FREESPEAK INTEGRA BASICS

FreeSpeak INTEGRA provides all the functionality of the FreeSpeak basestation and integrates it into the Eclipse HX Matrix. This provides a fully integrated wireless solution.

Connect up to 50+ FreeSpeak digital beltpacks wirelessly per card into an Eclipse HX Median or Omega matrix.

Up to 4x E-Que cards can be fitted into a Matrix chassis, allowing up to 8 Splitters and 40 Active Antennas to be connected.

HX software is used to configure E-Que cards, register beltpacks, assign roles and change important settings on the beltpacks.

FREESPEAK INTEGRA BASICS

Eclipse HX-FREESPEAK INTEGRA

► Each antenna covers a certain range or cell size

► Usually 50m indoors and 150-250m outdoors

► Each antenna also covers 5 full duplex users (beltpacks)

► If two or more antennas are placed in the same area then the cell size is the same

► However the cell density has increased to handle up to 10 users in the same area

► If antennas are placed across the site then, this increases radio coverage

► Beltpacks can roam from one antenna to another and stay in constant communication

► Cells can be completely overlapped for density (by co-locating multiple Antennas)

► Cells can be overlapped at boundaries (increases radio coverage)

E-Que. The E-Que cards provide the E1 interface required to run the Freespeak components. Up to 8 Active Antennas can be connected directly to the E-Que rear connector card, but this number can be increased to 10 by using Splitters.

The card is fitted into the Omega or Median frame

Splitters. These allow up to 5 Active Antennas to connect to a single E1 port.

Active Antenna (AA). Each AA provides connection for up to 5 Freespeak Belt Packs within its range.

- The LAN Port is used for diagnostic / upgrade purposes.

- Ports 1-8 are used to connect a single locally powered antenna

- If splitters are to be used, only ports 1 & 5 will be able to drive the splitters. All other ports will be disabled when using splitters so will not be able to drive Antennas.

The DECT Ref ports are to be used when there are multiple matrices utilizing the same floor area. This ensures that the DECT clocks are synchronized.

Example : if two different matrices have 3 antennas each (6 in total) in the main corridor that runs outside of the 2 studios that they control. Then we would recommend linking the Dect sync of both matrices together

► On the front of the E-QUE card Yellow LEDs come on to indicate connection to antenna or splitter

To activate a talk or listen route (“label”):► Press down the button A/B (short tap to latch / press and hold to be momentary)► You can latch on as many talk / listen keys as you need.

Setting and adjusting listen levels You can adjust the incoming audio to a beltpack (listen level) in two ways :► You can set the overall maximum level for the beltpack by holding down the

scroll up/ down buttons

► You can adjust the incoming audio level as you talk or listen on the beltpack►using the beltpack’s talk button rotary encoder. This adjusts the level only of the

label assigned to that pot.

If you are charging the batteries twice daily, then the battery lifetime would be approximately 8 months.

It is recommended that the batteries be replaced every 4-5 months in these circumstances.

The beltpack front-panel display has an icon that shows the battery condition. It has five vertical lines to signify the remaining charge. When the icon has dropped down to the last two lines, it will be time in the next few minutes to replace the batteries. The beltpack will turn off by itself at low battery levels.

A low-battery alarm is available the headset user will hear a beep at intervals and the battery indicator will flash to indicate that the batteries have approximately 40 minutes of remaining battery life.

► E-QUE: Antenna mode gives 8 directly connected antennas. Each antenna must be locally powered

► EQUE: Splitter mode allows 2 splitter units to be connected to the EQUE card port 1 and 5. The splitter units can then drive upto 10 antennas. The splitters must be locally powered

► E-Que cards may be fitted to any free slot in the matrix

Use the Talk and Listen labels to represent the location of the antenna or to correspond to a physical area.

The cable length between the card and the Antenna should be defined in the configuration. This will allow change in 129m steps allowing the Antenna sync to be syncronized.

All antennas on the system are sent a sync pulse. If the cable length between two antennas is very different >130m then a BP will have problems roaming between these two antennas. The antenna tab is used to set a correction factor to the sync pulses.

To configure a beltpacks in HX is a 3 step process.

► Step 1: ► Register the physical beltpacks to the matrix. ► This will lock the matrix system ID and the BP serial numbers together.► Therefore any registered BP, will on power up search for the correct matrix system ID

and login

► Step 2: ► Declare in HX Beltpack Roles.► Beltpack roles are similar to having different “user logins” on the same PC. ► When a user powers up their beltpack they can then select which role they want to be:

►Sound engineer, Lighting crew, production crew. ► This allows the user to have more ROLES than physical BPs

► Step 3: ► Program the labels / buttons for each ROLE (same as panel key programming)

Associated Roles:

On power up a beltpack will list all the roles created in the configuration

The user can then scroll through the list and select the operational ROLE they need

HX also allows the beltpack to have either a

► Preferred association to a BP role: on power up the BP will jump to the associated role and the user then selects the role or any other role

► Fixed association to a specific role. On power up the BP will log directly to the role selected

Key layouts for roles can be edited using the Panel Programming screen (from the Configuration menu).

Keys can be added via drag and drop, and edited in the same fashion as other Eclipse HX panels.

Navigate through the shift pages using the ‘Page’ drop down menu at the top of the screen.

A site survey is required to work out the best locations to place antennas

Begin placing antennas and splitters to provide the necessary coverage areas for all of the beltpacks. Your first placements of antennas and splitters will be experimental and temporary. After placing the antennas, walk through the coverage areas to check for gaps and then re-locate the antennas accordingly.

The following questions will help you to begin placing the antennas:► Is there any existing analogue wireless systems – look to place the antennas in a similar

area / height - about 5-10m away from existing antennas

► Is there an existing Dect phone or wireless LAN system – look to place the antennas in a similar area / height - about 5-10m away from existing antennas

► look to place the antennas as high as possible for best line of sight operation (it does not matter on antenna rotation)

► If the antenna has to be hidden from sight –try to leave the 2 black stalks visible► Try not to place the antenna near large concrete pillars, metal doors, metal walls and

metallised ceiling tiles other significant structures, by at least 50cm► Try to place the antenna at the junction of corridors

To conduct a simple survey, Use a matrix (or basestation), antenna and Beltpack► Secure 1 antenna ► On the beltpack go into the menu and select view status and select connection info

On the screen you will see RS (Receiver signal strength) and Error count – The RS level should be between 25-30 The Error count should be less than 1%

While moving you may get large % errors, this normally settles down to an average reading if you stand still.

With the beltpack showing the connection info screen. Stand next to the antenna and walk away to find the edge of the antenna coverage

Once the BP readings get to an RS of 25 or more than 1% Error then you are at the edge of coverage for that antenna and you should look to place another antenna in that location. When overlapping antenna coverage zones allow for 10-20% overlap of zones

Repeat the steps of moving antennas around and taking measurements, Make sure that any studio doors are tested both open and closed

Mark your readings onto a site plan of the facility

If you have two antennas then you can check antenna handover as you walk from one coverage area to another. When overlapping antenna coverage zones allow for 10-20% overlap of zones

► Avoid whenever possible ► Large metal objects within 1m of the antenna► Large containers of liquid/trees/leafs in front of the antenna► Basements or below ground locations, higher is better► Covering antennas with stuff

► Plastic bags are ok in bad weather

► Best install practice ► Locate the antenna with a wide open area around the antenna► Locate omni-directional antennas in the middle of the coverage area► Maintain line of sight with as much of the coverage are as possible► Locate the antenna as high as possible► Try and mount the antenna 50cm away from the wall

PD4007 cable connected from PC serial port to 3.5mm connector on CellCom BP

PC

Use this program to upgrade CellCom beltpack firmware using the PD4007 cable. Select the proper beltpack firmware file (file has .mot extension), set correct COM port, then download to beltpack. During download process the beltpack will display “upgrading firmware” , download process takes approximately 3 minutes to complete.

Note the DECT software can be upgraded in the field
