The conservation o biological diversity in habitats or transboundary waters requires the
determination o all, as well as regional and international oreign cooperation, in addition to the
eorts developed by nations; thus the international community is encouraged to participate, both
fnancially and technically, in our endeavor.

The coastal-marine resources management in the region hasbeen a subject o interest or governments and international
cooperation or many years. USAID has been one o the mainpartners, providing fnancial and technical resources, to improve
the balance between the uses o natural resources and the livingstandards o coastal communities.
This program also assists the countries compliance withinternational and regional agreements.
general ObjecTiveThe program is aimed to strengthen coastal-marine resourcesmanagement, and conservation in Central America, in order to
reduce environmental threats, and conserve biodiversity while
improving coastal communities livelihoods.
Specific ObjecTiveS. Promote eective monitoring and enorcement o coastal-
marine resources policies and legislation with an emphasis oncompliance.
Foster rights-based and market-based mechanisms andmanagement incentives or the conservation and sustainable use
o coastal-marine resources with an emphasis on ecosystem-based approach to management.

Due to the challenges that coastal communities andrelated governmental authorities continue to ace,
the USAID Regional Program or the Managemento Aquatic Resources and Economic Alternatives
is an opportunity to address threats posed byunsustainable coastal-marine resources managementpractices in Central America.

Resources and Economic Alternatives closely coordinates
its activities with related Central American Integration
System (SICA) institutions, mainly with the Central AmericanFisheries and Aquaculture Sectors Organization (OSPESCA),
and the Central American Commission or Environment and
Development (CCAD).
implemenTaTiOn periOdThe program initiated in March, 2010 and will conclude in
September, 2014, lasting 4.5 years.
implemenTaTiOn STraTegyDue to the program complexities, participation o a wide variety oactors rom dierent agencies, authorities, and dierent decision-
making levels, is essential.
Thereore, partnerships and alliances with government institutions,
national and international agencies, complementary projects,NGOs, communities and local stakeholders, have been established
to coordinate and implement local, national and regional activities.
The programs ecosystem approach, alls within the Biological
Diversity Convention and the Central American Agreement or
Biodiversitys ramework, 1992.

and two groups o endangered species.

- Queen Conch: Strombus gigas- Mangrove cockles:Anadara tuberculosa, A. similis and A. grandis

- Sharks: Carcharhinus sp., Alopias sp., Sphyrna sp., Nasolamia sp., Mustelus sp. and Prionacea sp.
- Sea turtles: Lepidochelys olivacea (Olive ridley), Caretta caretta (Loggerhead), Chelonia mydas (Green),Dermochelys coriacea (Leatherback) and Eretmochelys imbricata (Hawksbill).
Strengthening the coastal-marine resources management, politics and legal rameworks in Central America, in order to
reduce environmental threats, preserve biodiversity and improve the quality o lie o coastal communities.
