This progress report is prepared and submitted in accordance
with the reporting requirements summarized in the Administrative
Order between National Presto Industries, Inc. (NPI) , the United
states Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) , and the Wisconsin
Department of Natural Resources (DNR) , effective July 8, 1986.
Monitoring wells MW-52A,B; 53A,B; and 54A,B,C were installed

and construction reports are also attached to this progress report.
after installation. A small diameter Grundfos sampling pump with
a variable rate controller was used to develop and sample these
wells. The samples were analyzed in the field using a portable GC
and by Hazleton Laboratories in Madison, Wisconsin, on a quick
turn-around basis. Well sampling forms and field/lab results are
also attached.
Test excavations were performed in the area east of the forge
compound disposal trenches at the Melby Road disposal area. The
locations are shown on the attached drawing. The attached color
copies of the excavations are representative of the materials found
in the area. These materials primarily consisted of surficial
•dm- associotes consulting engineers, p.c.
amounts of forge compound and construction debris. The presence of
steel reinforcing bars in the construction debris probably accounts
for the magnetometer anomalies in the area. The results of the
test excavations are currently being analyzed for submittal to
USEPA and WDNR as a Technical Memorandum.
A procedure to collect representative samples of forge
compound from Lagoon 1 was developed and presented to USEPA and
WDNR for approval. These representative forge compound samples
will be used in the treatability studies required to evaluate
remedial alternatives for Lagoon 1 in the FS. Engineers and
vendors experienced in applications of the technologies being
considered were contacted to develop the scope and costs of the
treatability studies required.
Activities scheduled for November 1991 consist of the
continuation of monitoring well installation and the collection of
forge compound samples from Lagoon 1 for bench scale tests.
Bottled Water Distribution Plan
For the month of October 1991, 4,548 gallons of bottled water
were delivered to 123 residences and 31 businesses. There were no
changes in the number of residences or businesses to whom water was
delivered.
