’s thrilling run to the Champions League quarter-finals and are 10th in the standings.

UEFA rules designed to stop clubs spending more than they earn have checked the club’s spend-ing spree and many of their top performers, including Santi Cazorla, Isco, Joaquin and Jeremy Toulalan, have moved on.

PERFECT STARTS

Although Schuster’s job is to rebuild the team and make sure they qualify for Europe, he said he would encourage his players to go after Real on Saturday and suggested some of their key performers might be jaded after the international break.

“Let nobody think that we are coming with a bus, if you just try to defend you are dead,” he told Marca. “If they put four past us then so be it, but with us stepping up to the plate, putting them under pressure in attack, without taking risks but courageously.

“It’s better to come out of the game with your head held high having given your all. “Maybe instead of playing with one forward as we have been we will play with two and take out a midfielder. “Let’s see if it works out for us, but if not at least we will have tried.”

Union workers from Serikat Pekerja Seluruh Indonesia (SPSI) walk during a protest at the business district in Jakarta, October 17, 2013. Almost one thousand workers participated in the protest, demanding wage raises and objecting to outsourcing on Thursday.

JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is investigating a case of cor-ruption in the procurement of information technology installation for the laboratory of the state University of Indonesia (UI).

The world’s largest democracy is due to hold its largest ever gen-eral election within the next six months.

(ina)

Criminal Detective section of Kuta Police managed to reveal the theft case occurred at the Lavida Loka Discotheque on Jalan Dou-ble Six, Legian, Badung. Before investigating the case for 24 hours, the culprits could have been arrested and immediately sent to Kuta Police detention room. Later on, it was known if the theft culprits were shemales frequently hanging out in Kuta area.

Chief of Kuta Police, Agus Tri Waluyo, accompanied by Section Chief of Criminal Detective, Wahyu Setyo, explained on Wednesday (Oct 16) the culprit consist-ing of six people namely Risha, 25, from Makassar, Munandar Mochtar alias Nanda alias Vienna, 26, from Balikpapan, Daniel Eko P alias Nadya, 27, from Malang, Ir-wansyah alias Keyla, 25, from Medan and Marcell Pangemanan alias Selo, 23, from Makassar.

The shemales were proven to steal the mobile phones and credit card in the bag owned by Emeric Beyeler, 34, from France. Previously, the victim came to the scene to enjoy the night entertainment. At that time, the victim placed her bag on the table. When left for a while, in fact her bag was open. Once checked, the Samsung Galaxy III mo-bile phone and 4 credit cards were gone. “It happened around 03:00 a.m.,” he said.

Before the case was reported, the victim staying at Villa I on Jalan Umalas Klecung, Canggu, Northern Kuta, Badung, had a chance to check her credit card in the Bank Permata. Apparently, her money had been taken as much as some IDR 38,802,000. “The case was immediately reported to Kuta Police. We follow up by visiting the crime scene and the examination of witnesses,” he said.

From the results of investigation, police finally suspected the culprits. Police tracked down the culprits and were found at Toko Butik on Jalan Kayu Aya Seminyak, Kuta. They were arrested at the location and im-mediately taken to Kuta Police station for further processing. “They were arrested around 7:00 p.m. We are still developing the case,” explained the former Chief of South Denpasar Police.

(ara)

(kmb13)
