ABOUT THE AUTHOR Severyn T. Bru yn is Profess or of

Sociology at Boston Col lege and directs a gradu ate p rogram

in Social Economy a nd Social Policy. He ha s p u bl ish ed infields of community development, scientific methodology,

and social economy. A former member of the Execut ive

Committee of the International Division of the American

Friends Service Commit tee, he has also worked for many

years on the activities of the New England region of AFSC.

He is a mem ber of the Fr iends Meet ing at Cam bridge.

His interest in economic al ternat ives grew out of his

search for a consis tency between rel igious test imony and

th e pa t tern s of everyday li fe . This interes t becam e a ma jor

concern as a r esu lt of vis its t o developing coun tr ies , wh ere

he found people following oppressive practices of welfare

capi ta lism an d s ta te soc ia l ism. In th e present pa mph le t he

descr ibes how Friends have sought a third way which

seems more com pa t ible with religious pr inciples .
