Cage was named Best Global Actor in Motion Pictures at China’s Huad-ing Awards on Monday night. Nicole Kidman, honored as best global film actress, wore a black Prada dress while she walked the red carpet in Macau alongside Hong Kong legend and pal Jackie Chan. Cage has been shooting “Outcast” in Hong Kong with Hayden Christensen.

“I believe in the genius loci of a place, the genie of the place is what I call it. I absorb that energy and it affects performance wherever I go,” Cage said on the red carpet. “... Making a movie in China, I’m buzzing with good energy, I feel great here. I love the people I’m working with, I love the crew, and there’s a genuine warmth and enthusiasm that I

chained” was released last year, was named Best Global Director in Motion Pictures.

“I’ve been a fan of Asian cinema my whole life growing up. I did my movie ‘Kill Bill’ as a complete tribute to my love for it and so to come here amongst the Chinese film industry, get this from the Chinese fans is a dream come true,” said Tarantino.

Television awards went to Matthew Perry of “Friends” and “Downton Ab-bey” actress Michelle Dockery, who were among the attendees who left a handprint on star-shaped plaques for Macau’s Avenue of Stars.

“Avatar” star Sam Worthington, who received an award for Best Global Ac-

tion Movie Actor, shared that his plans for next year include filming sequels of Academy Award-winning science fic-tion epic.

“Well, we start filming next year. We do ‘Avatar 2’, ‘Avatar 3,’ ‘Avatar 4.’ Then they’ll come out Christmas concurrently kind of thing, different Christmases. I’m not too sure where we’re shooting at the moment. I know they’re still writing it. I know Jim (director James Cameron) loves China, loves it,” he said, referring to questions about returning to China. “Those types of films, if we get the op-portunity to work here that’ll be great. We’ll see what happens.”

NEW YORK — The foreign lan-guage Oscar competition this year will be wider than it ever has been before. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Monday that a record 73 countries, plus Hong Kong, Taiwan and the Palestinian territories, have submitted their entries to the Academy Awards.

The acclaimed “Wadjda” from Saudi Arabia, about an 11-year-old girl’s quest to obtain a bicycle, is the country’s first submission. “All God’s Children” is also the first entry from Moldova. Montenegro, previously a part of Yugoslavia, submitted a film for the first time as an independent country: “Ace of Spades.”

Entries are restricted to one per country and some nations’ choices were at odds with the film commu-nity.

China opted to submit the patriotic drama “Back to 1942” rather than Jia Zhang-ke’s festival favorite “A Touch of Sin.” The film, which depicts in-equality in contemporary China, won best screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

Two other well-received films, Japan’s “Like Father, Like Son” and India’s “The Lunchbox,” weren’t cho-

sen by their respective home countries. Japan instead opted for “The Great Passage,” while India chose “The Good Road.”

Last year, Michael Haneke’s French-language “Amour,” an entry from Austria, won the Oscar best foreign-language film. Haneke’s drama was the overwhelming front runner, but this year’s competition is considered wide open. Notables include Thomas Vinterberg’s “The Hunt” (Denmark), Asghar Farhadi’s “The Past” (Iran), Amat Escalante’s “Heli” (Mexico) and Paolo Sorrentino’s “The Great Beauty” (Italy). The entries will be whittled

down to a shortlist in January before the Oscars on March 2.

The foreign language category vot-ing process has often been criticized, particularly for its practice of allow-ing the initial choices to be made by national selection committees. In an effort to smooth out the final selection, all academy members will for the first time be allowed to vote on the foreign language film category.

Previously, voting was limited to members who viewed all five nominees in a theater. DVD screen-ers of the nominees will be sent to members this year.

Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup has developed over the past 25 years to become the world’s largest volunteer effort for ocean health. Each year millions of eco-friendly warriors from all over the world help to clear trash from the shores of lakes, streams, rivers and oceans. Thanks to these volunteers re-cording every article collected, Ocean Conservancy gains accurate insight into the manufactured items which are impacting our planet’s health.

Cleanups alone can’t solve this pollution problem. Nevertheless, the Ocean Trash Index provides a snapshot of what’s polluting our oceans so we can work to prevent specific items from reaching the

The “Green Army” covered a distance of 2 kilometres picking up all kinds of rubbish along the way. Plastic bags, containers, cut-lery, cans, cigarettes and household waste as well as abandoned shoes and fishing debris were just some of the 7,565 items collected. The total trash haul ended up weighing in at over 142,6 kilograms.

“Bali Hotel Associations is ex-tremely proud to take part in this eco-friendly initiative. It isdirectly in

line with our objective, which is to continuously strive to find ways to support programs that protect the en-vironment,” commented Alessandro Migliore, Chairman of the Bali Hotels Association.

“We hope that our actions will encourage locals and tourists alike to take note and assume responsibility for the daily consumption of one-time products that effectively contribute to the ocean trash problem. We would very much like to start a ripple effect that gets everyone thinking about this issue,” continues Alessandro.

Christiane Wasfy, General Manager of Anantara Seminyak Bali Resort & Spa and BHA board member in charge of environmental affairs commented, “The International Coastal Cleaning initiative is a program that is very close to all of our hearts. Anantara Seminyak Bali Resort & Spa together with the Rotary Club has driven this program for 4 years now. We are pleased to be able to collaborate with BHA for a greater degree of support this year. Singaraja (Bali Post)—Pregnant women in Gerokgak sub-

district are constantly advised to undergo HIV/AIDS test when getting antenatal checkup for the first time at public health center. It is carried out to anticipate the transmission of the hazardous virus to infants.

Ketut Indrawati, a midwife at the Gerokgak Public Health Center II as well as counselor having high concern for the prevention of HIV/AIDS in the region of Gerokgak, said that her party always briefed pregnant women in or-der to be vigilant against the transmis-sion of HIV/AIDS. They were advised to have a HIV/AIDS test when getting checkup at Public Health Center. Even, every pregnant woman having checkup at Gerokgak Public Health Center II would automatically get a blood test to find out whether the mother had been infected by HIV/AIDS or not. “At the Gerokgak Public Health Center II, each pregnant woman will be tested because the health center has owned a VCT service,” she said.

Indrawati said her party had found a pregnant woman with HIV/AIDS. It happened because the husband of the housewife was at high risk of being infected by HIV/AIDS. Having been found, the birth of the baby could be handled with special treatment so it was not infected by HIV/AIDS. Besides, she also found a couple with HIV, but they did not want to seek treatment so far. Fortunately, their child was known not to get infected to date because it had been given special home treatment. “It’s a pity, the couple has not yet been willing to seek treatment because they feel healthy,” she said.

As reported previously, up to August 2013 the cumulative data of HIV in Buleleng County showed there were 1,801 cases. Meanwhile, the average case finding ranged from 20 to 25 every month at 4 VCT services avail-able in Buleleng. During the period of January to September 2013, averagely four people died of AIDS every month belonging to productive age from 21 to 40 years old. (kmb15)

It was affirmed by Chief of Klungkung Police, Ni Wayan Sri Yudatni Wirawati, Monday (Oct 7). This only woman police chief in Bali said the closure of road access leading to Kertha Gosa was made from 1:00 p.m. It aimed to sterilize the situation around the Kertha Gosa. Thus, it would not interfere with the intended agenda. Secu-rity was provided in three rings, where the first ring would be filled by Presidential Security Forces (Paspampres), then the second and third ring were filled by police and military lineups. The road section to be closed included Jalan Puputan, Jalan Untung Surapati, Jalan Dipo-negoro, Jalan Gajah Mada as well as other minor road sections lead-ing to Kertha Gosa. “We estimate the road closure lasts to 5 o’clock

Road access to Kertha Gosa closed for five hours

Semarapura (Bali Post)—Existence of Kertha Gosa in Klungkung County is really a magnet for the APEC delegates

in Bali. Having been visited by APEC delegates from youth representatives, such historical relic was then planned to be visited by delegates of the Side Event of APEC Summit 2013 on Tuesday (Oct 8). For smoothness of the agenda, the Klungkung community should be patient because a number of road sections to Kertha Gosa would be closed for five hours.

p.m., but depending on the situation at the field later. Hopefully, people can understand the condition,” she explained.

Previously, some officers of the Presidential Security Forces had gone back and forth to Klungkung to comb out the Kertha Gosa area since last Saturday. They also made coordination with Klungkung gov-ernment related to dinner function of the delegates. As planned, there would be four delegates coming to Kertha Gosa, namely the Prime Minister of Salomon, President of Kiribati, Fijian Foreign Minister and Ambassador of the Marshal Island.

Acting Officer of Klungkung Regent, Tjokorda Gede Agung, said last Monday that sterilization was not only carried out at Kertha

Gosa area, but also at the area of Klungkung government to the of-fice area of Klungkung Culture and Tourism Agency. “Later, we will also showcase a variety of typical handicrafts of Klungkung such as the Kamasan classic painting, songket fabric, coins industry to coconut shell handicraft industry,” he explained.

The visit of Pacific leaders was scheduled to arrive in Klungkung around 3:00 afternoon. Prior to visiting Kertha Gosa, they would transit at the Klungkung govern-ment office, precisely at the wait-ing room of Regional Secretary of Klungkung. Then, the visit was directly resumed to Kertha Gosa ac-companied by tour guide that would explain about the history of Kertha Gosa. Apparently, the delegates

were deliberately directed to come into Kertha Gosa from the north, so they would not know if the roof of Kertha Gosa was damaged. Similar treatment also took place when the APEC delegates of youth elements made a visit to Kertha Gosa on October 4.

Did Klungkung government not feel ashamed of receiving the APEC delegates in Kertha Gosa under such condition? Tjok Agung admitted that his party never felt ashamed. “We show it off as it is. Obviously, we have tried to refur-bish it through the main regional budget 2014. We have allocated a budget worth IDR 1 billion,” he explained.

He hoped with so great attention given by world community to the existence of Kertha Gosa, central government was also concerned with the condition of Kertha Gosa. The Kertha Gosa claimed as the asset of Klungkung government needed a thorough refurbishment. Moreover, the Klungkung regional budget could not afford the thor-ough refurbishment. (kmb31)

But that’s changing as a younger generation of engineers and design-ers have arrived seeking clothes that coordinate. “There’s definitely a shift happening here, and the age of the Silicon Valley culture has something to do with it,” said image professional Joseph Rosenfeld.

“As a generation,” he said, young professionals “tend to care more about style than engineers of the past.”

The market has responded to this new attitude among the region’s ris-ing nerds, geeks and hackers with new online men’s stores, personal style consultants and an array of high-end shops at Northern Califor-nia’s biggest mall. They’re catering to the emerging members of a cre-ative industry who, nonetheless, are seeking something of a uniform.

“They’ll typically wear designer denim and a great button-up shirt by day, and throw on a sport coat at night to go to a cigar or wine

bar,” said Westfield Valley Fair mall general manager Matt Ehrie. “Sili-con Valley’s dressy attire would be casual Friday in most other parts of the country.”

Josh Meyer, 30, a products man-ager at a leading high-tech firm, rec-ognizes the generation gap. He said higher-level managers who have been in the industry for decades often wear baggy khakis and faded baseball shirts “like they’re going to a barbeque,” while millennials such as himself like to wear button-up dress shirts, “high-quality denim jeans with a roll at the bottom, nice shoes or possibly boots.” “I can pick out techies just walking down the street by these outfits,” he said.

The focus on men’s fashion has emerged in a sector where 3 of 4 workers are males. And it’s come late by comparison as women in technology have long faced style challenges.

Many have worked to strike a

casual, professional and creative balance, even as blogs and news stories regularly focus on the image of female high-tech executives — from the extraordinarily stylish Ya-hoo CEO Marissa Mayer, featured in last month’s Vogue magazine, to Facebook’s uber-chic chief operat-ing officer Sheryl Sandberg.

Meanwhile, when men are simi-larly featured attention often shifts to casual attire — from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s famous hoodie to former Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ black turtleneck.

“As much as we want to think there isn’t a boys club, the Silicon Valley still feels very much run by men and there’s a difference in ex-pectations,” says San Mateo-based image consultant Marina Sarmiento Feehan. “Women who rise to the top tend to be judged more, both by men and other women, and in order to succeed they do have to dress better.”

SAN JOSE, California — The Silicon Valley has had a men’s fashion problem dating back to its founders. From their inception, tech companies went out of their way to be different — and that meant no more business suits. Thus brilliant innovations took place in the dumpiest of outfits as leather sandals, elastic-waist jeans and old T-shirts became ubiquitous.

NEW YORK — Americans don’t just watch TV anymore; they talk about it on Twitter. From the comfort of couches, they share reactions to touchdowns and nail-biting season finales — and advertisers and networks are taking note.

Examples of Twitter’s influence abound. The recent finale of “Breaking Bad” generated a record 1.24 million tweets. The conver-sation peaked at 22,373 tweets per minute according to analytics firm SocialGuide. People used the hashtag “GoodbyeBreakingBad” nearly 500,000 times. During this year’s Super Bowl, sports fans generated 24 million tweets about the competition and nearly half of the game’s nationally televised commercials contained hashtags that encouraged viewers to tweet.

Twitter, says Debra Aho Williamson, an analyst at research firm eMarketer, “creates a community, a bond between people that doesn’t really exist without Twitter.”

As Twitter prepares for its initial public offering, the San Francisco-based company is also working hard to insert itself into the TV ad-vertising economy. In recent months, the social networking company has forged partnerships with television content owners such as CBS, MTV and the NFL through a program it calls Amplify. The platform lets content owners beam real-time video clips to Twitter users who may have seen —or could be interested in — their TV programming. It also allows marketers to communicate with viewers who saw their TV ads, extending commercial pitches to consumers’ smartphones and tablets.

TV tie-ins allow Twitter to diversify its revenue stream beyond the relatively small niche of digital advertising campaigns, a move that should appeal to potential investors. On Thursday, Twitter unsealed documents for a Wall Street debut that could take place before Thanks-giving. While the company did not reveal how much money it makes from its TV partnerships, it touted its own “strength as a second screen for television programming.”

Twitter wrote in its S-1 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that “45% of television ads shown during the Super Bowl used a hashtag to invite viewers to engage in conversation about those television ads on Twitter.”

NUSA DUA - Japan’s prime minister reached out to the lead-ers of China and South Korea at an Asia-Pacific summit, officials said Tuesday, shaking hands and exchanging greetings in a bid to overcome deep tensions.

Shinzo Abe managed a brief encounter with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday and with South Korean President Park Geun-Hye on Tuesday as all three attended group meetings of the Asia-Pacific Economic Coopera-tion forum in Indonesia.

“I understand that he shook hands with the two leaders,” Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters in Tokyo.

“I think it’s good that the lead-ers see each other repeatedly and exchange greetings,” he said, after Abe staged similar encounters with Xi and Park at a Group of 20

summit in Russia last month. There was no immediate com-

ment from China or South Korea on the encounters, which fell short of Abe’s desire for full meetings with his neighbours’ leaders.

“I want to seize on an oppor-tune time to exchange views” with them in Bali, Abe said in Tokyo on Sunday before leaving for the two-day APEC gathering, which ended on Tuesday.

“I want to send a message that the door of dialogue is always open.”

Abe has not held formal talks with the Chinese and South Ko-rean leaders since taking office last December. Tokyo’s ties with its neighbours have been strained by territorial disputes and the legacy of Japan’s 20th century wartime aggression.

Abe’s brief handshake with Xi at the G20 in Saint Petersburg represented the first encounter be-tween leaders of the two countries since relations took a nosedive

in 2012 over the ownership of uninhabited islands in the East China Sea, a row that has led to warnings of a possible armed confrontation.

The last trilateral meeting among China, Japan and South Korea was in May last year in Beijing, when the trio’s previous generation of leaders gathered.

Japanese officials in Bali and Tokyo were not explicit about any words exchanged at the APEC summit, but Japanese media played up the encounters, noting that Abe was all smiles as he sat next to Park at the start of a sum-mit session on Tuesday.

Relations between Japan and South Korea had appeared to warm in the first half of 2012.

But they turned icy in August with then South Korean president Lee Myung-Bak’s sudden visit to Seoul-controlled islands that lie in waters between the two countries.

The director general of China’s foreign ministry for Beijing region, Zhao Huimin, said on Tuesday that China, as the host of APEC 2014 and the world’s sec-ond largest economy, has started its preparations. He assured the public that the facilities to be provided will meet international standards like in Indonesia this year.

“Preparations are continuously being made. The website has also been completed and other facili-ties are being prepared accord-ing to international standards,” he said.

The Chinese delegation earlier said activities of the APEC 2014 would include the APEC CEO Summit, the APEC Business Ad-visory Council (ABAC) meeting, the China-APEC forum, APEC forum for small and medium sized businesses, APEC forum for young entrepreneurs, and a

discussion forum for ministers from relevant sectors and busi-nessmen.

China said at the APEC CEO summit this year, its delegation was the biggest, totalling 200 out of 1,200 business leaders present.

Next year, the APEC Business Council would be immediately established to involve more Chi-nese businessmen.

Huimin said he cannot disclose the details of China’s economic agenda at APEC 2014.

However, it has been reported that discussions on China’s de-tailed agenda for APEC 2014 would commence after the APEC 2013 in Indonesia and it would be consolidated with other APEC economies.

Besides Beijing, Hong Kong has also been touted as the host of the APEC Financial Ministers Meeting in September 2014.

AntaraNUSA DUA - Leaders of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation

(APEC) countries have reiterated their support for building more infrastructure in the region to improve connectivity.

“We share the view that greater connectivity will help reduce pro-duction and transportation costs, strengthen regional supply chains, and improve the business climate in the region. At the same time, infrastructure and connectivity building will create more jobs and ensure job security,” President Susilo Bambang Yudhyono said on Tuesday after the conclusion of the APEC Leaders Meeting 2013.

The economies in the Asia Pacific region reportedly need a total of US$850 billion to build infrastructure. This considerable amount of money needs to come from sizeable financial sources, which means the private sector. To meet this goal, the Indonesian Presi-dent called for closer cooperation between the government and the private sector.

“A close collaboration will result in a win-win situation, especially at a time when the global economy is yet to fully recover,” he added.

Some big players in Asia Pacific have also been stating their in-terest in investing in infrastructure building in the region. Yasushi Takase, Japan’s Deputy Director General of the Economic Affairs Bureau had stated earlier that his country was willing to support infrastructure projects in the Asia Pacific.

“Enhancing connectivity is a very important issue for the region because this is the foundation for regional economic integration. We would like to make a contribution on this particular front,” he said.

Sharing Japan’s view, a Taiwan official said his country was also interested in boosting Asia-Pacific’s infrastructure sector.

“We want to participate in any project initiated within APEC,” Chung-Ming Kuan, Taiwan’s head of the Council for Economic Planning and Development, stated on Sunday on the sidelines of the APEC meeting in Nusa Dua, Bali.

Underscoring the tightening of relations between the two regional powerhouses, Adly Mansour was greeted in Riyadh airport by the kingdom’s Defense Minister and Crown Prince Salman.

Saudi Arabia has cemented itself as the new Egyptian leadership’s staunchest supporter since Presi-dent Mohammed Morsi was ousted July 3, showering the interim gov-

ernment with $5 billion in critical aid and leading a foreign diplomacy blitz with Western nations to soften their stances toward the coup that ousted Egypt’s first democratically elected president.

Mansour met in Jiddah with King Abdullah, who was quoted in the state-run Saudi Press Agency after their meeting as saying his kingdom is “standing against any attempts to

touch Egypt’s internal affairs, par-ticularly by the terrorists.”

Arab Gulf officials and their Egyp-tian counterparts often refer to mem-bers of former President Mohammed Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood group as terrorists. More than 2,000 Broth-erhood members have been arrested in Egypt, most accused of inciting or taking part in violence.

Emboldened by Egypt’s fierce crackdown of the Brotherhood, several Arab Gulf states have also stepped up their clampdown of sus-pected Brotherhood members and Islamists, whom they see as a threat to the Gulf’s tightly run fraternity of monarchs, sheiks and emirs.

BRASILIA - Brazilian Presi-dent Dilma Rousseff demanded on Monday that Canada explain a media report that said it spied on Brazil’s Mines and Energy Ministry, and she called on the United States and its allies to stop spying over the Internet.

A Brazilian television report said on Sunday that Canada’s electronic eavesdropping agency targeted the ministry that manages the South American nation’s vast mineral and oil resources. The report was based on documents leaked by former U.S. National Security Agency contractor Ed-ward Snowden.

“That is unacceptable between nations that are supposed to be partners,” Rousseff said via Twitter. “We repudiate this cyber warfare.”

Rousseff, who canceled a planned state visit to the United

States this month because of pre-vious reports that the NSA had spied on her telephone calls and emails, noted that Sunday’s report pointed to Canada’s interests in Brazilian mining, where many Canadian companies are active.

By targeting the mines minis-try, Rousseff said, Canadian spy-ing is nothing less than industrial espionage. She has rejected U.S. explanations that NSA spying is aimed solely at identifying terror-ist threats and is not motivated by commercial interests.

“The United States and its al-lies must immediately stop their spying activity once and for all,” Rousseff tweeted.

Brazil’s Foreign Ministry sum-moned Canada’s ambassador to demand an explanation for what it called a “serious and unaccept-able violation” of Brazilian sov-ereignty and the right to privacy of its citizens and companies, a ministry statement said.

GROSSETO, Italy — A crew member of the shipwrecked Costa Concordia testified Monday that the nautical charts aboard the doomed ship were perfectly adequate to navigate the liner along its planned route, disputing claims by the captain on trial for the deaths of 32 people.

First Deck Officer Giovanni Iac-carino was the first witness called

by the prosecution in the case against Capt. Francesco Schettino, who is accused of manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandon-ing the ship before everyone was off. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Schettino is accused of taking the Concordia off its planned route on Jan. 13. 2012 and bringing it closer to the island of Giglio for so-called “tourist navigation” — a publicity-generating maneuver to

give passengers a close-up view of the Tuscan island.

Schettino has said the naviga-tional charts on board didn’t show the “Scole” reef off Giglio, which sliced a 70-meter (230-foot) gash in the ship’s hull. After the grounding, the ship listed, drifted and eventu-ally capsized off Giglio’s port.

Iaccarino was asked by one of the lawyers representing civil parties to the case if the charts on board the ship were adequate. “Yes,

for a half-mile” away, he said. The reef was about a quarter-mile from shore.

A court-ordered analysis of the dynamics of the shipwreck made clear that the charts on board weren’t adequate for the close-to-shore maneuver Schettino allegedly had ordered. It quoted one of the Concordia’s navigation chiefs as expressing concern that the charts weren’t detailed enough, even though he plotted the revised course

anyway.Iaccarino said he was in a crew-

mate’s cabin using his Playstation when the ship ran aground. He said he ran to the bridge to discover the electronic panels all registering alarms that the ship had lost propul-sion, but was surprised at the level of “calm” on the bridge.

“We told the bridge that every-thing was out of service but it didn’t seem that they realized the gravity of the situation,” he said.

Denpasar (Bali Post)—

Crowdedness occurred on a number of road sections, espe-cially those leading to schools, draws the attention of a number of people. Even, the discourse to change school hours comes to view again. One of the ways to break the congestion occurred on a number of road sections in Denpasar can be done by changing school hours, namely by putting it back or forward.

It was conveyed by a legislator of Commission B of the Denpasar House, I Wayan Suadi Putra, in his office on Monday (Oct 7). Suadi Putra revealed that all this time the crowdedness occurred during peak hours between 07:00 a.m. through 08:00 a.m. “At these hours, the road sections in South Denpasar go through severe crowdedness, especially the road sections leading to schools,” he said.

Responding to such condition, he said, students who were driv-

ing vehicle greatly contributed to the crowdedness in Denpasar. To minimize, it was required a discourse to change the school hours, particularly for junior high and high school. “Probably, this is one of the solutions to break the congestion,” said the politician from Sidakarya.

He said that during school hours as well as after school, con-dition of road sections at Sesetan, precisely at the intersection of Sesetan and Sidakarya (Pegok) was very crowded and it happened almost every day. Similarly, such severe condition also occurred at the junction of Jalan Pendidikan—Jalan Sidakarya – Jalan Dewata. “Thus, I propose to delay the school hours for 30 minutes to 1 hour, so that it can be resolved. It is just applied to junior and senior high school,” he explained.

Previously, the Denpasar Trans-portation Agency had proposed an idea to change the school hours. Even, the Transportation Agency planned to team up with a plan-

ning consultant to conduct a thorough study before making a decision.

The Head of Denpasar Trans-portation Agency, I Gede Astika, said the study was needed to as-certain to what extent the impact occurred when school hour of students was forwarded from the current schedule. “We do hope this study will give a clear outcome, whether it gives more positive impacts or adverse impacts. We need this first before making a decision,” said Astika.

Apart from involving a con-sultant team, his party had made socialization to schools through the Education Agency regarding the plan. Since the program would be dealing directly with the public, the socialization was expected to become a material of study for all parties. In other words, delivery of the program plan was expected to get inputs from all components of society, so that they could be used as a benchmark for decision making. (kmb12)

A number of farmers in Peku-tatan admitted the price was low compared to those purchased by cigarette factory. Each kilogram of dried clove was sold for about IDR 125,000-IDR 135,000. However, at the farmer level the price could

be cheaper. It happened due to long sales process passing through several buyers. From small to large collectors went through longer dis-tribution chain.

“A collector purchases at Mang-gis Sari and then is sold to Pupuan.

The buyer in Pupuan sold it again to Singaraja and it is very long, isn’t it? This needs to be intensi-fied in order the price is not much different,” said a member of Com-mission B of the Jembrana House, Nyoman Sandiyasa. The legislator from Pekutatan admitted the poten-tial of clove in Jembrana was quite promising for plantation.

Moreover, there was a policy for factories not to import cloves and empowering the domestic products. Of the demand com-

ing to some 120,000 tons a year, Jembrana could just produce 80 percent, or approximately 100,000 tons. Besides, farmers had not enjoyed the same price as in the factory.

Meanwhile, the potential land for planting clove reached nearly 3,000 hectares, but only hundreds of hectares that had been productive and they were mostly located in Pekutatan. His party had also sug-gested the making of clove ware-houses in each county, including in

Jembrana. Thus, it would facilitate the direct sales to factory and farm-ers obtained better price.

Additionally, the government should also encourage farmers to intensify their land for planting cloves. Many farmers originally planting cloves then replaced their plant because the price of clove dropped some time ago. Lately, when the price of clove started to rise, the plant became the leading commodity and farmers planted the clove again. (kmb26)

WASHINGTON - The United States launches on Tuesday a new $100 bill that comes with, for the iconic greenback, a new touch of color, as well as special features to foil counterfeiters.

In its first remake since 1996, the $100 banknote, which takes a key role in cash transactions for everyone from small traders to big drug traffickers worldwide, sports the traditional portrait of American Revolution-ary War statesman Benjamin Franklin on the front.

On the back, too, it depicts Philadelphia’s Indepen-dence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776.

But it adds a yellowish “100” in one corner and, next to Franklin, a tan quill and bronze-colored inkwell that holds inside it the Philadelphia Liberty Bell in changing colors from darker brown to green, depending on the angle the note is held.

Cutting vertically through the middle of the ban-knote is a blue security ribbon that shows numerous small Liberty Bells and 100s printed in darker blue, which appear to move as the note is shifted.

While the feature appears like a hologram, the 100s and bells are actually microscopic in size and are enlarged by millions of micro-lenses printed on the note which make the figures appear to move, said Sonja Danburg, program manager in charge of currency education at the Federal Reserve.

The new design comes primarily to fight the in-creasing sophistication of counterfeiters, Danburg told AFP.

“It’s our most global banknote. Between a half and two-thirds of them are circulating outside of the United States, and it’s also the most counterfeited of US de-nominations outside of the United States,” she said.

“We want to stay ahead of counterfeiting threats, we want to protect the public.”

Danburg said that counterfeiters, from small-time printers to state-sponsored crooks, remain a challenge though their production is small in contrast to the total amount of greenbacks in global circulation -- about $80 million last year, compared with about $1 trillion in US notes circulating.

The new $100 banknote, printed on the traditional cotton and linen paper with green and black ink, has other foils for copiers.

For instance, the design includes showing the back of Independence Hall, rather than the building’s front as before, so copiers cannot just use their old printing plates.

The government has printed 3.5 billion of the new banknotes, which will hit the streets in the United States on Tuesday.

It will take some days before banks that receive them from the Federal Reserve ship them to branches and counterparts around the world.

But the Federal Reserve wants to make sure users around the world recognize the new design as valid and do not reject them.

“People are relying on it not only as a medium of exchange for business or consumer transactions. It also offers a store of value. We want to make sure that everybody who is relying on US currency maintains that faith and confidence in it.”

The two-day Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) event at a five-star resort on the tropical island of Bali is aimed at breaking down trade barriers among all 21 member economies, but rival agendas by the world powers have overshadowed the talks.

Filling in for US President Barack Obama, Secretary of State John Kerry has lobbied for the quick signing of a mega free trade pact grouping 12 APEC nations but not China and summit host Indonesia.

“We need modern rules for a chang-ing road, rules that keep pace with the speed of today’s markets,” Kerry said in a speech on the sidelines of the sum-mit on Monday that was in large part a hard-sell for the planned Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Kerry was set to meet the leaders of the 11 other nations involved in the TPP on Tuesday afternoon in a bid to hit an

against-the-odds deadline set by Obama for a deal by the end of this year.

The United States has championed the TPP as setting “gold standards” to deal with complex changes to the 21st-century economy, such as how to police cloud computing and patents.

But China and even some develop-ing nations included in the TPP have expressed concern that it will set down trade rules primarily benefiting the rich-est countries and most powerful firms.

“China will commit itself to build-ing a trans-Pacific regional cooperation framework that benefits all parties,” Chinese President Xi Jinping said in a speech following Kerry at the APEC business forum.

“We should enhance coordination... deepen regional integration and avoid the spaghetti bowl effect so as to build closer partnerships across the Pacific.”

Xi’s comments were interpreted in

China’s state-run media on Tuesday as direct criticism of the TPP.

“The Trans-Pacific Partnership, fea-turing confidential talks and the highest free trade standard beyond mere lower tariffs, is widely considered a new step for the US to dominate the economy in the Asia-Pacific region,” the China Daily newspaper said in a front-page report on Xi’s speech.

Indonesia also signalled its irritation at the huge focus on TPP at the APEC sum-mit, shunting the planned meeting on Tues-day afternoon of the 12 nations involved to a hotel outside the official venue.

“We mind actually, and one of the rea-sons, at the very least, is we don’t want any coverage that will overshadow APEC,” an Indonesian government official told AFP, when asked about why the TPP countries had been told to meet outside.

Meanwhile, China and Indonesia are involved in plans for a rival free trade pact involving 16 countries around the region and being spearheaded by the As-sociation of Southeast Asian Nations.

Negotiations for that pact are expected to be discussed at an East Asia Summit in Brunei this week.

DENPASAR - For more than a year subak in Bali has been in-cluded in the world cultural heritage (WCH). However, it is considered to have not brought in any benefits. On the one hand, the inclusion of subak in the WCH can be the pride and blessing for Bali if it is indeed supported by real programs to main-tain and preserve the subak.

But on the other hand, the WCH status is feared as it can even be disastrous. If Bali cannot maintain the existence of subak amid the land conversion and expansion of the tourism industry going on mas-sively, exploitatively and greedily with the land and the environment, the status of subak as WCH can be evaluated and revoked back by the UNESCO. It was revealed in the roundtable discussion on the topic “A Year after Subak Included in the WCH” in Denpasar, Wednesday (Oct 2).

Chairman of the Society of Agri-business and Agro-Industry (MAI) of Bali Chapter, AA Ngurah Alit Wiraputra, judged the government was still not serious to maintain and preserve the existence of subak denoting one of the uniqueness and

strengths owned by Bali in agri-culture with all kinds of cultural richness that could shore up the Bali tourism industry. Ironically, after over a year the subak included in the WCH, there had been no real action and programs that had actually been touching the subak.

He did not deny the international award as WCH given to subak was the pride and blessing for Bali. Unfortunately, it was not more than just a reward without being fol-lowed up with an effort to preserve subak. “Inclusion of subak in the WCH can be a blessing and calam-ity. If we are not able to preserve the subak amid the threat of massive land conversion so for the sake of tourism interest, the status of subak as WCH can be revoked. If this happens it will certainly become a bad track record for Bali. Inter-national community will assume us as a nation that cannot maintain the noble culture inherited over the centuries. It will certainly tarnish the image of Bali,” said Wiraputra doubling as Chairman of the Ba-dung Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin).

Challenge to preserve subak and agriculture in wider context in Bali was very heavy. Moreover, the

government still lacked of budget. Necessarily, said the Bali legisla-tor candidate of Badung region, the government had to increase the agricultural budget and design a real program to implement the subak into the WCH. The government ide-ally involved private entrepreneurs having a concern with the field and increased the active role of com-munity and agricultural technology. “Incentives for farmers that can maintain their farmland should also be increased and there must be a real program for community empower-ment,” he said while questioning to what extent the Management Council of Bali Cultural Heritage had been working to follow up the inclusion of subak in the WCH.

Wayan Swastika from the Den-pasar Agriculture, Food Crops and Horticulture Agency did not dismiss if many subak areas in Denpasar ‘collapsed’, namely converted into residential areas, tourist accommo-dation and others. “Problem of the urban agriculture in Denpasar has indeed been very complex, chiefly related to the increasingly decrease in farmland as well as the massive and uncontrollable land conver-sion,” he said.

Denpasar Municipality gave tax

relief in the form of subsidies for the land designated as green belt, but in fact such an effort could not stem the rate of increasingly mas-sive land conversion. On the other hand, there were many small farm-ers (with land less than 5,000 sqm) whose condition was very worry-ing. They were faced with difficult choices namely maintaining the farmland with unsatisfactory results or selling the land or converting the land with tantalizing results. Such condition also kindled the rampant land conversion in Denpasar. Even, many subak areas had disappeared and only left a memory or name-plate.

“Now, only 41 subak areas re-main to survive. They totally spread across 2,597 hectares, while the disappearing ones almost reach 150 hectares. The subak areas in critical condition and nearly disappear also remain a lot. On the other hand, the land fertility has also been declin-ing and water discharge is getting smaller. So, it is difficult to develop the agriculture in Denpasar,” he said while adding that his party focused on the agriculture and provided horticulture training to deal with the problems.

Head of the Bali Institute for

Agricultural Technology (BPTP), AANB Kamandalu, said that his party also attempted to assist the government in terms of the ag-ricultural technology so the Bali agriculture could get the touch of technology. Challenges to preserve subak and develop the agriculture in Bali related to the restrictedness of land owned by farmers. According to him, the results of survey indi-cated that ownership of farmland in Bali only reached 0.2 to 0.3 hectares (2,000-3,000 square meters). “Our problem is the decrease of land, so farmers must be equipped with technology,” he said.

He hoped all parties had a con-cern in preserving subak and real-izing the subak community em-powerment programs after it was included in the WCH. His party also suggested the government to make collaboration with local universities having the faculty of agriculture to jointly provide mentoring and trans-fer of the agricultural technologies to farmers. “Community and farmer empowerment programs of Bali government such as Gerbangsadu and Simantri must also be guarded, evaluated and improved through fa-cilitation so this program will be on target,” he concluded. NUSA DUA - By using solar power, Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport will become one of the world’s environ-mentally friendly aerodromes, an official said on Tuesday.

“All solar panels are expected to be installed at the airport by at least early 2015 because we will be commencing a feasibility study at the end of this year,” PT Angkasa Pura I Corporate Sec-retary Farid Indra Nugraha revealed while signing a cooperation agreement with the Sintesa Group-SunEdison at the Grand Nikko Hotel on Tuesday.

The collaboration is part of the framework used in green tech-nology, which will be initiated by the U.S. Commercial Services. Meanwhile, Sintesa Group CEO Shinta Widjaja Kamdani said the solar panels capable of producing 15 megawatt (MW) of electricity will be installed at the Ngurah Rai Airport with an investment of US$45 million. She further pointed out that using solar panels will help reduce the use of electricity generated from fossils.

“It is expected to reduce carbon emissions by up to 200,000 tons,” Kamdani stated.

In addition to the Ngurah Rai Airport, airports in Surabaya, Makassar and Balikpapan are also expected to be converted into environment friendly airports later.

“The results of tests conducted on AM’s urine and hair are all negative,” BNN spokesman Senior Commissioner Sumirat Dwiyanto revealed at a press conference on Tuesday.

He stated that the BNN would take further steps to follow up the discovery of methamphetamine and marijuana in the working room of the former chief judge.

“The locations where pieces of evidence were found and where AM was arrested are different. This is what we are going to in-vestigate to find out who actually owns the drug stash,” Dwiyanto said.

Anti-graft agency, the Cor-ruption Eradication Commission (KPK) had discovered the drugs in the working room of the chief judge when it conducted searches

on Thursday and handed them over to the BNN on Friday for conducting checks to verify if they were really narcotic drugs.

The BNN later confirmed that they were really metham-phetamine, which was found in the form green and purple pills and marijuana which was found rolled into four parts, with one of them having been used.

Dwiyanto further pointed out that the pill form of metham-phetamine was categorized as new in Indonesia as so far it had been distributed in the form of crystals.

He said using marijuana or methamphetamine violated Nar-cotic Law Number 35 of 2009.

Akil Mochtar has been named a suspect by the KPK for al-legedly receiving bribes linked

to elections of district heads in Gunung Mas, Central Kalimantan province and in Lebak, Banten province.

He was caught red-handed at his official residence, along with Chairun Nisa, a parliamentary member from Golkar Party and businessman Cornelius Nalau.

Cash of up to Rp5.7 billion was confiscated by the KPK from Mochtar¿s official car with the number plate ‘RI 9’ that was parked at his house.

KPK has also named Chairun Nisa and Cornelius Nalau sus-pects, along with the district head of Gunung Mas, Hamid Bintih, Tubagus Chairi Wardan, the husband of the Tangerang Selatan district head and Airin Diany, the brother of Banten governor Ratu Atut Chosiyah.

AntaraJAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has

searched the office of Banten Governor Ratu Atut Chosiyah’s younger brother, Tubagus Chaeri Wardana, in connection with his alleged involvement in a bribery case.

“It’s true. From 5 p.m. yesterday till 1 a.m. today, KPK investigators have searched the office of TCW (Tubagus Chaeri Wardana),” said spokesman for KPK Johan Budi on Tuesday.

The office of PT Bali Pasific Pragama, the contractor of a number of infrastructure projects, is located on the 12th floor of The East Building in Mega Kuningan, South Jakarta.

“The investigators have confiscated 15 boxes of documents,” Johan Budi said.

Tubagus Chaeri Wardana alias Wawan has been named a suspect for allegedly having bribed former Constitutional Court Chief Judge Akil Mochtar in connection with a dispute over Lebak district head’s election results.

KPK has confiscated Rp1 billion in Rp100 thousand and Rp50 thousand notes, put into a travel bag from the house of the parents of Susi Tur Handayani, who would hand over Wawan’s money to Akil Mochtar.

The panel of Constitutional Court judges, led by Akil Mochtar on October 1, 2013, decided to grant the appeal of Amir Hamzah-Kasmin from Golkar Party, following their loss and order the General Elections Commission chapter of Lebak district in Banten province to repeat the vote for the election of Lebak district’s head.

Wawan’s lawyer on Monday denied his client’s involvement in the legal district head’s election.

He also said Susi is not the lawyer of a conflicting party in the dispute in Lebak head’s election but a lawyer for a party in the dispute over Serang mayor’s election.

The post of Serang mayor is now held by Tubagus Haerul Jaman, who is also Ratu Atut’s half-brother.

Several relatives of Ratu Atut are holding various government posi-tions in Banten province and also at a national level - Hikmat Tomet, who is her husband, is a member of the House of Representatives’ Commission V; Andhika Hazrumy, the first son of Ratu Atut, is a member of the Regional Representatives Council of Banten province; and Ade Rosi Khairunnisa, wife of Andhika, is a deputy speaker of the Serang city legislative assembly.

Andiara Aprilia Hikmat, the second child of Ratu Atut, meanwhile, is a candidate for House of Representatives membership, while Tanto Warsono Arban, Andiara¿s husband, is also a candidate for the House of Representatives membership.

Heryani, step mother of Atut, is currently the head of Pandeglang district and Ratu Tatu Chassanah, sister of Ratu Atut, is deputy head of Serang district.

Ratu Atut’s step brother, Tubagus Chaerul Jaman, meanwhile, is the mayor of Serang, while Airin Rachmi Diany, wife of Wawan, is the mayor of Tangerang Selatan.

KPK has named Akil Mochtar as a suspect in connection with the disputes over the elections of district heads of Gunung Mas in Central Kalimantan province and Lebak in Banten province.

It has also named parliamentary member Chairun Nisa from Golkar Party and Gunung Mas district head Hambit Bintih and Cornelis Nalau, a businessman, as suspects in connection with Akil’s case.

KPK has confiscated S$284,050 and US$22 thousand in connec-tion with the case.

In the case of election dispute in Lebak, Akil and Susi Tur Handayani have been named suspects for allegedly receiving bribes while Tugagus Chaery Wardana has been named a suspect for paying the bribes.

Banten province has so far been known as the stronghold of Golkar Party, which is one of the biggest political parties in the country.

JAKARTA - Former Constitution Court Chief Justice Akil Mochtar has been tested negative for narcotic drugs consumption by the National Narcotics Agency (BNN).

It was the first time the divers had been able to reach the hull, and authorities said 38 more bodies were recovered, raising the death toll from last Thursday’s tragedy to 232. Scores more are believed missing; most, if not all, were Eritreans trying to reach Europe in search of asylum and a better life.

“They unpacked a wall of people,” said Navy Capt. Paolo Trucco of the deep sea specialists. The bodies “were so entwined, one with the other, it is indescribable. They were so trapped they were difficult to pull out.”

Deep sea divers in their weighted suits and sturdy port-holed helmets were able to spend up to 30 minutes at a time at the site of the wreck 47 meters (154 feet) below the surface — much more than a scuba diver’s typical seven to 10 minutes at that depth.

This allowed them to remove debris that was still floating around

inside narrow passage ways to reach the vessel’s hull. “Mattresses, blan-kets, stairs. Anything that would float. Imagine if you put a house in a centrifuge and you see what winds up in the air. That is what happened,” Trucco said.

Diver Marco Presti said the bod-ies were packed together when the ship capsized, and he and his col-leagues had to pull each out by the arms. “One diver after the other, we passed them from one to the other, and placed them on the stern of the boat,” he said.

Coast Guard Capt. Filippo Marini estimated it would take two more days to complete the search and recovery mission.

Only 155 of the migrants survived the fiery shipwreck. Survivors have said there were at least 500 people aboard the 18-meter-long (59-foot) boat when it sank.

Diver Riccardo Nobile, who did multiple dives on Sunday when 83

bodies were recovered in easier to reach areas, said he waited for more than an hour among the corpses on a recovery boat as other divers took their turns. Divers from the Navy, Coast Guard, Carabinieri military police and the fire department have done rotations.

“It was difficult to look straight at their faces, to see their wounds, see their tormented expressions, their outstretched arms,” Nobile said. “It was extremely difficult. But this is our job.”

The ship had arrived within sight of Lampedusa, a tiny island that is Italy’s southernmost point, after two days of sailing from Libya when a fire set to draw the attention of potential rescuers sparked a panic on board, leading the vessel to capsize.

Tens of thousands of migrants from Africa and the Middle East try to cross the Mediterranean Sea each year, seeking a better life in Europe. Hundreds die in the process.

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico — Mexican government officials and event organizers on Monday blamed the driver of a monster truck for losing control and plowing into a crowd of spectators, killing eight and injuring 79. Motor-sports experts, however, pointed at the organizers, saying the setup of the state-sponsored show was blatantly deficient and life-threatening.

Organizers of the “Extreme Aeroshow” said hundreds of families had gathered without permission in what was supposed to be the pit area at one end of a makeshift arena in a park in Chihuahua, capital of the border state of Chihuahua.

The pit area was unprotected by any barrier and sat feet from where the monster truck known as “Big Show” was crushing a pair of old cars, leaping into the air and rolling over their hoods and roofs. Video of the accident shows the truck coming down hard off the second car, bouncing and then speeding out of control into the crowd.

One organizer said the spectators hadn’t been moved out of the pit zone before the show because “crowd management is very difficult.”

The safety situation was “about as bad as it could get,” said Marty Garza, spokesman for the Monster Truck Racing Association, the pri-mary safety organization for the industry in the United States.

“There was some pretty blatant disregard for the safety of specta-tors,” he said. “There is no excuse for why the spectators were situated as they were, period.”

Ramallah - Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas on Monday condemned an attack on a nine-year-old Israeli girl the day before in the West Bank. “We oppose on principle aggression against anyone, and the spilling of blood,” he told a group of Israeli MPs visiting his headquarters in Ramallah.

The girl, Noam Glick, was variously described as having been shot or stabbed in a Sunday attack in her garden in the Psagot settlement near Ramallah. Police said it was probably a “terrorist” attack.

Medics at the Jerusalem hospital where she was treated said her condition was improving. Abbas spoke as Israeli forces closed in on an area in the West Bank town of Al-Bira, near Ramallah, in an arrest operation linked to the Psagot attack, an AFP correspondent said.

Abbas objected to the unilateral Israeli operation, insisting the Pal-estinian Authority should take responsibility for finding the culprits.

“The Israeli army’s incursions are unjustified. There’s security coordination with us, so why carry out these raids that harm (our ef-forts)?” Abbas said.

MANILA, Philippines — Jeremy Lin easily stole the spotlight as the Houston Rockets practiced on Tuesday for this week’s first NBA preseason game in the basketball-obsessed Philippines. Lin was mobbed by reporters and photographers on a Manila basketball court, a day after the Rockets and Indiana Pacers arrived in the Philippine capital for Thursday’s game.

“I’m excited to play here and in Taiwan,” said Lin, the league’s first American-born player of Taiwanese descent. “I think the fans don’t get a chance to often watch an NBA game live, so hopefully they’ll really enjoy the experience and I think we’re going to definitely enjoy it as well.”

He said he’s had a taste of the “electric environment” of the Philippines, where basketball hoops are mounted in every avail-able space and it tops the list of countries following the NBA on Facebook and Twitter outside the United States. Lin said his Tai-wanese parents told him good things about the Philippines.

“I’m glad to see and feel the warmth they showed to me in person when I got the chance to walk in the mall last night. Everyone was polite, respectful and I was really blown away,” he said. He said he was thankful for a chance “to inspire people, especially my fellow Asians.”

Last season was Lin’s first full season in the NBA, and he started all 82 games for Houston. In the previous two seasons, he played less than half seasons for the New York Knicks, when Linsanity exploded on the basketball world, and the Golden State Warriors.

“They were different times in my life,” he

said, comparing his tenures with the Rockets and Knicks. “Different stages, different roles, different systems. ... I can’t really compare the two. My goal is just to get better every year.”

Adjusting to his second full season, he said “There’s always some difficulties and hurdles but I think that’s part of the natural progression.”

Bali is a bijou island, but the con-tent of traditional values, arts, history and culture is not as small as the area. Artistic heritage, history and culture almost spread throughout the nine regencies and city existing on the Island of the Gods. The search on the heritage, arts and cultural relics of this time is to Yeh Pulu Relief.

Relief of the ancient rock stone is located at the Bedulu (Bedahulu) Village, Blahbatuh Subdistrict, Gianyar Regency. Location to Tampaksiring and Kintamani is only about 40 minutes drive from Denpasar City. The entrance to the tourist attraction of holy water is not far from the main road east of Goa Gajah Temple, to the right, into the village street. Visitors should be careful because there are many road junctions with-out a clue heading for the object of Yeh Pulu Relief, or ask the way to local residents.

The monument in the form of relief becoming the main attraction to tourists, especially foreign tourists, was discov-ered in 1925 by a courtier or Ubud Royal family. The name was taken from the barrel (or container of rice in the past) located at the central axis of purified water nestling in the

west of the relief. The word yeh in Balinese language means water and pulu means a barrel.

The appeal of this monument is not only because of the uniqueness of relief sculpture immortalized on the rock stone wall of the hill,

but also due to the spread of rice field view along the two-hundred-meters and the sound of clinking water on the left-right path to loca-tion is always neatly trimmed and maintained sustainably, emanating a natural beauty.

With such a natural atmosphere, the clear and the sharpness of splashing water are always flow-ing along the trench making the ambience around this object really peaceful and enchanting. On that account, it is not mistaken if the

niches (caves) in southern relief suspected as the hermitage of the last Balinese ancient King before the collapse of Bali to Majapahit administration in 1343.

Relief with magical nuance and meaningful is 25 meters long and 2

meters high. Many researches conducted by experts from home and overseas to recognize the implicit meaning behind the wall relief of the rock cliffs on the hills. As consequence, it drove many commentaries and analysis to uncover the mys-tery behind the veil of the true meaning of the relief. Overall, the theme of this story recounts the life in the forest atmosphere and daily life in the ancient kingdom of Bali. In addition to the Balinese classical carvings, this monument also has niches of Bedahulu Royal Hermitage before his death against the army of the Majapahit kingdom in 1343 AD.

Yeh Pulu Relief poses one of the many historical classical monuments of Bali originating in ancient Bali (14th century AD) retaining full knowledge of art, which until now is still sustainable and be cared by the members of Subak, as one of the classical organizations that in particular organizes farmers and manage all aspects of rice field cultivation.

Description of life in Bali ancient kingdom

“I always knew that this year, after a very tough year in 2012, the Olympics (and winning Wimbledon), was going to be a bit more quiet,” the Swiss told reporters in Shanghai on Monday after winning his first-round doubles match with little-known Chinese Zhang Ze.

“I expected myself probably not to be as successful and as busy playing matches and tournaments.

“My mindset now is, okay, next year is going to be a great year again where I’m not going to have that many points to defend, especially at some very key moments where I consider myself a favourite. “For that reason I’m really looking forward to 2014

already.”Federer, who won the last of his record 17 grand

slam titles at Wimbledon 15 months ago before scoop-ing a silver at the London Games, went through the 2013 season without reaching a major final for the first time since 2002 and his only success has been at the low-key Halle tournament.

He lost in the Australian Open semi-finals to Andy Murray, fell at the last-eight stage to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the French Open, suffered a shock second-round defeat at Wimbledon to journeyman Sergiy Stakhovsky before losing to Tommy Robredo in the U.S. Open fourth round last month.

“I didn’t want to focus too much on what hap-pened the last two months. The U.S. Open, I hardly ever thought about it if I look back, at the Robredo match,” he said. “It wasn’t my day. It’s one of those things you just want to move on from.

“I think my game’s been coming back, which has been very important. Now it’s about staying positive and working hard every single day. That’s been the mindset.”

She hit five aces and took advantage of eight double faults by Scheepers to set up a second-round match against Polona Her-cog of Slovenia, who beat Petra Cetkovska of the Czech Republic 6-4, 5-7, 6-1.

Also, Vania King of the United States ousted fourth-seeded Flavia Pennetta of Italy 3-6, 7-5, 6-0, and Japanese vet-eran Kimiko Date-Krumm dispatched seventh-seeded Laura Robson of Britain 6-4, 6-4.

Other winners included No. 6-seeded Madison Keys of the United States and No. 9 Kristina Mladenovic of France.

Looking back is a waste of time, as far as Roger Federer is concerned. While tennis fans and pundits are obsessed with his below-par performance at the four majors this year which has left him in danger of missing the cut for the season-ending ATP finale for the first time since 2001, Federer has already put a positive spin on his 2013 trials and tribulations.

Benfica’s 1960s great Eusebio has weighed in to the argument, saying he was upset by what he considered to be an unfair comparison because he had played fewer matches than Ronaldo.

“I am saddened because we can’t make that comparison. It’s a mistake because I played (around) 60 matches to score that amount (41 goals),” Eusebio told Portuguese national television.

Ronaldo reached 43 goals in 106 internationals after his hat-trick earned Portugal a 4-2 comeback win over Northern Ireland in last month’s World Cup qualifier. “This is historic. I’d scored a lot of hat-tricks for Real Madrid but never any for Portugal,” he said after the game.

“Going above Eusebio in the scor-ers’ list was a natural thing to happen and it was only a matter of time but still I am really proud,” the smiling player said while showing off the match ball.

Ronaldo has the chance to add to his tally on Friday in the home quali-fier against Israel as Portugal seek to secure at least second place in Group F and a berth in the playoffs for next year’s World Cup in Brazil.

While some of the football-mad Portuguese will angrily tell you not to compare the two because judging to-day’s football against that of the 1960s is flawed, there are plenty of arguments on each side.

SIMPLE MATHSRonaldo, 28, is set to rewrite Portu-

gal’s soccer statistics as he is only four goals behind top scorer Pauleta and 21 matches away from the most-capped player Luis Figo. Striker Pauleta has said he does not consider himself equal to Eusebio, Ronaldo and Figo.

Still, simple maths tell you Euse-bio’s goal rate is the best, with the ‘Black Panther’ grabbing 0.6 goals per match compared to Ronaldo’s 0.4 and

Pauleta’s 0.5. Eusebio, 71, believes Ronaldo has it easier than him.

“Now, after all these years, someone else scores (that many goals) but obvi-ously that happens because today it is easier to play some of these teams. I never got to play against Liechtenstein or Azerbaijan,” he said. Portugal have also been to the major tournaments more often with Ronaldo.

He has shone for his country at five major competitions, including the Euro 2004 final where they lost at Lisbon’s Luz stadium to Greece.

Portugal also finished fourth at the 2006 World Cup in Germany and reached the semi-finals of Euro 2012.

Eusebio played at only one major tournament - the 1966 World Cup in England where he was the overall top scorer as Portugal grabbed a best-ever third place. Portugal and Real Madrid’s Pepe prefers his team mate.

“I hope Eusebio forgives me but, for me, the best player ever is Ron-aldo. Despite his relatively young age, what he has already achieved for the ‘Seleccao’ leaves no doubts,” he told sports daily o Jogo. “Because of the goals he has scored and the clubs he has represented Ronaldo will leave a mighty footprint.”

Gus Poyet has been appointed Sunderland manager on a two-year-contract, the Premier League club said on Tuesday. The Uruguayan replaces controversial Italian Paolo Di Canio, who was sacked last month by bottom-of-the-table Sunderland following a 3-0 defeat at West Bromwich Albion.

The former international midfielder, who played for Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, was sacked by Championship side Brighton and Hove Albion in June for an undisclosed breach of club discipline.

“We analysed a wide range of candidates and believe that Gus’s track record, experience, commitment and passion make him the right man to take us forward,” Sunderland chairman Ellis Short said in a statement on the club’s website (www.safc.com).

Poyet, 45, has been tasked with ensuring Sunder-land’s Premier League survival after a dreadful start to the season during which they have managed only one point from their first seven matches.

Kevin Ball took temporary charge after Di Canio’s dismissal, and Sunderland beat third-tier Peterborough United in the League Cup but lost to Liverpool and Manchester United in the league.

Di Canio was brought in by Sunderland in March to replace Martin O’Neill when the club looked almost certainties for relegation. He managed to keep Sunder-land in the Premier League but the side won only three of his 13 matches in charge.

British media said the Sunderland players were unhappy with Di Canio’s abrasive management style and public criticism of them but the Italian denied reports of a training ground bust-up following defeat to West Brom.

Poyet was an early favourite for the role, despite his acrimonious parting with Brighton, whom he led to the Championship (second tier) playoffs.

He was suspended following the playoff semi-final defeat to Crystal Palace in May, and found out he had been fired as manager while working as a pundit on live television.

LONDON — England will be without left back Ashley Cole for its penultimate World Cup qualifier against Montenegro on Friday.

Cole complained of a rib problem during Chelsea’s Premier League victory at Norwich on Sunday and scans Monday confirmed he won’t be fit for the match at Wembley Stadium.

But he could be available for the key qualifier against Poland next week after receiving treatment at Chelsea.

Arsenal’s Kieran Gibbs has been added to Roy Hodgson’s squad, although Leighton Baines is expected to start against Montenegro after his strong start to the season for Everton.

Reuters ROME - Italy’s soccer authori-

ties have ordered AC Milan to play its next game behind closed doors and fined the club 50,000 euros ($67,900) following abu-sive chants by supporters against southern club Napoli.

During Sunday’s match against Juventus in Turin, hundreds of Milan supporters shouted “We are not Neapolitans”, a chant the Naples daily Il Mattino said re-flected long-standing contempt for the south by northern clubs.

In the fiercely territorial world of Italian soccer, abusive rivalry between supporters of clubs in the rich north and those in the poorer south is not uncommon

and Milan officials reacted with shock to the verdict by Serie A sporting judges.

“To say I’m furious would be putting it mildly,” Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani told reporters. “I understand that rac-ism is a big problem, a problem everywhere in the world but ter-ritorial discrimination is another thing entirely.”

The sentence means that Milan, in 12th place in the Serie A stand-ings after a 3-2 loss to Juventus on Sunday, will play its next home game on Oct. 19 against Udinese behind closed doors.

The Serie A sporting judg-es also banned Milan defender Philippe Mexes for four matches for violent conduct after video

evidence showed him punching Juventus player Giorgio Chiellini as Juventus was taking a corner. The punch was not seen by the referee but Mexes was sent off for a second yellow card.

Cabaye missed the start of the season and bore the brunt of the fans’ frustrations as he tried to push through a last-minute transfer. His lack of match fitness meant he was overlooked by France coach Didier Deschamps for a friendly against Belgium in August and he was then left out of World Cup quali-fiers against Belarus and Georgia

last month.“Those are the ups and downs of

football, but it wasn’t easy staying at home when the national team was playing,” Cabaye said Monday at France’s training camp. France hosts Australia in a friendly on Friday and Finland in its final World Cup qualifier four days later.

Asked if he had been wor-

ried about his future with France, Cabaye replied frankly. “Yes, of course, things change so quickly. Even when you’re in (the squad) there are no guarantees you’ll stay,” he said. “It’s better to be called up as often as possible rather than stay-ing at home for whatever reasons. I’m full of determination and con-fidence and hope to be in the team on Friday and Tuesday.”

He has not played a full 90 minutes since the penultimate game of last sea-son for Newcastle. “But I’ve trained a lot. I feel good, I lost weight over the summer and I’m ready to play,” he

said. “Maybe not 90 minutes in both games, but I feel good. I played most of the game at the weekend.”

Newcastle coach Alan Pardew accused Arsenal of showing a lack of respect by lodging a bid for Ca-baye only hours before his team’s opening Premier League game against on Aug. 19 — a 4-0 loss against Manchester City.

Cabaye missed it because Pardew said he wasn’t in the right frame of mind to play, and he only made his first appearance as a substitute at home to Fulham 12 days later, amid reports that he had refused to train.

Some fans jeered him when he came on, although others backed him.

“My feelings haven’t changed. What happened at Newcastle ... their (the fans’) feelings corre-sponded to what (message) the club wanted to get across as well. Given that I haven’t spoken about it and won’t explain what happened, they (the fans) chose sides,” he said. “But that’s part of a career, you accept that and I don’t hold a grudge. The most important thing for me are the two games coming up and the rest of the season with Newcastle.”

OSAKA, Japan — Wimbledon final-ist Sabine Lisicki of Germany outlasted Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa 7-5, 7-6 (1) to reach the second round of the Japan Open on Tuesday. Lisicki struggled with a right wrist injury after making her first Grand Slam singles final, and has yet to win more than two matches in a row.

(kmb26)

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine.

Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

(kmb31)

76 foreign language films to compete for Oscar

sen by their respective home countries.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who pre-sented the results of the APEC Summit 2013, which was held in Nusa Dua, Bali, from October 1 to 8, stated that the APEC leaders’ commitment would be in line with providing opportunities to all parties.

“Through long discussions, we have agreed on a number of strategic points. We have common views that all APEC economies must be able to enjoy equal benefits stemming from the cooperation among APEC economies,” he said, while being flanked by 21 APEC leaders.

Bogor Goals were agreements formulated during the APEC Summit held in Bogor in 1994, which was one of the main agendas discussed at the latest APEC Summit in Bali.

AntaraNUSA DUA - Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders agreed on Tuesday on the urgent

need for accelerating efforts to achieve the “Bogor Goals” set out during the APEC Summit held in 1994 in Bogor, Indonesia.

by 2020 are liberalization of trade and investment, business facilitation and economic and technical co-operation.

The agreement also includes support for the comple-tion of the Doha round, boosting efficiency of logistics chain by up to 10 percent and implementing a reduction in barriers for environmental-friendly goods by 2015.

Leaders also expressed their commitment to fighting protectionism, which hinders the world’s economic trade and growth.

“We have agreed to extend our commitment till 2016 and reaffirmed our efforts to alleviate protectionism and trade limitations,” said SBY.

Twenty-one economic leaders of the APEC region also expressed their determination to not limit trade with domestically oriented policies.

“With the commitment, we have reiterated the importance of hampering protectionist measures through the World Trade Organisation (WTO) mechanism and other international or-ganisations,” he said.

Director General of WTO Roberto Azevedo, who came as an invitee to the summit, earlier encouraged the 21 APEC economic leaders to adopt a multilateral trade system.

“APEC consists of countries that are big economic players and traders. I believe they have always actively supported a multilateral trade system,” he said, after attending a panel session with APEC ministers on Saturday.

Indonesia has also been encouraging an increase in mul-tilateral service trade in the Asia-Pacific region and the de-velopment of APEC connectivity to support connectivity in ASEAN and Indonesia.

APEC is an economic cooperation forum involving 21 econo-mies in the Asia-Pacific region aimed at promoting free trade and economic cooperation in the region.

The forum was established in 1989 and the summit in Bali is the second hosted by Indonesia after the event in Bogor, West Java, in 1994.
