NEW YORK — Most of the time when you hear a Bon Jovi song in a store, it’s playing over a loudspeaker. But Thursday night, around 100 lucky fans were treated to seeing the New Jersey-born rocker perform a bunch of his hits during an intimate acoustic set inside a Kenneth Cole store in Soho.

The performance, as New York Fashion Week began, was part of Common Thread, an initiative Jon Bon Jovi started with Cole that pro-vides a platform for the new designers and musicians.

“Despite all the social me-dia and the ability for people

to have a voice, it’s so hard for them to find an audience for that voice,” Cole told The Associated Press on Thursday. “So tonight is kind of the two of them coming together, and that’s what the common thread.”

Before the show, the 52-year old musician expressed his feeling that while the technology for making mu-sic has gotten simpler, he sees no substitute for raw performance as the true mea-sure of talent.

“You can have all the bells and whistles of production these days, and these guys that are out there singing on

the Grammys with auto-tune. I always used to say, ‘I’m going to hand you my guitar, sing me something, and I want to see you play it.’ This is that night, so we’ll have a little bit of fun and give back,” Bon Jovi said.

As for the set, the singer opened with “Who Says You Can’t Go Home,” and included his megahits Livin’ On A Prayer,” and ‘Wanted: Dead or Alive,” before an-nouncing up-and-coming artist Cole Redding. Other performers included coun-try artist Rodney Atkins and singer-songwriter, Rose Falcon. (ap)

Cumberbatch, 38, who has been nominated for his depiction of World War II codebreaker Alan Turing in “The Imitation Game”, wed theatre director Hunter, 36, at a ceremony attended by close friends and family on the Isle of Wight, off the south coast of England, according the

Daily Telegraph. Other guests at St Peter & St Paul Church were reported to include actors Tom Hiddleston and Martin Freeman.

Photographers snapped the couple leaving the cer-emony in a classic Jaguar car, but many fans were left disappointed after waiting in

the rain for a glimpse of the newlyweds.

The couple announced their engagement in The Times newspaper’s births, deaths and marriages in November. Cumberbatch is currently working on a new series of BBC’s popular Sher-lock adaptation. (afp)

BEIJING — The son of actor Jackie Chan apologized to the public Saturday and asked for a second chance following his release from a six-month jail sentence for allowing people to use marijuana in his apartment. Jaycee Chan, 32, said at a news conference that he was rededicating himself to his family and entertainment business career. He said he had “no reason, no excuse” for the behavior that led to his arrest in August alongside Taiwanese actor Ko Kai and others.

“After this correction by the justice system, I have changed my outlook on life and my values,” Chan said. Chan and Ko tested positive for marijuana, and police seized more than 100 grams (3.5 ounces) of the drug from his Beijing apartment. He could have been sentenced to up to three years, but was shown leniency by the court for having come clean with his law breaking.

Chan’s news conference was broadcast live on Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, il-

lustrating the propaganda value Beijing hopes to gain from the high-profile case amid a sweeping anti-drugs crackdown.

Over the first half of last year, Beijing saw a 53-per-cent rise in drug investiga-tions in the city to more than 1,800 cases. More than 8,400 suspects have been detained during that time, an increase of 79 percent over the same period last year.

Chan, whose mother is former Taiwanese actress Lin Feng-jiao, was raised in Los Angeles and has appeared in about 20 films, most of them low-budget Hong Kong and mainland Chinese produc-tions. Jackie Chan has pub-licly apologized for his son’s drug use and pledged to work with him on his recovery. The incident was sensitive for him because of his status as a Chi-nese anti-drugs ambassador and deputy to the national legislature’s main consulta-tive body. Jaycee Chan said his father did not intervene on his behalf and that he received no special treatment in prison, where conditions were “quite harsh.”

Speaking slowly in a quiet voice, he said he’d first en-countered marijuana eight years earlier on a trip to the Netherlands, but only became a regular user about two years ago.

“I’m very ashamed that I haven’t been a good role model,” Chan said. “I want to start again, but I know that it’s the mass media that will decide.” (ap)

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Who says the image of bartender is poor? Even, when occupied, some-one will get added value. Putu Endra Mulana Jaya has proved it. Since he is seriously involved in the world of bartending, he realizes that the profes-sion is not only stylish but also able to enhance his knowledge and surely the livelihood that brings in money.

Endra as he is familiarly addressed was born in Denpasar on December 19, 1988 and has pursued bartending since college. He learned both flair bartend-ing and mixology. In his journey, he has been a bartender at the Grand Istana Rama Hotel and now developing his career as a flair instructor at the Bali Hotel School.

Due to his diligence, Endra often par-ticipates in the local, national and even international bartending competition. He got the first runner-up of Flair in Horror Indonesia Open Bartender Com-petition 2013, finalist in the Asia Bar Pro Flair Challenge Phuket Thailand 2013, the International Open Finalist of Good Bartender Championship 2013 in Kuala Lumpur and many more.

The achievement scenting the repu-tation of Bali and Indonesia is evidence if the image of the bartender is not to

get drunk. Although it is synonymous with alcohol and nightlife, it highly depends on the individual. When done wisely, it has many positive sides. “By becoming a bartender, I can channel my hobby, increase self-confidence, entertain people and even get a source of income,” he said while smiling.

Endra said that by studying the world of bartending, someone would understand and be able to control them-selves. In contrast, it would be very dangerous if a bartender having no knowledge on the drinks would see the bartender as the Star of the Bar. Bartend-ing profession was part of the art, so that the per-former

should become a role model and a pro-fessional figure before the public.

How to become a professional bar-tender, said Endra, was by diligently practicing, diligently studying, being discipline to make concentration and always developing skills. “Being a bar-tender should be able to control the atti-tude as well as be humble, friendly and obedient to the rules,” explained the

young man aspiring to become an inter-national bartender. (ocha)

Amlapura Artificial lotus pond located in

the center of Candidasa tourist at-traction now looks rundown with murky brown water. This condi-tion is caused by drainage water flow into the pond. Unavoidably this mascot of Candidasa is replete with garbage and filth

“The report has been regis-tered and is being dealt with by the Directorate of Special Crime Investigation of the Bali Police as it occurred within the Grand Forest Park” said Hery Wiyanto, Spokesperson for Bali Police on Friday (Feb 13).

According to standard pro-cedures, the Bali Police will be conducting an investigation, collect evidence and examine witnesses. The report, said Hery, would definitely be followed up on according to prevailing rules. “Since the case was only just reported, there are many pro-cesses that need to take place” he said.

According to information obtained by the Bali Police, the

Directorate of Special Crime Investigation team handling the case, first came down to the location of the alleged land an-nexation last Saturday in order to determine the exact location of the reported crime. “The de-fendant (RT—Ed) has lived at the location for about a year. Origi-nally he had built a hut, but later proceeded to built a permanent house” said the source.

Despite RT not holding any proof of ownership, he had nonetheless dared to build on this land. “Maybe, because he had not been reprimanded, by relevant agencies, he thought that there was no problem with building a house there” the police officer guessed. (kmb36)

Mangrove forest annexed to build a house

Tahura reports it to Bali Police Denpasar

Last Thursday (Feb 12), Ngurah rai Grand Forest Park (Tahura) authorities, reported a case of land annexation that took place in the mangrove forest of Kedonganan, Kuta, Badung. The 60 year-old culprit, with the initials r.T, was reported as having cleared 250 square feet of the mangrove area and built a house there.

Condition of Candidasa tourist attraction slums brought by water flow so that it harmed the view when entering the tourist attraction.

Headman of Bugbug, Karan-gasem, I Wayan Mas Astawa, revealed the drainage along the road of Candidasa both in the east and west of the pond caused the run-off coming from the road

to flow into the pond. Lately the rain flushing continuously caused the rub-bish and filth around Candidasa area to flow into the lotus pond.

As a result, the former beautifully grown lotus became damaged. Like-wise, the water of the pond turned turbid and brown. Mas Astawa re-vealed that it was difficult for him to clean up and manage the Candidasa tourist attraction because of limited funds owned by the village. To that end, his party asked for help from Karangasem government to arrange the condition of the pond previously becoming the supporting beauty of the tourist attraction.

The arrangement was needed so that the waste water around Candidasa would not get into the pond. He admitted the tourist visit to Candidasa continued to decline because there were no interesting objects for visitors in the famous tourist resort in the 1970s. The disappearance of white sandy beach owned by Candidasa also had a great impact as seen from

the decline in the number of tour-ist visits.

On the other hand, the other sup-porting objects like the Candidasa Temple becoming the forerunner of the name of the region could no longer increase the number of tourist visits. If such condition was neglected, it would have an impact on the economy of many Bugbug residents relying on their livelihood in tourism sector.

Related to such condition, his party would soon propose the ar-rangement of the lotus pond and drainage improvement to the Karan-gasem Culture and Tourism Agency. Arrangement of the lotus pond was extremely urgent to avoid the more severe damage due to overflowing waste water into the pond.

When asking for his confirmation related to public complaint, the Head of Karangasem Development Plan-ning Agency, I Ketut Merta Sedana, welcomed the proposal. Currently his party was awaiting a formal re-quest from the Bugbug headman

to be immediately followed up by making arrangement to Candidasa area. “Later we will find a solution whether we can involve the entre-preneurs around Candidasa to carry out the re-arrangement. We are still awaiting the official proposal from the village,” he said.

Additionally the Head of Karan-gasem of Culture and Tourism Agen-cy, I Wayan Purna, some time ago revealed there were different ways for the government to assist the management and maintenance of the pond. One of them was by providing grant and social assistance to custom-ary village of Bugbug for funding the pond maintenance.

However, this could only be done if villagers also participated to submit a budget to Karangasem government. “It’s okay to give the budget for management, but it must be proposed through customary vil-lage in the form of grant or social assistance. If we provide it directly, clearly it is unable,” explained Wayan Purna. (dwa)

NEW YORK — Dolly Parton promoting her Tennessee home-town? Of course. Taylor Swift promoting New York? That takes a little explaining, but OK, we get it. Brad Pitt promoting Manitoba? Definitely not.

Destinations are carefully culti-vating relationships with celebri-ties whose fans are seen as poten-tial visitors. But the connection between famous people and the places they promote is not always obvious. Celebs have always en-dorsed products, but it’s easier to appear in an ad for a credit card than to represent a place you don’t know much about. And that’s when things get interesting.

It’s obvious why Dolly Parton promotes Sevierville, Tennessee: The famous country singer grew up there. But New York tourism of-ficials took some guff when Taylor Swift became the city’s global wel-

come ambassador last fall. Critics said she was a bland, inauthentic representative for a city known for bagels, hip-hop and opinionated locals. City officials said it was a great way for New York to woo Swift’s millennial fans.

Another unlikely partnership was floated in a spoof claiming Manitoba tourism had spent $1 million to recruit Brad Pitt. The item, which ran last fall on the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.’s “This is That” program, suggested Manitoba might get “international recognition” if Pitt were to men-tion the province “in an interview with a Hollywood magazine or website.”

The joke led to inquiries from folks who didn’t realize it was satire. Tourism Manitoba spokes-woman Cathy Senecal confirmed that while Pitt “would be welcome any time,” the region has not re-

cruited him. She hastened to add that celebrities sometimes visit the region on their own, usually to watch polar bears.

In 2012, actress Tori Spelling was hired to connect Newport Beach, California, to her Twitter followers. Spelling didn’t have to visit Newport Beach or say any-thing special about it. But she did tweet photos and links as part of a tourism giveaway in a campaign organized by IZEA, a company that helps to connect social media influencers and destinations.

A recent visit to Hong Kong by actor Chris Noth of “Sex and the City” and “Good Wife” fame led tourism officials there to say in an email that Noth could help Hong Kong target “achievers in New York.”

Some campaigns do employ locals. Turismo de Portugal works with mega-soccer star Cristiano

Ronaldo to promote his native Por-tugal in China, where he’s known as C Luo. His picture appears on posters with messages in Chinese that Portugal is “world famous” and “full of spectacular places.”

Other campaigns have a specific theme. Santa Monica, California, gets more foreign tourists from Australia than any other coun-try, so the local Convention & Visitors Bureau recruited a pair of Australian TV personalities, Luke Hines and Scott Gooding, as ambassadors. Hines and Good-ing are celebrity chefs, cookbook authors, trainers and outdoor types, so their healthy lifestyle message meshes with Santa Monica’s im-age. The partnership “has been an absolute home run for us,” said Santa Monica CVB spokeswoman Jackie Alvarez.

New York officials say their partnership with Swift has also

been enormously successful, gen-erating free publicity for the city worth well over $25 million. “Even the pushback we got from the locals was a good thing because people felt passionate about New York,” said NYC & Company CEO Fred Dixon. “It was part of the dialogue, and kept the story alive and kept it going. It generated so much excitement and talk all over the world in interesting ways.”

Swift took no fee for her ser-vices, and her spokeswoman de-clined to comment on what’s in the arrangement for the famous singer. But it’s not hard to imagine how the wholesome Swift, a tween favorite, might benefit from brand-ing herself as a New Yorker. Helen Firth of Added Value, a strategic marketing consulting firm, says it may be a way of “ramping up her cool-factor, giving her saccharine appeal a little edge.” (ap)

In the annual ceremony that marks the official start of the fes-tivities, Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes handed over the keys of the city to King Momo, the mythical jester who reigns over the extravaganza. Musicians from Unidos da Tijuca, the samba group that won last year’s flamboyant parade compe-tition, played a medley of the sam-ba classics that make up the city’s tried and true Carnival soundtrack as a few dancers showed off their

fancy footwork.Paes acknowledged that times

are tough, but suggested Carnival would represent a welcome re-spite. “We have lots of problems, lots of challenges and lots of de-fects,” he said, “but we are very proud to live in a city like Rio de Janeiro.”

Paes said the festivities were sure to bring more than a welcome dose of fun: More than 450 street parties were expected to bring an

estimated 975,000 tourists out onto the streets. The visitors are expected to inject around $780 million into the local economy, he said.

Still, many residents complain that the “blocos,” popular street parties, snarl traffic, generate tons of litter and generally complicate daily life, particularly in areas such as Ipanema and Copacabana. Both beachside neighborhoods are epicenters of the “blocos,” which

are dedicated to everything from Michael Jackson to Super Mario Brothers and see revelers dress up to dance, sing, parade and down prodigious amounts of beer under the scorching sun.

With the corruption scandal at Petrobras making headlines daily for the past year, petroleum-themed Carnival costumes were expected to prove among this year’s most popular. A Rio-based mask company has been churn-ing out rubber masks of Maria das Gracas Foster, the Petrobras president who resigned earlier this month.

Carnival is huge not only in

Rio, but across Brazil, with fa-mous celebrations in the north-eastern cities of Salvador and Olinda attracting tourists by the tens of thousands. However, with the southeast in the throes of the worst drought in 80 years, some smaller cities in the regional have had to scrap their Carnival festivi-ties altogether.

Carnival wraps up on Wednes-day, following Rio’s all-night-long samba group parades at the city’s Sambadrome, where thousands of musicians, sequin and feather-clad samba dancers and costumed revelers compete for the title of the year’s top group. (ap)

A member of the Indonesia Tourism Promotion Board (BPPI), Nyoman Kandia, said that those wishing to invest in the tourism sector should be directed to rural improvements that would allow for the creation of tourism villages. Investors that want to invest in Bali do not need to build infrastructure such as hotels or villas. What are needed are efforts made to pre-serve culture and existing village facilities.

“If the government can direct investors, tourism development in Bali can be enjoyed by all of society. For instance, a well packed tourism village can attract visitors who want to stay in local people’s homes rath-er than hotels” said Mangku Kandia in Denpasar, Friday (Feb 13).

According to him, the concept of bringing investors to villages is a necessary government program. So far, it has been limited to mere discourse with no concrete realiza-tion. The government of Bali should think holistically and equalize tour-

ism development, so that people whose region is currently used as a tourist attraction could also enjoy the benefits of tourism.

“People visit Bali because of the arts and culture as well as its natural environment. If one of the compo-nents has shifted, the Island of the Gods will no longer be an attractive a tourist attraction. As long as the government is focused on building hotels or villas and continuously allows investors to build whatever they want, in the future travelers will no longer be interested in Bali” he explained.

Kandia who has been involved in tourism for many years, said that the growth of tourism in Bali should be contributing to the prosperity of communities in existing customary villages.

Mangku Kandia also encour-aged tourism investors to develop tourism village because foreign travelers were more interested in enjoying thee than they are in staying at the same kind of hotels

Gianyar Valentine’s Day celebration plan

in the event of the Car Free Night (CFN) in the area of Ciung Wanara urban park, Gianyar, which was originally held by Gianyar govern-ment on Saturday (Feb 14) was canceled. It was decided because one of the eight workers handling the stage work was electrocuted and died.

The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. At that time, the rain flushing Gianyar town just stopped. A total of eight stage workers of Cahaya Enterprise were preparing the stage by establishing a number of iron poles. The eight workers consisting of Pono, Budi, Holik, Krisdianto, Joni, Gito, Sarwadi and M. Nabroni, denoting the workers from Java, were setting up the poles of the stage. The height of the poles reached about 8 meters. Last year, the same workers also handled the stage installation in place and were aware of the power line in the middle of the stage they set up.

As observation at location, there

were three rows of high voltage power line stretching near where they were installing the stage. The lowest and upper cables of it were coated. Meanwhile, the three high voltage power lines of 20 KV on top were without coating. “As planned, the stage poles would be shifted eastward to avoid the power line beneath, but the stage pole even touched the top of the non-coated power line, said one of the work-ers, Pono.

At the time of incident, six people were bounced from the pole they pushed. Meanwhile, two other workers were electrocuted and a worker, Holik, 45, was killed, while Krisdianto injured due to electric shock. By their colleagues, the victims were immediately rushed to Sanjiwani Hospital, Gianyar.

Due to such incident, the mature plan to welcome the Valentine’s Day prepared by Creative Team of Gianyar government was immedi-ately canceled. The Creative Team Leader, I Wayan Kujus Pawitra, said in addition to the CFN Valentine,

Penglipuran Village, one of the tourism village in Bali.

The SLUGGISH development of tourism villages in Bali is due to the limited capital available in most villages. Evidently, many destinations that could become tourism villages are not developed because of operating costs, such as promotion and other infrastructural development needs. Investors are needed to kick start these projects.

that are found all over the world. Also, the development of tourism villages would have an a positive impact on the local community because tourism development in rural areas would be able to directly empower residents to improve their economy.

“In other words, with this model

of tourism, local residents can di-rectly enjoy the benefits of tourism and become active players in the industry by opening small inns and such” he said.

According to Mangku Kandia, with the development of such tourism villages, hundreds of inns could be owned and managed by

local communities. “Many travel-ers wishing to enjoy the village of Ubud for example, stay in home-stay’s because in addition to offer-ing affordable prices, their ameni-ties are similar to hotel facilities in the vicinity, yet they offer visitors a unique and local experience” he said. (kmb27)

the Car Free Day (CFD) on Sunday morning was also canceled. “It is a form of empathy for the victims and their families as well as avoid-ing other unfavorable incident,” he said.

In addition, local government also planned to organize pecaruan ritual at location on Wednesday (Feb 18). “To the entire society of Gianyar and all parties, please do

accept our apologies on the cancel-lation of this event and be informed accordingly,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Regent of Gian-yar, A.A. Gde Agung Bharata, im-mediately visited the victims under treatment at Sanjiwani Hospital. In addition to conveying condolences, the regent also provided assistance for the dead victim and the victims being treated. (kmb16)

Mangupura (Bali Post)—AirAsia was forced to cancel its flight to Singapore

from I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali, because the aircraft was alleged to have crashed a bird. The aircraft with flight number QZ 506 experienced can-cellation of departure and returned to the apron, Friday (Feb 13).

The flight cancellation was decided by the pilot of AirAsia after previously reported to the officer of the air traffic control. Due to the incident, pilot asked to go back to the apron for further inspection process.

General Manager of PT Angkasa Pura I (Persero) I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, Herry AY Sikado, when asked for his confirmation justified the incident. It happened at 1:24 p.m. when the aircraft was prepared to take off.

“Indeed it is true that a flight of AirAsia today should return to the apron due to bird strike. However, the pilot immediately decided to cancel the flight,” he explained.

According to him, the aircraft was pulled back to the apron at 1:36 p.m. and all passengers, amounting to 96 people, had been flown to Singapore by other aircraft at four o’clock that afternoon.

As had been known, the condition of the grassy run-way side was also used as one of the bird foraging areas, especially in the current rainy season. To that end, the Angkasa Pura I had an intense coordination with the Air-port Authority for Region IV and Airnav Indonesia in an effort to maintain safety at the Ngurah Rai Airport.

“We at the Angkasa Pura I also have established a team to supervise the activity of birds in the area of the air side and installed a bird repellent tool,” he concluded.

Aside from installing a bird repellent tool, the Angkasa Pura I also established a surveillance team that routinely conducted inspections and prevented the movement of birds and other wild life. “It is always done to ensure clean air side from any hazards that may interfere with flight safety,” he concluded. The Head of Denpasar Sanitation and Landscaping Agency (DKP), Ketut Wisada, said on Friday (Feb 13) that the rubbish problem was of special concern for government, espe-cially as it relates to the implementa-tion of the city tour. The DKP has therefore prepared special sanitation personnel to clean up the tourist at-tractions that will serve as destination on the city tour. The DKP officers will not, however handle all of the tour destinations, because as Wisada ar-gues, a number of them already have there own sanitation officers.

“We are gathering personnel to deal with sanitation around the Bali Museum, for example, so that we can assign janitors at Puputan Square to clean up the area in front of the mu-seum. However, for other locations such as Jro Kuta Palace, for instance, because it belongs to the realm of the

royal palace, we will leave it up to them to deal with. Likewise, Badung Market has their PD Pasar sanitation officers to deal with garbage there. We will however keep a close eye on conditions” he said.

Wisada went on to say he and his staff would go all out to support the Denpasar City Tour. He specified that attention would not only be given to specific locations along the tour route, but that they would also strive to render the entire city of Denpasar, free of litter. Many things need to be addressed to help make this happen.

Currently, waste production in the city of Denpasar is 2,700 cubic meters a day. DKP Denpasar cannot handle the huge amount of garbage alone partly because they lack human resources. DKP Denpasar employs 1,450 janitors consisting of sweepers, transport staff, gardeners, landfill as-

sistants and mechanics. A total of 55 units of garbage trucks are available to transport the rubbish. Such facili-ties and personnel are however inad-equate. At least 120 trucks, working in shifts, are required to transport all the rubbish. As for manpower, Wisada admitted that it was very difficult to find people who want to get involved in working with garbage.

As for waste management, DKP Denpasar is assisted by independent rubbish processing groups at the vil-lage level. Currently there are only 25 such groups, but they are frequently overwhelmed by the large amount of garbage that needs processing.

“On that account, we propose the use of heavy equipment as a solution, so that the garbage depots will no lon-ger need to employ as many humans. Waste containers could be increased so that the public can directly deposit their garbage there. The placement of these public trash cans is important, as is education about using them. Presently, there are 120 garbage cans around Denpasar. We plan to increase this by 20 to 30 cans per year, but will only be adding 10 this year” said Wisada. (kmb25)

Denpasar —Sanglah Hospital needs additional cardiac catheterization

(cath) lab for the need of health care, especially in the surgi-cal field. It was conveyed by Dr. Ketut Putu Yasa, a specialist of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at Sanglah Hospital, Saturday (Feb 14).

Currently Sanglah Hospital had two cath labs but only one unit was said to be usable, while another was out of order. Meanwhile, the cath lab was required by some medical depart-ments such as the department, interventional radiology, thoracic endovascular, neurology and child cardiology department. “So, there are six medical departments requiring this device,” he said. Thus, to meet the need, one unit only is not enough. “Maybe it will need two or three,” he added.

Similarly, many patients also needed it. By and large, few patients would come when the facilities were available con-sidering the cath lab could help detect disease.

He also delivered that the cath lab could be used by an average of 400 patients per year. “Generally, the cardiology department requires this device,” he concluded. In addition, the population of people with diabetes also increased, so that the need for cath lab by people with vascular disease also increased.

Endovascular surgery was a corrective action of blood ves-sels without open surgery. “It is without using a knife or a little use of it or better known as minimal invasive,” he explained.

Responding to the proposal of Dr. Ketut Putu Yasa, Direc-tress of the Sanglah Hospital, A.A. Sri Saraswati, stated that her side could fulfill no matter how many units required as long as they were supported by adequate human resources. (kmb24)

Garbage, a big challenge for proposed Denpasar city tourDenpasar —

The municipality of Denpasar, will launch a city tour package in the near future. A number of challenges will be faced in the implementation of the program. One challenge is the ongoing problem related to garbage. Denpasar in general and certainly the locations and passages to the loca-tions of the city tour, should be free of garbage so as not to tarnish the image of the City of Denpasar.

International attention will be focused in the coming days on the strategic railway hub of De-baltseve, where Ukrainian govern-ment forces have for weeks been fending off severe onslaughts from pro-Russian separatists.

As Associated Press journal-ist traveling toward Debaltseve from the north on Sunday morn-ing heard explosions from about 25 kilometers (15 miles) away. A Ukrainian officer, whose unit’s tanks were parked by the side of the road, said it was the sound of rebels firing. This could not be confirmed independently.

Donetsk, the main large city under separatist control, was quiet on Sunday morning with no shelling from government forces,

the Donetsk News Agency, a sepa-ratist mouthpiece, reported, citing the city administration.

The U.S. State Department said images from eastern Ukraine offer “credible pieces of evidence” that the Russian military has deployed larger amounts of artillery and multiple rocket launchers around Debaltseve to shell Ukrainian forces.

“We are confident that these are Russian military, not separat-ist systems,” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement Saturday.

Ukrainian President Petro Po-roshenko issued a cease-fire order in a live broadcast for all the coun-try’s armed forces to hold their fire from one minute after midnight

Kiev time (2201 GMT, 5:01 p.m. EST). Accusations of violations were quick to follow.

Ukrainian security services chief Valentyn Nalyvaichenko said one infringement was re-ported about 50 minutes after the deadline. Artillery salvoes were fired from an area that Nalyvaichenko said is under the control of a Cossack unit manned by Russian citizens. Meanwhile, rebels accused the Ukrainians of deploying artillery shortly after midnight.

Donetsk News Agency, a sepa-ratist mouthpiece, cited senior rebel defense official Eduard Basurin as saying the Ukrainian forces garrisoned in Debaltseve fired artillery and mortars at rebel positions.

“In the interests of preventing the death of the civilian popula-tion, precise fire is being deployed toward the enemy’s positions,” Basurin was cited as saying.(ap)

NEW DELHI — Sri Lanka’s new leader is underlining India’s importance as a regional ally by making it his first official foreign destination as president, following years of increasingly uneasy rela-tions with New Delhi and amid international pressure to speed up post-civil war reconciliation efforts at home.

President Maithripala Sirise-na’s four-day visit, which begins with his arrival Sunday evening, has been welcomed by Indian officials, who were planning a ceremony and banquet for him Monday and top-tier meetings befitting the countries’ “unique” historical and cultural ties, Indian foreign ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin said.

Relations between India and Sri Lanka had become tense in recent years, as China grew cozier with the island nation, long considered by India as being within its tradi-tional sphere of influence.

Last year, President Xi Jinping became the first Chinese leader to visit Sri Lanka in 28 years as he courted Colombo’s support for a maritime trade route. Sri Lanka also irked New Delhi by allowing two Chinese submarines to dock along its coastline, and by broker-ing deals for billions in Chinese loans and infrastructure projects.

Sirisena has said his govern-ment will review the loans and projects approved under his pow-erful predecessor and one-time ally, Mahinda Rajapaksa, whom he defeated in a stunning election upset last month. While cam-paigning for the election, Sirisena

had criticized the Chinese projects as debt traps, but he has since an-nounced plans to visit China after his India trip.

Meanwhile, Sirisena will be looking this week to boost bilater-al trade with India, now standing at around $1 billion. He is to visit a Buddhist temple complex in the eastern state of Bihar before trav-eling to the southern Indian city of Tirupati later Tuesday and return-ing to his country Wednesday.

He and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are also likely to focus talks on Sri Lanka’s efforts to establish reconciliation in the wake of its long civil war, which Sirisena has named a priority for his government. Sri Lanka’s ethnic Tamil minority complain that little has been done to restore trust and national unity since the 25-year civil war ended with the routing of ethnic Tamil rebels in 2009, despite pledges to devolve power to Tamil-populated provinces.

India, with its own sizeable Tamil population, has also voiced concerns about the slow pace of reconciliation efforts, and has urged Sri Lanka to heed international demands for an independent inves-tigation into alleged war crimes.

“This is an important issue. We will discuss issues relating to the reconciliation and reconstruction in Sri Lanka,” Akbarrudin, the foreign ministry spokesman, told reporters in New Delhi on Sat-urday. In Sri Lanka, government minister Pon Radhakrishnan told reporters that Modi was “very keen” to help find a permanent solution.(ap)

KIEV, Ukraine — A cease-fire was declared in eastern Ukraine at a minute after midnight Sunday, kindling slender hopes of a reprieve from a conflict that has claimed more than 5,300 lives. But within two hours of the cease-fire’s scheduled start, the warring sides were already trading accusations of fresh attacks.

Economic output across what was then the 18-country eurozone was 0.3 percent higher in the fourth quarter than the previous three-month period, the EU’s statistics agency said Friday. That equates to an annualized rate of around 1.2 percent, which is still only about half the growth rate in the U.S.

The fourth-quarter per-formance was nevertheless higher than the 0.2 percent in-creased anticipated by inves-tors and has buoyed European stock markets on Friday. The Stoxx 50 index of eurozone shares rose 0.7 percent to a seven-year high.

A confluence of factors appears to be helping the eurozone, which now num-bers 19 countries following Lithuania’s entry this year. The near 50 percent fall in oil prices since last summer should help consumer spend-

ing while the fall in the euro to near decade-lows against the dollar is a potential boon to exporters. The European Cen-tral Bank’s stimulus, which involves buying around 1 tril-lion euros ($1.14 trillion) of bonds, could also lift growth by keeping borrowing rates low.

“Survey data are already signaling an upturn in growth in January, and investors are flooding into the region in response to the improved eco-nomic outlook and renewed stimulus from the ECB — a torrent of investment flows which looks likely to continue in coming months barring any escalation of the Greek crisis,” said Chris Williamson, chief economist at financial infor-mation company Markit.

Germany was the standout performer, growing by a quar-terly rate of 0.7 percent. Its export-heavy economy should

do particularly well from the fall in the euro. A lower cur-rency makes exports cheaper in international markets, and the euro is currently weighed down by the ECB stimulus plans. France lagged, expanding by only 0.1 percent while Italy’s economy was stagnant.

Spain also did particularly well, growing by 0.7 per-cent, but Greece’s economy faltered — declining by 0.2 percent — following three straight quarters of growth.

The growth figures cap an encouraging week for the eurozone. As well as the in-creasingly positive economic backdrop, hopes have grown that a potentially damaging Greek exit from the euro can be avoided as the new govern-ment in Athens appears to be edging toward a compromise deal over its debts with its creditors in the eurozone.

M e a n w h i l e , a c e a s e -

fire agreement Thursday in Ukraine could ease — if it proves lasting — another major source of uncertainty for the region.

Still, risks remain. The progress made over Greece and Ukraine could yet un-ravel. At the same time, the region is suffering a bout of falling consumer prices. If sustained for a long time, de-flation can choke an economy as consumers delay spending in hopes for bargains down the line and businesses fail to innovate and invest amid faltering profits.

The ECB’s stimulus, an-nounced last month and set to take effect next, is designed to help get inflation back to the target of just below 2 percent. In the year to January, prices were 0.6 percent lower.

Hopes rest largely on the success of the stimulus pro-gram, but the situation is likely to remain precarious for the foreseeable future,” said Dennis de Jong, managing director at UFX.com. (ap)

Germany helps eurozone economy pick up speed in 4th quarter

Japan moving to end S.Korea currency swap pact

Japan was moving to end a 14-year-old, $10-billion currency swap accord with South Korea, as the neighbouring US allies fail to mend their soured bilateral ties, reports said Saturday. Tokyo was expected to announce the decision in the coming week with the current pact expiring on February 23, said major media, including the Nikkei, the Asahi Shimbun and Kyodo News.

“Deterioration of the Japan-South Korea re-lationship is seen to have affected the decision,” the Asahi said. Under the contract, originally agreed in 2001, each country can obtain dollars by giving its own currency to the other at times of financial emergencies.

The two sides routinely adjusted the size and details of the agreement, which expanded to as much as $70 billion in 2011, after a series of global crisis, including the collapse of invest-ment bank Lehman Brothers and the eurozone debt crisis.

The Nikkei newspaper added that the need for the accord has been reduced as South Korea’s foreign currency reserves have increased 18 times more than the level seen after the 1997 Asian currency crisis. In October last year, Japanese finance minister Taro Aso said the pact would not be renewed unless South Korea requested it.

The Japan-South Korea relations have long been tense due to various disputes linked to Japan’s 1910-45 rule over the Korean peninsula. The bilateral ties plunged again in 2012 after then-South Korean President Lee Myung-bak travelled to disputed islands in the Sea of Japan (East Sea). “A clash of the egos between Japan and South Korea resulted in the decision not to renew it,” a Japanese official told the Asahi Shimbun. The Nikkei added that the two countries could re-sign the deal again when necessary. (afp)

To revive the cultural heritage at Pe-jeng village, the Gianyar government in cooperation with the Soma Negara Grand Palace at Pejeng held an art show. It was organized at the palace by featuring clas-sical art in the form of psalmody, shadow puppet, human puppet and Kecak Dance entitled ‘The Killing of Kumbhakarna.’

Headman of Pejeng, Cokorda Rai Wid-iarsa Pemayun, delivered that utilization of the Soma Negara Grand Palace as a vehicle of staging was very important. It was meant to maintain and preserve the history of culture. In addition to royal palace, the Pejeng village environment also played a role in the success of the event. On that account, the arrangement began to be made from the environment surrounding the palace including the Pe-jeng village.

The performing art entitled ‘The Kill-ing of Kumbhakarna’ also received posi-tive feedback from the royal family. One of them was Cokorda Raka. His party was very glad to participate in preserving the culture. “Our palace is composed of three parts, namely the outermost, middle and innermost courtyard and it is open to the public except for the sacred area,” he explained.

Chairman of the Organizing Commit-tee, Yoke Darmawan, explained the per-formance was one of the arts that would be raised by Pejeng village. Concept of the story and ideas were compiled by Prof. Dr I Wayan Dibia along with I Made Sidia served as the Art Director and Arranger. The first performance took place success-fully on October 8. As planned, this event would be held every full moon as the icon of Pejeng village.

Ramayana

Kumbhakarna is a powerful and brave giant of Lanka. He has an elder brother named king Ravana. However, the broth-er Ravana committed evil deeds by ab-ducting Sita, the wife of Sri Rama. This incident caused Sri Rama and his monkey army to attack Lanka in the battlefield. It is the part of the Ramayana epic.

One by one of the Lanka troops were killed. King Ravana was angry and ex-pressed his anger to Kumbhakarna. Obvi-ously, in the midst of the precarious situ-ation of war Kumbakarna chose to sleep and laze. Ravana accused Kumbhakarna of a lazy, coward and stupid giant and did not care about the safety of Lanka.

The accusation of ??Ravana made Kumbhakarna angry and conversely pointed out that Ravana was the source of destruction to Lanka. Ravana then urged Kumbhakarna to get involved in the battlefield. Although he initially refused, but to save Lanka, he finally agreed to do so. Accompanied by thousands of giants, Kumbhakarna fought against the forces of Sri Rama who was also accompanied by magical friends named Hanuman and Sugriva.

Originally, a bitter struggled occurred between Kumbhakarna and Hanuman and Sugriva. To stop a devastating rampage of Kumbhakarna, Sri Rama and Lakshamana took out the arrow bestowed by Lord Shiva, Lord Brahma and Lord Indra. One by one the leg and the hand of Kumbhakarna came off of his body. Kumbhakarna was ultimately killed by Sri Rama, an avatar of Lord Vishnu. (ocha)

According to Grandpa Sundari, a fisherman from local village, the deity venerated at the Mas Sepuh Temple was very generous. Any people who wanted to please safety either in trading business, work inspiration and prospective leader-ship in the company or government would also be granted. “After the feast of the Moslem, many Java-nese pilgrims come to worship at this temple,” he said.

One of the conditions, added Grandpa Sundari, was sincerity. In essence, they came with good intentions and did not do harmful things to others. Employers com-ing to invoke safety in running their business were from a variety of faiths. There were Chinese busi-nessmen from various regions in Bali, including from outside Bali. “Sometimes they come at night on

holy days,” said the man who made a living on the coast every day.

It was justified by the Headman of Cemagi, Si Ketut Wirama. He said the officials who led the or-ganization or government agency often invoked inspirations so that they could accomplish their tasks properly. Ideas and programs often came to mind after worshipping at this temple. “Some officials often worshipped at this temple secretly. They just contacted the temple priest,” he said.

Nevertheless, the community wishing to perform prayers or just travel should never violate the rules such as placing dirty clothes or objects in the temple area, es-pecially on the fence or shrines. Women who got their period were not allowed to approach the temple area even though only a few meters

away.Grandpa Sundari told that once

upon a time there were some people practicing their martial arts in this coastal area. Feeling to have owned a great strength, they acted arbitrarily and then put various belongings carelessly. Grandpa Sundari then told them because the area was very holy and sacred. However, they were challenging. Granpa Sundari did not respond to them but taking incense stick and said prayers.

A few minutes later, one of the men got pain and rolled over on the black sand. Being unacceptable to his advice, two other friends also experienced similar condition and they were rolling over as well. “Af-terward, they were told to apolo-gize at the temple. Thankfully, they could regain their consciousness,”

said Grandpa Sundari.Based on the narrative of local

fishermen, the deity abiding at the Mas Sepuh Temple was Prince Mas Sepuh. His actual name was Raden Amangkuningrat, who was better known as the Kramat of Seseh Beach. He was the son of the first king of Mengwi (Hindu) and his Islamic mother came from Blambangan, East Java.

During his childhood, he had separated from his father and was raised by his mother in Blamban-gan. When growing adult, he asked his mother about his father and asked permission to search for him. Prince Mas Sepuh went to Bali accompanied by some royal retain-ers and equipped with heirloom kris dagger from the Kingdom of Mengwi.

After meeting with his father, a misunderstanding occurred as it was for the first time for them both to meet. Then, he went home to Blambangan to tell his mother about the incident. When arriving

on Seseh Beach, Prince Mas Sepuh was attacked by a group of uniden-tified armed men so the battle was avoided.

Seeing the battle claimed a few casualties from both sides, the kris dagger owned by Prince Mas Sep-uh was taken out and stretched up-ward and it immediately gleamed and a miracle occurred. The armed groups attacking him suddenly paralyzed and kneed silently.

Ultimately, it was known if the attackers still had a familial relationship to him seen from their clothing and the visionary abil-ity of Prince Mas Sepuh. Then, the kris dagger was put back into sheath and the attackers could move again and then paid homage to Prince Mas Sepuh.

Not long after the incident, Prince Mas Sepuh died and was buried on the spot. Until now, his grave is well maintained and always paid homage by Muslims from various parts of the archi-pelago. (kmb)

Chan, 31, and Sukumaran, 33, are facing execution by firing squad as early as this week as ring leaders of the so-called Bali Nine group trafficking heroin from Indonesia’s island of Bali into Australia. While all hope appears to be lost, Abbott put pressure on Jakarta for the sec-ond day in a row.

“Millions of Australians are feeling sickened by what might be about to happen in Indonesia,” he told Channel Ten. “If these execu-tions go ahead, and I hope they don’t, we will certainly be find-ing ways to make out displeasure felt.”

Brazil and The Netherlands re-called their ambassadors in protest at executions of their citizens in January. Abbott has not said what Canberra’s response would be. For-

eign Minister Julie Bishop last week warned Jakarta that Australians could boycott Indonesia, including the island of Bali, a popular holiday spot for its travellers.

Abbott also stepped up criticism of Indonesia for trying to save its own citizens on death row in other countries for drug trafficking while rejecting pleas from Australia. “What we are asking of Indonesia is what Indonesia asks of other countries when its citizens are on death row,” he said.

“If it’s right for Indonesia to ask and expect some kind of clemency, it’s surely right for us to ask and expect some kind of clemency.” There are 360 Indonesians on death row around the world, including in Malaysia, Singapore, China and Saudi Arabia, Australian media

reported. Of that, 230 are on drug charges.

As time runs out for Chan and Sukumaran, attorneys-general from across each of Australia’s states and territory have sent a joint letter to Indonesia’s government asking they be spared, broadcaster ABC reported. Their families are also due to be presented with a petition with more than 150,000 signatures urging clemency.

Chan and Sukumaran, who have been on death row since 2006, lost their appeals to President Joko Widodo, who has vowed a tough ap-proach to ending what he has called Indonesia’s “drug emergency”. Widodo has been a vocal supporter of capital punishment and recently executed six convicted drug smug-glers. (afp)

NUNUKAN, N. Kalimantan- The Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) will increase the number of its per-sonnel to guard Indonesia-Malasyia borderlines, a military commander has said.

“We are planning to increase the number of soldiers who will be as-signed to guard and maintain security along the border areas,” Brig Gen Teguh Arief Indratmo, the chief of 091/ASN Military Resort of VI Mu-lawarman Regional Military Com-mand, said over the weekend.

He said that now there were 33 security guard posts along the border

areas. The number will be increased to 50. The new posts will be built in strategic coordinate points.

The security posts will be built in border areas which are very difficult to be reached by soldiers now. “Of course this plan needs strategic con-siderations, assessment and surveys,” he added.

Indratmoko said his side was still considering the number of soldiers to man the new 17 posts.

“The number of personnel for each of the post will differ from one to another, depending on the conditions in the area,” he said. (ant)

MEDAN - The Immigration Office of Medan, North Suma-tra, is detaining 170 Somalians for entering Indonesia without proper immigration documents such as passports.

“Most of the detainees in the Immigration Offices detention center are Somalian citizens,” Head of Medans Immigration Detention House Purbanus Purba said here over the weekend.

The Somali people entered Indonesia using wooden boats from Malaysia.

“They a r r ived in Medan through Tanjung Balai Port. They planned to continue their trip to Jakarta and Australia where they will ask for political asylum,” he said.

He said that besides Somalians, there are also illegal immigrants from Sri Lanka (85), Myanmar (23) and other foreigners.

“There are 395 foreigners be-ing detained at the immigration detention center. They all get good protection and are healthy,” Purba said. (ant)

SURABAYA - Din Syamsuddin, the general chairman of the influential Islamic organization Muhammadiyah called for public support for any decision of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on new police chief.

“Everyone should accept whoever is to be installed new police chief by the president even if it is Comr.Gen Budi Gunawan,” Din Syamsuddin said on Saturday.

Din Syamsuddin recalled what Jokowi once told him that the selec-tion of Budi Gunawan had met all the procedures and that he had asked for recommendations from the National Police Commission, police and the National Intelligence Agency (BIN)before he named Budi Gunawan candidate.

He said Jokowi believed there was no problem with Budi Gunawan , but a day before the fit and proper test, the police chief candidate was declared a suspect by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

Jokowi also admitted facing a dilemma after the approval given by the Parliament, Din Syamsuddin, who is also chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) said.

“Currently I represent MUI to advise the president to hear his con-science and use spiritual consideration by praying to God the Almighty.” he said.

He said he believed President Jokowi would soon make his decision and ask all Indonesians to see it as the best decision. (ant)

Australia PM warns Indonesia of tough response to executions

SYDNEY - Millions of Australians are “sickened” by the imminent execution of two of its citizens by Indonesia, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said Sunday, warning of a tough diplomatic response. No date has been set for the killing of Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, but Indonesia has said governments with citizens on death row have been invited to talks at the foreign ministry on Monday.

The dramatic events that un-folded in Copenhagen stirred fears that another terror spree was underway in a European capital a month after 17 people were killed in Paris attacks.

Skov said the gunman was killed in a firefight with police in the Noerrebro district of Copenhagen. No police were wounded in that shooting.

The first shooting happened be-fore 4 p.m. Saturday when police said a gunman used an automatic weapon to shoot through the win-dows of the Krudttoenden cultural center during a panel discussion on freedom of expression featuring a Swedish artist who had caricatured the Prophet Muhammad. The art-ist, Lars Vilks, was whisked away unharmed by his bodyguards but a 55-year-old man attending the event was killed, while three police officers were wounded, authorities said.

Two belonged to the Danish security service PET, which said the circumstances surrounding the shooting “indicate that we are talking about a terror attack.” After midnight Sunday, a Jewish man was killed and two police officers were wounded in the second shoot-ing outside the synagogue.

Dan Rosenberg Asmussen, the head of Denmark’s Jewish commu-nity, told Danish public broadcaster DR that the victim was guarding the entrance of a building adjacent to the synagogue.

Skov said the shooter was con-fronted by police as he returned to an address that they were keeping under surveillance. Investigators described him as 25 to 30 years old with an athletic build and carrying a black automatic weapon. They re-leased a blurred photograph of the suspect wearing dark clothes and a scarf covering part of his face.

Vilks, a 68-year-old artist who has faced numerous death threats for depicting Muhammad as a dog in 2007, told The Associated Press he believed he was the intended target of the first shooting, which happened at a panel discussion titled “Art, blasphemy and freedom of expression.”

LUCKNOW, India — A build-ing that was under construction in a north Indian town collapsed overnight, killing 13 members of a family of weavers who were sleeping on the ground floor, po-lice said Sunday. Three people escaped unhurt when the partially built first floor crashed down in the town of Mughalsarai, about 300 kilometers (186 miles) southeast of Uttar Pradesh’s state capital of Lucknow.

“People were buried alive” when the building came down, police Superintendent Chandauli Muniraj

said. Two people were taken to a hospital, but one died, raising the death toll to 13.

The victims included the build-ing’s owner, Mohammad Kamar-rudin, and members of his family, including two children under 8 years old, Muniraj said. Police were inves-tigating what caused the collapse, and had no details about construc-tion permits or practices.

Building collapses are common in India, where high housing demand and lax regulations have encouraged some builders to cut corners or use substandard materials. (ap)

ROME - Michele Ferrero, the world’s richest candy maker whose Nutella chocolate and hazlenut spread helped raise generations of Europeans and defined Italian sweets, died on Valentine’s Day, the company said. He was 89. Ferrero, who had been ill for several months, died Saturday in Montecarlo where he lived, sur-rounded by his family, the company said in a statement.

Ferrero was the patriarch of the eponymous family empire best known for its Nutella and Ferrero Rocher chocolates. The company’s products also included Tic Tacs and the Kinder line of products — including the eggs beloved by children for the treat inside.

Ferrero’s father, Pietro, started making Nutella when cocoa was still rationed during World War II, Forbes noted in ranking Ferrero and his family 30th on the list of the world’s richest billionaires in 2014, worth $23.4 billion.

The company was one of Italy’s most successful, a prime example of the “Made in Italy” brand of food and luxury goods that have defined the private sector in post-war Italy.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella praised Ferrero as one of the leaders of Italian industry, “always ahead of his time thanks to innovative products and his tenacious work and reserved character.”

Pietro Ferrero opened his first chocolate laboratory in Alba, in Italy’s northwest Piemonte region, in 1942. The business passed to Michele upon Pietro’s death in 1949.

Michele Ferrero developed Kinder chocolates in 1968, Tic Tacs a year later and Ferrero Rocher in 1982, according to a biography provided by the company. Eventually, Ferrero intruced the Ferrero Rocher chocolates in Europe and by 1985 began selling them in the United States, according to the company’s website.

By 1997, Michele Ferrero handed over the running of the company to his two sons, Pietro and Giovanni. Pietro Ferrero died in 2011 of a cardiac ar-rest, leaving Giovanni the sole CEO. Survivors include Ferrero’s wife, Maria Franca, and Giovanni. A wake was scheduled in the Alba factory and the funeral was scheduled for the cathedral in Alba, the company said. (ap)

The scene outside the Copenhagen cafe, with bullet marked window, where a gunman opened fire Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015, in what is seen as a likely terror attack against a free speech event organized by an artist who had caricatured the Prophet Muhammad.

Police kill man believed behind 2 shootings in Copenhagen

COPENHAGEN — Danish police shot and killed a man early Sunday who likely carried out shooting attacks at a free speech event and a synagogue in Copenhagen that left two people dead. Investigator Joergen Skov told reporters that “nothing at this point suggests there were other perpetrators” in the shootings that also left five police officers wounded.

“What other motive could there be? It’s possible it was inspired by Charlie Hebdo,” he said, referring to the Jan. 7 attack by Islamic ex-tremists on the French newspaper that had angered Muslims by lam-pooning Muhammad. Police said it was possible the gunman had planned the “same scenario” as in the Charlie Hebdo massacre.

Leaders across Europe con-demned the violence and expressed support for Denmark. Sweden’s security service said it was sharing information with its Danish counter-part, while U.S. National Security Council spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan said U.S. officials were ready to help with the investigation and have been in touch with their Danish counterparts.

Vilks has faced several attempted

attacks and death threats after he depicted the Prophet Muhammad as a dog in 2007. A Pennsylvania woman last year got a 10-year prison term for a plot to kill Vilks. In 2010, two brothers tried to burn down his house in southern Sweden and were imprisoned for attempted arson.

The depiction of the prophet is deemed insulting to many followers of Islam. According to mainstream Islamic tradition, any physical depiction of the Prophet Muham-mad — even a respectful one — is considered blasphemous.

While many Muslims have ex-pressed disgust at the deadly assault on the Charlie Hebdo employees, many were also deeply offended by its cartoons lampooning Muham-mad. (ap)

However, the process of moving the prisoners to Nusa Kambangan should run safely and smoothly” he said.

Because the execution will be carried out in Nusa Kambangan, the firing squad of the Mobile Brigade will not be used. Authorities from the Prosecutor’s Office have appointed a firing squad in Nusa Kambangan to carry out the execution for both prisoners suspected of being drug kingpins. “From the beginning, we have prepared the firing squad and the escort team. Everything has been prepared perfectly including the strat-

egy for moving the prisoners. Security from the cells in Kerobokan to Ngurah Rai Airport, Tuban, has been well prepared” said Hery.

As reported, both members of the Bali Nine, Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan are still awaiting the execution schedule from the Attorney General. Since they are detained at Ker-obokan Prison, the Bali Police have set up a firing squad if the execution is to be carried out in Bali. Both prisoners were arrested at Ngurah Rai Airport, Tuban, for smuggling 8.3 kilograms of heroin, in April 2005. (kmb36)

“I had very high expectations, a dream,” the 6-foot-3 (1.90m) Curry said after Saturday’s prac-tice with the East All-Stars. “You never know how it’s going to unfold, and take place. That’s the fun part about the journey. “And I’m still not anywhere near what I want to achieve. That’s what keeps me hungry and driven to keep going.”

Curry has averaged 23 .6 points, 7.9 assists, 4.7 rebounds and a league-leading 2.2 steals for the high-flying Warriors and received 42,000 more votes than LeBron James as top All-Star vote-getter.

Golden State coach Steve Kerr, who is directing the All-Star West team, said Curry deserves front-line consideration as the league’s

most valuable player.“Steph is definitely one of the

leading candidates,” said Kerr. “He’s great at both ends. His defense is underrated, he’s been really good defensively. “He’s obviously an amazing shooter, but it’s not just the shots. The penetration, the ball handling, the constant threat that he poses opens other things up for his teammates. He’s a phenomenal player.”

Kerr said Curry, the son of former Charlotte Hornets player Dell Curry, had answered doubt-ers who questioned whether he could excel in the NBA given his willowy physique. “He’s much stronger, faster and quicker than people realize,” said Kerr. “The opponents realize it, they feel it.”

Curry will be starting in the backcourt with his Warriors running mate Klay Thompson, stepping in for the injured Kobe Bryant. He said he was fully enjoying all the success. “We’re doing things that haven’t been done in our franchise for 25 years,” said Curry.

“It’s crazy to think about, as the longest tenured Warrior, and I’ve seen the transformation from my rookie year to now. It’s pretty special.”(rtr)

Top seed Kei Nishikori is on track for a three-peat at the Memphis Open after a narrow semi-final victory on Saturday. The Japanese barely averted an upset against Sam Querrey. He lost the first set before winning consecu-tive tiebreakers for a 5-7 7-6(5) 7-6(5) victory over the American, who served 27 aces.

World number five Nishikori will seek his eighth ATP title when he meets second seed Kevin Anderson in the fi-nal on Sunday. The South African also dropped the first set before recovering to beat American Donald Young 4-6 6-3 6-4. Anderson, 28, staved off four break points in the second and third sets to triumph in just under two hours.

Nishikori had trouble against Quer-rey’s serve and in the end was mightily relieved to edge the world number 41. Last year’s U.S. Open finalist trailed 2-4 in the final set tiebreaker, before winning five of the next six points to scrape through.

“I thought a couple times that I might lose,” Nishikori told reporters. “I knew it was going to be tough because I didn’t break any of his serves... It was really tough to make any returns.”

Nishikori, 25, has lost the first set in all three of his matches this week. “I’m a little bit tired from playing three tough matches, but it’s just one more match,” he said.(rtr)

Thierry Neuville snatched the lead of Rally Sweden for Hyun-dai at the end of Saturday’s leg, setting up a thrilling final-morn-ing battle with Volkswagen’s Andreas Mikkelsen and Sebas-tien Ogier. It had looked like it would be the recovering Ogier who deposed Mikkelsen from the lead on Saturday morning, as two errors from the Norwe-gian allowed the reigning World Rally champion to reduce a half-minute gap to just 1.7 seconds heading to service.

But Ogier struggled in the af-ternoon, frustrated by the stage conditions he was encountering as first man on the road after the Historic field had created very different lines in the melt-ing snow. While Mikkelsen’s advantage over Ogier quickly grew again, it was Neuville who was setting the outright pace.

Winning the opening Fre-driksberg stage immediately took him up to second past Ogier, and then he saved two fresh tyres for the concluding Vargasen stage - helping him to another stage win and a 1.5s

overall lead ahead of Mikkelsen. Ogier remains firmly in conten-tion in a top three covered by just 9.6s with three nine-mile stages to decide the rally on Sunday morning.

Mads Ostberg and Ott Tanak continue to hold fourth and fifth places, while Hayden Paddon edged away from the pack be-hind in sixth. Elfyn Evans and Kris Meeke made the most of running further down the order to close on Prokop, with Meeke claiming his first stage win on snow on Rammen. The two Brit-ons are just 0.4s apart in eighth and ninth, 19s behind Prokop.

Their pace means Yuriy Pro-tasov is now a lonely 10th, under no pressure from behind after new Hyundai man Kevin Ab-bring lost time with a trip off the road, though he stayed 11th.

Robert Kubica took his first stage win in Sweden on the short Hagfors Sprint. That took him past Henning Solberg into 15th overall, but a mistake on the next stage swapped their places again, as Jari-Matti Latvala closed right in behind them.(rtr)

NEW YORK - It has been a long climb for Stephen Curry from a frustrating rookie season with the Golden State Warriors to top-vote getter for the NBA All-Star Game on Sunday. The sweet-shooting guard from Davidson College suffered through a 26-56 season with the Warriors after being the seventh pick of the 2009 NBA Draft, but comes to Madison Square Garden as the floor leader of the NBA’s top team at 42-9.

“A day I won’t forget for my whole life,” Hamburg coach Josef Zinnbauer said. It was Bayern’s most crushing Bundesliga victory since a 9-0 win against Kickers Offenbach in March 1984.

“We played well. Our build-up was quicker than in the last couple of games. I’m happy that we’re back to our way of playing. Now we’re focusing on the Champions League,” said Bayern coach Pep Guardiola, referring to Tuesday’s away game against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Second-placed Wolfsburg kept pace, eight points behind Bayern, with Dost’s winning fourth goal. Leverkusen had rallied from a three-goal deficit at halftime to tie the game at 4-4 thanks to Son Heung-min’s hat trick and 72nd-minute equalizer from Karim Bellarabi. Leverkusen finished with 10 men after Emir Spahic earned a second yellow card in the 82nd.

“Unfortunately we weren’t able to claim the point, not for the point’s sake but for the morale it would have given us,” Leverkusen coach Roger Schmidt said. Schalke, which hosts Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednes-day, lost 1-0 at Eintracht Frankfurt in the late game. American defender Timmy Chandler crossed for halftime substitute Lucas Piazon to head in the winner in the 65th.

“We created a lot of good opportuni-ties. The only thing missing was the goal. We just lacked that bit of luck,” Schalke captain Benedikt Hoewedes said.

Also, Granit Xhaka scored an injury-

time winner for Borussia Moenchengla-dbach to beat Cologne 1-0 in the Rhine derby, bottom side Stuttgart lost 2-1 to a late goal at Hoffenheim, and Werder Bremen defeated Augsburg 3-2 to con-solidate eighth place with its fifth con-secutive win. Bremen was bottom when the run started in December.

Mueller got Bayern off the mark with a penalty in the 21st and Goetze pounced to make it 2-0 off a rebound two minutes later after Jaroslav Drobny saved Muel-ler’s initial shot. Robben maintained his rich vein of form with a wonderful curled strike in off the left post after eluding three Hamburg defenders in the 36th. It was his 13th league goal of the season.

The Dutch winger claimed his next two minutes into the second half, shoot-ing a rare goal with his right foot when he beat Drobny at his near post. “It was a great surprise for all of us,” Bastian Schweinsteiger joked.

Schweinsteiger set up Mueller to make it 5-0 with a curler inside the right post in the 55th, one minute before Mu-eller set up Robert Lewandowski’s first goal of 2015. Ribery scored on a rebound in the 69th and Goetze completed Ham-burg’s humiliation in the 88th.

Schweinsteiger was back in his fa-vored role in defensive midfield after Xabi Alonso pulled out with a thigh injury. “I play that position with the na-tional team. I like playing there. It was wonderful,” Schweinsteiger said.

Bayern’s Holger Badstuber started the game to make his comeback from

a thigh injury sustained on Sept. 13. The Germany defender had been out for 20 months before that with a knee injury. In Leverkusen, Dost opened the scoring with a diving header in the sixth minute and Naldo made it 2-0 with a free kick in the 17th. Dost claimed his second by getting the outside of his boot to Kevin de Bruyne’s cross in the 29th.

Schmidt responded by making all three substitutions at the break. Son pulled one back in the 57th, despite Wolfsburg protests that he kicked the ball out of Diego Benaglio’s hands, and then scored again five minutes later. One minute later, Dost completed his hat trick by connecting with the end of Ricardo Rodriguez’s cross, only for Son to answer by completing his own hat trick four minutes after that. Bellarabi leveled the score in the 72nd, but Leverkusen was holding on after Spahic’s sending off and Dost sealed the win in the 93rd.

“It was a crazy game,” Dost said. “The first half was brilliant but we need to forget the second. We didn’t play football anymore. But still we scored five goals in an away game. I’m happy about that. We’re going for the Champions League.” (ap)

MADRID - Real Madrid returned to winning ways after last weekend’s drubbing at Atletico but failed to con-vince and were whistled by their own fans during a drab 2-0 victory at home to Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday. La Liga leaders Real were looking for an inspiring performance before Wednesday’s Champions League trip to Schalke 04 and were fortunate not to drop points with another insipid display following the humiliating 4-0 defeat at the Calderon.

Cristiano Ronaldo, criticised this week for throwing a 30th birthday party hours after the Atletico game, and Gareth Bale each struck efforts against the crossbar at the Bernabeu before Isco curled a shot into the cor-ner of the net to fire the hosts ahead in the 23rd minute.

However, Deportivo, who are 13th in the table after coming back up from the second division at the end of last season, refused to capitulate and should have levelled four minutes into the second half.

Midfielder Celso Borges thumped a shot against the post when well placed in the penalty area and Oriol Riera forced a fine save from Real goalkeeper Iker Casillas with a glanc-ing header moments later.

Some disgruntled Real fans, who whistled when the names of

coach Carlo Ancelotti and captain Casillas were read out before kickoff, were growing increasingly restless before Karim Benzema dinked a shot

over onrushing Deportivo keeper Fabri and into the net 17 minutes from time.

The victory, in which Real’s new signing Lucas Silva made his debut 20 minutes from time, put the world and European champions four points clear of second-placed Barcelona ahead of their game at home to struggling Levante on Sunday.

Atletico are three points further back in third before Sunday’s trip to Celta Vigo. “It has been a tough week and it was very important to get the victory today,” Real centre back Nacho, who with Raphael Varane is standing in for the injured Sergio Ramos and Pepe, told Spanish televi-sion.

“We played poorly at the Calderon and it was necessary to analyse what went wrong,” he added. “The team is very united and today we showed that.”

DOUBLE REDSevilla climbed above Valencia

into fourth spot, five points adrift of Atletico, thanks to a 3-0 win at home to Cordoba earlier on Saturday. Both sides had a man dismissed in the second half, with Cordoba midfielder Patrick Ekeng seeing red in the 54th minute and Sevilla midfielder Grze-gorz Krychowiak sent off 19 minutes later.

Sevilla had lost three of their last four La Liga games before Saturday, including a 3-1 reverse at Valencia, who will reclaim fourth if they avoid defeat at home to Getafe on Sunday.

Coach Unai Emery said he was relieved to see a solid performance before the Europa League holders host Borussia Moenchengladbach in the last 32 of Europe’s second-tier club competition on Thursday. Today we needed to recover a sense of resolve and control and the team delivered on that,” Emery told a news conference.

Athletic Bilbao missed a chance to climb up the table when they were held to a 0-0 draw at Granada, who climbed off the bottom above Cordoba.

Bilbao, who are 12th and play at Torino in the Europa League on Thursday, failed to find a goal even after Granada had Emanuel Insua sent off in the 68th minute.

In the late kickoff on the south coast, Espanyol beat Malaga 2-0 de-spite having to play with 10 men for the final 10 minutes at the Rosaleda. Alvaro Gonzalez headed Espanyol in front three minutes before halftime and Malaga should have levelled in the 82nd minute when substitute Diego Colotto, who had only been on the pitch for around three minutes, was sent off for a handball in the penalty area.

With Espanyol keeper Kiko Casilla out of position, Colotto appeared to tip a fierce Javi Guerra strike onto the crossbar and was shown a straight red card but Nordin Amrabat’s weak spot kick was well saved by Casilla.

Espanyol captain Sergio Gar-cia made it 2-0 in added time. The result left Malaga in seventh, with Espanyol six points behind them in eighth. (rtr)

MILAN — Napoli missed the chance to close the gap to second-place Roma as it lost 3-1 at Palermo in Serie A on Saturday, ending a run of six successive victories. Rafa Benitez’s team was hoping to cut Roma’s advantage to one point, pro-visionally at least. Instead, it will be looking nervously over its shoulder at Fiorentina, which cruised to a 3-1 win at Sassuolo to move to within four points of the final Champions League qualifying spot.

Achraf Lazaar opened the scor-ing after another howler from Na-poli goalkeeper Rafael, and Franco Vazquez and Luca Rigoni extended Palermo’s advantage before Manolo Gabbiadini scored a consolation eight minutes from time. “A goal-keeper’s mistake is more obvious than that of other players,” Benitez said. “It’s down to everyone that we won six in a row, so it’s not down to just one person when we lose one.

“You can cope with a loss after six successive wins, now we have to get back to work to get back on our path.” Palermo bounced back from a 3-0 defeat at Inter Milan, and moved into seventh ahead of the rest of the weekend fixtures. The win will also serve as a timely boost to Fiorentina ahead of Thursday’s Europa League round-of-32 tie

against Tottenham.“We had a perfect match and

we won,” Vazquez said. “It was very important.” Khouma Babacar and new signing Mohamed Salah inspired Fiorentina to victory, with the former netting twice after set-ting up Salah’s opener. Domenico Berardi, who earlier hit the post, scored for Sassuolo.

Napoli squandered a two-goal lead to draw 3-3 in a thrilling match against Palermo earlier in the season, and was looking to avoid further disappointment in Sicily.

However, it gifted Palermo the opener in the 14th minute when a terrible mistake by goalkeeper Rafael allowed Lazaar’s strike to bounce past him from nearly 40 meters. It was the defender’s first senior goal.

Palermo doubled its lead in the 36th following a counterattack which Paulo Dybala laid off for the on-rushing Vazquez to curl in from the edge of the area.

It sealed the result in the 65th when Vazquez nodded Dybala’s cross back over for Rigoni to tap in. Gabbiadini, who had his back to goal, flicked in Jonathan de Guzman’s free kick late on. It was Sassuolo’s second home defeat of the season. (ap)

AMSTERDAM - Heracles Almelo boosted their Dutch cham-pionship survival hopes after they snapped a run of seven league matches without victory with a surprise 2-0 win over Feyenoord on Saturday. Bryan Linssen scored on the stroke of halftime and Thomas Bruns added a second six

minutes from time to see Heracles move level on 20 points with 15th place Go Ahead Eagles, while Feyenoord slipped further behind in the title race.

“We were never in the game and that’s what happens when you don’t make any chances,” Feyenoord coach Fred Rutten told

NOS Radio. “We didn’t deserve to get anything out of it,” he told . Feyenoord remain third on 41 points, 20 behind leaders PSV Eindhoven, who beat AZ Alkmaar 4-2 on Friday.

Second placed Ajax Amster-dam can go eight points clear of Feyenoord if they win at home to

Twente Enschede on Sunday. For-mer Dutch international Demy de Zeeuw returned to the professional game after a seven-month hiatus and scored twice on debut for sec-ond from bottom NAC Breda but they still went down 2-3 to ADO Den Haag.

De Zeeuw, who played in the

2010 World Cup for the Netherlands, joined Breda last week after being without a club since his loan deal with Anderlecht ended last year.

Michiel Kramer, with his sec-ond of the night, scored the late winner for ADO who twice came back after going a goal down. (rtr)

(rtr)

(kmb36)

BRUSSELS — Strong growth in Germany helped the eurozone economy expand faster than expected in the final three months of 2014, the latest in a string of indicators showing the region is picking up steam amid lower oil prices and a weaker euro.

(kmb)

(kmb16)

(dwa)

“We have only been asked to help with the security and es-corting. However the exact date of the move is not known. We have prepared everything including the deployment of additional personnel and the route to be used” said Spokesperson for the Bali Police, Hery Wiyanto.

Wiyanto confirmed that both of the Australian inmates would be moved to Nusa Kambangan where they would be executed.

(ap)

He could have been sentenced to up to three years, but was shown leniency by the court for having come clean with his law breaking.

lustrating the propaganda value Beijing hopes to gain from the high-profile case amid a sweeping anti-drugs crackdown.
