EcosystemBiotic and Abiotic Factors

Some guide questions:• What is an ecosystem? • What are the components of an ecosystem? • How do biotic and abiotic factors interact in

their environment? • Compare population and community.

2

EcosystemBiotic and Abiotic Factors

Outdoor Activity:• List down at least 5 things that you will see in

each place. (Write it down in your notebook) • Observe proper behavior at all times.

What is an ecosystem?

4

EcosystemBiotic and Abiotic Factors

What is an ecosystem?• A community of living organisms interacting

with non-living organisms in an environment. What is a community?• Consists of all the different populations that

live together in a habitat. • Interacting with the non-living environment

What is population?• A group of living things of the same kind that

live together and reproduce at a given time and place

Biotic and Abiotic FactorsEcosystems

Biotic Factors• Living factors • Man and other animals • Plants • Bacterial and Fungi

Abiotic Factors• Non-living factors • Light • Temperature • Air • Water

9

Biotic FactorsEcosystems

Biotic Factors — MAN• Presence of Pollutants — Animals and other

organisms are wiped out • Deforestation — Animals depend on trees for

shelter and food

10

Biotic FactorsEcosystems

Biotic Factors — ANIMALS• Red Tide — Red tide algae produces toxins

that kill fish • Pests — Aphids on plants feed on the sap of

young shoots

11

Biotic FactorsEcosystems

Biotic Factors — PLANTS• Competition — For sunlight, water and

nutrients

12

Biotic FactorsEcosystems

Biotic Factors — BACTERIA & FUNGI• Multiply rapidly and the disease can spread

rapidly causing a whole population of plants and animals to be affected.

13

Abiotic FactorsEcosystems

Abiotic Factors — LIGHT• Photosynthesis — Plants need sunlight to

produce food • Warmth — For plants and animals to survive • Some animals are sensitive to sunlight —

earth worms and wood lice

14

Abiotic FactorsEcosystems

Abiotic Factors — TEMPERATURE• High and Low Temperatures — Plants and

animals need certain temperatures in order for them to survive.

15

Abiotic FactorsEcosystems

Abiotic Factors — AIR• Oxygen — Plants and animals needs oxygen

to survive. (Respiration) • Carbon Dioxide — Plants need for

photosynthesis • Aquatic plants and Animals — Obtain oxygen

from the dissolved air in water

16

Abiotic FactorsEcosystems

Abiotic Factors — WATER• Plants and animals need water to survive. • Some organisms survive / live on land while

some can only live in water

17

Abiotic FactorsEcosystems

Abiotic Factors — SOIL• Garden Soil — Holds just the right amount of

water, lots of organisms can grow well here • Sandy Soil — Holds less water, fewer

organisms, usually dry • Clay Soil — Holds plenty of water, contains

fewer organisms than garden and sandy soil
