Flourishing

Flourishing

at TASIS England

The Flourishing ProgramThis unique program seeks to provide students, teachers, and all members of the community with the opportunity to develop the lifelong skills and habits required to experience a productive life. This is achieved through a combination of feeling good and functioning effectively (Huppert and So, 2011).

Know YourselfWe must know who we are in order to be the best versions of ourselves. We flourish in the face of challenge and opportunity when we have both the knowledge of our own strengths and when we develop the resilience to cope with challenges.

Be YourselfTASIS believes in the worth of each individual student and his or her potential to make a positive difference in the world. In order to fulfill this potential students must learn to skillfully respond to the present and strive to grow through effort. We must also have the courage to make mistakes and learn from them. In this environment, all members of the community can create more meaningful lives.

Flourishing with

Core ValuesFlourishing in the Lower School is based on the Core Virtues program, which encourages habits of the heart and mind. The program objectives are:

• To ignite the imagination of the students.

• To inspire them to do and to be their best by cultivating character and making positive contributions to the community.

Knowing & Understanding My FeelingsStudents in Frog Hollow Nursery, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten learn about their feelings, including emotions and impulses. They develop an emotional vocabulary and begin to learn how to share their feelings with others. At this stage, there is also a focus on self-control and self-reliance.

Knowing & Liking MyselfStudents in first and second grade start to learn about themselves, including what they like about themselves, and they gain an understanding of how to cope with difficulty. They practice skills that develop confidence and begin to learn about identity.

Being My Best SelfStudents in third and fourth grade develop skills to help them use their unique strengths to enhance peer relationships and to promote academic success. They explore goal setting, empathy, risk taking, problem solving, and learning styles.

5 DiscoveryStudents in fifth grade learn the vocabulary of Well Being, are introduced to self-care skills, and begin the process of discovering their strengths. The program touches on many aspects of flourishing including zest, mindfulness, resilience, and positive thinking.

6 Tools for SuccessSixth grade students are further introduced to the tools for success: grit, self-control, optimism, gratitude, social intelligence, and curiosity. Empathic skills like tolerance and kindness are explored as we build the skills of gratitude, mindfulness, and resilience.

7 Managing MyselfSelf-control, problem solving, and social-emotional learning are the key topics for seventh grade students. By examining their strengths, students learn to cultivate their best selves and to look for and savor the positive.

8 Skills for the Future

After taking the VIA Character Strength Survey, eighth grade students begin to understand how to use their strengths in daily life. They learn about thinking traps and how to combat the effect of stress through mindfulness. Students are also introduced to the concepts of grit and growth mindset.

9 Flourishing in the Face of Challenge

& Opportunity

Ninth grade students develop a strong understanding of their own behavior and how they can feel good and function effectively in the face of challenge and opportunity. This module of the program provides students with an in-depth look at the skills of resilience.

10 Developing My Ability to Lead

In the first semester, tenth grade students learn how to take a values/strengths based approach to developing leadership skills. In the second semester, students are introduced to mindfulness and learn how to skillfully and effectively respond to the present.

11 Developing My Potential

Gaining an understanding of grit is the main topic in eleventh grade. Key concepts include: courage, conscientiousness, achievement vs. dependability, setting long-term goals, resilience, optimism, confidence, creativity, and excellence vs. perfection.

12 Flourishing Independently

To support graduates in the next important stage of their lives, the focus is on developing the skills, values, and habits that will allow them to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives beyond TASIS England.Students develop an understanding of how mindfulness will serve them well in a sometimes frantic world.
