Established in the late 1920s by Dr. Albert Ketcham and his peers, the American Board of Orthodontics helps raise the standard of care by supporting the development of orthodontic professionals. While certification by the Board does not confer legal recognition, it does mean certified practitioners received rigorous scrutiny from the wider community of orthodontists. When a practitioner passes Board examinations, he or she demonstrates to the public a willingness to continually improve his or her skills.

In addition to granting certifications, the American Board of Orthodontics promotes the growth of qualified education programs at the graduate and postgraduate levels. As a body attuned to international development, the organization seeks to advance certification opportunities to countries all over the world.

Prospective members can learn more about the history of the Board, registration criteria, and exam dates at www.americanboardortho.com.
