It?s unbelievable this time of year is already back again! It?s such an exciting time for students and families, but also very busy and filled with obligations as well. Hopefully everyone has a chance to rest and spend quality time together over the holidays. We have been really lucky to be going outside for recesses, as fresh air and play allows students to reset and be ready for learning.

This month, we are getting ready for our Christmas concerts. Students are having a blast playing musical games to practice their lyrics, and our choirs are meeting regularly and getting ready for their scheduled performances. Please check out our website or the calendar in this newsletter for all of the information needed regarding dates and times. Each morning, staff send students to the principal?s office. Together we celebrate their good deeds as the students strive to ?Be the Best They Can Be?. Each month the Beaumont Boston Pizza donates a pizza to be shared with the lucky students whose names are drawn from all the students who received a Positive Referral during the month.

This month Ethan D., Jazmyn N., Ella P., Erini C., Dylan D., & Ryan S. will be joining Mme El-Khatib and Mme Ivanc for pizza lunch on Friday, December 15th. Details will be sent home soon.

We have now had over two months with our library on wheels and I would like to thank all the students for their suggestions that help me know what to put on the cart for each class. I would also like to commend everyone for using your plastic bags

when transporting library books ? no water or food damaged books so far this year!

Upper grades will be able to keep their library books over the holidays, while the younger grades will be expected to return theirs. If your family is traveling over Christmas, or any time during the school year, please remember to return library books

before you go.

Merry Christmas and happy reading!

STUDENT ABSENCES

ALBERTA HEALTH SERVICES (AHS)

Morning supervision, recesses and Inclem ent Weat her

Morning supervision begins at 8:25 am. When the weather is inclement, (-20 or colder with the wind chill) students are allowed into the school. Students should be prepared and dressed to be outside every day.

At Bellevue, we value the importance of movement breaks and exercise for students and staff. Research has long supported the connection between regular movement breaks/ recesses and enhanced learning. As a result, we offer students 3 daily recesses and daily Physical Education classes.

On days with inclement weather, school administration assesses the weather conditions. If conditions are not safe based on Environment Canada guidelines or deemed detrimental to student and staff wellbeing, recess would be indoors.

Radio Stations and TV stations in Edmonton will announce whether or not buses are running or if schools are closed. Only in exceptional circumstances are schools closed. The Black Gold Regional School website also has up to date information at www.blackgold.ca.

INCLEMENT WEATHER

Alberta Health Services publishes a Healthy Children newsletter. These newsletters are written for parents of elementary students to provide reliable and relevant information of health topics.

This month features information on regular mealtimes and being a role model.

SCHOOL FIELD TRIP FEES

CATHOLIC RELIGION PROGRAM

Let?s Help Keep Everyone Warm this Winter!

As a school, we are always trying to find ways to help people in our community. During the month of December, we will be collecting warm clothes such as toques, mittens, and scarves to help those who are in need during the cold winter months. Our goal is to help raise awareness with all of our students at Bellevue that giving is just as, if not more, important than receiving during the holiday season. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul has agreed to pick up our collection and distribute these items to those in need. Thank you for helping our students develop into compassionate citizens by sending in a warm piece of clothing to school by Tuesday, December 19th. Items can be hung on our ?Giving Tree? in the Main Street foyer.

ROMAN CATHOLIC RELIGION INSTRUCTION PROGRAM

Bellevue religion students will be attending an Advent Liturgy of the Word at St. Vital Church on Wednesday, December 13th at 1:00 pm.

Parents and siblings are always welcome to join us!

Please remember to fill out the online permission form.

Advent begins on December 3rd for four weeks until Christmas. Advent means ?coming.? It is a time of waiting, knowing that something important is about to happen. Advent is a time of preparation; a time to get our hearts ready for the coming of our Lord Jesus, who is God?s greatest gift to the world. Merry Christmas to all who celebrate! Peace on Earth!

COUNSELLOR'S CORNER

The holiday season is quickly approaching and with that the season of giving is near. The Beaumont/Nisku Christmas Elves program has officially begun!! This year, the Elves are in need of many items. They are accepting food donations, toys,

pajamas and books. For a complete list of items that go in a hamper please visit their website:

www.bnchristmaselves.com

If your family could benefit from the assistance of the Christmas Elves please contact:

·Me, Karen Gifford, and I can help coordinate resources and programs that best suit your family?s needs

or

·Christmas Elves directly. Please note all referrals will now be taken by Kaylene from FCSS; please call her at (780) 929-1006.

For children, the excitement of the holiday season can be very difficult. The Sandbox learning website offers some tips and strategies to make the holiday season merry and bright for all. Have a look at the strategies they suggest to deal with some of

the challenging holiday situations including giving and receiving gifts, managing the excitement and coping with changing schedules.

1.Gif t Giving and Receiving? The excitement of getting gifts can be overwhelming for children. Help them understand polite giving and receiving of gifts with these strategies.

Involve Children in Giving? Let children help pick out and wrap gifts. By participating in the gift giving process, children become interested in seeing other people?s reaction to the gift. Even young children can choose between two gifts, put a bow or tape on the wrapping paper, and decide where the gift should go under the tree.

Pract ice Receiving? Role play receiving a gift and thanking someone for it. Make writing thank you cards part of your family routine so children understand how to thank people politely for presents.

2.Holiday Energy? Holiday events often mean sweet foods and late bedtimes. Use the strategies below to manage energy levels and make bedtime successful.

Keep Children Act ive? Sledding, walking, and playing games outside during the day can help children use their energy in a healthy and positive way. Keep children active during the day so they will be tired at night making bedtime easier.

Lim it Sweet s? Candy, cookies, and soda are prevalent during the holidays. These foods are high in sugar and caffeine. They cause children to be overly active and make falling asleep difficult. Set rules about how much and when these foods can be consumed and provide healthy alternatives.

St ay on a Sleep Schedule? Even when children are not in school, a consistent sleep schedule is important. Have children wake up and go to bed at a regular time. Plan morning events such as holiday shopping to motivate children to wake up and get ready for the day.

3.Holiday Schedule Changes? Many children benefit from consistent routines and have difficulty with change. Make holiday schedule changes less stressful with these simple tips.

Use Visuals? Have a holiday calendar that lists events in writing, drawing, or picture format depending on the child?s level. Refer to the calendar to prepare children for the day?s events and help them understand what is going on and when.

Involve Children? Let children add new events to the calendar. If there are important events the family must attend, explain why attending is important. If there are events that are debatable, include children?s input in decisions about attending the event.

Wishing you a wonderful month of December!

Karen Gifford ? School Guidance Counsellor

LUNCH RECESS SKATING

Beginning on Friday, December 8th and continuing every Monday and Friday (weather and ice conditions

Bellevue rink. Students who participate should be fairly independent at putting on and tying their own skates

and helmet, but assistance will be provided if needed. If there is sufficient interest, a portion of the ice will be

designated for students with face masks to play in a game of ?shinny?hockey using plastic sticks and a soft

foam puck. Students are not permitted to bring their own hockey or ringette sticks. A portion of the ice will

always be designated for skating. Parent volunteers are welcome to help tie skates and participate.

If students wish to participate, they must have skates, gloves, and a CSA approved skating helmet. If you have
