What does your pre-assessment observation indicate about your student’s needs and current performance and educational needs? The pre-assessment indicates that student's do not understand the concept of measurment when talking about mass, weight, volume, and capacity. Pre-assessment indicates that 18/19 students need instruction, demonstration, and explanation to understand the deffinitions and concepts of these measurments. 2. How will you design the lesson to meet the needs of all learners in your classroom? Teacher will instruct the class on measurements using aan interactive powerpoint that clearly and specifically defines these terms and demonstrate the difference in measuring with the four types of measurment. Students will have a chance to experiment and measure weight, mass, volume, and capacity of four objects. Paraprofessionals will be in the classroom to provide additional support to students who need it. Students will listen to instruction, watch demonstration, and experiment with four different object and how to measure each. Lesson Teacher: Ms. Wilson Date: Apr/28/2015

Lesson Grade Level: 5th Timeframe: 9:00 to 10:00

Content Area: Math

Grouping Strategy: Individual

Preparing for Lesson Development1. What does your pre-assessment observation indicate about your student’s needs and current

performance and educational needs?

Lesson Plan Development

Lesson Title: Measuring Weight, Mass, Volume, and Capacity

Common Core and/or State Standard: Science Content Standard 1 - Students, through the inquiry process, demonstrate the ability to design, conduct, evaluate and communicate the results and form reasonable conclusions of scientific investigations.    Lesson Objective: Student will be able to identify the difference between weight, mass, volume and capacity

Assessment of Learning: Teacher will ask students to complete a short quiz about measurment compromised of short answer and essay questions.

Lesson Objective: Student will be able to explain which measurement method to use: weight, mass, volume, or capacity based on what they are asked to measure.

Assessment of Learning: Teacher will ask students to complete a short quiz comprised of short answer questions and essay questions.

Preperation Pre-assessment multiple choice and true/false quiz.  Results of pre-assessment

Student will be given a pre-assessment quiz to identify needs. This will be given the day before the lesson

about emasurment is taught to identify student needs.

Anticipatory Set handout on measurement

Students will be in their assigned seats, teacher will provide each student with a handout that defines weight, mass voume and capacity, handout will provide written explanation and pictures to help identify the differences.

5 minutes Objective and Purpose Powerpoint,

measuring tools (ruler, scale, mass scale, math cubes to demonstrate volume) and objects to demonstrate measuring weight, mass, volume and capacity of objects.

Teacher will provide spoken discription of what students will be learning and display a powerpoint of the smartboard explaining what the objectives are and what we will being measuring.

5 minutes Input Powerpoint Teacher will begin

going through the powerpoint that discribes and provides visual aides to explain what weight, mass, volume and capacity measure. Students will be instructed on using one method of measurment and then teacher will ask students a few questions about the information provided. Students will have their handout to reference during this time.

10 minutes Modeling Measuring tools and

objects to demonstrate how to measure weight, mass, volume, and

Teacher will provide examples of how to measure weight, what mass looks like using a balance scale, what

capacity of an object. volume is using math cubes in an object, and demonstrate the difference in capacity using two objects that have liquid in them.

5 minutesCheck for Understanding and Guided Practice Measuring tools and

objects to demonstrate how to measure weight, mass, volume, and capacity of an object.

Teacher will allow students to experiment using 4 different objects that show weight, mass, volume, and capacity so that the students have a visual of the difference in measurments. Students will rotate between 4 tables, they will have a few minutes at each table. One table will have an object to measure it weight on a scale, table two will have two objects that demonstrate mass using a balance scale, table three will have two object with liquid in it to demonstrate volume, and table four will have an object and volume cubes to demonstrate volume.

10 minutes Independent Practice What is Weight, Mass,

Volume, and Capacity Quiz

Teacher will hand out a quiz composed of 6 short answer and 2 short essay qeustions. Students will be asked to complete the quiz independently.

15 - 20 minutesClosure       Teacher will briefly go

over the questions on the quiz and go over the answers when all students are finished.

5 minutesEvidence of Lesson Effectiveness/Student Learning: Using your assessment data, describe the outcomes of

the lesson and student learning.

Looking at the overall results by individual student it is clear that a majority of the class did very poorly on the pre-assessment, indicating that they need further instruction and development on the concept. Looking at the table you can clearly see how students did or did not improve. A majority of the students (more than 85%) did improve after the lesson and were able demonstrate mastery or average score. However, student 7 who is identified as above average demonstrated that he was not able to grasp and achieve objective 1 from the lesson; his results showed that he scored 50% on objective 1 on the pre-assessment and post-assessment, indicating that he did not understand the concept because his score did not increase. Student 7 did however; demonstrated improvement and mastery on objective 2 after taking the post-assessment. Student 15 demonstrated below average scores after the post-assessment. He improved on his understanding on concept 1 but did not indicate improvement on objective 2; this particular student gets extra help but does not have a formal plan in place for assistance, so he probably just needs a little extra explaining and instruction. Shown in the table, 11 students achieved 100%, 6 students achieved 75%, and 2 students only received 50% on the post-assessment for objective 1; 13 students achieved 100%, 5 students received 75%, and 1 students received a 50% for objective 2 on the post-assessment.

Reflection and Recommendations for Next Time: Use this area to reflect on the lesson. What worked and didn't work? What will you do differently next time?

Overall the lesson was effective because a majority of the students achieved mastery or above average after taking the post-assessment. Learning objective 1 – 17/19 students achieved mastery or above average, 2 received a 50%. Reasons for this could have been the way this information was taught or explained, student 7 and student 15 may have be audio learners so when teacher was explaining it might have been difficult for them to grasp.Learning objective 2 – 18/19 students achieved mastery or above average scores, 1 received a 50%, this could have been due to similar reasons. Student 50 may just need some additional instruction and support in this area to grasp the concept better.
