We don’t have very many band-run businesses, so most of our money gets spent outside our village. There’s lots of opportunity though! Over 90% of our community members are unemployed and/or on social assistance! Our band offers job training like: w First Aid w Foodsafe w Serving it Right w White Water Safety & Rescue wFirearm Acquisition Certificate (FAC) w Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) w Timber Framing Great Bear Nature Tours in Nekite, Smith Inlet Mill & Timber logging in Strachan Bay Our Special Claim money could be used to start businesses that would help our community Our people traditionally worked in the ‘goods’ industry, as fishermen, loggers, craftsmen, etc. But out of all the jobs in BC nowadays, only 1 in 5 are in ‘goods’. The rest (4 out of 5) are in ‘services’, meaning cashiers, waitresses, nurses, teachers, social workers, etc. ) There is a lot of funding available for economic development in first nation communities, from groups like Community Futures ) Almost all of the money that keeps our band running comes from the government (we are not self- sufficient) $ $
